Re: Review: Alien: Isolation - One Of The Greatest Horror Games Of All Time Comes To Switch

Bomberman64

Wait what? It's really been 40 years?

I wish there had been some comments on the other great game modes. Like the survival one seems to be made for streaming since they are short experiences of the game. I feel they catered to everyone.

My next and second inevitable playthrough of this will have me exploring off the main track, which I didn't do the first time since I was too concerned about dying.

To this date, this is still the only horror game where I remember my first death in it...

@SuperEndriu That is very true, and it is also why voicing one's opinion is important, but in the end the most you can do as a consumer is to not buy the game. Then, of course devs or staff will survey online to see why their game failed to meet sales expectations.

I didn't mean to refer to you directly buying it, but in general. Still, you made the right choice for yourself not to buy it.

When it comes to the animations, I agree it would be lying to say the animations were done from scratch, if they were just copied from a previous game, however, what truly matters is if the animations are good enough for you, and that should have been possible to judge from the trailers. They didn't do the usual "promise more than they can fulfil" by showing a trailer that did not represent the game that a lot of devs do.

@SuperEndriu I agree that a lot more is definetely possible. Would they do that, though? As I said, GF have never been groundbreaking in terms of graphics nor innovation, not since Gen1/2.

If enough fans were thrown off this time by game freak, the repercussions will only be felt when the next games come out and these now ex-fans refrain from buying it, because a lot of people who don't end up liking this game will still have bought it this time around. However, if you went in buying it while already hating it, I can only hope you end up changing your mind since it would be a shame to have wasted your money, really.

This wasn't unexpected. Personally I haven't played the games but they at the very least look intriguing.

Many of these negative opinions I see around are the same ones I remember having had over 10 years ago when Pokemon Diamond and Pearl released. I felt sort of betrayed since the games did not live up to my expectations of 3d graphics and models of the pokemon, having seen what Dragon Quest Monsters had pulled off on the same system (I picked up the games some months later with no beforehand knowledge of them).

That's when I stopped playing the games, after having spent hours on all the previous ones. Though, I did not go on a rampage of the kind you would see in a kindergarden when someone's toy gets taken or wish isn't granted.

Now, I've come to accept that the pokemon games are not there to show off graphics, and the gameplay of the mainline series is very conservative, but that's okay. Game Freak doesn't claim otherwise, and no one is forcing you to play the games. Just play something else. Don't waste your time going around on a rampage. Of course that's different from just voicing your opinion, which is okay whether it be positive or negative. For example, the trees in SwSh do resemble those in DQVIII on the PS2. But do I play the game for the trees?

Re: Nintendo 64 Sales Have Seen A Dramatic Rise On eBay This Year

@StevenG "The n64 doesn't really have cap issues." Maybe not yet. "Besides recapping isn't hard or expensive." So you'd rather have more people try their hand at recapping? To quote yourself "Do you want to ruin the planet faster?", because more systems are gonna end up in the trash. The new capture solutions for New 3DS by loopy aren't gonna come out in DIY kits, just because so many people were messing up systems with their soldering in the old kit. Sure installing this is harder than recapping an N64, but if you increase the amount of people doing it, you'll quickly get rid of the majority of the N64 consoles that are still working on the planet.

"Why do you hate reuse so much?" To quote myself: "I'm not against using the original hardware". Reuse is good as long as it's at a reasonable price and not 1000£ for something you can get off of eshop or some service for 2£. Of course if you're a collector you'll see this differently, but most people aren't collectors, which is a good thing for the collectors' wallets.

I'd rather have people spend 15£ towards a rerelease of Golden Axe Warrior, than 150£ towards a used copy for the SMS, because the former will go towards the industry that made the game in the first place, so that maybe we'll see more of those games in the future.

@StevenG
The customers interested in an FPGAed classic are a different group from those what would be interested and satisfied with just a "rasperry pi in a knock off case". This is why you could have the Mega Sg release close to the release of the Mega Drive mini: the average Mega Drive mini buyers were probably satisfied with what it had to offer. FPGA classics will come in the future when FPGAs have become cheaper.

I'm okay with Nintendo making money from an inferior product as long as it is more economically viable and costs less than the superior product (and we have to add the games into the equation). The PS4 is inferior to the PS4 Pro but goes for a lower price too, whether you agree with the price of any of the products to begin with is of course up to you.

If Nintendo makes a mini N64 I hope they don't add ability to support carts UNLESS they also release it with onboard games or they plan to re-release n64 games on carts (which they probably never will). I'd never want Nintendo to make more people enter into the market of used games, because the inflation is already terrible as it is, so anything that can slow down the inflation is good. Therefore releasing a mini console with some games on it will divert people from being interested in buying the original console and the original carts.

Re: Nintendo 64 Sales Have Seen A Dramatic Rise On eBay This Year

Bomberman64

Sadly, I do think some of those sales are due to retroscalpers who are just interested in selling them on for a higher price.

Also, Nintendo should hurry up and release an N64 classic so that people spend the money towards them rather than towards resellers of used hardware. I'm not against using the original hardware, but I'd rather have the money go to the company that made the great system.

Re: Aladdin And The Lion King Retro And Legacy Editions Announced

Bomberman64

First off I'm glad these games are getting modern rereleases.

30$ is still too much for two games like these. The Sega Mega Drive collection on Switch is around 30$ too, and even if it was a bit more when released, it's more bang for your buck.

I think what they did is make the lowest price closer to the special edition prices to incentivise people to pay the extra for those editions.

Interestingly this kind of explains why these games didn't come to the mega drive mini (though Castlevania was on a separate collection too, probably cuz it sells more).

Re: Review: Dragon Quest - A Classic JRPG Marred By Odd Choices And Technical Issues

Bomberman64

@Nintendofan83 As others have said, the mobile versions are better than this. Personally I don't think much of touch controls so I'd have to connect a controller via bluetooth and maybe stream the phone to my tv.

If you're willing to go further I'd try to get the fan translated version of the snes remake. It's quite okay to play without cheats like double exp, half encounter rate, and/or double the money, though if I were to have someone unfamiliar to old rpgs play it for the first time I might add those cheats for them.

Re: Review: Dragon Quest - A Classic JRPG Marred By Odd Choices And Technical Issues

Bomberman64

As a die hard fan who regularly beats Dragon Quest 1 remake on the SNES, it's sad to see they didn't put more work into this. I've been ready to replace the snes version with a superior version for a long time, and it seems I have to wait even longer.

They could easily just put the game in a SNES emulator with some filters for those that want and add some cheats you can enable, to make it more similar to the fantastic Phantasy Star release from SEGA Ages - That's the way you make a classic game more accessible for modern audiences.

Also, it's a shame that the reviewer doesn't mention the legacy that is Dragon Quest 1, which is basically that it is the first JRPG as we have come to know them. It went on to inspire the first Final Fantasy, though the series has stayed true to its traditions and being very conservative.

Dragon Quest 1 is a short game and it's nice because it actually isn't linear at all. The only thing stopping you from straying from the easier path are the levels of the monsters, though you can just grind and go whatever route you want before taking on the Dragonlord's Castle.

My dream remake would be the game redone in the DQ11 engine with symphonic soundtrack. Sure it's a lot of work for such a short game but well worth it, to me at least. Hopefully someone adds a MSU1 patch to the game sooner or later so that I can do that to the SNES Remake.
