This really happened a few years ago, but I'm happy this got shared so that people who are dissappointed with the Wii Mini might become aware of their options with it.
The only real disadvantage with it now is the lack of component video output.
Orchestral music can be nice but if a game follows the recent Japanese trend of having an electric guitar in there, then I'm personally not a fan and would much rather have chiptune. If you do enjoy that though then more power to you.
Etrian Odyssey with Yuzu Koshiro is an example of a series that has gone down this road.
Buy the game rom from any official source (mini console, eshop etc.), flash/burn it to your own personal cartridge/disc and make your own labels and covers and have something that's in pristine quality, no 20+ year old components or discs, and no paying huge amounts to someone who's not increasing the chances of the game getting a modern day sequel, remaster or remake. That is in my opinion the best of both worlds.
Screen Burn-in isn't something you'll need to worry about, but stuttery motion is more possible since there is inherently less ghosting on OLEDs compared to LCDs. This is normally a good thing but only if a game can run at a smooth framerate, preferably above 30fps, so 60 fps.
Sp this is basically Dragon Quest IX for the Switch. I'm won't complain, even if I don't like chibi visuals, as long as the coop gameplay is as solid as DQIX
About the legalities it's worth noting that decompilation and reverse engineering of a source code does not automatically make it legal and immune to a DMCA. One example of this happening was the reverse engineering of the GTA 3 PC version, which had its source code taken down after Rockstar complained which they apparently had good reason to do.
However, seeing as Nintendo has not done anything yet after so long it seems very possible this is here to stay.
This more of a comment on Digital Foundry's explanation of the legality of this.
Comparing the total Switch unit sales to total 3DS (75,94) plus Wii U (13,56) shows us that it's just about to surpass their total sales (89,5). Even if there are problems making such a comparison, it is still very interesting.
As for software sales, which are maybe more interesting from a financial point of view, the Switch has surpassed the total sales of the Wii U and 3DS by just under 100 million (587-490), which really shows that Nintendo has come out better than it was during the last gen.
I do however believe the Switch will never be able to surpass the DS and Wii in combined total sales for hardware and software, but taken both indiviually it does stand a chance, moreso in terms of consoles sold than total software sales (around 930 million each).
Another interesting fact is that the Switch just surpassed the total combined GBA and GC (586 vs 587). even if the combined number of hardware units of the GBA and GC still is some ways to go (103,25), I do believe it will surpass this along with the Wii within this next fiscal year.
@Yodalovesu Yes, a lot of news sites reported on Bandai Namco being the ones making Metroid Prime 4 initially before development got rebooted and they were replaced by Retro Studios.
Not sure if it was the right way to put it that they "got picked" to do Pokemon Snap because of their (not) satisfactory work on Metroid Prime 4, or maybe that is why they ended up with Pokemon Snap. Still Metroid and Pokemon belong to very different branches, or what they like to call it, of Nintendo. Hopefully they'll both end up as good games for the fans, of course.
I'd like to think that they're using the game engine from their work on Metroid Prime 4 for Pokemon Snap. Both are fps games ... It's probably not the case, but still, it would be fun if data miners find references to MP4 in its code.
@PhilKenSebben Yeah, thanks you're right! Not sure if that would have anything to say about which version would get brought over. I figure it depends more on the emulators already there. They obviously won't make a ps1 or a saturn emulator just for a free update. I figure it stood between the snes or the ms dos/windows versions (prerendered).
@Wilforce I second that. Would be nice to know if it's the prerendered graphics sequel found on the ps1, saturn, dos and windows, or the sprite-based sequel on the snes.
Well at least I managed to upload 4 out of the 10 possible courses to Mario Maker before it shut down. Didn't want to just upload crap either. I guess I'll upload on SMM2 when I save up for a Switch and the game. Hopefully that won't be shut down by then though.
@OstianOwl In all honesty though, and I say this being a 2D Sonic fan, when was the last time Yuji Naka produced/directed or programmed a widely praised title? I can only see Sonic Rush.
I was about to celebrate Monster Hunter 3 finally being on sale before I went to the eshop to find it still at 39€ and realized this was for North America....
I agree Mother 3 is an amazing achievement for the GBA, but I'd much rather prefer seeing games with official English translations being there. I would've had Medabots Metabee/Rokusho on the list, not because it's better than Mother 3, but it is in English and is a fine and unique game with great audio quality for the GBA. Heck you can even find it on the Wii U eShop last I checked.
Also apart from Kingdom Hearts and Shining Soul we don't see as many Action-RPGs on the list as we saw on the DS list. If action RPGs are allowed I'm suprised Boktai isn't there instead of, again, some Japan-only titles.
You can never really claim someone else's preferences are wrong. I'd have stuck with more turn-based combat games, than many of the action games listed that have some rpg-elements or just a story portion and anime characters, like Solatorobo (great game though), Kingdom Hearts etc.
Also Dragon Quest IV, V and VI would have been there instead of games like Infinite Space and Nostalgia had I made the list.
I question the basis for the claim that "the system wasn't flooded with quality titles" which the article states in the beginning. I simply disagree and the DS has lots of quality titles, and not just in the RPG department.
Been discovering Super Mario Maker on Wii U lately since up until now I haven't had any time to in my life. It's a shame servers are going down, but I feel more sorry for people who will be even later to the game and never see the best part about it. I get that Nintendo would have to close the servers at some point.
@Dethmunk Dude, limited run games is doing it for physical games that would've never seen a physical release, not digital releases. Also they rerelease games for obsolete consoles like gameboy games.
I've never bought from them, might never, but they give new life for things that went out of production which I can respect.
Anyone who knows about GBA shovelware will recognize Full Fat immediately. Mostly licensed stuff came from them. They did make quite a few decent-ish games like Pacman World for GBA.
Even though I'd love to see DQIV-VI being ported to Switch, I can't help but fear that they'll port the super famicom versions rather than the already existing DS ones. I hope I'm wrong but this seems to have been the trend with the latest rereleases of games like SaGa and Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon. I get that this gets to go on because people actually buy these games but please.
@Peteykins "Kind of supports my thesis that Famitsu is so beholden to Nintendo that they absolutely will not give a first-party game a bad review. It's like it's a policy."
Which is also probably why Famitsu get to be the first to publish their review.
That said 3D World on the Wii U is one of the greatest multiplayer games I've played in a very long time. Make sure to play it with people at more or less the same level.
If SMW2 Yoshi's Island isn't a Mario game but a Yoshi game, why isn't Donkey Kong considered a Mario game? I feel it should be on the list. Heck even Mario Bros. should. Even Donkey Kong on the GB should be there if you ask me.
Damn! I would buy Monster Hunter 3 on both 3DS and Wii U for those prices.. Sadly in Europe they're still priced at the ridiculous 39,99£ and 49,99£. Those prices are near offensive considering the age of the games.
I'd love to see Nintendo fans join and take a stance together in some way showing Nintendo that we're not taking this anymore. Like some way to show that they clearly are not getting our money anymore if they continue like this.
@rdrunner1178 True and so if you look at it from a Nintendo perspective, you're only buying games on 1 system instead of several games across the systems. Not sure how total game sales for Wii U + 3ds compares to Switch alone, but I do expect the Switch to be pretty close behind.
