@OrtadragoonX I agree on parts of what you wrote. Most people I knew who owned a GameCube bought the game. But the numbers speak for themselves - the GameCube as a system wasn't as widespread. That doesn't deter from the legacy of the system, don't get me wrong. However, it sold around as many units as the original Xbox, and the Xbox series of systems didn't become mainstream popular until its successor, the 360.
I'm almost hoping Nintendo will hold off on releasing the next Metroid Prime to make it become a launch title for their next system (provided they don't mess up the marketing) so that the game gets as much attention as possible.
Metroid Prime merits its recognition as a great game, and from the sounds of it Nintendo played a big role in making this happen.
I'm sure if the GameCube had been more popular, this game would've been widely popular too, and the whole franchise as well. Right now it has a strong community, but most non-Nintendo people would never recognize it. I'm hoping the next Metroid Prime game will change that, but I am cautious.
Buying this on PC will at least allow me to do what improvements I want to the game, or just play the texture replaced PS1 game, knowing that I've actually paid for the game.
OOT is already part of the Hall of 'Fame' for video games, the one shared commonly between all gamers, whether they like the game or not. Not sure why these business guys don't recognize that.
I gave Nintendo some (justified) flak for the initial N64 emulation. Now, for persevering with fixing many of the issues with their emulation, they get their rightful praise and applause.
Kudos Nintendo.
I also thank the many fans who took time to voice their opinion, which seemingly led to Nintendo pushing out these fixes.
(Because *no one said anything back in the Wii U days and that might've contributed to the decision of releasing the initial NSO N64 with such issues in the first place).
You know putting it on the cloud was a good choice when the reviewer suggests getting the game on another console (Steam deck) instead. Are you sure it was a good to green-light this for Squeenix, Nintendo?
@Res462 In that case I can agree, although NL didn't specify that as a criterion, again. Not sure how much retail/eshop-only would matter though.
Maybe NL considered Affordable Space Adventures as simply impossible due to the nature of the game. Might've been possible with two switches but that's quite the obstacle.
@Res462 No idea if Affordable Space Adventures is Nintendo published, but nowhere does it state in the article that that's a criterion. Sure it'd make it more likely to get ported, but I'd be surprised if Watch Dogs, Deus Ex etc are Nintendo published. You never know though.
Been playing lots of OOT3D lately and I keep thinking how it looks like the N64 version, but seeing this reminds me just how much better-looking the 3DS release is!
Just grabbed these posters. Had to do it from Nintendo DE store since the UK store blocked me from adding it to the cart because I was naturally lacking 500 points after already having reedemed this on the my.nintendo page - Just a tip if anyone else runs into the same problem.
@RupeeClock Thanks for mentioning the card case. I'll be looking into saving up points for that one.
@sanderev Yes, they do and they did with BDSP too, which has sold really well, but will it continue to be like this considering how the industry in general and they themselves have been releasing their games? Only time will tell. With the current fanbase, Arceus could just be a bootleg flappy bird 3D game and fans would still buy it day 1, or preorder it.
@VoidofLight Sooo what if only after they've patched it in do you buy the game and play it, in this case you'd be able to plough through it. There's some irony to how they expect people to grab and play the game immediately and not wait some months/a year, when the state of the game at release could make many hold out on it til they've fixed most of the issues it released with.
The end of an era indeed : this happened, Reggie left (it was nice seeing him in the clip), no mynintendo apps and discounts and, above all, no background music on the console (main menu, eshop etc), this truely feels like an end of an era and a very different Nintendo.
I'll definitely miss it but I'm glad I got to experience it.
The games from that era that hiding behind walls remind me of are Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu. You could also argue that Ocarina of Time with the maze before the Forest Temple is similar
Winback looks a lot like they tried to make a lightgun game like virtua cop just that you're in full control, and I wouldn't be surprised if that were part of the thought process behind it.
Those old games were played on CRTs, and 20 fps on a CRT is better than 30 fps on an LCD, especially an LCD from the early 2000s. The difference is bigger than if you turn on Black Frame Insertion on a modern lcd, to give a comparison (and you also avoid the likely headache from the black-flickering image.)
No one realized that about LCDs back then though. This is why we can complain now. Well some of us. Sonic on MD in 30 FPS on a CRT is still better than the same in 60 fps on your current average LCDs. Only Black Frame Insertion and 60 fps might get you to the a similar level of motion resolution.
4K is really the limit to what we need, unless you like to have your face touching the screen when playing. What we need now is less ghosting and a clearer image, which is not necessarily connected to whether a TV is 60hz or 120hz but more to how well it clears and updates its display.
As much as I am for preservation, let's hope this doesn't go down the GTA3 road now that Nintendo has seen what tools they can use to shut down this, which is no doubt what they would prefer.
This is why competition is important. If one company goes for an easy cash-grab, another one will get the opportunity to make something competitive. Still, it's hard to compete with nostalgia and legacy.
Surely unintentionally, it's very antimonopolistic of what is one of the richest company in gaming to release this, since they could've done a lot better and therefore removed all competition.
@marandahir That's an interesting point. I wasn't aware that these discrepancies were due to Nintendo's OOT ROM. Does this mean that if you were to substitute the ROM they've included with a proper one, you'd get all the stuff back? I imagine people have already tried this in that case.
As for OOT 3D, I agree with you on that one. I might go back to a properly emulated or real hardware running N64 OOT just for the nostalgia, but if I want to introduce someone to the game for the first time then OOT 3D is my way to go.
As you said it would be nice if they added back the fog and possibly the colors, especially since you'd be experiencing them on a better screen than the 3DS, which I can understand them wanting to go for brighter colors on that screen really, sort of like the first GBA.
@LunarFlame17 Exactly. People don't just complain about the emulation because they enjoy doing that. If they did, then as I said, they would have done so with the SNES mini's emulation too, which was a great little device with good emulation and content for its price.
Also these complaints aren't about telling people not to enjoy these games and spend their money on it. I'm okay with others spending their money however they want. I'm just explaining why I'm not going to spend money on it. Sure, some (very loud) people do actually try to tell you what to do, but they aren't worth listening to.
================================
@faint I'm comparing attention to detail vs. the N64 NSO. The SNES mini emulation was great, while the Wii U's SNES emulation was not so. The NES mini had issues with its emulation, and they were rightfully complained about.
Of course, anyone in their right mind knows that N64 is more taxing to emulate than the SNES, but to say this justifies not striving for more than what has been delivered with NSO at this price, is not right. The Switch does a fine job at Saturn emulation, for example, and the Saturn emulator is based on the work of someone who did not have access to the same documentation Nintendo has for the N64, and decades ago at that.
@Zag_Man You make an interesting point about Microsoft and it makes me think about how they've remastered/remade the Halo games recently.
The way I see it, Microsoft allows itself to spend that sort of money because they're still in need of creating themselves a legacy, having joined the business 20-ish years after Nintendo, and therefore their IP doesn't survive on as much nostalgia as Nintendo's IP does. So if they rerelease a lack-luster version of one of their games it really tarnishes the value and public opinion on that franchise in the long run. Instead of people reacting like this when they try Halo 1 for the first time in 2021: "Man, this old game looks horrible and is glitchy. How could people play this game?", they might think "Halo 1 is old but it is still enjoyable.".
As a comparison, would the legacy of TLOZ be hurt by a not-optimal rerelease of Ocarina of Time on the Switch? Probably not. However, maybe it does hurt OOT a bit, but at least there was OOT 3D recently that gave a great experience to a newer and younger audience.
I'd like to point out the fact that the shortcomings of the emulator of the NSO N64 made the author of the article question his own memories of what the game actually looked like.
Take a second to think about the implications of that and maybe you will understand the vitriol.
I've completely stopped checking My Nintendo after they removed anything of value to warrant getting those platinum coins for. Last thing I got was a set of posters. Now it just serves to keep count of my gold coins so I can use them to get reduced prices on games.
@Vyacheslav333 Yes, I agree that they should all come to Switch.
However, this article specified select series or single games that have never been on any Nintendo hardware at all.
I figure the reasoning behind the article is that if you've been an exclusive Nintendo gamer then these are games you've never gotten the chance to experience.
I know several people like this and I was very happy for them when Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was announced.
Heroes of Might and Magic 1-5 (No, the Game Boy games don't count...) These would have been perfect on Wii U with the tablet's touchpad or even Wiimote if done well. At least Switch has a touch screen too so it could be doable. Oh and the 6th and 7th games aren't that important to port imo.
I'm actually more intrigued now! I like the way Monster Hunter's areas work and I much rather prefer landscapes where attention to detail is prioritized over a vast empty space just for the sake of being large.
@AG_Awesome Exactly this! If you put a screen protector on it then wouldn't you end up peeling away the factory-applied protector when you eventually decide to change it.
So here are the prospects of this: 1. This "release" booms and squeenix learns their lesson and make actual releases of at least all the games other than 0.2 and 3.
2. People actually buy these and all the people who experience the series for the first time are inevitably left with a very bad impression of it and never want to touch it again, damaging the legacy of this series. Great way to plan for the future Disney and Squeenix 👍
Either way it sucks. I don't even want to think about how horrible doing that already infuriating race against Riku on Destiny Island in KH1 will be with the added input lag. Jeezzzz...
There's no excuse for not porting KH1 etc.. My potato PC can run the Epic game store version in 1080p at more than 120fps. I can only reasonably imagine that the source code is a mess to work with, but making the effort to port to ARM would really be future-proofing themselves since PCs will inevitably be moving to ARM and if they'd want to make a port to android and ios then that would make sense too.
@Kidfunkadelic83 DDD is imo the worst game in the series. I've played every single one except 3 and 0.2. DDD is one of the few games I regret buying and playing. The obligatory pet/nintendogs minigames and the tediousness of being interrupted and sent to either Sora or Riku were terrible design decisions.
Yet I still don't get why DDD which was on the ARM-based 3DS couldn't get a reasonable port to the Switch without too much hassle. Is their source code really that bad to work with??
@Shellcore True, and the frame rate is what I would presume would make people stay away from the PAL versions. Personally I would stay away from it, unless there is a European language translation I'm interested in.
