I'll repeat this again. With the Switch being the fusion of Nintendo's previous handheld and console efforts, it makes a lot of sense to compare its numbers to the total handheld+console sales of a generation, if not they have technically gone down in salesnumbers of 'systems'.
However, it shouldn't take long for the Switch to outperform the combined Wii U and 3DS sales at a little under 90 million systems sold.
That name made me think that they were remaking Die by the Sword which was a very innovative game of the 90s, and that would have been awesome. Hopefully people will enjoy this weapon fighter.
Ah yes. One of the first famous cell-shaded games, especially for the FPS genre. The game was pretty cool but I remember it being hard towards the end for random reasons.
A new Goemon game would be great! They're usually a bit harder than your usual games so I'm curious how that will turn out with Good-Feel's reputation of making less stressful games.
Check out Tomita's modest youtube channel if you want to discover more of the great music he has composed since the 80s and until now: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb3jiie6b517pzh1oP2eg7A
He's often even there responding in English which is great.
Personally I just finished this game this summer in coop and thoroughly enjoyed it from the music to the gameplay. The challenge lies in getting enough beads. I've also been exploring more of Tomoyo Tomita's music which has quite the legacy coming from Konami games (Castlevania and Goemon) back when Konami was a proper game company.
I also agree that I might have enjoyed it more because of it being less like a normal Kirby game. The only thing I did not care too much about were the motion control levels.
The only bad thing about the 3DS game is that they cut out coop.
Has anyone made any studies into why Switch owners buy more of these indie games than PC gamers? It would be interesting to see some someone try to come up with a possible explanation.
Without any numbers one would just be plainly speculating as to why.
Everytime this article gets reposted I ask myself why Affordable Space Adventures isn't listed. I know it is as improbable as Rainbow Curse and Nintendo Land, but it deserves just as much attention to how great a game it was!
@Collette Exactly. I have a hard time seeing switch beating the combined sales of Wii and DS (250m). Maybe gamecube and gba (103m), or wii u and 3ds (88m).
Thing is, Nintendo lost a lot of potential sales it could have gotten in the early pandemic times. Right now I feel people will be more inclined to wait and buy the upcoming next gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony. The Switch will obviously still sell but I do feel they missed out on a lot of sales when AC:NH had just come out and people and families were stuck at home. Just my thoughts and opinion ofc. And there's not much to learn from this other than make sure to have a good extra stock of your console, whether that is due to lack of investment in manufacturerers or whatever.
I'm more surprised by the fact that Nintendo were able to keep the source code for these games. Most companies have lost the source code for games from the 90s and before. I mean at this point they could have made ports of their classic games rather than emulate them. I'd imagine the source code of TLOZ 3 was used for the gba port then.
Sure it has the combat system but the rest (atmosphere, visual style and narration) reminds me more of Diablo or Baldur's Gate. SMRPG has more charm and wit in its dialogue, music and characters.
Also I can't say after beating SMRPG that it's one of the best Nintendo games. It's good but with some flaws like horrible platforming.
Looks like a mashup of Sonic, Nights and 3D Mario. The Host character has a cappy top hat and a Nights style body. The only thing I didn't like were the soulless avatar for the main characters. Coop will be interesting to find out more about.
@PcTV Yeah the money investment people would have made in this game is what strikes me as the worst thing about it.
Hopefully with games like these shutting down earlier every time people will just get tired of it and never invest into those "keep playing for xx.xx $/€!". The publishers are really just gonna make players take these services less and less serious with these decisions, which is good for consumers.
@Henmii I guess Bug Fables it is. I wonder if it will see an unexpected increase in sales when Origami King releases and doesn't live up to the RPG legacy.
@arrmixer yep they've been there since day 1 with Paper Mario and it truely does show with the great story and dialog. I just wish they got some help from Nintendo on how to make an engaging rpg game right. I get that the game looks good but to quote "If [the game] is not fun, why bother?"
It's quite sad to think that now that Alpha Dream, the developers of Mario and Luigi RPGs series, are long gone, we'll probably not see a proper Mario RPG in quite a while. I guess the only realistic hope at this point is a sequel to Mario + Rabbids, which isn't quite the RPG I'm after but it's at least something.
@arrmixer Gotta remember they're made by Intelligent Soft, famous for Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. Of late they've been more busy with Fire Emblem and its social/story/dating sim feature.
Intelligent Soft have proven themselves capable of making engaging stories, but the gameplay department for Paper Mario is lacking.
@Jbuggydroid Before reading this review I would say this as a joke but now I am actually considering buying Bug Fables instead, or just replaying TTYD. This game was almost getting me to buy a Switch with it bundled but I can still wait at this point. Remakes of older 3D Marios might get me to buy one though.
@Not_Soos Second that! There are definetely some licensed titles that could do with rereleases. From the top of my head there's Bugs Bunny and Taz Time Busters and Scott Pilgrim.
@TG16_IS_BAE According to what I've read from hackers of it, Nintendo actually did their job well with regards to their software, it was Nvidia who had a flaw in their hardware that caused it to be hacked so quickly.
It's a shame really, especially when you see how small the piracy communities on xbox and ps are, partly because their securities are harder to circumvent and because they have stuff more available and no premium prices on games. Went to a store yesterday and found BotW (2017) for 70$ while Ratchet & Clank (2016) was 25$.
If anything this puts more pressure on Nintendo to release a better Mario 64 on switch compared to the travesty of darkened Mario on Wii U. Imagine they actually remade the game in Odyssey's engine with better visuals and audio, it'll 99% of the time be more popular and more appreciated than the pc port.
Also to those that keep saying SM64 isn't available to buy and Nintendo isn't earning money from it, you should check the Wii U eshop (while it is still open...).
In the end it took these people years to reverse engineer SM64 so I wouldn't see this as a "big threat" for the industry. Mostly games that sold well in their time and are considered classics get decompiled in this way, SM64 isn't the first and probably won't be the last.
@nab1 And to add to that list of games with amazing music there's
Bomberman Hero
Both Bomberman 64s (yeh ik)
Paper Mario
Both Zeldas (just thinking of Zelda's lullaby credits of oot)
FZero X
Kirby
Super Smash Bros. (its remixes and original tunes)
Goemon
Donkey Kong 64
Etc.
Very interesting. Still, having the option to have the benefits of cd audio would not have been a bad thing. I figure it might have helped out with voice samples and FMVs. Even if RE2 showed that FMVs were possible. In the end I can't say I ever felt the N64 audio was ever lacking in the games I played.
As a matter of fact, the N64 has some of the most memorable tunes I know of.
@Heavyarms55 Yes, it definetely will get broken since the same incentive to do so will be there, but the switch got hacked way too early which was saddening to see.
@Araquanid Good points! I didn't think of them either. Not sure how nintedo could avoid this except publishing their games on PC. Imagine what a world that would be..
@sanderev Yeah and I personally haven't heard many say that they want their xbox to be able to be hacked for piracy. There probably are people who would want that, but it seems when homebrew can be done in that way then most of the devs who would hack it has no incentive to break security completely on the system.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah hopefully Nintendo's next console, be it a Seitch revision or a new one, has better security. I'm glad they seem to have been able to combat online gaming hacking quite well as that is harming consumers the most. Not sure what state Splatoon 2 is in rn w/r to cheating.
@Heavyarms55 I agree 100%. Make your games available with no stupid flaws and profits should go up and some of the interest in/need for homebrew down.
Also the Switch should have been harder to break had it not been for the flaws in Nvidias hardware, which is a shame because Nintendo had fixed a lot of loopholes from the Wii U and 3DS in the Switch's system.
Also the Xbox and PS see a lot less hacking and homebrewing for some reason. Albeit Sony seems to spend more time and money on pushing updates to their system than hunting pirates and websites. Also it might be because they have good online services and a lot more and better sales for their games.

I'll repeat this again. With the Switch being the fusion of Nintendo's previous handheld and console efforts, it makes a lot of sense to compare its numbers to the total handheld+console sales of a generation, if not they have technically gone down in salesnumbers of 'systems'.

Re: Pikmin 3 Opening Week Physical Sales Were Worse On Switch Than Wii U (UK)
So what if PHYSICAL sales are down. That doesn't suprise me much considering COVID. The digital sales comparison is what matters.
Re: Of Course Scalpers Are Already Listing Fire Emblem's 30th Anniversary Edition
Shadow Dragon is already on the DS. Who are you trying to fool selling an older version. The superior version can be had on the Wii U for 8.99 £. And it is not limited time, at least until the Wii U Eshop closes.

Re: Paper Mario: The Origami King Almost Had EXP After All
Yeah, I'd be okay with Paper Mario series coming to a halt while the Mario & Luigi series would still be made.
Of course having both would be the best. Point is I prefer M&L as an rpg series.
