This probably isn't the sort of Super Mario Galaxy article you were hoping or expecting to see around the time of the Nintendo mascot's 35th-anniversary celebrations but here we are...Twitter user and "starboy" CometMedal has been closely inspecting the 2007 Wii entry's logo.
So what have they found? An edited image of the Andromeda Galaxy, originally taken by Robert Gendler in 2005. Here's the full rundown, along with some comparison shots:
"I found the full image of the galaxy depicted in Super Mario Galaxy's logo - an edited image of Andromeda Galaxy taken by Robert Gendler in 2005. It took some tricky work to confirm, but I pulled it off."
Although the Andromeda Galaxy is depicted in Super Mario Galaxy's logo, the game - to our knowledge - is simply set in outer space above the Mushroom Kingdom. If you do want to visit this galaxy though, you might be better off checking out the 2017 EA title, Mass Effect: Andromeda.
In case you didn't know, the Andromeda Galaxy is the nearest major galaxy to our own, the Milky Way.

I expected this to be about ur mr gay
@jobvd Same. I was like "Woah, it took them so long to notice?".
Well, quite surprising. 🙂
But Andromeda galaxy was very common choice for artist to describe about galaxy.
I'll stick to Super Mario Galaxy instead of taking your Mass Effect: Andromeda recommendation, thanks.
So mario is only one galaxy away? That's too close for comfort.
So they got a stock image and tinted it blue? Amazing...
I'd say you're better off not to play Mass Effect Andromeda, at all.
@Jakiboy I don’t think anyone thinks that’s newsworthy but the figuring out is given how most people don’t commit any details about the Andromeda galaxy to memory and what’s there is fragmented.
I noticed that when I first got the game, many moons ago. Just didn't think much of it other than "Cool, they used Andromeda in the logo about a Mario game in space". 😅
What do you think of this amazing find?
That it's not really a find at all. I love astrology, but this isn't a find, certainly not one warranting a whole article.
I have known this for a long time. your just wasting time.
Super Andromeda Galaxy?
...Yep, this confirms a Mario/Mass Effect crossover is happening. YouTuber IH3artGamez will make a speculation video any day now.
The astronomical image is a good one to use, to be fair. I'm sure it has been used numerous times elsewhere.
"you might be better off checking out Mass:Effect Andromeda". Lol, that makes no-one better off.
I really hope Andromeda serves a cease and desist.
Wait, the spacey background was actually a picture taken by some dude in 2005 the whole time??
INCREDIBLE
Currently replaying Mass Effect Andromeda on my one X. Runs much better than it did at launch on my old xbox one and it's not bad. Not as good as Mass Effect 2 or SMG but enjoyable
UR MR ANDROMEDA GALAXY
ME Andromeda was fun. I may go play that this weekend now.
Holy crap nintendo can use Photoshop? I never knew...
NASA! ELON! Somebody get me to the Andromeda Galaxy so I can meet Rosalina, QUICK! 🤣
This isn't as funny as the UR MR GAY thing, made even better from Mario Galaxy 2's logo spelling "YA I M, R U?" when read in reverse.
IDK how I haven't noticed this. It was right in front of our mugs this whole time. I actually do want to play Mass Effect as a whole. I'm sure even Andromeda isn't so bad now that it's a few years behind the hate train.
Andromeda Galaxy is the oldest light that can be seen with the naked eye - 2.1 milllion light years away. You can see it in normal/dark-ish skies(outside of cities). It's a fun challenge to find. Looks like a fuzzy white oval smudge (that's the core of the galaxy). When you know how freaking far away it is, it's mind boggling to see. Binoculars help.
And the colored cartoon stars in the pic are arranged like the Pleiades (also used in the Subaru logo). That may or may not be coincidence.
If you've never seen a planet through a scope, and someone offers a look at Jupiter, you say, "YES". It's rad AF. It might change your life. I thought telescopes were for nerds my whole life, until 7 years ago.
@KingBowser86 Not if I get there first! Lol
This was a very nice article, I didn't know about this. It's cool to imagine the Mushroom Kingdom and Sarasaland are in the next galaxy over. Kind of like how Termina in Majora's Mask is arguably set in our galaxy because you can see the Big Dipper and Orion's Belt in the north side of Clock Town. Thank you for posting this Liam.
I was so ready to come in here shouting about how on earth they're bring up 'U R MR GAY' again after all these years.
Came way pleasantly surprised.
I miss-read 'astronomical' for 'anatomical', and expected another 'Luigi's lunchbox' article.
I am disappointed.
Well now we know how to find him.
I'm Mr. Gay is all I know.
Did you now? Remove the U in Super Mario, and it reads totally different.
Incoming lawsuits from the Andromeda galaxy 😂😂😂
Is this at all surprising? No, because compared to the other Random news that we get here, this one seems like the most expected one.
I was playing the Andromeda Galaxy version of the game the other day (my Wii is multi-region) and was surprised to find that the box art on my copy has a picture of Cygnus A.
I came here for stickbug... totes disappoint
That's pretty cool.
Old news, but gold
Half Life 3 confirmed!
SMG is probably my all-time favorite 3D Mario game, and by association my favorite Wii title. It's music and atmosphere always calls me back. It's also the only 3D Mario game I've 100%'d.
Funny we're all mentioning Mass Effect....I've been replaying the series (I've never gotten beyond the 2nd game) on my old Star Wars SE Xbox 360. It's horribly optimized but still a good time. I love the soothing music that plays when you activate the Galaxy Map on the ship.
@Jakiboy It seems to me more of an homage than laziness. It's among the most famous photos of a galaxy in existence after all.
Nintendo being lazy and cheeky? Impossible!
This sorta feels like an article that is a waste of time to read.
Just weeks ago I was amazed by the clearest night sky I've ever seen. I saw an ocean of tiny stars layered behind the ones you can normally see. It was one of the most beautiful things ever. I love Andromeda.
@TrevorMcD No, I will get there first!
