In terms of historical content? Nah, seems pointless.
What I want to see from remakes is more IN GAME content. New levels, better designed levels, new abilities, storyline improvements, etc. I want to see more FFVII-esque remakes. Remakes that feel like what the game would've been like if it was designed from the ground up in the present day instead of making it like it was in the original but with an HD coat of paint.
@TenEighty Are bronies even still a thing anymore? At the very least, that subculture has MASSIVELY dropped off in the last decade (God I feel old saying the brony fad was that long ago). I was totally into FiM in the first few seasons but got tired of it like, 2015 or 2016. Early to mid 2010's was the time to release an open world console MLP game, not now. At this point I think the vast majority of bronies have long since moved on.
@HammerKirby Just like Game Freak always does a third version for their new generation. Or they always debut on new hardware with a new generation. Oh wait...
I would've never guessed this in a million years. No Johto or Unova, we're skipping to Kalos? Also, the graphics do look like they might be improved, I do suspect this is a Switch 2 game that was forced to be delayed because the Switch 2 was delayed.
34 of them being third party or remakes. Making this lineup look better than it actually is. Bottom line this is probably going to be a near empty year for Nintendo, especially if you're a fan of first party.
@TrueBlueYoshi Almost had me for a second, but it looked too much like an OG Switch to the point where I immediately questioned it until my brain saw the title.
Yup, this isn't the hardware announcement we're waiting for.
This is the time in the generation where anything could happen, they've tended to do some wacky things around this time. I really DON'T entirely know what to predict other than:
1. I think it's going to take place in an old region. If I had to guess I'd say Unova, but there's strong arguments for Johto too. 2. Game Freak is going to have some kind of project that involves an open world and new Pokemon, forms, variants, convergents, etc.
@WiiWareWave I'm not. No one's concerned about third parties right now because we've had a steady stream of them, and I expect that will continue. The concern is here what's coming for first party, and that's where I think Nintendo's moved on internally and we're just waiting for the Switch 2 announcement to know the answer. Most of the IPs that should be ready for a new game soon (3D Mario, Mario Kart, DK, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion should all have games ready in the next 1 or 2 years) are big ones that would be better served as early entries for next gen.
@WiiWareWave Even so, there's probably little to nothing coming before launch that isn't announced. Development has likely shifted to the Switch 2 at this point. If the Switch 2 isn't coming until November, we're probably just getting 3 or 4 Switch 2 titles in November/December and that's it.
@Hirsbrunner Yes. The expectation is that they're only showing 3rd party stuff because they're revealing the Switch 2 soon (a lot of rumors saying there's going to be an event for it in March). They're not going to have a full Direct now if a next gen reveal is coming soon, most of the lineup this year will probably be Switch 2 games so they can't really reveal much about their 1st party plans until they're ready to show the Switch 2.
@Specters Yup, that's what it's all about. Gutting the actual products and IPs just so they can make their already humungous pile of money even bigger. Corporate executives have really gotten out of control.
@ZombAid82 Buying up competitors to give Nintendo and Sony less games still helps them. Also they're ruthless capitalists that only care about their bottom line (read: how much their executives are making, not the little guys actually making sure they have something to sell). They're pretty much a cancer on the industry. Always have been, always will be for as long as they remain in business.
@PipeGuy64Bit Everyone knows Microsoft doesn't care about 3D platformers. They just want to make shooty war bang games and don't really care about much of anything else.
HGSS, Zero Mission, and Samus Returns are such good choices. Definitely my Top 3. I guess I'd have to go with HGSS as my #1, but tough choice between the three.
Just wait until Sonic x Shadow Generations releases, short of major technical issues with the re-release, that game should rocket into the Top 5 (maybe even Top 3).
@Nintendo_Thumb Worth noting this is a remaster of a game from 2011 and plays similarly to Unleashed, Colors, and Forces (although it's most similar to the 360/PS3 version of Unleashed). Set your expectations accordingly.
As far as the "pick-a-lane mechanic", if you mean the Quick Step, where you could press a button and instantly sidestep to another "lane", yes that is in this game.
@Grumblevolcano The Biolizard battle in this one seems to be completely different from the 3DS version's battle. I don't think they're just plopping 3DS content in here, I think Shadow's content is built from the ground up.
My guess is that they're going to structure it similarly to the main story, one level from a past game and a few bosses, but they'll only pull from games that Shadow appeared in. So probably 1 stage from the Dark story in SA2, 1 stage from Heroes, 1 stage from ShTH, and 1 stage from 06.
Based on the trailer it seems we can already make out some of their choices. The trailer seems to show Final Chase from SA2 and Westopolis from ShTH, as well as boss battles with the Biolizard and Black Doom. So we might be able to rule out the possibility of Radical Highway returning from the 3DS already.
I'm curious what they might pull from Heroes and 06 though. Perhaps Egg Fleet, White Acropolis, and the 2nd battle against Mephiles (the one that takes place in Dusty Desert at the end of Shadow's story in 06)? That would be thematically appropriate.
@HammerGalladeBro I think the Shadow sections are getting more promotion because it's new content whereas anyone that's played the original Generations more or less knows what they're getting in the Sonic campaign. I don't think the Shadow campaign is going to be super long, they'd probably only feature games that Shadow had a role in which would probably just limit them to SA2, Heroes, ShTH, and 06.
Also it just occurred to me this is the first time a "real" boost game is playable on a Nintendo console. And might I say for anyone that missed the 360/PS3 versions of Unleashed and Generations, you are in for a treat. These two are by far the best boost games. Some of the others like Colors and Forces were a bit gimped and the levels weren't designed well to take advantage of it, but this game you can literally boost to your heart's content (provided you have the skill to maintain it) and blast through the level incomprehensibly fast. You want to know why some Sonic fans love the boost games? You'll understand a lot more by playing this game, the ones you've probably played aren't really the ones boost fans will point to as being great.
@link3710 It's far closer to 94 than the Minis. There's a few levels where you have to guide minis to the goal, but they just attempt to follow Mario instead of walking around automatically like Lemmings.
@HeadPirate I'm not familiar with most of those, but Fairy Tail, The Seven Deadly Sins, and The Rising of the Shield Hero are definitely not magic SCHOOL series. They're medieval fantasies, but they're all slightly different in execution. Fairy Tail is a magic guild. Shield Hero is an isekai. Seven Deadly Sins is pretty much a typical adventure series. There's some similarities yes, but you most definitely cannot throw them all in the bucket of "magic school" like Harry Potter. Magic is the only common thread in all 4 of those and that's about as vague a connection as they come.
@JokerCK They pretty much admitted the reason. "but with its aesthetic parallels to Pokémon, it's been the main talking point for many of us as we await the first Nintendo Direct of the year and the inevitable Pokémon Presents showcase at the end of February."
It's because there's not much we know about for Nintendo games coming this year. We've pretty much got nothing until we see a Direct, Pokemon Present, or Switch 2 announcement of some kind.
@cmbaum I was actually disappointed with Nyakuza Metro. They marketed it like it was a GTA clone with that cat costume, but it was mainly just more platforming. Also, the ending was very anticlimactic, you don't really fight The Empress in a true boss battle, you just escape on an elevator and she can't fight you because of the policemen there. It's... fine, but I wouldn't put it in the category of "best DLC" for sure.
The Booster Course Pack doesn't belong on this list, sorry. It's quantity over quality, it adds a bunch of cheap mobile ports that don't match the game's artstyle or course design.
Well, we knew this was coming eventually. The introduction of livestream events like Nintendo Directs made E3 obsolete. Still though, it kind of hurts regardless since E3 had some great announcements. F.
@Nool Oh whoop de freaking doo. Another ancient retro console that could run on a freaking calculator. For the same price point Microsoft and Sony are giving you EVERY console, not just consoles from the 20th century. So where are the GC, DS, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U Nintendo would need to make them competitive with that offer?
@Lizuka Why? I don't really see how backups are an issue. The only potential issue I see is with transfers, but if they made it work between 3DS VC and Bank I think they could do so between NSO and Home.
@vio What's really shameful is that they're charging $50 for just N64 and GBA games. At that price point we should be getting GC and even Wii games too. Not "whining" to say that their retro offerings are woefully barren, doubly so when compared to what Microsoft and Sony offer for their subscription plans.
@dustinprewitt On the N64 or in general? Because there's a gaping hole on the GB's lineup in the form of the main series Pokemon games (we don't even have Red and Blue FFS, just spinoffs, no main series games whatsoever).
I suspect Smash will get the MK8D treatment next gen. No main game on Switch 2, just Ultimate Deluxe with DLC included and even MORE Fighters Passes and that's all we get for the entire generation. I think they might need an entire generation to figure out what's next for Smash and we won't see Smash 6 until Switch 3/whatever's after Switch 2, it does seem like in situations where they're struggling to figure out what's next for an IP, they tend to skip a gen.
@Sherlock- That would be great if we actually freaking saw said game. We haven't had a Yooka-Laylee game since 2019 and that was a 2.5D side entry (not to say it wasn't great but it's not a direct sequel, it's something different), the first game was in 2017 and 6 years later no sequel. One spiritual successor 20 years later and nothing else doesn't exactly fill the void that well.
@norwichred False equivalency. Nintendo has so many IPs that it just can't give them all attention and most of the ones they left behind just haven't sold that well. Banjo-Kazooie meanwhile, sold 3.6 million on the N64 and has the potential to reach 5-10 million on a far more popular console. The reason that IP isn't getting made is much different and far more insidious, because Microsoft bought up companies like Rare to pad out their library (because they can't seem to make their own IPs so they just buy them), but Microsoft is a culture clash so they ended up driving away Rare's talent so they have no one left to make the IP. So basically the IP is rotting away because Microsoft wanted to buy up all of the square pegs to fit in their round holes.
Translation: "We don't actually want to bring it back because it doesn't mesh with our brand and we gutted the team that made it, so we'll just say we're looking for the right opportunity as an excuse forever."
Honestly, the ENTIRETY of ALttP/OoT style Zelda games are Metroidvanias, just an action/adventure flavor of Metroidvania. You explore the maps finding items that help you explore even more of the map, the dungeon items open up more of the overworld in the same way that Samus' abilities might.
Anyway, the Water Temple was challenging, but a good type of challenging. It was a puzzle that you really need to use your head to figure out. And yeah, there's some QoL issues fixed in the 3DS remake that make it even better (and people wonder why some of us want dual screens back for the Switch 2).
@WaffleRaptor01 I don't think they really need to do much. Mainly just adding extra events to the story (for example, the end of the Child Arc/beginning of the Adult Arc feels really rushed). I'm not expecting Pulitzer Prize material from Nintendo. Technically that might fall more under content than story (what I really want is more dungeons/questlines at that point in the game), but it does require storyline changes.
It's passable as is, but it really could stand out more with a remake. The map could stand to be bigger and the story could use much more fleshing out. I would very much like to see a FFVII-esque reimagining for it, otherwise just stick with porting the original and 3DS remakes, they'll do if they don't want to get ambitious.
That's a very good question, what IS going on at Playtonic? It's been 6 years since Yooka-Laylee and 4 since Impossible Lair, feels like their next game should be ready to show soon.
@nintendo90 The whole DLC is just recycled from Tour. Even the retro tracks are mainly just touched up versions of their Tour remakes. The whole Booster Course pack was just a cheap Tour port disguised as a new expansion.
@Maxz There's a sucker born every minute I guess. And you wonder where casual hatred comes from.

None, save DS and 3DS for a future dual screen console (hopefully the Switch 2), the Switch can't exactly handle dual screens super well.
