Re: 3D Out Run Developers Talk Over Bringing Classic Racing Back to the 3DS

BearHunger

The original arcade machine ran at 30 FPS, which was different from other titles of the time. In response to this, M2 has managed a feat of technical wizardry, allowing only the game's roads to run at 60 FPS while all other objects whiz by the player at 30 FPS.

It sounds from the interview that that is not the case. Rather, they converted the whole game to 60 FPS bit by bit.

When we showed Nintendo what we were working on, it was still in a state where the 30 FPS and 60 FPS bits were mixed half and half. Later we had something that was mostly running at 60, but there were still bits like the crash scenes that were still at 30. There were a number of 30 FPS scenes still in there, actually…

But when you get it to that point, you start thinking, “Isn’t this good enough?” But in the final stretch from beta up to the final version, more and more bits and pieces of 60 FPS kept creeping in. And before I knew it, everything was running at 60 FPS. Toward the end, I couldn’t even tell what was being changed in the last few updates.

@Obito_Tennyson Only if you think that not one out of DuckTales, both versions of Aladdin, and every game Mickey's ever starred in is good.

@SuperMalleo Isn't Infinity considered good?

But yeah, it's like every animated movie or TV show tie-in has to be a beat 'em up.

Re: Review: Heptrix (Wii U eShop)

Given the recent influx of shovelware on the Nintendo eShop — both on the 3DS and Wii U — it seems like the right time for new developers to ask themselves an important question before taking the plunge into the indie scene: why?

Because they like making video games, possibly as a side hobby, and figure they might as well put something out there. The chance of a modicum of money is a nice incentive.

Mobile devices' app stores sound like the better homes for this, though it seems progressively more like the eShop isn't much different from one of those.

So haphazard. Is that cactus supposed to be prickly? It doesn't look prickly. And what's it doing in a snow level? Come to think of it, what's that buzz saw blade doing there sticking out of the snow?

Re: Table Top Racing: World Tour Dev Isn't Sure About Bringing The Game To Wii U Because Of Mario Kart 8

BearHunger

They've got Mario Kart, so is it really in their interest to do this, I'm not entirely sure.

So hold on, let me see if I'm understanding this correctly. They're not sure if Nintendo would allow them to release this game because it would compete with Mario Kart 8.

Is that actually… a thing? I think Nintendo would resent the release of every third-party platformer on their system if that were the case. This doesn't make sense to me.

Re: Video: Early Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric Footage Hints At Game-Breaking Bugs

I was under the impression that a game-breaking bug crashed the game, prevented you from completing the game, made you restart your save file, let your character fly, or other such horrible or awesome thing.

I had this same glitch happen in Rabbids Go Home, except by complete accident rather than jumping on the boundaries of the level. I had to restart the level. Not quite the same as the invisible barrel glitch from Donkey Kong Country 2.

Re: Sounds Like Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Sure Could Use A Break

BearHunger

He brings the work on himself, if he doesn't trust his team with it. To be fair though, there is a ton of pressure on these guys to make the best game possible, so I can see why Sakurai would want to go overboard like that. He probably doesn't want anyone but himself to mess anything up, and when projects are made without sticking to a leader's vision, well, they can fall apart. (Not that having one person in control of everything is perfect either, of course…)
