It's time for the Nintendo Download update, North American gamers, and this week's update brings massive releases on Wii U and 3DS. Beyond the big-name retail titles we have some new download-only titles, a host of other retail downloads both old and new, retro GBA DK and a variety of discounts and demos. There's a lot to cover, so let's get on with it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update news this week? Don't cry, the details are right here.
Wii U eShop
Alphadia Genesis (Natsume, $14.99) — An RPG that's already available on smartphones, this typically has a tale of two kingdoms while — we're sure — saving the world will be part of the deal. Promising intense battles and dynamic camera angles among its features, we'll see how this stacks up on the home console.
Snake Den (Game Bytes, $3.99) — Those with very old Nokia phones may remember free game 'Snake', way back before games were even common on phones. This looks like a more colourful version of that very game in which you try to avoid colliding with your own tail while collecting items, though there are 100 levels and local multiplayer thrown in. We'll get tangled up in it for a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
DK: King of Swing (Nintendo, $6.99) — This certainly qualifies as one of DK's quirkier titles, and that's considering his heritage in releasing bongo sets. A Game Boy Advance puzzle title, essentially, you use the shoulder buttons to swing between pegs or grab rocks to throw at enemies; in addition to the story there's a 'Jungle Jam' mode that was multiplayer on GBA but, unfortunately, will be single player-only on Wii U. We'll get into the swing of a review soon.
Wii U Retail Downloads
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Nintendo, $59.99) — The time has finally come for eager Smash fans, with the home console version of the fourth generation in the fighting franchise. It boasts an enormous roster, a broad variety of stages and a range of favourite and new modes, along with substantial support for the amiibo range of figures. Thankfully after all the hype it lives up to expectations, as we explain in our Super Smash Bros. for Wii U review which will, don't forget, be updated once we've been able to fully sample the online play. Available from 21st November.
Watch Dogs (Ubisoft, $59.99) — The Wii U iteration of this open-world title has been delayed to such an extent that it'll likely arrive with little fanfare on the system, especially as this is the year's busiest period of game releases. Some have no doubt been waiting, however, and will hope that the action and hacking shenanigans come across well on Nintendo's console; we hope it's not a dog's dinner of a port and will let you know what we think soon.
The Amazing Spider-Man: Ultimate Edition (Activision, $39.99)
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Activision, $TBC)
Penguins of Madagascar (Little Orbit, $39.99)
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Jeopardy (Nordic Games, discounted from 25th November until 2nd December)
Wheel of Fortune (Nordic Games, discounted from 25th November until 2nd December)
The Letter (TreeFall Studios, $0.49 until 30th November, normally $1.99)
PING 1.5+ (NAMI TENTOU MUSHI, $2.49 from 26th November until 3rd December, normally $4.99)
Wii U Demo
ZaciSa's Last Stand (ZeNfa Productions, free)
3DS eShop
Battleminer (Wobbly Tooth, $9.99) — With a visual style clearly inspired by Minecraft, this tasks you with exploring the world, collecting and crafting items and then taking on deadly giant ants to rescue 'survivors'. That's all rather dramatic, though a Creation tool will allow you to mess about and create worlds if you need a change of pace; we'll see whether this is rather crafty or mining the depths of credibility in our upcoming review.
Chat-A-Lot (Teyon, $7.99) — Chat-A-Lot is a voice and text application for the Nintendo 3DS system. A first of its kind, the application will bring the Nintendo 3DS community much closer, easily connecting Nintendo 3DS owners with each other, whether it be locally and internationally. We'll bring you a review soon.
3DS Retail Downloads
Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (Nintendo, $39.99) — The long awaited remakes of the Game Boy Advance titles, these arrive around a year after Pokémon X & Y and utilise its 3D engine and a number of 3DS features. Far from being simple re-makes, these introduce new Mega Evolutions, the Soar ability and even new story elements; we cover these in detail in our Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire review. Available from 21st November.
The Amazing Spider-Man (Activision, $29.99)
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Activision, $TBC)
Penguins of Madagascar (Little Orbit, $29.99)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Activision, $29.99)
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Big Hero 6 Battle in the Bay (Game Mill Entertainment, $19.99 from 26th November until 10th December, normally $29.99)
Yumi's Odd Odyssey (Natsume, discounted from 25th November until 1st December)
Harvest Moon 3D: The Tale of Two Towns (Natsume, discounted from 25th November until 1st December)
Disney Frozen: Olaf's Quest (Avanquest Software, $19.99 from 26th November to 10th December, normally $29.99)
The Keep (Cinemax, $7.99 until 4th December, normally $12.99)
Classic Games Overload: Card and Puzzle Edition (Telegames Inc, $19.99 until 1st December, normally $29.99)
Real Heroes Firefighter 3D (Reef Entertainment, $4.99 from 25th November until 4th December, normally $9.99)
3DS Demo
Fishdom H2O: Hidden Odyssey (Cypronia, free)
Special Promotion

hhmm...lets see
Well, Smash on disc for me.
Oh, and @ThomasBW84, the Special Smash Promo of the CDs is for Jan 13th. Nov 13th would be cheating on everyone
Nothing for me this week. I'll start downloading stuff again when NA gets all of those DKC games.
Hopefully Alphadia Genesis is something...
@NintyMan I'm holding out hope for a surprise anniversary release like they did for Super Mario Kart a few months ago.
Duck smash bros I'm getting the letter
Now I KNOW Ubisoft wants watchdogs to fail on the Wii U.
Oh my God, Penguins of Madagascar or SMASH? Oh what difficult and cruel decision
Wait... If you have to get both smash games before November 13 for the sound track cd, then nobody will be able to get outside of reviewers... (Take the hint)...
any new 3DS themes this week?
@sinalefa Whoops!
@majinx07 Quite probably, but NoA doesn't list them in the DL update like Nintendo of Europe
already pre downloaded smash. hoping to buy watchdogs soon!
So does this mean that you have too register your copy of Smash Bros Wii U on your Club Nintendo Account & have the 3DS Version registered in order too unlock Mewtwo?
Well I have most of Smash Downloaded so I put Watch Dogs as I DL that yesterday. I wonder what that rpg might be like though.
Lucky 'murica getting Smash and Pokémon this week! ... is it next week yet~?
You scared me. For a minute I thought we were going to get the crappy Donkey Kong Country GBA games.
Smash and Pokemon but both physical. So nothing for me this week.
Ooh, The Keep actually looks pretty good, and for $8 sounds like a steal.
Physical copy of Smash and probably will be getting Omega Ruby for Christmas. So nothing for me this week.
@Robo-Knight That's a great question. I'm not entirely sure. I'm assuming at you don't have to because that promotion has nothing to do with Club Nintendo. I could be wrong though.
Edit: I was wrong. Here is what Nintendo of Europe's Twitter had to say about the promotion:
"Register both the #WiiU and #3DS versions of #SmashBros on Club Nintendo before 31/03 and get Mewtwo for free!"
However if you do not have both versions you can purchase Mewtwo for a TBD cost.
33% NOT downloading anything this week?
@cfgk24 What's wrong with that? I know I won't be...but I will be picking up a physical copy of Smash Bros.
Hmm, man I wish Nintendo would do sales at 1% the pace Sony does, that would be great. This is pitiful Oo
Not that it needed it, but SSB U should have gotten a demo, if only to show off amiibo support and an 8 player stage. Oh well, maybe Captain Toad will get a demo?
Big 3DS titles seem to get a lot more demos than Wi U. Pikmin 3 was nice but 15 months late.
Will be buying both Pokemon games on cartridge tomorrow, and maybe SSBU.
Was in Target yesterday and they had space for amiibo, SSBU and the 2 Pokemon games but surprisingly none of them were out yet.
Downloading Alpha Sapphire at midnight. I already preordered it from the eShop, just going to have to wait for them to send my code.
@jjmesa16 "However if you do not have both versions you can purchase Mewtwo for a TBD cost."
Dumb question, but where did you hear this from?
Smash is locked and loaded. What time does it go live online for EST North America?
Smash tonight for sure. Pokemon ORAS eventually. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric at some point. I don't want to pay $60 for Watch Dogs but, we'll see...I am highly curious about Battleminer. I think i'm ready to just download most of my games from now on.
@OneBagTravel I reckon midknight tonight.
Awesome! Now that Smash will finally be out for WiiU Nintendo can focus on other features and titles, such as: cross-game party chat, N64/DS Virtual Console, VC support overall, entice 3rd party developers to come back to the platform, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, NES Remix Pack, Kirby and the Rainbow Course, Yoshi's Woolly World, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Splatoon! 2015 promises so much already!
@audiobrainiac Oof, I was hoping to get get a full 8 hours of sleep tonight.
I've already got the physical copy of smash bros preordered, and probably picking it up at the midnight launch. Might grab ping 1.5+ while it's on sale.
Any estimate on how many millions WiiUs want 3rd parties to be sold this Holiday to come back to WiiU?
@OneBagTravel haha yeah I kind of figured I wouldn't.
Everyone's like "meh" for movie games lol.
Physical copy of Smash is on the way, so it's BATTLEMINER for me.
I'm surprised no one broke the street date yet. Even if it happens today it's less then 24 hours now so no big deal.
Could have least mentioned Persona Q.
sigh... I had a feeling that the boring DK game would be the only VC game. Well, at least I got smash and pokemon.
@Robo-Knight Also from Nintendo of Europe's Twitter.
"Mewtwo will be available to purchase later in #SmashBros, for those who don't register both versions."
Here is the full article on Mewtwo:
http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Campaigns/Super-Smash-Bros-Club-Nintendo-Promotion/Super-Smash-Bros-Club-Nintendo-Promotion-937174.html
Already pre-downloaded Smash so that a no brainer. For the time being Pokemon AS and Watch Dogs will just be on my wishlist.
@jjmesa16 Is that just for the UK or everywhere?
Latest Adventure Time game also came out on 3DS this week. I've been playing and it is pretty alright, despite some graphical bugs. Not sure why it wasn't mentioned. If you guys need me to do a review, just let me know.
$15 for Alphadia? Holy carp, why? It's just a straight port with a retranslated script right?
Well I will definitely be getting smash tomorrow (physical) and try to get watch dogs soon...but if not soon for Christmas. Also interested in Alphadia Genesis but probably wait till january for it.
Getting Smash as a physical copy. Thatll keep me busy.
Hey at least we finally got a DK game.... it's like they enjoy messing with us.
People should be ashamed for paying $60 for Watch Dogs
@Robo-Knight Says the same thing on the NA side as well, just a bit less certain with the "may" part.
http://club2.nintendo.com/smash-promo/
Physical copy of Smash Bros. is all.
Alphadia Genesis and King of Swing for me. Already have Smash preordered and want to get Watch Dogs physical.
@rjejr I played a Captain Toad demo in a Super Target last weekend. There was also something for Smash there, but I am not sure if it was a video or a demo. Since I know I am getting Smash, I was more interested in Capt. Toad.
But I agree, any demos that appear in the kiosks should be available either immediately or shortly after on the Wii U. And please remove the stinkin' play limits on them, it's just silly.
Nothing.
Getting physical versions of Smash Bros, Omega Ruby, and Watch_Dogs.
It should have gotten released here in europe as the same time as USA >_>
@NintyMan They didn't miss the opportunity to release a DK title however.
I'm interested in Battleminer, will want to see how the first Minecraft clone came out.
Disc Smash for me!
Disc Smash for me this week, Toad coming up soon! Great time of the year.
@ultraraichu Thanks for answering @Robo-Knight's question. I certainly hope it comes to other regions. It doesn't really matter to me, as I own both, but I'm sure many people will only own one version.
Does anybody know how does the Mewtwo thing works? Will you be getting a code or how would you be getting the DLC?
Well, at least we got some kind of Donkey Kong game for DKC's be-earlied twentieth anniversary.
But hey, playing as DK in Super Smash Bros. is plenty fun!
Meh...
Physical Smash for me, also the MK8 DLC now that I have enough for an eshop card.
Honestly, The Keep looks pretty interesting, and I have just enough remaining balance to get it on sale. Just looked at the review on this site. Seems right up my alley.
No downloads, but I'm getting a physical copy of Smash tomorrow! I can't wait!
I'm not actually downloading anything. But, I do have SSBWU and Pokemon OR on reserves, which I'll grab at midnight. Along with the adapter and some Amiibos.
SSBWU and WD for me
Never put effort into a harvest moon game, is this one any good?
Embrace the Battleminer.... All hail Battleminer...
Jk jk, waiting for a review or two.
I'll get Smash as soon as I have a little more money. In the mean time... not sure.
@LegatoSkyheart Troll spotted!
Nothing for me this week, since I'll be getting Smash 4 and Pokemon physically.
@jeb_leeds No, it isn't. I actually don't sell any of my games unless they provide zero value to me at all, and Harvest Moon 3D A Tale of Two Towns was one of those games.
Your money is best spent elsewhere.
I don't care for Smash so I'll probably book Watch Dogs. Never felt the need to rush out and get it on launch for my PS3 so I'll just support Wii U 3rd parties instead.
Smash boxed version for me!
King of Swing can give me my DK fix.
@Wilford111 Thanks for the info!
@Darknyht - I was in my tiny Target yesterday but no demo. Thinking about taking my kids to the Queens Mall next week, maybe they'll have it there.
But yeah it still seems silly we have to work so hard for something that could easily be downloaded to our Wii U systems WHILE WE SLEEP.
@NbaJunkie Don't do it! This game sucks and is poorly optimized!
DK: King of Swing...
DK: King... of... Swing..?
I! DON'T! EVEN!
I'm sorry Nintedo of America, I'm just... What? Why? No, you... you don't do that... Wow, just...
It's Donkey Kong Country's 20th Anniversary, and you give us this?!?! I've been patient with the NA Virtual Console but this is probably the most upsetting thing they've done yet. I have the games and an SNES to play them on, so I'm not upset that I can't play them, but I am upset at the fact that it's the 20th anniversary tomorrow, the games are released in all other regions, there are other people who still won't be able to play these incredible games because of this, and most of all, the released a totally different DK game that no one really cares about. If they wanted to release a GBA DK game, why not Mario VS. Donkey Kong? It's like Nintendo of America was like:
"Hey, DKC's 20th anniversary is soon! Let's release the DKC trilogy this Thursday!"
"Nah, let's release DK: King of Swing instead!"
"Okay, that sounds good! That'll totally be enough to satisfy everyone! TROLOLOLO-"
Seriously, I wouldn't be nearly as upset if DK: King of Swing hadn't been released. It almost seems like they think that's good enough, like people will just take any Donkey Kong game and be satisfied. Nope, doesn't work like that.
/rant
You guys in Europe, you can get ORAS now if you don't have a NNID. You can change your region to Australia, download it then change your region back
@rjejr I normally don't even bother. I am getting too old to be standing at a kiosk in the middle of Target or Gamestop playing video game demos.
For all of the things I do not like about Xbox, the one thing they got very right was the requirement of a trial for every XBLA game and downloadable demos. Most of my game library on that console was due to being able to do that (and Gold Member sales).
I'll get Smash, Watch Dogs, and Alphadia Genesis, so I won't complain about DKC this week.
@Darknyht - I wouldn't go looking for demos for myself either but as a dad living in suburbia and not teaching my kids how to live off the land (we are so unprepared for the zombie apocalypse) I have to teach them how to hunt down the ever elusive Wii U demo.
And I've always thought MS had the demo requirement right, but it's kind of a wash w/ having to pay $50 a year to stream Netflix. (I know they don't anymore, but I haven't looked into buying any Xbox system in many years. Never owned 1, probably never will. And I'm teaching my kids to not want 1 either, but we'll see how peer pressure goes once they hit high school.)
@jeb_leeds I done a decent bit of research on it and personally know a couple of people who say its one of the best. That is very relative though. I do know there are some glitches in the 3ds version (there was a ds version). I have also read in some more recent posts that the 3ds digital download has fixed the bugs. Also keep in mind that every time I have staked it on the eshop its always 19.99 in the US shop. So its not really on sell this week and I am not sure why NintendoLife posted it as its not even in the price drops.
Please Nintendo, release a Smash Bros for Wii U demo tomorrow. I'm getting the physical game trough mail, so I won't be able to play day one. A demo would be really nice.
I hope I can pick up a Smash Bros. bundle tomorrow and after that I'll probably be broke so nothing else for me this week
Won't be able to get Smash til Christmas, but my cousins are getting it and giving me the club Nintendo code so I can nab those CDs! Plus I'm taking them to the midnight release, so I'll be playing it for sure!
Disc versions of smash and watchdogs. That it enough.
@rjejr The $35-50 a year I spent on Gold Membership irritated me. But only because I quickly soured on public online matches due to the community I encountered there. That really only left Netflix as the driving force for Gold Membership. I cashed out around the time of the horrible Xbox One announcement.
All that said, there are things I did like about Xbox. The fact a game purchase was tied to both my console and account, allowing me to take a game with me to play co-op with my brother on his console was something I miss. Being able to download trials from a browser at lunch to try when I got home. And as silly as it sounds, I miss my lightsaber and Peguins jersey on my avatar.
no wii u smash demo? disapointing
The Keep is a really good price. I already bought it. I love the game the 3d is sweet and the game has some decent puzzles to overcome. I think its one of the coolest looking 3d games.
No love for DK King of Swing? It's a fun little title. I'm actually on the fence with Smash Bros U but I never download retail titles. I've got Bayonetta 2 coming for Xmas, and there's too many great Wii-U titles coming up (Zelda U, Yoshi Wooly World, Toad Treasure Tracker, etc...) I gotta save up for. I like Smash Bros but it sucks without any friends to game with, even if Rosalina's in it...
@Darknyht in respect to Xbox they do Online so much better than Nintendo its like night and day. Also as we all know, one account for all systems is also huge. Sometimes I wonder why I don't just play Xbox but I don't . I hope beyond hope Nintendo will come to their senses in regards to how online play should be executed. I must say the online play with Fantasy Life has been a blast with my friends. It would be a huge deal if Nintendo would bring Dragon Quest X out. Also I wouldnt mind seeing an Xbox type of network where hooking up with friends is made so simple. I would even pay for membership. Its worth it. My son loves his xbox360. He plans to get a an XboxOne soon.
Disc/Cart Smash and Omega Ruby at midnight for me.
This cannot be, I downloaded Arphadia Genesis this past Sunday??? wtf
I have Alphedia Genesis on my Android Tablet and although I love the game I probably won't get it on the Wii-U. I don't know what's required in bringing these games from Tablet to consoles it just seems overpriced. I picked the game up on my android tablet for 1.99 during a kemco sale in the google play store. Don't get me wrong here the game is excellent in my opinion and J-RPG fans will enjoy it. Maybe 7.99 or 9.99 would have been a better price point.
I hope we'll get Spidey here in Europe and then a discount around Christmas time(?)
Oooh, a nice discount on the Keep. Goodie.
Already downloaded Smash. Still have some interest in WatchDogs, despite the horrible shenanigans Ubi has done with the release, waiting for some reviews...
@Windy People pay for online too on Xbox, do they not?
@WaLzgi yes there is a membership fee for Xbox live.
@Windy I guess it is a matter of opinion. I prefer to not have public chat over having it when playing since my experiences were mostly of man-children either singing into my ear badly or yelling/swearing at me because I was not playing "right" (right being defined as playing exactly as they would). It got irritating to have to leave the mic unplugged and totally mute people just to play a deathmatch, or to have random people show up with griefing as their only objective. So I was effectively paying $35-50 a year to be irritated and annoyed by random people.
My opinion is that while Nintendo has a long way to come with online connectivity, Microsoft's online community also has issues that are not addressed, especially in the FPS arenas.
Already have Smash pre-downloaded so I can guarantee I will be playing that as soon as I get home tomorrow! The wait is finally almost over!
Already got Super Smash Bros. downloaded so that's what I voted for.
@Darknyht I would probably have the same problems as well. Although I don't play FPS games. I've actually narrowed down my gameplay to pretty much RPG's. My son who is a grown man now plays a lot of destiny and I gotta be honest. I can't believe he kisses his mother with a mouth like that. I hear him through the door. We didn't raise him to talk that way. Cussing is such an ugly thing. It makes one look ugly and sound ugly. I jump on him all the time even though he is now grown up. He watches himself around me. I do gotta say I think Destiny is amazing. I guess that is where things get ugly with such connection. The things people say to each other. Its just a game.
Smash bros that is all, going to get Watch Dogs when it's on sale for a dollar.
we need an alpha and omega starter poll
Uh-oh guys! The Letter's on sale! Smash sales are going to plummet! nobody will be able to resist The Letter! But seriously, I wouldn't download The Letter even if it was free!
ahah, the $0.49 LETTER, what a steal its cheaper than the STAMP!
Smash is all I need for another couple of months! Yumi's Odd Odyssey? Perhaps I'll try to buy it before the discount period ends.
@RoomB31
LMAO you crack me up!
I'm just going to pretend that I actually downloaded a game... and that I live in North America....
