Smash Wii U DL Image

It's time for the Nintendo Download update, North American gamers, and this week's update brings massive releases on Wii U and 3DS. Beyond the big-name retail titles we have some new download-only titles, a host of other retail downloads both old and new, retro GBA DK and a variety of discounts and demos. There's a lot to cover, so let's get on with it.

Missed the European Nintendo Download Update news this week? Don't cry, the details are right here.

Wii U eShop

Alphadia Genesis (Natsume, $14.99) — An RPG that's already available on smartphones, this typically has a tale of two kingdoms while — we're sure — saving the world will be part of the deal. Promising intense battles and dynamic camera angles among its features, we'll see how this stacks up on the home console.

Snake Den (Game Bytes, $3.99) — Those with very old Nokia phones may remember free game 'Snake', way back before games were even common on phones. This looks like a more colourful version of that very game in which you try to avoid colliding with your own tail while collecting items, though there are 100 levels and local multiplayer thrown in. We'll get tangled up in it for a review.

Wii U Virtual Console

DK: King of Swing (Nintendo, $6.99) — This certainly qualifies as one of DK's quirkier titles, and that's considering his heritage in releasing bongo sets. A Game Boy Advance puzzle title, essentially, you use the shoulder buttons to swing between pegs or grab rocks to throw at enemies; in addition to the story there's a 'Jungle Jam' mode that was multiplayer on GBA but, unfortunately, will be single player-only on Wii U. We'll get into the swing of a review soon.

Wii U Retail Downloads

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Nintendo, $59.99) — The time has finally come for eager Smash fans, with the home console version of the fourth generation in the fighting franchise. It boasts an enormous roster, a broad variety of stages and a range of favourite and new modes, along with substantial support for the amiibo range of figures. Thankfully after all the hype it lives up to expectations, as we explain in our Super Smash Bros. for Wii U review which will, don't forget, be updated once we've been able to fully sample the online play. Available from 21st November.

Watch Dogs (Ubisoft, $59.99) — The Wii U iteration of this open-world title has been delayed to such an extent that it'll likely arrive with little fanfare on the system, especially as this is the year's busiest period of game releases. Some have no doubt been waiting, however, and will hope that the action and hacking shenanigans come across well on Nintendo's console; we hope it's not a dog's dinner of a port and will let you know what we think soon.

The Amazing Spider-Man: Ultimate Edition (Activision, $39.99)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Activision, $TBC)

Penguins of Madagascar (Little Orbit, $39.99)

Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts

ZaciSa's Last Stand (ZeNfa Productions, free)

3DS eShop

Battleminer (Wobbly Tooth, $9.99) — With a visual style clearly inspired by Minecraft, this tasks you with exploring the world, collecting and crafting items and then taking on deadly giant ants to rescue 'survivors'. That's all rather dramatic, though a Creation tool will allow you to mess about and create worlds if you need a change of pace; we'll see whether this is rather crafty or mining the depths of credibility in our upcoming review.

Chat-A-Lot (Teyon, $7.99) — Chat-A-Lot is a voice and text application for the Nintendo 3DS system. A first of its kind, the application will bring the Nintendo 3DS community much closer, easily connecting Nintendo 3DS owners with each other, whether it be locally and internationally. We'll bring you a review soon.

3DS Retail Downloads

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (Nintendo, $39.99) — The long awaited remakes of the Game Boy Advance titles, these arrive around a year after Pokémon X & Y and utilise its 3D engine and a number of 3DS features. Far from being simple re-makes, these introduce new Mega Evolutions, the Soar ability and even new story elements; we cover these in detail in our Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire review. Available from 21st November.

The Amazing Spider-Man (Activision, $29.99)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Activision, $TBC)

Penguins of Madagascar (Little Orbit, $29.99)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Activision, $29.99)
