Re: Two New Hamster ACA Titles Dropping Next Week On Switch eShop

BearHunger

I do not recommend Magical Drop III. It is much too demanding and fast-paced to scratch the Bust-a-Move itch. I say this with regards to both games' vs. modes--Puzzle Bobble's is more about risk and aim, Magical Drop's feels more about speed and reflexes.

Magical Drop's gameplay is more like Puzzle League, but harder because your reactions and thumbs need to be even faster, and vs. matches don't tend to last as long.

@ShadJV “We don't have a TV there so I set it up in table top mode and that worked fine!”

Good to hear! That's exactly why I thought this game would be perfect for Switch. It's portable like a laptop computer so you don't need a TV nearby, but it's quick and easy to connect it back to a TV. Too bad about the auto sleep issue though.

Re: Rayman 3 and Rayman Advance Arrive on the North American Wii U VC Tomorrow

BearHunger

I'm quite surprised by this. This is not the best way to play Rayman, considering the blown up sprites and downgraded music. I did like how Rayman isn't knocked backwards when he's hit, though.

Rayman 3 is a typical oddball portable Rayman game, being basically a 2D side-scrolling adaptation of Rayman 2 with some Hoodlums thrown in. At least Rayman's fists actually leave his body when he punches in this game, though. Too bad the levels gained from connecting to the GameCube version of Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc will likely be inaccessible. It's probably not a major loss; I don't think I played all of those.

Re: Review: Super Boss Gaiden (SNES)

I am under the impression that most of the lousy, short eShop games are also made by one- or two-person-teams.

Anyway, cool review. For a moment I thought it would be another old Japan-exclusive game, but this is fairly interesting in its own right.

[Cross-posting on the forum thread] The top banner dealie keeps disappearing and reappearing. (I wish it would just disappear.)

Everything is too big now. I'm using a 13-inch laptop that is not always connected to a big monitor. I don't like how more and more sites have been becoming less small-monitor friendly.

Yeah yeah, I'm complaining. Hey, it's constructive feedback.

“Don't touch golden finger by hands.” I love this.

Great feature! I hadn't even heard of this system before the article from two years back. How about one on the almost nonexistent Super A'Can and its twelve confirmed games next? (It would be not be feasible, but it would be cool.)

Re: Review: Kirby Mass Attack (Wii U eShop / DS)

BearHunger

In terms of Kirby's DS adventures, this probably isn't his grandest outing

I disagree. Kirby Super Star Ultra does come close, but it feels like the anthology it is rather than a great big Kirby adventure.

As for the game itself, it's great! The variety and ideas in the level design are so cool and the soundtrack, while of pretty low sound quality, does an outstanding job setting the tone. The Kirby Air Ride songs were the best ones.

Re: Review: Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. (3DS)

BearHunger

Europe got the long end of the stick this year! I would much rather have this game here in the US this December instead of January than have Captain Toad last December instead of this year's January.

…If you can understand that run-on there.

Re: Review: Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures (Wii U eShop / SNES)

BearHunger

That last paragraph is 100% false! You need about as much nostalgia for this as you do for a classic cartoon: none, because it's timeless and funny. The only problem is that it can get a little repetitive when aiming for a high completion percentage; Pac-Man really really wants a soda from the vending machine.

Re: Takashi Tezuka on Mario's Success and His Hopes for the Future of the Character

BearHunger

Ol' Mario's great and all, but I'm glad not every series is like this or has this philosophy behind it. In particular I'm glad Sonic didn't go down this path. The old rival series are basically the antitheses of each other within the platform game genre now, which is fine by me.

@Mister_Wu

Rayman Origins and Legends showed us how good looking 2D cartoon-style platform games can be, so I hope that Nintendo seriously consider this possibility.

I think Wario Land: The Shake Dimension is a better example, as its more traditional animation would really suit the art style of the Super Mario series (Super Mario World, Kart, 3D World, etc.). It would be very cool to have Mario gameplay with that kind of graphics!

Re: Review: Splatoon (Wii U)

BearHunger

If you're expecting Splatoon to stand up on its own as a single-player experience you're going to be sadly disappointed, though. The entire campaign will only last you between 3-5 hours on average and, as enjoyable an experience as it is, this reviewer was left wanting more than what was offered.

That's all I needed to know.

Re: Review: Donkey Kong 64 (Wii U eShop / Nintendo 64)

BearHunger

"US and JP run at 60 Hz and ~30 fps, but PAL runs at 50 Hz and ~25 fps, which is 1.2 times slower. However, the lag compensation speeds up the kongs so they move as fast as in the NTSC versions. Everything besides movement (cutscenes, menus, enemies, ...) is slower than in NTSC."

I wonder if that makes some of the race challenges a bit easier.

Re: Review: WarioWare Touched! (Wii U eShop / DS)

BearHunger

@Starz Then you weren't playing hard enough.

I was reckless with my touch screen, much like with N64 joysticks playing Super Smash Bros. With this game, the biggest challenge is to win and go easy on the touch screen at the same time.
