Re: Metroid Prime 4's Sweet New Trailer Builds The Hype For Next Month's Launch

Arpie

Not having a direct because Metroid is story based makes a lot of sense. The problem is one of perception. Nintendo seem to have been playing down this game. In the last direct the release date and introduction of the bike were in a 90 second segment that was bundled in within a other bits and bobs section. Normally it would be expected to be a headline 5 min section for an important game. Not mentioning it since hasn't helped.

This trailer hasn't really helped much. Nice to see some marketing but it's not great. MP1 and Fusion quickly got me into the series in 2001 and it's been my favourite Nintendo franchise ever since. I want to be hyped for this game but so far nothing has grabbed me. Plus the snap wheelie bike footage is atrocious, should never have been included.

Re: Gallery: Here's A Closer Look At The London Pop-Up Nintendo Store's Sweet Merch

Arpie

I'm due to go tomorrow morning but following this article I'm not sure it's worth the train fare from West London. Very few exclusives and a small range of IPs. It's an absolute own goal not having London T-Shirts, Tokyo shirts are cool but aren't really a momento the way a London shirt would be.

On a slightly different tangent it's a bit worrying there is absolutely no Metroid merch. Prime 4 is the big Christmas release and a return to a series that had a positive boost on Switch. Along with the complete lack of advertising it's not looking good that Nintendo have any interest in it.

Re: Talking Point: What Was Your First Legend Of Zelda Game?

Arpie

First one was technically Ocarina of Time which I got day one for my N64. I didn't enjoy it and despite repeated attempts never got much beyond an hour in. It put me off the series for a long time.

However I got the Links Awakening remake free with my Switch Lite. And I loved it, blasted through it in a few days. It's one of my favourite games on Switch. So I'm more inclined to say it was my first proper introduction to the series.

Re: Metroid Dread Is About To Become The Best-Selling Game In The Series

Arpie

@Zeldawakening couldn't agree more can't understand all these puff articles today treating this like it was some sort of triumph. Yes it is not a failure (which is good for the series) but equally it's not some amazing return to form. Look at Prime, every time the Gamecube is mentioned Prime is as well, above even the Mario and Zelda releases on the platform. Dread is barely in the conversation now let alone in a decade. Prime is still thought as one of the best action /adventure games to this day and Dread isn't even the best Metroidvania out now.

This is not to say it's a bad game, it's not. But it's nothing special, it's a perfunctory performance in a series that sadly underperforms. Metroid is my favourite franchise but Dread has done nothing to convince me of it's long term future. All hope still rests on Prime.

Re: Nintendo Really Wants You To Use A Wired Connection For Smash Bros. Ultimate

Arpie

@Varelius I'm sorry but I have to disagree here that it has nothing to do with Nintendo. My connection to the internet is fine, I can browse, play games and stream HD video all without drop out and with very low latency using my current wireless connection on many different devices (and regularly with several devices at once).

They have effectively said they do no have faith in their product's (the Switch) ability to connect wirelessly to the internet and maintain a connection good enough to play Smash online. That is not mine or anyone else who has a wireless connection fault , it's the fault of the Switch's wireless hardware. If Nintendo want to go down an online path they needed to make sure that all the options they presented were up to scratch. Requiring an addition purchase of an official adapter just rubs salt into the wound.

I have worked with both wired and wireless networks all my life. Any company that specifically recommends wired over wireless for a consumer product has screwed up because nowadays there are very few situations where wireless is outclassed by wired by any meaningful amount (there are some but non-pro gaming is not one of them).

Re: Nintendo Really Wants You To Use A Wired Connection For Smash Bros. Ultimate

Arpie

@Varelius OK so how does it work? I only have a wireless connection and Nintendo have said that I will have a worse experience if I use wireless. I know the technical limitations of wireless vs wired. It doesn't change that fact it is up to Nintendo to overcome the challenges for all players and not leave half their customer base in the lurch.

Re: Nintendo Really Wants You To Use A Wired Connection For Smash Bros. Ultimate

Arpie

I thought this was a pretty disappointing and desperate move form Nintendo. We pay for online connectivity (at a very fair rate) so it shouldn't be too much to ask that all connection modes are fully supported. I have no way of getting online using a wire so why should I be penalised compared to those that can? When buying an online subscription Nintendo don't say that features may be limited by connection type.

Re: SNES Mini And NES Mini Combined Global Sales Surpass 10 Million Mark

Arpie

It's great to see the mini classics line doing so well. I missed b0th of these consoles when they were out and the minis have opened up a new world of retro gaming to me. I can see the argument about having game collections rather than plug and play consoles but for me the consoles win out. I don't know why but having played retro games collections before and the Wii's VC I was never able to get into the games. However maybe its the tactile nature of the console itself or having the correct controllers for the games but using both minis has been an absolute blast.

Re: AtGames Disappoints Again With The Bandai Namco Flashback Blast

Arpie

@YoshiAngemon I was a big SEGA fan back in the early to mid 90s and the N64 converted me to Ninty over the Saturn. Even now my younger self even now thinks a Nintendo made Mega Drive would be sacrilege! However if they could make the Mega Drive mini as good as the SNES mini I'm sure I could shut that little voice up!

Re: It Looks Like The Official Super Mario Encyclopedia Plagiarised A Fan-Made Wiki

Arpie

@Moroboshi876 @Glowsquid I'd like to thank you both of you for your excellent contribution to this discussion. Having people from both sides of story putting up views calmly and clearly has made this story a lot more interesting then a simple knee jerk reaction piece.

I do feel for the poor translator up against a deadline and with limited resources from Nintendo I can see their perspective. I am not saying it was right but at least understandable. Nintendo has to held somewhat accountable for this if they had provided the correct resources for the translators then none of this would have been necessary. They also had a chance to spot this at the fact checking stage. I hope some good comes out of this and in future printings of the book Dark Horse make the correct citations.

Re: UK Gaming Magazines GamesMaster and GamesTM Set To Close Next Month

Arpie

I had no idea GamesTM was still going, it was always the poor relation to Edge in the multi-format mags. Very saddened to hear GamesMaster is going however. It used to have a very unique voice and a bigger sense of fun then any of the other mag (except maybe the old N64/NGC before it became NGamer).

Re: Review: Starlink: Battle For Atlas - A Shining Example Of Open World Star Fox Done Right

Arpie

So annoyed Amazon lost my pre-order for this will have to wait before I can finally play it. Game looks amazing and the general positive reviews I have ready around the web have me chomping at the bit to get stuck in. It's been a long time since the last decent space fighter game and it's one of my favourite genres. Not to bothered about much of the other toys to go with this but the Scrambler looks like a cool F1 car in space so may pick it up when inevitable reduced.

Re: This Lovely Boo Bean Bag Chair Will Steal Your Heart, And Your Money

Arpie

Wow that's a lot to pay to have a boo creepily stare at you whilst asleep. I'm amazed they insist on shipping this thing full, every beanbag I have ever bought has been shipped flat ready for your own beans. It makes an already over priced product even more unjustifiable. On the plus side it does look very well made.

Re: Last Year's N64 Trademark Has Finally Been Approved, N64 Mini On The Way?

Arpie

I fully expect a N64 Mini to be on the way but if we see it before the second half of next year I will be very surprised. This is the same trademark filing that has been floating around for ages and is just Nintendo protecting itself, the fact it's just granted is more to do with European bureaucracy than any actual indication a companies plans are imminent. Nintendo has stated several time 2018 is a consolidation year for the Mini line with Reggie himself saying they were focusing on NES and SNES sales over the Christmas period, I don't see them throwing the 64 in at the same time. More likely we will see the SNES and NES withdrawn to make way for the N64, remember both previous Minis launched into the market on their own.

I see the recent announcement of the PS Mini as making this even more unlikely. Why go toe to toe with Sony for the same market of nostalgia for the same generation. Let Sony have this Christmas whilst Nintendo focuses on 8 and 16 bit. Then the N64 will have next Christmas all to itself.

Re: Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Will Have IVs And EVs, Ditches Held Items And Abilities

Arpie

@Arehexes Nope it wasn't deep at all which is why it was such a good introductory game which a lot of people seem to be forgetting. It was my first ever introduction to RPGs and if it had had half of the gub the later generations had myself and a lot of people I know would not have stuck with the game. I would say that it was the simplicity of Gen. I that allowed Pokémon to become the success it is today.

Gen. II was a nice evolution of this and to my mind the perfect Pokémon experience. Everything from Gen. III onwards just became stats for stats sake and started to disappear into t's own importance, no fun trying to organising all those things at once.

It's been 20 years since Gen. I so a new simpler introductory game to get younger (and returning older) audiences back into Pokémon is well overdue. The only disappointing thing about this game is the loss of wild encounters and the addition of the mega evolution fluff.

Re: Yoshi’s Crafted World Is Coming To The Switch In Spring 2019

Arpie

Of all the first party announcements in this direct this was the only one that grabbed my attention. I'm not a big platformer fan but I have a soft spot for Yoshi and this does look genuinely interesting. The flip mechanic reminds me a lot of Super Paper Mario and the art style is beautifully crafted. Name is a bit clunky but nothing was ever going to sound good after Yoshi's Flipping World.
