@SuperRetroArt yeah, but obviously would not be able to use pirated software or the MiG cartridge again without getting that new account banned. If I’m right, it also means you can’t access digital games you’ve bought on eShop (maybe that’s where the focus of the challenge could lie?).
Of course, some could just use the Switch legitimately and use the MiG cartridge again on an OG Seitch instead. Or emulate on PC if they were so enthusiastic to do so.
@Dhaladog it blocks a user from accessing the Nintendo servers. It isn’t bricked though. That implies that it won’t boot to the OS, so it doesn’t even turn on. It is essentially just a ‘brick’ at that point - hence the term.
If Nintendo block your account from their servers, you can still use the device offline.
@Jumwa Was going to say. This should really be reflected in the article. It’s disingenuous to say that Nintendo are bricking the console.
However, why restrict the console in its entirety? Don’t PlayStation and Xbox just ban the associated account and not the system? Shouldn’t Nintendo do the same?
@FredBiletnikoff I did read it. You’re incredibly condescending. The review is titled in a way indicating that it is a review of the game. There is a line stating that it will FOCUS on the additions of the Switch 2 edition. Having a focus on something does not mean that it is entirely and ONLY centred on that focus.
I appreciate the other members comment, pointing out that it offers a different perspective from a value prospect, hence the lower than expected score - reviews are subjective, I get it.
But if we were face to face having this conversation, I doubt you be so rude.
@the_beaver That’s a fair comment. I already had the DLC and I have NSO, so it hasn’t cost me anything extra, so I guess the ‘cost’ aspect never crossed my mind. Thanks.
@FredBiletnikoff I did ?!? I don’t know what it is about my comment that indicates otherwise. I checked, and I’ve definitely commented under the correct article. Not quite sure why that’s a ‘facepalm’ for you.
@Dhaladog I also have the game on Steam and I have a Steam Deck. I’m still picking this up though. It comes with the Phantom Liberty DLC (which I don’t have on Steam), which will be new. I can obviously get the DLC on Steam and it would be cheaper, but I love playing portably and this defiiitely looks like the best way to play it portable.
Plus, I’m a sucker for overhyping myself for these sort of things.
I was only thinking the other day that we could see MP2 on NSO. It’s not the way I’d like it to come back (similar to how I’d pretty a ‘remake’ of Wind Waker HD rather than it being on NSO).
But MP3 would need to be a remake/re-release. A sort of Hunters remake bundle with would be pretty neat, and tie neatly into Prime 4?
Throwing my hat in the ring amongst the other comments asking for a Switch 2 version.
I’d be happy with a full Switch 2 edition, or even if they just patched the Switch version to clean up the visuals, performance and bugs. A PS4 level MK1 on Switch 2 would be great.
@NielsNL I agree. And it’s more than just being able to re-sell it. It’s options. Options are never bad. At the very least you can decide not to buy a Game Key Card version and buy purely digital. Personally, I find the idea much better than the ‘code in a box’ games. They’re a lot more user friendly. As you’ve said, it not only allows developers to use smaller capacity (cheaper) cards, but some games won’t actually fit on 64Gb, so it creates opportunities for bigger games to be available. You could just get the digital version, but some people just like having a box, or maybe they’re a kid and their parents don’t want to put a payment method on their account. Are we really so against ‘options’ that we are willing to gatekeep games from kids? As adults we can just decide to go digital, or if there is a more expensive ‘all on card’ option we can do that (e.g. AC3 is £12.99 for the ‘code in box’ on Amazon right now, or £26.48 for the ‘all on card’ version - or you can skip all the box versions and buy it on eShop - options!).
@anoyonmus yeah, I agree. I personally have no issue with digital games and I’m probably half and half of digital vs physical. But I game on PC as well, so I’m very used to being a digital gamer.
But those that don’t like digital, I guess this is a good half way measure? Maybe? It’s at least better than the ‘code in a box’ games.
@CoastersPaul Game key cards can be resold. You can only lend virtual game cards for up to two weeks and have to have a period of physical proximity to the person that you are lending them to in order to provide them with a copy.
So, with game key cards, you could play the game, complete it and then stick it on eBay and sell it. The licence ‘key’ is on the cart and not tied to the download of the game.
It's a little crazy that 'release date' is on the list. This is surely a given, to ensure pre-orders go up?
Aside from that, I'm hoping that we can see some Switch games running on Switch 2 and what/if the benefits are (I'm only hoping for increased performance, just to get some games running smoother). I'm a huge Metroid and Zelda fan. Metroid Prime 4 is a given, but I'm really hoping the long rumoured MP2 and MP3 remasters show (although, I've given up expecting it). Same for WW and TP remasters. Any of them would make this an awesome Direct for me. Both would be a dream. I think Mario is a given, whether it's a new 3D Mario or just MK9.
Aside from that, I'd like to see some decent 3rd party support (again, I expect the recent biggies to have some kind of showing, Baldurs Gate 3, Cyberpunk, and an Elden Ring complete edition with SotET seems like a slam dunk) and I'd LOOOOOOVE some new Nintendo/partnered franchise with a slightly more mature focus (I'm thinking like the old exclusives - something like Eternal Darkness).
@moodycat It was a pain in the ass, but after 1hr 10mins of being constantly warned that I'd tried to process my payment toomany times, it eventually let me check out and I secured my pre-order.
@KayFiOS it depends on how precious you are about the look. Any standard PC hub type dock will work with it and you can get them on Amazon for about $30. That'll give you HDMI out, DP out, a few USB's and Ethernet normally.
@roboshort there is a dock. In fact you don’t actually need a dock, you can just connect it to a monitor. As for controllers; the ones on the system don’t detach, but any (literally ANY) other controller can be use with it.
Another neat touch- the pre-order system has been designed in a way to beat scalpers. You have to put £4 down as a deposit and you also need to have made a Steam purchase prior to June 2021, all as a measure to express intent to buy (for yourself).
@NotoriousWhiz I don’t think you can install it on the SteamOS. There isn’t a version for that. Although I also don’t see performance being an issue on Windows either.
@dani3po yep… we saw the same video. It really is very interesting. With the right emulators you could even end up being able to play more ‘Nintendo’ games on this than you can on a Switch!
@NotoriousWhiz In the video. Also IGN have a hands on video with it. It’s just a PC that ships with the Steam Linux OS (Photon?), but you can just install Windows on it instead (which I imagine a majority of people would do). You can then run anything on it that you can run on a standard Windows PC. Ergo, Xbox app can be installed. They don’t specifically say ‘Xbox app’, but they make it very clear that you can install ANYTHING on it.
@The_New_Butler honestly, it was the realisation that I can install the Xbox app and play my GamePass games on it (natively, not streamed, but installed locally!) that made me instantly want this.
Bloody hell… at first glance that article title is horrendously heartless and shows poor taste. The pandemic is SO BAD that a made up character in a video game got delayed?
This really isn’t important when people are literally suffering (I don’t know if people are still dying in Japan- but still, c’mon… who cares in the grand scheme of things?).
Surely a more appropriate title would be ‘Pokemon GO Pikachu release delayed as pandemic hits developer Niantic’. ?
Nintendo: They’re the same. Games journalists: Are they different. Nintendo: They’re the same. Games journalists: But different, yeah? Nintendo: They’re the same. Games Journalists: Cool. We’ll go run an article and say that they could be different, because… that’d be nice.
The Nintendo UK Store is probably (one of) the most expensive place to order from. You’re paying a premium to enter this competition. A lot of other retailers are selling the game for £40-£42 with the same pre-order goodies (steel case and keyring).
@Porky that’s exactly what I don’t understand. I want to say ‘in real life that doesn’t happen’… but this is real life. I don’t get it. It’s like the person asking the questions is only doing so because they’ve been told to and they don’t actually care about the answer so long as they get ANY answer. The whole thing seems completely pointless.
@SteveT75 I’m perfectly calm. But you’re contradicting yourself. You weren’t commenting on what you thought was a better solution to a clear problem. To quote, you said “your metaphor is wrong” and then went on to explain that a concert and a game a different (thanks for that!).
I then explained I wasn’t comparing the products but the effect of not pre-ordering and my comparison was in relation to the price hike (or missing out).
You then doubled down that I was missing the point on the point I was making (not your point, your point was that my metaphor was wrong - your subsequent opinions on what Nintendo could do were/are irrelevant to your original reply to me).
So I am perfectly calm, you just keep missing my point. Exclaiming that I missed your point about what Nintendo could (and should do) does not mean that my metaphor is wrong - because your point, in relation to that, is irrelevant. It’s theory. My metaphor was based on the real world ‘what would happen’.
For what it’s worth I agree with YOUR point. Nintendo shouldn’t create this artificial scarcity. It’s anti-consumer.
BUT, that is irrelevant to my original comment and comparison.
@SteveT75 I’m missing the point? What are you on about? I was making the point.
I forget the original users name, but they stated “never pre-order”. I then made my comment and comparison. It doesn’t matter whether Nintendo could or should make more product available, the simple fact is they don’t and won’t.
Therefore, in that situation, we are left with two options. Pre-order and guarantee that we get the game/amiibo or, as the original commenter stated, don’t pre-order and pay scalper/re-seller prices (or just miss out completely).
So regardless of what else you think can be done, it doesn’t matter. I was commenting on the reality of the matter and the real-life results of no pre-ordering.
@SteveT75 well… if that was the point of the metaphor… you’ve missed the point.
I’m comparing a limited product and the process of pre-ordering rather than waiting until it’s out to buy it. That comparison holds. If you pre-order a game/concert ticket it will be cheaper than if you wait until the date it is out/day of concert. That comparison holds. There is a time an place where pre-ordering is definitely the best thing to do.
I mean… it isn’t reckless to speculate that development may have stopped when neither he, Platinum nor Nintendo have said anything of consequence in the last three and a half years. Nintendo literally just did this with BotW2. They explained it’s ‘aiming’ for a 2022 release, that the development has been strained, but then showed something to confirm that at least some progress is being made.
If all you do is tease people but show nothing and explain nothing then people will obviously make their own conclusions. This isn’t reckless, it’s just natural when there’s a lack of alternate information.
His actions, however, could be described as being reckless (the teasing… I appreciate the lack of news is probably a joint responsibility of Platinum and Nintendo).
@neolestat so my example is wrong because… it… is the same as buying concert tickets?
If you don’t pre-order them you’re going to pay over the odds. Whether it’s £10 or £100.
Additionally, my comment was in response to someone suggesting people shouldn’t pre-order. Even if the scalpers surcharge was the same as concerts tickets (£10 or so, I’m guessing?), it still doesn’t make sense to wait for it to go out of stock and then pay a re-seller a higher cost for a technically second hand product. Especially a reseller where the legitimacy of the transaction is somewhat dubious.
@Jaguar_Wong no need to worry, the game will be exactly the same (take that sarcasm!).
However, if you want the art book, the steel case and the cards to display, then my original point stands. They are collectors items and you’ll struggle to get them with out pre-ordering.
I plan to frame the cards in one frame, as I think the art is pretty cool and it will go well in my games room. Metroid is one of my favourite series, so this is a big deal to me.
Compare it to concert tickets. Surely you wouldn’t advise someone to not pre-book a concert and to just turn up on the day and hope for the best? (Only to find out it sold out weeks ago).
@Jaguar_Wong lol. You must be new to buying Nintendo products. I can almost guarantee that if you don’t pre-order the Special Edition (and definitely the Amiibo’s), your chances of getting them are almost nil.
@Trikeboy If Nintendo are THAT concerned about YouTube viewer numbers and the ad revenue then they must be in a lot of trouble. But they're not. They're just being out-dated and weird. And Twitch have now called them on it... good.
@Kang81 I agree that the prices are a bit inflated on Switch and on that aspect I also would rather not play games on Switch when I can play them elsewhere for cheaper (and normally with added features like a trophy system).
However, some of these games are not 'Apple Arcade' games. They just exist on the Apple Arcade service (just like games on Xbox Game Pass or PS+). Therefore you are seeing the price hike on games being ported from PC. An example is the 'Alba' game mentioned in the article. It is £13.49 on Steam but £16.74 on Switch. It's obviously 'free' as part of the subscription on Apple Arcade.
So, it's not really that I don't want them to be available on the eShop and it's more a case of why would someone who has access to other platforms (in this specific case, either a PC or an iPhone/iPad/Apple TV) choose to purchase them on Switch for more money and less features.
Doesn't this prove his point though? He doesn't play on Switch because it's 'easier' to play directly on a device connecting to the internet... therefore he isn't Switch player because, as he stated, he plays on his smartphone - of which Apple "holds the keys to a massive global audience".
Unless I'm missing something (entirely likely) his fumbling the Switch entirely proves the point he's making?
@shonenjump86 yeah, I agree. Reading too much into it seems futile. He just likes games. Watch any of the recent interviews about cross platform and integrated gaming and he’s not shy about talking about playing the other platforms.
@roz061 I think they’re referring to the fact that it didn’t release on VOD services like previous WB movies (some went on Amazon Prime and some went to Sky - this movie was expected to go on Amazon Prime and it was on on the 23rd that WB confirmed that they have no plans to release the movie in the UK at this time).
Which sucks. I totally planned to watch it on Friday. Now I have to go and sail the high seas since the only official comment from WB is that they aren’t releasing it in the UK.
@Yosher That’s actually a fair comment. I really don’t mind DLC and MTX, but as you stated when I’ve purchased it in the past it’s normally been well past launch (except for the odd occasion where I’ve bought season pass stuff at launch - but that’s normally for proven franchises that I know I’m a fan off and I’m going to want the extra content).
@Yosher something that may help you change your perspective (and ensure you don’t miss out on something that it sounds like you’d otherwise enjoy):
All games, ‘complete’, new, old, with DLC, GotY editions, whatever flavour they come in are essentially ‘cash grabs’. Someone, at some point, is looking to make money out of your enjoyment. They have no other interest in the industry or your business beyond making money.
Acknowledging this means it’s easier to accept that games are also a business as well as a hobby/past time and (certainly for me) allows you to push past any negative opinions you have on the matter and accept that as a business stuff like this simply needs to exist.
Someone else suggested voting with your wallet (and I assume not buying the game entirely). Realistically that doesn’t mean DLC won’t be produced, it just means those games won’t get made. The danger there is that plenty of people with less ‘interest’ in the gaming industry as a whole play games that are simple short attention filling games, filled with DLC or MTX (mobile games are an obvious example). It just means that the industry shifts that way and indie devs fill the void created by AA or AAA games that get cancelled. It leads to less variety.
My advice is to just buy games you think you’ll like. You don’t need to look at the DLC program that comes with it.

8/10 for BotW is wild, and on a Nintendo website.
Easily one of my favourite games ever, and I know that’s a very popular opinion.
I also thought Zelda Notes was pretty neat, especially for something that it completely optional and additive.

So regardless of what else you think can be done, it doesn’t matter. I was commenting on the reality of the matter and the real-life results of no pre-ordering.
Like I say, you missed MY point.
Re: Where To Pre-Order Metroid Dread Special Edition And Samus & EMMI amiibo
@SteveT75 well… if that was the point of the metaphor… you’ve missed the point.
I’m comparing a limited product and the process of pre-ordering rather than waiting until it’s out to buy it. That comparison holds. If you pre-order a game/concert ticket it will be cheaper than if you wait until the date it is out/day of concert. That comparison holds. There is a time an place where pre-ordering is definitely the best thing to do.
Re: Hideki Kamiya Shares Irritation At Speculation Over Bayonetta 3
Re: Where To Pre-Order Metroid Dread Special Edition And Samus & EMMI amiibo
Re: Where To Pre-Order Metroid Dread Special Edition And Samus & EMMI amiibo
Re: Where To Pre-Order Metroid Dread Special Edition And Samus & EMMI amiibo
@Jaguar_Wong lol. You must be new to buying Nintendo products. I can almost guarantee that if you don’t pre-order the Special Edition (and definitely the Amiibo’s), your chances of getting them are almost nil.
Re: Where To Pre-Order Metroid Dread Special Edition And Samus & EMMI amiibo
Glad to have helped those looking. I was also checking last night, but checked again this morning.
I’ll be on the lookout for those Amiibo as well. I love the Metroid Amiibo’s.
Re: Where To Pre-Order Metroid Dread Special Edition And Samus & EMMI amiibo (North America)
@Dazza the game and special edition are available on the Nintendo Store UK right now. I just pre-ordered my special edition.
Edit: standard game now also available at Amazon in the UK
Re: Nintendo Asks That You Don't Co-Stream The E3 2021 Nintendo Direct, Thanks Very Much
@Trikeboy If Nintendo are THAT concerned about YouTube viewer numbers and the ad revenue then they must be in a lot of trouble. But they're not. They're just being out-dated and weird. And Twitch have now called them on it... good.
Re: Talking Point: Do You Want To See More Apple Arcade Games On Switch?
Re: Super Bomberman R Online Makes The Leap From Stadia To Switch Next Week
@NoTimeForBS Tetris 99 isn’t free. It’s included with an NSO. It’s a slight but important distinction.
Think of this as being similar to Fortnite rather than something tied directly to NSO.
Re: "As You Can See, I'm Not A Switch Player" Admits Epic Games' Tim Sweeney
Doesn't this prove his point though? He doesn't play on Switch because it's 'easier' to play directly on a device connecting to the internet... therefore he isn't Switch player because, as he stated, he plays on his smartphone - of which Apple "holds the keys to a massive global audience".
Unless I'm missing something (entirely likely) his fumbling the Switch entirely proves the point he's making?
Re: Random: Head Of Xbox Phil Spencer Still Has That Nintendo Switch On His Shelf
@shonenjump86 yeah, I agree. Reading too much into it seems futile. He just likes games. Watch any of the recent interviews about cross platform and integrated gaming and he’s not shy about talking about playing the other platforms.
Re: Mortal Kombat Movie Comes Out Fighting With A $22.5m US Box Office Opening
@roz061 I think they’re referring to the fact that it didn’t release on VOD services like previous WB movies (some went on Amazon Prime and some went to Sky - this movie was expected to go on Amazon Prime and it was on on the 23rd that WB confirmed that they have no plans to release the movie in the UK at this time).
Which sucks. I totally planned to watch it on Friday. Now I have to go and sail the high seas since the only official comment from WB is that they aren’t releasing it in the UK.
Re: Capcom Will Broadcast Another Monster Hunter Digital Event Next Week
@Yosher That’s actually a fair comment. I really don’t mind DLC and MTX, but as you stated when I’ve purchased it in the past it’s normally been well past launch (except for the odd occasion where I’ve bought season pass stuff at launch - but that’s normally for proven franchises that I know I’m a fan off and I’m going to want the extra content).
Re: Capcom Will Broadcast Another Monster Hunter Digital Event Next Week
Just food for thought.
