@EOTW - As a reviewer that is getting paid to give readers an informed look at a game, it's important that they should experience what the product has to offer.
Why should I trust someone reviewing a movie that wasn't paying attention or left the theater early to get ahead of traffic?
I don't expect a reviewer to 100% every game, but this game is far from unplayable or broken. That's not even in question...but I would expect someone to get deep enough into the game to be able to give a developed opinion.
America likes to always think we're right...kind of like the big dumb guy who can get angry when poked...best to leave us think we're right and go back to spelling it colour when we leave.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE - Are you paid to camp on this site and be the first to type a negative, concern troll message on every topic?
You barely address the game or the review, and you have no questions, just generic anti-Wii U posts that contribute nothing but flame fodder and bait.
I actually bought this game, and I'm a little saddened that the review went so poorly. I suppose some of the things that the reviewer didn't like were things that I do like...
1) The game has a great sense of discovery. You never really know what you're going to encounter, and some things feel like well hidden secrets off the beaten path.
2) The combat complaints aren't that legitimate. Early on as you explore, enemies are tough but you get quests to go after each enemy in order of difficulty. If you power up your character, the first tower boss is a piece of cake, so your experience may vary. Fans of classic games like Rygar, Faxanadu, or Legacy of the Wizard will feel right at home here.
No, the footage you see on those screens is probably captured from dev kits, the Wii U or another source as a pre-recorded bit and mapped on later in most cases.
It's impractical for a number of reasons to show live gameplay when filming because screens have glare and other artifacts, may not sync well with various lighting set ups, and can be difficult to time for multiple takes.
I wish people like you would stop looking for reasons to undermine people's excitement, especially when your reasoning isn't sound.
You know what else? The "frame drops" I assume are when Link is hitting enemies and there is a momentary slo-mo effect.
I wish gaming and sites like this were free of people like you that have poor intentions and spread misinformation.
More people should call out your dishonest agenda.
Microsoft and Nintendo have always gotten along relatively well and have been very civil toward one another.
Microsoft and Sony are another matter. If the dreaded day came that Nintendo went third party, I feel Microsoft would dangle some money in front of them for console exclusivity and use that to break into the Japanese gaming market just to piss off Sony.
Obviously Wii U is the only console with backwards compatibility, and the Wii is a cheap console that's still readily available and sits in a number of households already.
So...you can play it on your Wii U, or in the old Wii you put in the kid's room. Also, it's not like the target demographic cares about the SD or HD graphics.
Well you managed to find something barely relevant to complain about. I don't think the "selects" branding is bad at all. I don't think it's awesome or amazing, but it's a fine branding.
I have the Windwaker Selects for Wii U and the Punch Out selects for Wii , and they look just fine.
More importantly, I love that this innovative developer is supporting Wii U. I really enjoyed Steamworld Dig, and I'll be checking Heist out as well.
@impurekind : Here is why all your analogies are wrong, with a much better one:
It's like if Showtime had an app on their website that let you watch premium content from HBO, just as long as you were the one linking to the content from a number of hacked streams.
Your gun analogy is stupid, because you would have to make a gun that works by stealing your neighbors bullets or some such silliness.
No, this is an app designed for piracy. You may be in favor of piracy or against it, but that's the primary function here. Microsoft has probably decided it wanted nothing to do with an app that could lead to legal issues.
Now the rabid "hate everything slightly different" zealots have moved on to the anime?
The style is reminiscent of Osamu Tezuka, which is actually an incredibly retro style, and the animation looks a little better than a typical kids anime.
I think this is the really dumbed down, close-minded western fans who know nothing and appreciate nothing artistic whining about something being slightly different and knee-jerk hating.
This whole article is shameless click bait and the usual trolls are waiting to post on the top of the comments as always. Nintendolife has really gone downhill.
They had those obnoxious commercials and used him in a lot of their marketing materials. I was alive back then, and I had a Playstation. The Crash games were terrible as well.
Two Tribes made a decision to focus on publishing and managing their assets rather than be a more active developer. I remember the story from a while back.
It's funny, Alex Jones and other conspiracy nuts have been saying similar things.
The sad part is that they've chosen to go after this game, rather than the thousands of other apps and services that do very similar things, or the very nature of cell phones themselves...
But hey...Oliver Stone and Alex Jones NEED a cell phone to operate as businessmen in this day and age...so let's pick on an app that they have no interest in. (these guys are not of the generation that feels any nostalgia for gaming)
I'm not defending Pokemon Go or casting cell phones as evil surveillance devices, just putting things in perspective.
You assume Nintendo is leaving devlopers "in the dark" and you assume Two Tribes is being totally forthright and honest in an interview where they have to spin away why they are skipping a platform they said they were aiming for.
Does that mean I'm right, or you're wrong?
No...it means we're making a lot of assumptions here, and those assumptions tend to fit our biases more often than not, hmm?
Johnny Turbo may be dumb, but there is this misguided earnestness to what it is... and they had a comic at least.
Crash Bandicoot is the result of cynical corporate suits trying to copy the formula of mascots like Mario, Sonic, and Megaman, and then add superficial "attitude" and sunglasses like Poochie from that classic Simpsons episode.
Everything about Crash is stolen almost directly from Sonic, and what's left is an ugly, poorly designed, shallow mascot that should have died in the mid-90s with it's fellow horde of ill-conceived mascots, but it survived due to Sony's sheer market muscle and nostalgia.
@Smash_kirby - Yes but this is gaming in 2016, and we all know Nintendo is always wrong, and Sony is always right even when they engage in the same practices.
Sometimes I wish these guys would just come out and say it's expensive and difficult to port it, and they don't feel like it's a sure profit maker on Wii U at the end of the day.
The most amazing thing about this game is how it still holds up today. If this were released as an "indie" game with "retro" pixel art, I think people would be very pleased with it.
Of course we would want more than four stages these days, but in 1981 that was really novel.
Looking at the libraries for the PS4 and XB1, I can safely say there is nothing there that makes me want to run out and buy either console. Even most of the big third party games that people would cite are available on PC, and I STILL don't want them.
Sure, there are a few, but there are more games on Wii U that I enjoy playing and will probably continue to enjoy playing after the Wii U is replaced.
I guess you're all hyped up for the next Call of Duty? Assassin's Creed? Elder Scrolls? Madden/Fifa? Uncharted?
I don't have anything against you if you do, but those games honestly hold no interest for me, they are boring and joyless to me.
@Dave24 But but but...we still don't know what the NX is going to be.
Also, how long do you expect them to continue to support a platform that has underperformed for going on four years now?
The problem with people like you, is that no matter what occurs, you will find a way to spin everything into some betrayal or broken promise on Nintendo's part. Then when it is revealed that you were wrong, you'll just move on to the next phony concern issue.
PS: What exactly constitutes the NX being a replacement for the Wii U or not?
... Having a dual screen or gamepad controller? - I'm sure you'd explode with negativity and contempt if that were true. So what criteria must be met for the NX to be a "replacement" and what criteria must be met for you to consider it not to be?
I don't know if that's a widely accepted term, but even though this release may have some issues, it's nice to see smaller publishers putting out smaller budget physical releases again.
Maybe people are just fatigued from the Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, etc... sequels offering little innovation or variety for all their marketing, but at the start of this gen it looked like everyone that wasn't the size of Activision, Ubisoft, or EA was going away.
I hope this trend continues. I tend to stay away from the over-hyped, overly generic, big budget, fodder from the big western devs. It's one of the reasons I like Nintendo and their unique approach to console gaming.
Hmm, perhaps it is time to realize - Nintendo is not now, nor were they ever - the company you seem to think they are or demand they be.
When I read your posts, I don't automatically dismiss you as a fanboy, hater, or troll, (though one easily could) but a misguided crusader who is fighting for an ancient cause he has read about, only never to realize that it was a fictional story all along.
Always have to roll my eyes at the people trying to make this a failure on Nintendo's part.
Uhm, you do remember what a colossal mess this entire endeavor has been from day one?
Clearly this is Inafune and his team being in way over their heads. Just compare Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze at a rock solid 60fps to this poor port.
I like the stream, the girls (and the guy offscreen) have such good energy. You can always tell when people are really invested and when they're just pushing out dry PR.
I notice these devs don't mind taking money from people who really want these games on Wii U, they just decide one day that they won't bother to port it, sucks to be (Wii) U.
Crash Bandicoot is still an ugly abomination callously created to copy Sonic and other mascots of that era. (even Dr. Vortex was a crass rip off of Dr. Robotnik)
You can tell he was pieced together by a board room full of accountants and marketing people who only vaguely understood 90's youth culture.
Can we all stop pretending any affection we may feel toward Crash Bandicoot is misplaced nostalgia?
@IceClimbers - The Division is Ubisoft chasing Activision and EA by slapping their Tom Clancy license on a generic multiplayer FPS-MMO to cash in on Destiny and Battlefield audiences.
The hype was off the charts, and it looks good in screenshots, but it's not the vast open post apocalyptic NYC they promised, and the gameplay was poorly balanced, repetitive, and uninspired.
I clearly state that you should find a couple (not one) of trusted reviewers and READ the reviews.
The problem with Metacritic is the same problem with the 1080p fetishists who got games that ran at terrible framerates with low quality lighting because they whined about some number on the internets.
Now, everytime a game starts getting reviews, people start treating metacritic like it's gospel and that the entire game can be summed up in one easy number.
I can think of several games that get hyped and achieve high metacritic scores that I don't like, and several that got mediocre scores that I loved.
Example: On PC I own the Witcher 2 and Two Worlds 2.
According to Metacritic, Two Worlds 2 gets a 76 and The Witcher 2 got an 88...now I loved Two Worlds 2, and found it to be an under-rated gem, while I got bored and found The Witcher 2 to be everything I hate about modern western "RPGs" rolled into one package complete with awkwardly gratuitous sex scenes and nerd empowerment.
Now finally...my BIGGEST problem with metacritic, is how people use it like a bludgeon when it reinforces their pre-conceived notions and agenda.
Oh my god, I hate metacritic, and metacritic evangelists...
I get why people put a lot of stock in it, but again, we're going back to judging a game based on raw number aggregate.
Metacritic can be a nice visual guide or a snapshot of a general overall feel, but it's not the same as reading a review.
For example...a lot of modern AAA games get great reviews based on criteria I don't care about.
It's best to find reviewers and sites that give thorough reviews with reasons and descriptions that you trust, and then base your purchasing on the reviews, not some abstract aggregate number.
NintendoLife are one of the most fair and thorough reviewers of games, and they frequently give low scores when deserved.
Clearly you are here posting out of ignorance with an agenda. If you don't like the number, why not READ THE REVIEW. It's quite detailed and covers the positives and negatives and explains why the score was given.
Your final comment randomly bashing Nintendo sale prices just further confirms your troll status.
@electrolite77 - Well, as long as you decide what is innovation for innovation sake without inserting personal bias, I suppose there is a point to be made.
I also agree that the original Gameboy holds more of a nostalgic feeling over my smaller, lighter, better screen bearing Gameboy Color, but there was just something about the look and feel of it.
Still, I feel the problem is that our online shared gaming community and media has become so bitter and cynical regarding innovation due to the fanboyism and console war mentality.
Think about this: The Playstation 4 is lauded as the greatest console and worshiped for technically NOT having any unique features and being the most like a stripped down PC with proprietary software and multimedia features.
Now, there is nothing wrong with that, but we've reached a point where the echelon of popular design is to lack any identity...and that's not good.
The Wii U and XBONE were ridiculed and suffered in sales for including unique controllers and accessories, despite having generally better received software then the PS4...and that's troubling to me.
Nintendo Life just crushes the bigger sites like IGN by constantly throwing new Nintendo content and reviews at us while the big sites only touch the biggest games and click bait topics late and with uninterested writers.
I was looking at this in the E-shop and this may push me to buy it. Even with Starfox Zero on the horizon, it should be a nice relaxed experience between dogfights and barrel rolls.
@electrolite77 - I hate to admit it, but I'm old enough to remember ROB as a kid. I didn't own the ROB and zapper set, but I played games with it at friend's houses, and I found Gyromite to be a lot of fun at the time.
I passed on the Wii Balance board, but no matter because millions bought it and used it.
Know what else I bought?
A Playstation. Eventually I grew bored of my Playstation as a daily-use console, as I had every other console and piece of gaming hardware I've ever bought.
So I mean, doesn't all this stuff have a limited lifespan really? I wish I still had my blurry, spinach colored screen gameboy, but my (more less gimmicky) Game Boy Color still works, but eventually I got a GBA SP...with a gimmicky clamshell design that is still used in the 3DS with it's 3D gimmick that I actually really like.
So I guess my point is: Sorry...this stuff we play with is fun, but nothing lasts forever and I'm okay with that.
I think the reason a gender-selectable character bothers me so little here, is that Link doesn't have a defined character in terms of speech or mannerisms...he is defined by his heroic actions and adventures (which is fine for a video game!).
Also, the Legend of Zelda series has a messed up time-line with multiple heroes donning the outfit and wielding the Master Sword over many ages.
Now, this doesn't work with a character like Bayonetta or Serious Sam who are defined by their quirks and dialogue...but it doesn't bother me at all for a silent protagonist.
@Kisame83 - The thing is: The Wii U is a dual screen system with really refined gyroscopic controls for better or worse.
The way the Wii U broadcasts to the second screen actually is pretty innovative, but it fails to impress in the post-tablet era.
Critics have been attacking Nintendo for not really utilizing the hardware of the Wii U, demanding they "justify" it, and calling any game that doesn't use the hardware features extensively a "missed opportunity".
Then, those same critics turn around and bash Nintendo any time they include uses of the second screen or gyroscopic controls. Some of them have even begrudgingly admitted that games like Splatoon and Super Mario Maker have been successful in using the hardware after lots of initial hand-wringing.
One final thought: I'm so sick of the term "gimmick" and how it's tossed around. It's become an innovation killer in our dialogue about video games... anyone who wants to try and innovate must fear the gaming media and community labeling what they do a "gimmick" and all the negative baggage that implies.
Then we wonder why mainstream gaming has gotten so stale (but I don't.)...

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
@VanillaLake
You have created a false choice.
Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
@Ralizah Uhm, no I'm calling him a troll because of his entire post.
Now you are being a troll by dishonestly representing what I said.
Also: Ouch?
Why won't you be getting this, because it got an 8/10?
I don't get it.
Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
Oh my god, I hate metacritic, and metacritic evangelists...
I get why people put a lot of stock in it, but again, we're going back to judging a game based on raw number aggregate.
Metacritic can be a nice visual guide or a snapshot of a general overall feel, but it's not the same as reading a review.
For example...a lot of modern AAA games get great reviews based on criteria I don't care about.
It's best to find reviewers and sites that give thorough reviews with reasons and descriptions that you trust, and then base your purchasing on the reviews, not some abstract aggregate number.
Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
@MisterMan -TROLL
Re: Talking Point: The Great Star Fox Zero Controls Debate Highlights Important Lessons
Just wanted to add:
A game co-developed by Platinum games with a control scheme that requires practice and a learning curve that upsets some critics?
Say it aint so!
Re: Nintendo Download: 14th April (North America)
People whine about the Wii U releases every week no matter what gets released.
Re: Talking Point: The Great Star Fox Zero Controls Debate Highlights Important Lessons
Think about this:
The Playstation 4 is lauded as the greatest console and worshiped for technically NOT having any unique features and being the most like a stripped down PC with proprietary software and multimedia features.
Re: Review: Asdivine Hearts (Wii U eShop)
Thanks for the timely review.
Re: Talking Point: The Great Star Fox Zero Controls Debate Highlights Important Lessons
I'm eager to see what VR will bring now.
Re: Preview: Star Fox Guard Just May Be the Scariest Game of 2016
At first I was having trouble telling exactly what was going on and orienting myself.
Then after a few minutes of watching you play it clicked and I wanted to try it for myself. This looks like a cross between:
A standard tower defense
Five Nights at Freddy's
Link's Crossbow training.
I'm definitely gonna have fun with this.
Re: Rumour: More Claims Made For New Legend of Zelda on Wii U and NX, Gender Choice For Playable Character
Re: Talking Point: The Great Star Fox Zero Controls Debate Highlights Important Lessons
