In the steadily decreasing list of enticing titles still coming to the Wii U and its eShop, RIVE was among the most anticipated in the download scene. The final game from Two Tribes, it made a favourable impression as one of the demos in the E3 2015 'Nindies@Home' promotion, and we rather enjoyed playing it during an extended hands on session during EGX in the same year.
Having been confirmed during the Spring for a September release on Wii U, PC, PS4 and Xbox One, there's now some disappointing news for Nintendo fans. Two Tribes has confirmed to us that the Wii U version of RIVE won't be hitting that window, and at this moment of time doesn't have a fixed date. Two Tribes is keen to bring the game to Nintendo hardware and it may transition to NX - depending on what the next-gen system actually is - as the studio wants to ensure that the experience reaches its standards of 60fps performance, a benchmark vital to shooters and bullet-hell titles of this nature.
Two Tribes co-founder Collin van Ginkel has explained the current status in some detail to us, which you can see below.
First of all, can you talk us through the reasons and thoughts behind RIVE being delayed for Wii U, or perhaps being moved to NX instead?
It's very important to us that Nintendo users will get a great version of RIVE, but unfortunately we don't know at this point when or how we'll be able to deliver this. There are two main reasons for this, one technical and one business related.
The Nindies demo in 2015 was specifically optimized to perform well in hand-picked levels and didn't manage 60FPS consistently. We've added a lot of stuff since then and we haven't been able to reach the performance level required yet. We won't release RIVE unless it's a solid 60FPS, and if that means delaying it to a future platform, we will make that call and make sure Nintendo fans get the perfect experience.
The market has also changed. The game was supposed to ship over a year and a half ago, and things are a lot different now. Nintendo is exiting the Wii U market early in favor of the NX which means a long tail in sales is not looking likely. So that is the business part; do you release a game on a platform in its last days or on a new one that's better suited and can reach gamers for years to come?
We won't release RIVE unless it's a solid 60FPS, and if that means delaying it to a future platform, we will make that call and make sure Nintendo fans get the perfect experience.
How long do you think it'll be before RIVE arrives on Nintendo hardware?
At the moment I can't easily answer that. We're going to try one last time to perfect the Wii U version, but if that fails we'll need to focus on the future.
In terms of the prospect of moving the release to NX, what will the key factors be in making that decision?
To be honest, we know very little about Nintendo's next platform, so it's difficult to make solid plans for that. If Nintendo announces more details we might be able to give you a better answer.
In more general terms with other platforms, how is RIVE's development progressing? Is it close to finished?
It's very close! We're putting in translations now, we have full voice-over and some really cool extra game modes included. It's really coming together well, I couldn't be happier about the quality!
How has the reaction been among play testers and fans awaiting the release? Is there a lot of anticipation for its arrival?
It's a bit scary actually, since we have almost exclusively had enormously positive feedback from testers and show floor dwellers. I'm hoping it's not just people trying to please us, so the real test will be when the reviews come in when it's released this September. Fingers crossed!
In avoiding cancellation (at this stage) of the Wii U release, and suggesting the NX alternative as a possibility, does that reflect a particular desire to still share your games with a Nintendo audience in particular?
Totally! We've made games for Nintendo platforms since 2001 and we'd hate for RIVE not to be in Nintendo gamers' hands in some way. It pains us to have to bring this news, but we just can't release a game that's not perfectly playable. We've seen other shoot 'em ups deliver less than stellar framerates recently and it just kills the experience completely.
Are you concerned the delay could cost you many sales from Nintendo gamers, or are you confident that most will wait and still pick it up later on?
We've made games for Nintendo platforms since 2001 and we'd hate for RIVE not to be in Nintendo gamers' hands in some way. It pains us to have to bring this news, but we just can't release a game that's not perfectly playable.
We understand that people will be disappointed, and rightfully so. Hopefully they'll understand where we're coming from and pick it up when it releases in full 60FPS glory, whenever we manage to reach that point on Nintendo hardware.
Is RIVE still the last game that'll be developed by Two Tribes, or could you still change your mind?
It's still the final game. We're putting everything we have into this game. It really is the product of 16 years of experience and a great way to say goodbye.
Do you have a final message for your Nintendo fans?
Sorry to disappoint you guys, we know you've been waiting a long time for it. It's never easy to bring bad news, but I hope you understand a later but better RIVE is preferable to an earlier sub-par RIVE.
We'd like to thank Collin van Ginkel for his time.

Good thing this wasn't funded or we would have a bunch of complaining as usual.
"A better RIVE is better than a subpar RIVE"
Which is all fine and dandy when it comes to delays, but switching from one console to the other is always a back-stab no matter how you sugar-coat it. Does anyone remember "Super Paper Mario Bros." for the GameCube?
It would be a shame to see it moved to NX but I've faith in these guys. This is their last game too before disbanding.
🤔😞☹️
Sounds like excuses.
Sometimes I wish these guys would just come out and say it's expensive and difficult to port it, and they don't feel like it's a sure profit maker on Wii U at the end of the day.
This doesn't really surprise me. The nindies demo of RIVE was really fun and impressive, but it did stutter. And to hear that the nindies demo specifically chose sections that were less technically demanding clearly underscores the need to skip the sad little WiiU. Fingers crossed for an NX port.
@Spoony_Tech What, you don't think a game that we were told is coming out on a system 1 1/2 yeas ago may not come out at all isn't worthy of complaining? Seems complaint worthy to me. Whining even.
But I'm more focused on this part -
"In terms of the prospect of moving the release to NX, what will the key factors be in making that decision?"
"To be honest, we know very little about Nintendo's next platform, so it's difficult to make solid plans for that."
While some people were focused on NX not being at E3 b/c it wouldn't have enough time to be promoted otherwise, I was concerned that no NX at E3 meant developers wouldn't know enough about it to make games for it. How do you make a game for a system you don't know anything about.
The longer Nintendo keeps NX squirreled away in it's secret cave on the mountaintop the longer it will take to get 3rd party support for it.
Looks like the NX launch lineup is getting better every day.
I am a developer and I called this BS. The Wii U, PC and PS4 versions are developed by Two Tribes themselves. The game is develop for two years. How you cannot run rive on the Wii U? You guys were focus on the Wii U version. They are lying folks. My game I am making look better than Rive.
And there goes my most anticipated Wii U game. Sigh. Haven't heard anything on Android Assault Cactus for a while either. Glad they're both headed to PS4 etc.
@rjejr exactly. Two Tribes, of ALL developers, being left in the dark STILL to this day on what NX will be is the most concerning piece of info in the whole article.
I don't have high hopes for NX at this point. Too many unknowns and the fact that next to nothing is out about it when it's supposedly dropping in March can't bode well.
Also, I can't think of any home console that has released in March of a given year that was successful.
@therealgamer Ok lol. Two things here.
1) You're lying. You are not a developer and your "game" (which does not exist, mind you) does not "look better" than Rive.
2) It's simple, the Wii U is underpowered and cannot run Rive to the developer's expectations. This is only like the 56th time this gen we've heard something similar to this regarding Wii U. It's kind of like that habitually single person into their late 30s complaining about all their ex-partners; at some point it's you, not them.
Any way, silly post all around from you.
@gatorboi352 " Wii U is underpowered and cannot run Rive to the developer's expectations". LOL So an indie game rive cannot run the developer's expectations" LoL. Its not the wii u its the devs. The wii u is more powerful than the last gen consoles. The wii u is not underpower. I have the wii u SDK and the GPU is amazing
@therealgamer http://i.imgur.com/seh6p.gif
Frankly, at this point it doesn't make much sense to release anything on Wii U.
@gatorboi352 @rjejr
You are assuming a lot of things.
You assume Nintendo is leaving devlopers "in the dark" and you assume Two Tribes is being totally forthright and honest in an interview where they have to spin away why they are skipping a platform they said they were aiming for.
Does that mean I'm right, or you're wrong?
No...it means we're making a lot of assumptions here, and those assumptions tend to fit our biases more often than not, hmm?
@gatorboi352 "Also, I can't think of any home console that has released in March of a given year that was successful."
The only console I can even think of that launched in March was 3DS, which didn't sell well until the holiday, when videogame hardware sells well b/c that's when the games come out, and everything is always on sale Black Friday. (Though maybe the PS2 slim was March, but that's not "new" to me, just a redesign.) I can't imagine new hardware selling well in March unless it's $199, and maybe not even then. Nintendo always talks about learning from their mistakes but I've never actually seen them do that. Yeah Pokemon Go is big, but it isn't even them, their "mobile" app was Miitomo. I do like the NES Mini for $59.99, but I see that less as learning from their own mistakes and more of them learning from bootleg Chinese manufacturers. But it's still a good first step.
It's hard to guess how NX will do when I exhaust myself guessing what it might be.
Oh, I may owe you a reply from last week, I try to avoid this stuff over the weekend and I have a lot of email to go thru this morning.
@Action51 When somebody says - "We don't know what it is" - I'm not assuming anything, I'm taking someone at their word. I don't do that w/ Reggie, but other people I try to give the benefit of the doubt.
@Action51 Ok, fine.
But let's be honest here. We have a bevy of historical info to base these assumptions on. This info is two fold:
1) Developers left and right, every single generation, have detailed largely what Two Tribes is detailing here in that Nintendo is not very forth coming with info and is at times difficult to get access/permission/general information out of. This is not an isolated claim by Two Tribes
2) Two Tribes has been on of the biggest Nintendo indie devs this past generation and has had a great relationship with them.
@RCMADIAX Yeah I'll give ya that one. However, it was Japan and it was the friggin PS2 LOL. The best selling console of all time, right?
@A01 problem for Nintendo is, far too often this has been the case with Wii U and developers struggling with it. Again, like I said a few posts up, eventually "it's you, not them" kind of deal.
I can't see the point in them thinking about Bringing out on NX if they can't get Wii u up and running. If it's out this September and NX is not out till March it will 6 months to late and will not sell.If that's the case they will blame Nintendo fans.
So we can forget about a Wii u version, sadly. Hopefully we see it on NX then!
This news sucks - Rive was one of my most wanted games left for Wii U. That said, nothing said here is surprising.
Performance issues were a concern since the demo, and from a business perspective it's more appealing to be an early success on a new console rather than a swansong on a dying console with a small install base.
Two Tribes have done a great job supporting Nintendo consoles, and have obviously made their best effort to make this game work. I hold no ill will towards them even if this news is disappointing. Still looking forward to seeing this game in action eventually.
@gatorboi352 @rjejr Two Tribes is folding. I don't know if I'd be rushing to get a dev unit to them for a single game unless there was some big following or popularity of that game. I think RIVE looks and plays great and I can't wait, but that doesn't change the fact that they should be one of the last devs to get a kit.
By the time NX gets it the hype will have died and it will be perceived as a hand me down .
@aaronsullivan - Yup.
Two Tribes made a decision to focus on publishing and managing their assets rather than be a more active developer. I remember the story from a while back.
@RCMADIAX Thank You RCMADIAX. The Wii U is not underpowered. Its all depends the skill level and what engine you use.
Lot of people seem to be rushing to assumptions here. I have faith in Two Tribes that they will be able to make the Wii U version of RIVE to the best of their ability. I wouldn't mind an NX port since it would mean a more fleshed out launched lineup for NX.
@Gatorboi352 I don't think you realize when it comes to new consoles there is a certain pecking order in which developers get development kits first. We have already heard plenty of rumors that majors publishers like Square Enix, Activision and EA have development kits already. Sonic Team likely has development kits as well which can explain why Project Sonic 2017 has been confirmed for NX while Sonic Mania has not.
@RCMADIAX Pretty good insight. You pretty much nailed it when you said it all comes down to the tools and engine you are using. I remember hearing about how DICE claimed Frostbite 3 wouldn't work on Wii U when they basically just tested a shoehorned version of Frostbite 2. You cant expect good results if you just shoehorn in an engine without the right optrimization. Also I will not be surprised if smaller indie developers start receiving NX development kits once the NX is officially revealed.
I hope it gets released on the WiiU because I am not buying the NX until it is well into its life cycle.
Hey TwoTribes, if the WiiU version can't be done, I'm counting on you for an NX versione! Don't disappoint me, as it's the game I'm wating for the most. BTW, if the NX is also a portable machine it would be great for RIVE!
@aaronsullivan Good point. But I feel like right now in July 2016 we know of more developers who don't have a dev kit than do, and that's a problem for me. Andmaybe Iwoudln't worry if I flet like the devs knew what NX was - a PS4/X1 clone, a 3DS succssor, a hybrid, a Wii U 2 w/ portable Gamepad - but since we dont knwo, I assume they dont' know, and i fthey don't know, who's going to make games for a system they don't know anything about?
So maybe you're right, Two Tribes was a bad example, but my sentiment stands, system supposedly launches in 8 months and there isn't enough info out there about what that system is.
I'll be getting it on PS4 anyway (finally got one of those) so I'm not too iffed, but it's good that they know that people will be pissed even though they really wish to give Nintendo fans the best version of the game as possible. Hopefully, even if NX matches the XBone in power, that Nintendo makes developing for the NX easy and cheap enough for multi-platform developers so they won't feel pressured or forced to abandon it.
With a 12.6 million install base on Wii U, this does not make sense. NX will probably sell 2 million the first year.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets You and a bunch of other 12.6 million Wii U owners out there.
This is a disgraceful way to treat the fans who supported the launch, and an embarrassment to these developers. I think we heard from them too soon, before the game was even a reality. And now their optimized tech demo was a simple case of bait and switch. Which only hurts their case because it was a chance for them to be upfront with the game's technical failings.
I wouldn't continue to support this company frankly, how does this qualify as a final effort and their magnum opus? Which they now relegate it to some NX vaporware status.
@RCMADIAX "What does this have to do with RIVE you may ask? Basically we don't know what engine the developers are using or how optimized it may be for the Wii U. "
That last part is key and central to my point, albeit relayed in a terrible way by myself.
The fact is, far too often this gen, developers (of all kinds) have had issues with the Wii U build of their games in comparison to their other builds. While it may not be a "power" issue in all cases, it is most definitely a Nintendo issue. They chose to go with the outdated hardware that was also very convoluted.
@gatorboi352 Are you actually being serious right now? Yeah dude, the NX is going to be a failure because Nintendo (allegedly) hasn't informed Two Tribes, a diminutive and insignificant indie developer that announced like two years ago that they're going out of business after their next game, what the system will be like. "Hey guys, we know you're not going to exist as a developer by the time our next console comes out, but we really want to tell you about our super secret console that's releasing after you go out of business!" And again, why are you on a site about Nintendo if you hate Nintendo as much as all your comments suggest you do?
Your skipping Wii U? Alright, put it ob the PS4 , PUT IT ON THE PS4!!!!!!!
50 000 USER INSTAL
Nintendo's for goofs
Nintendo destroy's their own console nobody's buying an nx.
Don't be stupid, put it on PS4 or maby nobody will buy it unless you bring then bragging rights.
Actually sell your company and start developing software for oil riggs and Air planes. Gaming is dieing.
@rjejr We already know that some of the bigger devs have EARLY DEV kits, Square Enix, Bandai, Ubisoft. It is quite reasonable that Nintendo are sending out these kits in priority order.
Also, we also know that any dev. that does have access to NX will have signed a very strict NDA. For all we know Two Tribes may well have a kit, or certainly know some of the specs alteady, but are unable to comment at the moment.
I would rather wait a bit longer for what I would hope, will be the definitive edition, than a version that is locked at 30FPS, which is bad for a shoot-em-up, or a version which has chaotic FPS.
Yeah yeah yeah give the Nintendo fans what they deserve bla bla bla
@rjejr PS4 was revealed 9 months before launch, and the Xbox One 6 months before launch. In PS4's case, if the Vita hadn't already launched, nobody would've known what an "Orbis" is. Timeframe isn't an issue.
The more important developers have dev kits - Square Enix, Sega, Ubisoft, Bandai Namco, etc. That's what matters most.
"its standards of 60fps performance, a benchmark vital to shooters and bullet-hell titles of this nature."
That's a nice sentiment, but let's be honest here, there are plenty of great shooters that slow down more than just a notch when the bullet hell gets too frenetic. As a gamer, I would not demand that level of perfection.
And [likely] another one bites the dust.
@rjejr
Well, there's no doubt I want to know more, but responsible companies shouldn't divulge what they know. Leaks may have been happening but they are obfuscated by the unsubstantiated rumors.
If you want an optimistic take: The original target was Holiday 2016, so ~4 extra months for all developers that got early kits.
Also, as much as I want to dream about things after Nintendo makes a big reveal... it's not coming until after holiday 2016, so if it is shown any time in 2016 I will have plenty of time for that. But, yeah, I'd like Nintendo to spill it this week.
I really hope they stick with Wii U. I am not going to NX after a lifetime with Nintendo. RIVE was/is my most anticipated game and has been for a long time. I won't follow it to another system though.
Two Tribes are smart and efficient if anyone can get this worked out, it is them. And please do.
@aaronsullivan "The original target was Holiday 2016"
Well unless Nintendo always planned on March 2017 so NES Mini could have holiday 2016 all to itself? OK, even I can't buy that, NX was probably holiday 2016, NES Mini March, and they swapped them when NX got delayed.
Now about that $299 Wii U price...
https://www.engadget.com/2016/07/24/original-xbox-one-drops-to-249/
@msvt and others
I'm guessing I'll be giving NX a try day one so I'm personally okay with it going to NX, however I'm really pulling for it to have a Wii U release. If it comes out early enough I'd probably buy it for Wii U.
The sad part is that it will be a bit old news in the grander scheme as presumably PC and PS4 will have it earlier — oh, I might do PC. :/
@Action51 Huh? That's almost exactly what they said in the interview? Sure, it requires a little bit of reading between the lines, but they're not exactly trying to hide it.
@IceClimbers "Square Enix, Sega, Ubisoft, Bandai Namc"
Well it only mater if they put out games on NX, having a dev kit I don't think guarantees games. How many Wii U games have those 4 companies put out on Wii U in 4 years, 4 total? 5? 6? How many NX games will those 4 dev kits produce?
Dammit I was looking forward to Rive, still I have an xbox1 so I will have to get it on that.
@Captain_Gonru "unanswered questions"
Maybe if X-Files comes back yet again they can have an NX episode and try to divulge it's secrets. What's Geraldo up to these days? Maybe the NX is being kept hidden in Al Capone's vault?
@rjejr I can't defend Nintendo on that one. I think your production theory is right. I think these things are still on warehouse shelves from the original manufacturing. They don't want to sell more than 800,000 because that's all they have left and they don't want to have to fire up another plant. I want to say I'm exaggerating. I want to. Thing should be $150 with a game by now. Wouldn't that increase game sales? Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, SSB, Mario would be purchased by a large portion of new console owners. Seems like no brainer. I want an apology and detailed explanation of why it hasn't been lowered previously when they finally do lower the price. Are they waiting until March to pull attention away from NX?
That's ashame hopefully they can do if not then the NX is it x
Make it good. If that means nx, go nx. Forget the haters, they weren't enough when they were fans.
While I am a Wii U owner and was really looking forward to playing this on it (loved the demo), I'm excited it is coming to the NX. I imagine it can only benefit the developers and Nintendo alike. And the players from what the developers are saying in the interview.
@AlexSora89 Two Tribes don't own Wii U owners RIVE because it wasn't crowdfunded
I sure hope it doesn't switch over. I wanna play this game as soon as possible, and I'm not getting an NX, right away.
Two Tribes, don't worry I'll still buy this on PS4. I think at this point a lot of Nintendo fans like myself own a WiiU and PS4.
@rjejr Just as devs or does publishing count too? I'll just put both. Developer (Publisher/Western release):
Square Enix: 4 (5/1)
Sega: 3 (6/4)
Ubisoft: 18 (20/19)
Bandai Namco: 9 (12/4)
Total: 34 (43/28)
Those four released quite a bit more than 4 or 5 total but we didn't see most of it anyway so...ehh.
@rjejr Well, there's at least 4 already with Just Dance 2017, Sonic 2017, and the two Dragon Quest games (one of which is on Wii U!). Namco Bandai is supposedly working on at least 5 games, including a Smash port (remember, they made Smash 4).
@-DEMISE- He is one of the most pessimistic people round here along with Kirk and Poketune
@-DEMISE- yeah that's exactly what I said.... Except not.
Two Tribes is just the latest in a long line of 3rd parties big and small being left largely in the dark on a system that drops less than a year from now.
Back to your NDF cave you go.
@gatorboi352 We know Ubisoft, Sega and Square have a dev kit. If they have one, it's safe to assume companies like EA, Activison, Koei-Tecmo etc do as well. I think the big companies know exactly what it is, but they aren't going to give any details until Nintendo does.
@Wolfgabe I know. I don't get some of these people.
@gatorboi352 Ummmmmmm yeah. That is what you said. Here, I'll quote you since you apparently forgot what you said: "Two Tribes, of ALL developers, being left in the dark STILL to this day on what NX will be is the most concerning piece of info in the whole article. I don't have high hopes for NX at this point. Too many unknowns and the fact that next to nothing is out about it when it's supposedly dropping in March can't bode well."
So you're essentially saying that you don't expect NX to be good/sell well, and you cite a (basically) defunct indie developer's supposed lack of inside knowledge of NX as evidence for your opinion. Sooo back you go to the white trash meth den that is the playstation site that accidentally led you here.
Oh another thing, how is this an exclusive article?
Don't all the fans of Nintendo everywhere deserve to know this basic news regarding the launch of a new title?
@OptometristLime Maybe it was posted here first, but it isn't exclusive. I saw it on a different Nintendo site first.
@aaronsullivan "Are they waiting until March to pull attention away from NX? "
I think they'll announce a Wii U price cut when they unveil NX so they can clear out whatever is left over the holidays. Of course when they announce NX Wii U isn't getting a price cut as much as a clearance sticker placed on it, probably $199. They may be keeping it at $299 now so $199 looks like an impulse purchase then. Like when people go into a store to pick up a NES Mini they'll get a $199 Wii U b/c it's not $299 anymore. If they did interim price cuts to $279 and $229 then the $199 wouldn't look as robust.
I'm not sure anymore if I'm mocking myself or being serious, but $199 in Sept seems likely to clear out the remaining 800k and make room for NX. Well unless they make room for NES Mini first. Do you think NES Mini will be in the Ntineod aisle or in the toy aisle next to the Sega Gear stuff? TRU has an aisle full of that stuff, and drug stores seem to like them. I'm still not sure how NES Mini gets marketed.
@Captain_Gonru "And what effect will that have on how they order for NX?"
That used to be my biggest worry, after the failure of Wii U would retailers even bother to stock NX? But I think I forgot all about that as we've spent the past year trying to figure out what NX even is. (When I'm seriously thinking it's a tessaract cube that plugs into other things I know I've been thinking about it for far too long.) So thanks for reminding me that retailers are going to load up their shelves w/ NES Mini and not have any room left for NX. Why even bother, who's going to buy it anyway?
Just got back from the library picking up season 5 of TT, I've read it's weird, we'll see.
@Allspice Thanks for doing all the math.
So are you saying Japan got 43 Wii U Games from them and the US got 18 Just Dance games and 1 Rayman game? Oh joy, can't wait for the NX game library.
Seriously, I do think Squenix will come thru, I'm still hoping for FF7 Remake on NX, and a lot of other games base don their 3DS games and hopefully NX Home and NX HAndheld play the same games. Wii U may have sold better with a wider variety of Monster Hunter games as well but you didn't mention Capcom.
NX will still be hurting w/o EA though, FIFA and Madden are system sellers, and CoD and Destiny from Activision, which has supported Wii U w/ Skylanders, just not AAA games. I personally think NX should just be a $199 "2nd console" w/ great exclusives and few mature games, but I'm not sure if enough people buy 1 of those. They bought 100mil Wii, so it's possible.
@IceClimbers There's a DQ game on Wii U? Do you mean DQ10 online in Japan? Well that ain't helping me much here in the US, though technically you got me on that one. I can't count SSB as a BN game though even if they did make it. If EA Sports makes MK NX it's still a Ntineod game. Not that I think they will.
Bottom line, as I just wrote about in the post above (probably should have combined my 2 replies in hindsight) I don't see NX getting major 3rd party AAA support, FPS, sports, mature games like GTA. Sure they'll get some, Skylanders, Just Dance, Lego Dimensions, maybe another Lego game, Sonic, licensed stuff like Adventure Time. Kids games. Family friendly games. But not gamer games. And w/o gamer games you can't sell a console at $349. Maybe not even $299. You need to be at $199. Nintendo should figure out a way to do that, own the "casual" moniker, and make great games.
Booo! The one game I've been looking forward to for the longest time...
@RCMADIAX
I will say this. You of all people here actually do have experience developing for Wii U, and I hope people will value your opinion in this matter more than others who have never developed a game on a console before.
laaaaaaaaaaaame
Well this is just embarrassing.
I hope the gaming industry dies with Wii U.
they've lost my sale. Sounds like they either didn't even start porting it, or lacked the skill to port it to the Wii U. All these devs want is the path of least resistance. Typical lazy and inept 3rd party developers. I'll continue to boycott all of these companies even on my PS4 Neo when I get one.
@Allspice that makes sense, for me it seems like a weird choice to emphasize the press deadlines rather than the content.
Like this kind of information should be accessible to everyone, and really isn't a good time or format for an interview.
@3MonthBeef "Why would Nintedo"
Do you really want to play the "Why would Nintendo...?" game? That company has been doing a lot of weird stuff over the past few years. Why would Nintnedo release a home console in March? Why would Nintnedo keep the 4 year old Wii U at $299 when Xbox One is at $249? Why would Nintnedo make Metroid Prime into a soccer game? Why would Nintnedo make Animal Crossing on Wii U a board game? Why would Ntinedo make so few amiibo? Why would Ntineod not make an amiibo centric game like so many people have been wanting and expecting?
I'll stop there, but trust me, lots of other people can add lots of other things Nintneod has done over the past few years and ask - why would they?
Next proper Metroid? NX. Project Cars? NX. Binding of Isaac Rebirth? NX. RIVE? NX.
If developers keep on relying on NX (a console of which nobody knows anything about yet) or throwing it in simply as an excuse not to release games on WiiU, the NX will be buried by the weigth of the expectations and, mathematically, disappoint,
I like Two Tribes and I thought RIVE was an exceptional game, but I'm not going to fork out €350+ for a new console - the last one I bought isn't even 4 years old yet...
It feels weird that some of you people are actually happy that games are being postponed to the new console...like one day you'll wake up and magically find the NX under the xmas tree without you having to spend a cent...I'm actually pissed of I'm "forced" to buy a new console...
I wondered what happened to this.
@Captain_Gonru The only thing crazier than all of those AC amiibo is those "Playmation" Marvel toys. I can't believe those things haven't wound up on the clearance end caps yet. Who is buying them, they don't make any sense.
And as aaron said, I dont think they ar elowering th eWii Uprice b/c I dont 'think they relaly wan tto sell it. I knwo that sounds like an insane conspiracy theory - what company doens't want to sell it's product? - but really, I don't think they have a lot of inventory left to sell and I don't think they want to make more, they'd rather make NES Mini's and NX consoles. There are good games on Wii U people might spend $199 to play, and a big price cut to $199 during the dog days of summer w/ some good Select titles would cause some sales. But I don't think they have Wii U left to sell. When they announce NX they can cut the price to $199 but announce it like Xbox One, "while supplies last", make it a true clearance sale, not a price cut sale. I think that's the plan Kimishima has, he never liked Wii U, it isn't his lost, it's his to clear out to make way for NX.
..well......this is just unacceptable...
At least they have sound reasoning behind the delay. I am finally playing through Toki Tori 2 on Wii U at the moment and to my surprise it is actually a wonderful game and I will certainly be picking up Rive whenever it does release on a Nintendo platform thanks to my positive experience with the game. We will have definitely lost one great development team when they call it quits after this game, shame I didn't see how talented they were earlier.
@rjejr Only eight Just Dance. I think it was eight. There was one we didn't even get, the Yokai Watch one. XD To be fair to Ubisoft, they did release legit games on the Wii U. AC III/IV, Watch dogs and the two exclusives that didn't stay exclusives (Rayman and ZombiU).
@spizzamarozzi The Wii U is a sinking ship, unfortunately. I've loved it from day one, even all the GamePad uses that are divisive. Games don't sell in numbers worthy of continued development by even Nintendo itself, though. I don't think anyone likes the situation but there's not much to be done about it.
NX represents a bit of a reset button where interest may boom again and we may get a much stronger console. At the very least the problem of two entirely separate development paths for portable and console games is apparently going away so even a console with mostly Nintendo games to support it should have more games.
Yes, I'd rather everything come to Wii U and be awesome. Sadly it's an untenable desire.
@Captain_Gonru Hey, don't give me credit for a @rjejr classic theory! There is something off going on about it though. It makes so little sense to see it on the shelf and sort of ridiculous now that XB1 has plummeted lower. Though... XB1 price drops are sorta telegraphing a lack of confidence. It has dropped 3 times in just a few months hasn't it? The $299 was supposed to last to October and then... boom another Summer price drop. Maybe Nintendo is just waiting to see how low XB1 drops. lol.
@Captain_Gonru @rjejr Also, $150 or bust. $200 with two games bundled maybe. Maybe a Zelda bundle with the two remasters and a nice decal to capitalize on renewed Zelda interest. Maybe one with wings and nose of The Great Fox glued on and they can buy up all the used Star Fox games and pack them in. Maybe a paint splatter decal packed with Splatoon and a demo for Paper Mario. Maybe a vertical stand in the shape of a gun stiletto with Bayonetta 1 & 2 and throw in Wonderful 101, why not. Okay, I'm getting cynical.
I can get it on PS4 but would have rathered it on Wii U for off tv. I guess it's a positive for ps4 which doesn't have much at all going on now.
@bluedogrulez Exactly! I can see that kind of dedication for a fighter where the fps count more. I don't see a dip in fps in a frenetic shooter being a big problem. In some cases it's a bit of a break.
I still play Gradius V regularly and that game is freaking amazing. On the ps2 for crying out loud. Don't tell me that developing a 2. 5d shooter on a system 2 generations removed from the ps2 is that much more difficult.
Ah what do I know just release it already.
@ArcadeLove traditional gaming may be dying (although the PS4 is selling faster every single month than the PS3, XOne and PC are building momentum, Pokemon Go is a phenom, and VR is exceeding expectations on every platform), but your grammar is already dead and buried.
Nintendo handicapped the Wii U and has excluded all but the biggest developers from concrete NX information and SDKs.
They don't want to be copied, like they were with Wii, but consumer trust isn't something they can afford to gamble away.
12 months from now, things might be different for the big N, but Pokemon Go has only bought Nintendo more time, not more certainty.
@Captain_Gonru " (check the toy dept. at Target next time you're in one to see what I mean)"
The big Target (my kids name them, we have little, middle and big, we shop at Target a lot) had a whole new floor layout where the cell phone, aka mobile, smartphone, whatever - section has grown huge and kind of shoved the videogame section off to the side. It's weird, more like a Best Buy. Haven't noticed anything in my little white trash Target yet, but our clientele is so poor it might not be worthy of such a revamp.
I think they need to announce NX late Aug or early Sept - for some reason Sliegeach has been saying those dates, not sure why, but why not? - and if they drop the price then, they can sell off all of the Wii U by Nov to make room for the NES Mini by BF. Also, PM:CS in Oct, so that should be the last of the Wii U section. Which technically isn't a Wii U section anymore, only a Nintendo section, in Target anyway. Unless we think NX is backwards compatible. We don't think that, do we? I mean I'm nto even sure it will have s disc drive. May get some remaster ports, but not the same game, disc.
Watched 3 episodes of TT, I can see why all the hate, it's weird. Actually it's the opposite of weird, it's normal. I need Mod God, Mother May Eye and Larry. Well see how the last 10 go.
@SetupDisk are you ridiculous or what?
Right now, Rive might have done well on PS4, due to the 'drought' (clearly coming from late adopters used to picking up a ton of games just before new hardware is announced), but in September?
As in, in the middle of the biggest influx of new content all year?
I'd have picked this up in July or August (maybe), but not in September.
My big indie is the next game from thatgamecompany, but if you think there's nothing on PS4, watch your Wii U collect dust all you want.
@aaronsullivan 3 price drops in 2 months I think. I'm sure if I looked it's a meme by now, how low can it go and all that. And even I'm not so daft that I think Nitneod should respond to a MS move, it's not about Ntinedo waking up and saying - "Oh look, MS dropped the X1 price, we need to match that." - it's about Wii U being $299 w/ 1 game, 1 2 year old game, for 3 years now. IT's really toolate for a price drop now, it was too late when it went to $249 last BF. w/ a console sellin gthat poorly you drop it fast, whenever a big game launches - drop for MK8, drop for SSB. I'm pretty sure Ntineods price drop philosophy must be "Well lets just see if "X" game sells it first, then we'll talk about it after." No way no how it should be $299 4 years later, and not b/c of MS today, but b/c it's a 4 year old home console that needed a price drop after year 1, which it sort of got, year 2, year 3, and year 4.
And I'm not sure what the tech spec comparison really truly is, but w/ a blu ray drive, 500GB HDD, plenty of streaming and other multimedia stuff, X1 has to be justifiably worth more than Wii U. Nintendo just doesn't want to sell it, they want to forget about it and move on.
Oh, and I did see your LOL at the end, but you now me, once I get started...
The cynical post was fun though. That 800k number disturbs me b/c a packed in Zelda Wild for $199 should have sold 1 million Wii U by itself. They arne't going to pack in anything, not even Paper Mario, they just arne't even going to try, just sell it all of fclearance. That 800k in 1 year number, that's about 1 month for PS4, w/ Zelda Wild coming out, they arne't even trying.
It would be nice to see RIVE Switch to Nintendo NX, as it will encourage other gamers to try it out, plus the Rive is said to be better on the NX: http://nintendonx.yolasite.com/
@NodesforNoids
Are you joking? Some kind of fanboy or what? For it's share of the market the releaes coming out this year for PS4 are pathetic, I love my PS4 but it's getting concerning that a system that has sold so well has so little in development for it.
Mobile really is killing traditional gaming. If it wasn't for rehashes what would PS4 have out now compared to he same time frame for the much slower selling PS3?
What a great news just after you get out of bed (sarcasm). Now I'm waiting that Jotun, Yooka-Laylee, Little Devil Inside and Bloodstained will be moved from Wii U (because those are games that need 150% of the power of Wii U - I don't even know what a miracle is tLoZ:BotW to look like this on Wii U) to "maybe NX", thank You Two Tribe (and i was looking to September release....)
P.S. That same lame excuse was when project CARS was in the making for Wii U. They should just cut the opponents from 30 to 12 and bring 30 fps but no, it need to be playing just like the PS4 and XOne version, otherwise it's not the same game.....
When I saw the news about FAST RACING NEO and STEAMWORLD COLLECTION coming to Wii U retail earlier, I hoped that RIVE would be another game in the eShop Selects series.
@OGGamer: Yes! It is a total break from the chaos. You get a sixth sense of when to expect it, too (okay, after dying a million times on the same level, maybe it's more recall than 6th sense) but it adds to the experience.
More seriously, the RIVE demo has breaks in the action as you do the hacking thing. So, agreed, just release it already.
@A01 All Shinen did was build their own engine for Wii U. It makes use of the eDRAM and all 3 cores.
kind of ironic the article uses the word "switch" before the name was revealed.
