The Pokémon anime is officially one of the longest-running animated franchises of all time, and over its five different series - split into 19 seasons - we've seen the lead characters change a little in general appearance.
However, some fans have reacted rather badly the the teaser for the new Sun and Moon anime, based on Pokémon Sun and Moon 3DS title, which is due to air later this year.
The short preview shows Ash returning to school, but it also showcases the new art style, with the lead protagonist boasting a more child-like, comical appearance.
Some fans have reacted rather negatively to the footage, with one YouTuber publishing a video simply entitled "WTF is this" while another comments "Is this fan-made?" - needless to say, we can't be held responsible for any of the potty-mouth action contained with these clips, so watch at your own discretion.
Over on Kotaku, they've highlighted the somewhat rough nature of some of the animation and artwork, which includes a rather strange-looking Pikachu (admittedly screen-grabbed during a piece of fast animation, rather than a static scene):
As ever, it's probably wise to reserve judgement until the series is actually on-air, but it's fair to say this marks the biggest visual change in the history of the anime. What are your initial thoughts on the footage? Let us know with a comment.

Meh. Though it does look fairly crude.
"The Pokémon anime is officially one of the longest-running animated franchises of all time, and over its five different seasons - each split into 19 seasons - we've seen the lead characters change a little in general appearance."
@Damo Don't you mean episodes?
I thought the style change to BW onwards was a good one. This. .hm.
We've gone far from that once so fat but so cute lil' Pikachu, huh...
I liked that Ash was a little older in BW/XY... now he's been regressed back to an 11 year old. Meh. GM is really shaping up to be a soft reboot of the whole series
Noticed an overall drop in quality but that specific still is abysmal.
what happened to Ash's face?
That's a dumb screenshot to focus on, it shows Ash and Pikachu on a wave runner type Pokemon (forgive me as I don't recognize it immediately), going quite fast, so of course his and Pikachu's hair will be blowing in the wind. In fluid action, nothing about it looks particularly wrong at all. In fact I'm sure you can search all the many episodes that have aired over the years and find far more disturbing images of Pikachu and/or Ash if you freeze at just the right moment during a segment of quick animation.
Beyond that, focusing on Ash's overall new look. I honestly like it. I think its a nice update that makes him a more inviting character to examine.
If I cared about the anime I'd be disappointed in the more child like animation. I feel for anyone that actually does watch the show, though
It looks like the Pokemon cartoon to me. Which I've always thought looks rather blah, b/c I only watch the movies. Which reminds me, I think I'm 1 behind. But really, w/o this article, I'm sure I could have watched that and "Fan-made" would have never ever entered my mind.It may look 10% different, but 90% of it is the same Pokemon cartoon.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE no. Seasons. There are 19 seasons but 5 generations (I guess is the best term?)
Oh man, Pikachu's face though...
The problem here is two-fold, however.
1. They've altered Ash's core design, something they haven't done in the almost 19 years the show has been running. Yeah, his clothes change, but you could always recognize him regardless. With this change, it's more difficult to know that it's him. His face looks like it has gained 20 pounds and the facial features appear smaller. This is further accentuated by the fact that all other human characters in the trailer look fine.
2. This is coming off of the XY series, which is widely regarded as one of the best series in recent years. We were hoping that they could continue the winning streak they had established, and this reveal doesn't instill much confidence.
I guess it looks a little different, but it's not like Pokémon is an adult anime anyway. "Child-like" works because it's for kids. Whether or not it's in the house style and why it might be bad if it's not is probably another matter, but I think it looks appropriate for the target audience.
lol at that pikachu still though --- I know it's just a still, but I've seen better knockoff plushies!
Regarding the footage, looks like Pokemon. They caught him in the water at speed in that pic, you can find art like that in every season. Don't see what the fuss is about
commercials dont need to have good animation
I feel like some of this is just people not understanding how squash and stretch works.
Wow, another 8 badges for him to win just to ultimately loss in the finals. Yawn!
As someone who dared himself to watch every episode of XY and was successful, this is such a disappointment. Ash loses the league because his opponent had infinite health, then the world "ends", then he goes to school. What kind of sequence of events is that? Plus, Ash in XY was very confident and experienced, so it looks like that is all going to be taken away with the Sun & Moon arc. Oh well, I knew from the start that Ash would leave behind everything in the next series like he always does, but the climax of XY was pretty bad in my opinion, and the Sun & Moon series isn't even trying to fix it. In the end though, the show is a never ending marketing tool for the games, that's why Ash still has Pikachu, the region changes according to the games, and there are movies every year. So whatever.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE 19 seasons across 5 series, sorry I wasn't clear. Have edited.
sees pic
Pokemon Anime: Bootleg Edition.
Not a bad artstyle, actually isn't it often used with much bigger productions like anime movies? But such a change after so SO long it's gonna be pretty hard to get used to for the older fans (me included ^^; ).
@Tedikuma Ditto (no Pokemon pun intended), I was gonna say the same, some of the best and more vivid cartoons looks down right creepy if framed during fast actions XD
@gr33n-m3t4l-b0x The narrator at the beginning of BW and numerous occasions afterwards stated Ash was 10 years old even though it contradicts previous material such as the movie short of 1 year anniversary for Ash and Pikachu with the Pichu Brothers.
@SMBSS There are no gyms in Alola.
I'm a professional 2-D animator, and the outcry I've seen about this is absolutely ridiculous. The frame capture is an inbetween, not a key frame. You could go to a classically animated disney movie and see inbetweens just as bad, or even a higher budget anime movie. Plus, they move a lot in that cut, you literally cannot see this drawing in motion.
I guess I understand fans getting upset over the change in direction of the character design of a long standing franchise, but it's not objectively bad. In ways it's following similar trends in the anime industry as a whole.
Add to that the fact the doga animators get between 100 - 200 ¥ a drawing, and genga animators get like 5000¥ a scene on average, I mean to be able to afford a life, I'll allow a few bad drawings to slip on by...
God Ash looks so young this season it's super jarring when we've had an older look for a while now.
@Handy_Man You do realize that the ending to X and Y hasn't actually happened yet, right?
The world hasn't ended at all, though I do agree that his loss in the league was absurd.
I thought nobody cared about the anime anymore since its always the same and Ash never becomes the Pokemon Master he really is. All of a sudden people react!
Pikachu looks like Shin Chan in that pic tho!
Pfffftttttpfwhahahahaha
'Fans getting bent out of shape by the new Pokemon Sun and Moon anime' So? They get bent out of shape each season. The so-called 'fans' don't know what they want. Say they do change the animation to like it was during X & Y, they'll still complain its more of the same. Some people just cannot be happy with what they got.
Let's judge it based on a split-second frame! Is it just me, or are some Nintendo fans very quickly judging and more or less deciding to hate a product much more these. I mean, opinions are opinions but still.
Well, they just released the first two episodes of Pokémon Generations on YouTube so we can just forget the Sun & Moon anime altogether.
Pikachu's head looks bent out of shape because they are going fast. I saw the trailer several times and the animation is OK, just a bit underwhelming. What really got me was Ash's seemingly attitude like a jester of some sort.
Ash looks so weird to me now - I love it! I even use him in a Z pose (from the CoroCoro scans) as my icon on other sites. He reminds me of Monkey D. Luffy in a way.
Lmao the eyes on that Pikachu are disturbing and hilarious!
This just reminds me of all the generic cartoons that are hitting the market. The art style is similar to the one started in Adventure Time and Steven Universe.
the anime is embarrassing
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Surprisingly, no. He's correct to say seasons.
Each generation was meant to be it's own season (with the side seasons like Orange Islands and Battle frontier been part of the season that came before it).
However, because of the lengths of the later regions, they decided to split them up for the English releases, and now also split them for the original Japaneses versions too.
Cheap animation is cheap
Haha this type of stuff is why I don't consider anything after Gen 2 cannon for the show (like, the actual arc ends after Gen 2. Then it's just rehashes and recycles. The voice changes sealed the deal for me in Gen 3).
I seriously doubt its actually downgraded likely just a result of motion blur
As a cartoonist myself, I'm glad to see other folks defending that unfortunate screenshot. It's kind of the same as taking a "natural" picture of someone in motion: they're not gonna look the most graceful or pretty if you get them between key poses and without a sports lens.
As for the style, I'm on board. It reminds me of the looser anime styles like Medabots, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, Crayon Shinchan and the earlier Digimon movie. While not absolutely pretty compared to high detailed anime, the animation makes up for it in more fluid, exaggerated, and expressive actions.
And I can imagine this style with a movie budget would have some pretty wild action scenes.
@Kalmaro The departures haven't happened yet, but the league and Team Flare arc were the climaxes for the XY series, and I was disappointed in the league and didn't care for the Team Flare arc. By the world ending, that was the focus of the Team Flare arc, but it was saved as expected.
Just don't watch the anime, play the games!
I'm not gonna bash the new art style; I get the reasoning behind it. The series is now in a tropical setting, so it makes some sense to adjust the art style accordingly. That said, I think animators should know better than to slip a single frame of a derpy looking Pikachu into this, the Internet eats this stuff right up, and it won't take long for someone to notice it, then spread it like the plague!
I honestly haven't really watched the Pokemon anime since the start of the Battle Frontier. That said, this... looks terrible.
Still playing the games though. The new games look awesome.
I don't watch the anime any more, so the change doesn't really have much of an effect on me. But I honestly like it! As an artist I have always been a bit partial to more cartoony styles like this.n kinda reminds me of One Piece, and that isn't a bad thing IMO!
For a lot of the people that I talk to the upcoming sun and moon series is disappointing because the current season XYZ is very action-oriented you have battle scenes that are on par with the likes of Naruto. Ash has reached this level of badassery in his connection with Greninja and now he's being nerfed ...again. a lot of us just really wanted to see ash win the Pokemon League. You have a generation that grew up watching Pokemon and they have their own kids and now who were watching Pokemon too. That first generation we just want to see Ash succeed.
I think this looks very nice!
Fan(atic)s get "bent out of shape" with anything that changes the way they've used to seeing the things they are obsessive over. ^__^
It's just human nature! You develop nerve connections and associate dopamine bursts with certain things and are unable to obtain the same feelings if the thing is changed.
I don't see what the problem is here.
I wish they'd retire the show. I wish there were more Digimon animes. Overall they're far superior.
[howls in laughter from that still shot]
Yeah, that screenshot says one thing and yet the video trailer says something else. Leave it to the internet and the "fans" to twist a story with a 1,000 word pic.
His weird cheek zig-zag, squiggles have never looked more like an adolescent moustache!
@FullbringIchigo I don't know, but I can't help but laugh at pikachu
@Moshugan I here that. It's amazing the length fans will go to make their idols happy; though it usually ends in pain for both sides.
What people seem to forget:
OLM is a studio with many teams, and only has one of them working on a Pokemon series at one time. Each of the six teams at OLM have different strengths and weaknesses, as seen with the good artwork and great fight scenes of XYZ. A new series is probably in production over a year before it actually starts, so they have enough content to broadcast 20 minutes of animation each week for the next three years, so of course the same team that did Origins and XY/Z will not be doing Sun and Moon.
While the artwork is a downgrade, a lot of people are focusing too much on the negative. XY and a ton of artwork flaws as well, especially when it comes to the ever changing sizes of Dedenne and Luxray. Is anyone going to point out how smooth the animation is in the Sun/Moon trailer? They could've just drawn two frames for Ash and Pikachu's Z-Move, but the went the extra mile and even included wind effects on Ash's cloths and Pikachus ears. I think the smoother animation makes up from the underwhelming artwork, which is really only bad in close ups.
@Freelance that's a bit mean spirited. Many people like the show, including (possibly, probably predominantly) those of younger ages. Why wish to deny them their enjoyment? Less Pokémon anime doesn't mean more Digimon anime.
I don't watch either but I don't wish them to end for the people that do, they're not harming anyone. I hope both series continue as long as they can for the people that enjoy them.
Wow that face...( I actually liked x and y)
@Ogbert I never said anything about there being more Digimon shows if Pokémon is gone. I just wished there were more Digimon shows. That's all.
The Pokémon anime is incredibly repetitive. The same thing happens each episode, aside from random NPCs wanting help. I'm just surprised they keep on making them. Wish Digimon got the same treatment. Obviously some people love watching it, but IMO it's long overdue for retirement.
When I said they should change the anime, I was thinking of mixing up the story some more. Not ... this
I guess people just don't really understand animation, do they?
I don't like the new Art direction but I'll admit the trailer shouldn't be defined by that still shot.
They're trying to respond to Yokai watch it seems, but I wonder how that'll play out internationally.
I really, really, fail to see what's wrong with it.
In my opinion the hand-drawn-like style gives it a lot more character than the anime has had in the past decade or so. I really like it.
I don't see the big deal, it reminds me of Dragon Ball.
I don't watch pokemon but Ash.... ew he looks so messed up he looks WAY less mature and looks like some stupid goofy kid instead what the heck ew
I'm really surprised that it seems a lot of people haven't drawn comparisons with the style used in Yokai Watch, the official poster released a few days ago just screams Yokai Watch with Ash's Expression and Pose.. Obviously I know he's doing a Z-move pose but it's just like the weird poses the characters do in Yokai Watch.... So It's full circle, 'Yokai Watch is just Pokemon' now it's 'Pokemon is just Yokai Watch'
Personally I don't enjoy they style as XY/XYZ has been very well animated and stylish... This feels like regression to me
@spideyroxas I made the comparison to Yokai Watch on other sites, but got fatigued when I commented on this one.
Your right though, there's plenty of comparisons. The character in Yokai Watch goes to school, Ash is now going to school. The Rontom pokedex is obviously inspired by Whisper's Yo-Kai Pad. Sun/Moon also seems to be more focused on comedy, but we can't say for sure until the series starts.
I liked the older styles a lot more but as long as the story is good I don't mind this change of style too much, it will take some time getting used too it though... I sort of hope that it will be a bit like how they made the first season story since it felt a lot less repetitive than many other seasons. I'm definitely gonna watch this anime anyway though
This is the kind of thing people take issue with? Wow, some people live absolutely trouble-free lives if something like this bothers them.
It still looks like anime, it still sounds like anime, it's still watchable. What's the big deal?
A reboot of sorts is long overdue for the Pokémon anime series. Kids who first watched it back in the 1990's are in their late twenties now.
Ash Ketchum has spent 2 decades attempting to be the very best and hasn't really got anywhere.
"I wanna be the very best..."
This looks pretty bad, glad I stopped watching the Pokémon Anime near end Sinnoh.
I'll probably watch one episode, puke, then move on with my life like I always do with things that turned bad.
Except Fairly Odd Parents Season 10, and New SpongeBob, those amuse me to see how bad they can get.
I do understand why everyone is upset. The XY anime felt like a step in the right direction. The visuals were amazing and it developed actual characters and relationships between them (not just Ash and Serena either). This feels like they're making a children's TV show from my childhood where the situation almost reset every day, rather than a modern one which makes engaging stories and arcs.
If you don't know already - that frame that is featured is called a "smear frame". You could also just call it an inbetween. It is a single frame in the animation - since pikachu is moving so quickly in frame, they utilized this drawing to help the animation be just a tad bit smoother and less "strobe like"
Say what you want about the style as a whole - but those ugly smear and blur frames exist everywhere in animation - they are just so quick that people don't notice them.
The biggest complaints about the Pokemon Anime have for a long time been...
1. Ash: Idiot hero that solves everything with Shonen Tropes.
2. The show's plot is extremely shallow, writing lazy, almost always based around a "Monster of the Week", and is very infantile.
The trailer suggests the writers are making the show even more infantile, and Ash is still the protagonist.
People often use the excuse, "the show is for children", but that's not a reason for the quality of the media being poor, in addition, there are plenty of cartoons and anime that don't assume all children are morons and as such are still enjoyable to audiences of all ages even if the target audience was children.
I gave up on the Pokemon anime a long time ago though, so it's not like I have any personal stakes in the anime being good, but as a Pokemon fan, I'm disappointed that the most "living" representation of Pokemon, the anime, has gone even further down this direction.
The animation isnt bad. People are just upset with ash being redesigned. He does look younger but who cares. This show is aimed at kids and to promote the games mostly. Pokemon is kinda like the Simpsons
It has all gotten a bit One Piece-ish. But contrary to what the phrase would imply, I'm not sure if that's a good thing...
What about the Japanse videos on the official Pokemon Japanese channel, I didn't understand what they were about, I think they were just saying to what happened to people after Ash left Kalos
Looks great to me
QUALITY
Still looks better than the upcoming Mega Man cartoon. ;D
Oh my god its Dragon Ball Super all over again.
Remember Dexter's Lab? Well here's how Dee Dee looks in the new reboot...
Just kidding! This was her original look! I just happened to pull out a frame in motion...
...Which is exactly what's going on here, so shush.
I don't see the issue, honestly. Then again, I don't watch the Pokemon anime, so what do I know?
<- The face of a new meme! (Hopefully)
Yes, it's an inbetween. That doesn't excuse messing up Pikachu's head like that. (Also, that Dee-Dee a couple posts up is a "smear". It's an animation technique used to depict rapid bursts of speed. It's intentional, and doesn't count).
I think this looks waaaaay better, animation-wise. The action scenes seem much more fluid and varied than ever before.
It looks fine to me. Besides, I thought most people hated the anime?
Relax people, it's just Ash's Alola form.
@FriedSquid Mostly because of the censorship and 4Kid's horrendous handling of the dub.
This style looks identical to the one used in Yo-kai Watch but slightly rougher. I don't like Yo-kai Watch. At all. I also know how I would feel if this was a anime series I cared more about like, say, Digimon (Oh wait, Fusion. Ugh.) so in other words, I completely understand the outrage.
People do realize he's ten, right...?
That's why they're making him more childlike. He acted like a 15 year old, or what Red, or any other protagonist was like in the series.
Looks like it was drawn by a drunken child.
The screen grab is one of the oldest and stupidest tricks in trying to show how "bad" or "low quality" animation is. There are many "insert frames" in the midst of high-speed sequences that, if you freeze-frame, look super ugly. There are tons of these in the best Disney and Ghibli films, and in the worst animated series. They're part of a transition from action to action, and when in motion you'll either never notice them, or they'll look perfectly natural put together with the rest of the frames of that given scene.
The animation style is different. But judge it based on it in motion, not on a stupid freeze-frame that was clearly picked specifically to try and make it look as bad as possible.
(not trying to defend the Pokemon anime, I don't even watch it anymore, this is me debunking a dumb trick and defending animation as a medium rather than one specific show)
@OreoJoe
He was 10 at the start, but he must be 15 or 16 by now.
That's some Dragon Ball Super type of awful.
Looks a little bad, but the photo makes looks way worst.
But deformed style (kind of) is a huge success on japan. Just look at One Piece, is well animated, a perfect story and a strong sense of adventure, but the style is very crazy and exaggerated! That said, to me they should put the money on a series like Origins or Generations.
@Freelance "I wish they'd retire the show" is what you said in reference to Pokémon. That's an incredibly mean spirited thing to say towards all those who enjoy it. Who cares if you find it repetitive and boring? Those people enjoy it so let them. Don't wish for them to not have it because it's not to your taste.
You then proceeded with "I wish there were more Digimon anime". Now forgive me for thinking you thought there was a correlation between the two. I only came to that conclusion as otherwise that's a completely irrelevant statement to make. And if that was not your though process then that it makes your wish to end the Pokémon anime even more rotten.
It's one thing to wish something ends because you feel it's prohibiting the thing you like from happening, that's selfish but there's a logic. So that is why I read your Digimon statement that way.
But to wish something would end for no actual reason at all other than it's a thing you don't enjoy? Something that brings millions of others joy? That's just flat out mean spirited with no logic at all.
I didn't think Digimon was any good after the second season but obviously people such as yourself still enjoy it, so I don't wish to take that away from you. That would suck for you guys and it's existence has zero impact on me so why would I want that? Yet that is what you are wishing for fans of the Pokémon anime. You can't justify that.
@Freelance I miss monster rancher.
@GeminiSaint Pikachu's head shape is intentional here too. It's also an example of smear.
@Ogbert
I really doubt it. Instead of looking obviously deliberate (as in that Genie picture, which is no doubt a good example of smear done right), it just looks to me like the animator didn't care to get Pikachu's head/face right for that one frame.
Granted, it ultimately doesn't really matter all that much, because it goes by so fast it's impossible to notice in real time.
that doesn't look bad, i don't know what they are talking about
Watching the trailer, it looks fine.
But that one screencap looks abysmal.
@Roam85 I actually have never seen Monster Rancher. Sorry
I'm still going to watch it because it's Pokemon and honestly the animation doesn't bother me that much.
Did he become a 9 year old?
I just can't believe the anime is still running. I haven't watched it in years, but Pokemon was my main show back in the late 90's/early 2000's. Good times.
The art style itself is good. For Pokémon, though, it's disappointing, especially after the gorgeous visuals the XY/Z series gave us.
Now the rabid "hate everything slightly different" zealots have moved on to the anime?
The style is reminiscent of Osamu Tezuka, which is actually an incredibly retro style, and the animation looks a little better than a typical kids anime.
I think this is the really dumbed down, close-minded western fans who know nothing and appreciate nothing artistic whining about something being slightly different and knee-jerk hating.
This whole article is shameless click bait and the usual trolls are waiting to post on the top of the comments as always. Nintendolife has really gone downhill.
We can't really judge until it comes out, and that's what I'll do. But from what we've seen so far, this looks to be a disappointment. The Pokemon anime has gotten really repetitive over the years though, maybe something new won't be so bad.
This looks awful. The Pokémon Company seem to have really cut the budget with this new series.
Ash been eating too much McPika.
Ash been eating too much McPika.
Ash been eating too much McPika.
Ash been eating too much McPika.
@duffmmann I second this entire comment.
@Barbiegurl777
why would Pokemon dying make you happy? Suxch a strange thing to say. If yoiu don't like it ignore it. This franchise doesn't do you any harm.
Ash's design has really gone downhill since the first anime. Why does it look he has a twirly mustache now???!
@Dakt You are so right. LOL.
@Barbiegurl777 Just don't watch it. I don't.
Still, the lessons in friendship and sacrifice and camaraderie just make up for any lame animation they could churn out.
Honestly, as an animation fan, I think it looks pretty great in motion. And really, that's a big factor people seem to forget. Not every single frame of an animation is going to look like a gorgeous work of art, especially if said animation is designed more with motion in mind. (For comparison, Western animation focuses much more on fluidity than anime, for the most part mind you as there are huge exceptions, and neither style is inherently better or worse)
This kind of reminds me of the crazy-awesome moments from Birdy the Mighty Decode 02, where the style got all sketchy and crude and the action was ratcheted up to an 11. Some people took stills from the moments, making the individual frame look totally laughable as if I child had scribbled it. But that takes it horribly out of context, because in motion, the action was insane and beautiful. This feels like a similar case, but I'll reserve too much judgement for when/if I actually watch this.
@Joeynator3000 Is that you? @Megumi?
@Action51 Tbh it looks more like a western cartoon with the less chibi-style characters which imo is kinda off-putting. Mind you it isn't anywhere near as bad as others are saying besides that one still image, but I just don't personally like the new look.
Looks good enough for what it is and has always been. Animation style looks a bit more fresh and free and less rote. Fun.
@Rukiafan7 Isn't chibi the more childlike proportions of drawings? (Big head and eyes, short limbs like a baby) I don't see this as less chibi... maybe more, actually. It does seem to be taking a flatter coloring approach with less attention to representing lighting. That's probably what people are responding to. That often gives way to a more fun and fluid movement but not always.
So Pokémon is now Seinen instead of Shounen? This looks pretty interesting... But shouldn't Ash already know about status conditions, since that's all they seem to teach in the Pokémon schools?
@Rukiafan7 ...Maybe...
I'm going with my own name instead of an anime character now. So...o.o
Don't worry, my avi will still contain lovable and smexy anime girls. lol
Good god I hate this new anime, bring back the old one.
The graphics look like crap to me, honestly
I will definitely not be watching the new series...
Soooo, basically, they're going Teen Titans GO! on this. Got it.
@Legromancer She just hates RPGs.
When the Anime is good, the games are bad. When the games are good, the anime is bad. Sun and Moon are confirmed GOAT.
Ash kind of looks like this now.
@Freelance FYI, they've been making plenty of Digimon too. They just keep reinventing the universe so no one is as invested or cares as much, which if you think about it is kind of what people have been saying Pokémon should do. Guess it's kind of a double-edged sword. See here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Digimon_episodes_and_movies
Of course everyone likes and remembers Adventure 01 and 02. Tamers was my personal favorite. Frontier wasn't too bad once I got used to it. I flat out refused to watch Savers/Data Squad (the VAs were phoning it in, the art style was awful, and I can't even remember what kind of story or gimmick there was), which is when it completely dropped off the map for me so I completely missed Xros Wars/Fusion. The biggest splash Digimon has made in the past decade is Adventure Tri., a continuation of the original story line/universe, so I wouldn't be so quick to hit the reboot button.
Wow, what happened to Pikachu? It looks like one of those bootleg toys or something. The 1st generation sprites of Pikachu that aren't from Pokémon Yellow look better than this.
I'm glad I stopped watching this after BW ended.
Well, seeing how there aren't any gyms and a league, I'm going to assume that ash finally becomes a pokemon master here. Furthermore, can we please transition into making Generations a full fledged anime?
@PigmaskFan Actually, he's still ten. For some strange reason, he's never grown a day older since he saw that Ho-oh flying through the sky.
Which explains why Serena is a few years older than him, but they met each other when they were the same age.
I dont think that the art overall looks bad, it reminds me of medabots honestly.
Certainly an interesting direction. But like the voice change and change in animation style, I'll get used to it.
@Pants98 Too bad. You missed some of the ship's best stuff with XY and XYZ
well there goes my hopes for serena staying
Screw the Pokémon Anime, go read the Manga Pokémon Adventures.
It doesn't look that bad if you actually watch the clip. However, the anime creators basically have made it a point to make Ash seem younger and younger each new arc. This is just the culmination of it all. I mean... he's JUST NOW going to school >_>
And really, I don't think grown men and women really should have any right to judge a show clearly intended for children. It's obviously not made for you.
The new art style will take time to get used to, but that's to be expected with large changes. The surprise is that they've actually gone ahead and made such a large change to such a stalwart series. The contrast is increased by virtue of this lighter, more comic style following immediately after a more precisely detailed, action-centric style. Given the ending of the XYZ series, many full-time Pokémon fans are naturally going to feel like these drastic changes are complicit in a sort of "missed opportunity" situation for our poor old Ash Ketchum.
Ah well. Back to the drawing board for our protagonist - literally!
I just have one thing to comment on the overall art style and not the specific screen grab between frames: NO GOD! PLEASE NO!!! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
This is the Pokemon anime, what'd you think was gonna happen after gen 6? Did anyone actually think they'd let Ash win, or let Serena stay for more than one generation?
I don't think grown men and women really should have any right to judge a show clearly intended for children. It's obviously not made for you.
Those grown men and women were likely fans of the original show twenty years ago when they were children themselves.
Once again the "fans" overreact to something in the anime.
@Xilef Yeah they're basically just hating games and stuff as soon as they can for whatever moronic reason they can think of.
reminds me of inazuma eleven
High animation quality to my eyes.
@kupo I agree.
@killuaxgod It kind of does. (:
@SmaMan Freeze framing Simpsons DVDs I saw all kinds of weird ****.
@Barbiegurl777 Yeah Pokémon is over marketed but Sun and Moon are the most original games in years! They're shaking up the formula big time.
So first they said there is NO gyms, you cant get some pokemon NOT in their alola form, and now THIS!?!? I am seriously debating if this is worth the hype or not.
If you just watch the video and not get all hanged up on a bad frame, then you'll see it's not bad at all.
This is just bullpoop and a poor start moreever worst characters face , expected a lot more , wanna stop watching this but untill season 19 it was awesome .
Fans from INDIA
I've watched a lot of Pokémon and I did not got emotionally swept up in the story and specifically ash's character until xy/z. That version was finally the successful and confident person he should of always been. To see this 7yr old looking shadow of a good character hit me right in the gut. He acts like he needs to be on hyperactivity meds( I take them myself, not dogging anybody) and knows nothing about Pokémon now. It's just a real disappointment. The animation itself I could enjoy but the hit to the character I just can't. I don't know if I will watch any more of this season. It's kinda painful. Those of you who get into a good anime and fall in love with a character, you understand how it feels when they die or the series ends. It just sucks.
Ash went from being Ash Ketchum of Pallet town, destined to be the greatest pokemon master to Jose Alexandro of Mexico, destined to learn what pokemon is
I have to be honest but this is the worst pokemon series of all time. Why? 3 reasons.
-Pokemon sucks and barely new Pokemon
-Ash Ketchum face looks so stupid
-The designers who did these animation should be fired and have the Xy designers back.
If you agree with with me say "SM Sucks"
