Madden NFL used to be a regular face on Nintendo platforms, but we've not seen it for nearly a decade after Madden NFL 13 on Wii U. EA is still bringing us annual updates for FIFA (even if they are "legacy editions"), EA previously said they didn't plan to release it on Switch back in 2018, but a recent job listing indicated Madden might finally be arriving.
This discovery comes from YouTuber Doctre81, who found a listing titled "Online Software Engineer - (C++) - Madden", dating back to November 2020. Under the job requirements, one section asks for 2 years of experience working on "Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo game consoles". That might not sound like much, but previous EA job listings haven't included Nintendo within their criteria.
At the very least, EA could be investigating a potential release. It's worth keeping in mind that back in June 2020, EA confirmed it would release seven Switch games in that 12-month period. June 2021 is only a few months away, and we've had six games confirmed since then, including Apex Legends earlier this week.
That leaves one more to go, but given Madden's annual release schedule, EA could potentially be waiting until the inevitable Madden NFL 22 – as opposed to a Madden NFL 21 port – considering they traditionally launch in August. Either way, let's just hope it isn't another legacy edition, eh?
Would you be interested in seeing Madden on Switch? Tell us in the usual spot.

I’m sure all 4 people interested in Madden on Switch will snap this up.
Is there really a demand for Sports Games on Switch tho? : /
it will be ps1 legacy edition version
It'll be a Legacy Edition of the.2012 version.
I gave up waiting for a Switch version, got it on Stadia instead for playing portable or big screen. Would have bought on Nintendo given the option.
At least let it be Madden 08
Probably a Legacy version, just here for them to make money every year.
Switch Pro, confirmed.
Wow the switch must be selling well!
I'm not interested in EA games anymore
The Sims 4, please.
Oh, nevermind.
I heard EA will use subcriptions style for The Sims 5.
How far EA can be so tyranny ?
Speaking about sport games, i want Cartoonish Kickboxing games like K-1, NOT MMA / UFC.
@V_Va not so much among ‘gamers’ I think, but parents looking to buy something for their kids, definitely!
I never want to support EA again. They have effectively killed the sports game genré. We will never see a good football game again. Yeah, I'm actually talking world football now (soccer), not American football. Sorry for the cross-reference.
Edit: And the reason is a combination of licensing and their microtransactions.
The risks are too high and thus there are no value for other companies to try and make a game that's better than FIFA, which should no longer even be too difficult. But the licensing on clubs, players, leagues etc. puts consumers off and too many are addicted to the trading card game. When was the last time we saw a good sports game? Yeah... no one remembers. It's been that long.
Hopefully it will be a complete and proper version of Madden and not a "legacy edition" like EA has done with the FIFA series. But knowing EA, they'll try to pass off a gimped version of the game and then will complain about low sales and how unprofitable Nintendo systems are.
This may be a good case of 'be careful what you wish for because you might just get it'. If it happens no way it will be nothing more than cashing in on the name.
@V_Va
"Is there really a demand for Sports Games on Switch tho?"
Yes, indeed.
I'm waiting for Cartoonish Boxing / Kickboxing games like used to be 10 years ago.
Tom Brady for Smash confirmed.
I wouldn’t care if it’s a legacy edition or scaled back. This would be so awesome to have a portable football game. Would love hockey too.
@Dragwhite
Thanks. This comments proves my point a couple of posts below yours. The best games are around two decades old now. It's criminal.
@Aneira Super Mega Baseball 3. Hasn’t been out much longer than a year I believe. Gets very deserved hype, and it’s an absolutely incredible sports game that the developers continuously listen to the fan base and improve with constant updates and new features. There’s one sports game.
Would also consider rocket league a pretty good sports game. Not sure what else you’d call it.
Also Tony hawk definitely a sports game. Confirmed coming. Have to imagine that’s going to be pretty good...
I haven't played Madden since the Gamecube launch. If the Franchise mode is good and the game is all on cart, I'll come back on the Switch.
Portable Madden would be awesome and I really hope they do it. FIFA 19 was a really well-made soccer game, and made a ton of improvements over FIFA 18 on Switch. Unfortunately that's the last time EA put any effort in a Switch port. My Switch is loaded with indie and first party titles, but Madden would really scratch an itch for me since I have no desire to sit in front of my TV and play a football game. But on the go or laying in bed would be ideal. This would sell better than a lot of these commenters are assuming. Madden's broad appeal is mostly for the Switch owners who don't frequent gaming websites like this one.
@V_Va Not sure on a large scale. I buy a FIFA and NHL every 5 years or so. EA definitely does not improve on the titles enough to purchase them every year.
That being said, I played FIFA on Vita to death and would definitely dish out for a full-fat version on Switch. NHL as well. Not a big Madden fan, but might just for the portability aspect. Sports portable is a blast.
Isn't the 7th EA game coming to Switch Knockout City? The previous article with Jeff Grubb's reported list includes an "EA Originals title from Velan Studios."
If Madden's coming to Switch maybe it part of EA's 7 Switch games for 2021-22, if they continue their bare minimum approach with Nintendo. Though I'd much rather have NHL21...
@tomdasilva89 you are correct. The 7 titles are already revealed. This would be June 2021-22 I assume. EA will likely announce it's plans for the next year after the end of this fiscal year.
If they can offer full versions of their main sports lines and Mass Effect Trilogy, that's all I'd want from EA.
As a Canadian. Who loves the leafs. I’m so sad we don’t have a nhl game.
@saotomemtl Cool, that's what I thought. The article says only 6 have been announced but with Knockout City (which some reviewers are saying is actually a pretty fun time) I think we already have our 7 for the year. Hallelujah, EA... 😐
@sixrings Agreed. Go Leafs Go!
@moonymarauder and a bigger install base than the new systems combined....the Switch is too big to ignore.
Having a franchise such as Madden on the Switch - who had yet to have a real American football game on it as far as I know - would be huge. People here may hate EA for good reasons, but this would be a major deal to see a Madden on Switch this fall alongside the other consoles.
There is a large swath of sports fans who already own a Switch and would definitely give a portable Madden a try.
ive been wanting games like mlb the show and madden on switch for a while now, but madden isnt very good, so its good for nintendo if it is on switch because its a big title, but not good for players because well, newer madden games kinda suck ngl
So much hate for Sports games here. There are former PSP/Vita owners who jumped over to Switch because Sony didn't have a follow up handheld. Those folks, me included, may be more interested in games like Borderlands or Madden. Personally I want NHL to come to Switch so I can play it on the go.
If this is true I’m thinking next year and pro exclusive. No way madden runs or looks acceptable on current switch.
Yes, yes, thrice yes!
on one hand, i love football.
on the other, madden is a complete dumpster fire these days
@V_Va "Is there really a demand for Sports Games on Switch tho?"
I believe there is demand for a good sports game, if only somebody would release one.
Sports games are my main thing on Switch. I am not into Football though, but would give it a try.
But for now I actually look forward to RBI21 in a few days.
My first thought of reading this was "Switch Pro only" version.
I don't believe this but I might pickup Madden on Switch but I hat to support EA at this point.
@Dman10
NHL would be amazing. I have quite a few hockey games and it would be nice to play it on Switch.
I just assumed it was already on Switch but was a lousy port nobody played
As much as I think it would be beneficial lending more credence to Switch as a legit platform, Madden as it is now is a shell of it's former self vs even 10 years ago. They put so much effort into MUT and The Yard where the can perpetually monetize the f*** out of it's gullible fantasy players, they've barely put much work into franchise mode in almost a decade now since '12.
@Mountain_Man tbh people will still buy a Madden Legacy Edition because it’s the first Madden game on switch so I think some people will still buy it because of portability
Neither EA, on there sports games, and specially the NFL don't deserve a single cent from me.
@tomdasilva89 madden is not part of the 7 games approach to switch.
U are all forgetting about Lost In Random. The EA original announced last year for switch and other platforms
Does everyone forget how good Fifa looks and runs on switch????? I find this very funny
FIFA on NS: this game sucks because it is not a full featured game as on other platforms.
BUT NO ONE CARES THAT FIFA RUNS AT 60 FPS HAS 1080p AND 720p IN DOCKED AND HANDHELD MODE RESPECTIVELY
Apex Legends on NS: This game sucks because it is blurry and the frame-rate sucks.
BUT NO ONE CARES THAT APEX ON SWITCH IS FULL FEATURED AND THE SAME AS OTHER PLATFORMS.
Hmmmmm
@V_Va if just two percent are interested, which, I am pretty sure there’s more, then you are talking about a solid 2-3 million.
@caseyyt13 I honestly rather not see these notable games at all. Look at Apex Legends and titles like Outer Worlds; just because something can technically be ported to the Switch, it doesn't mean it should be.
In the end, many of these games just become infamous due to the obvious hardware limitations and framerates.
Until Nintendo changes their business model (a bit more RAM wouldn't have hurt the console, for example), most notable titles are better off not being ported at all.
Too late EA.
You wont get any of my moneyz, ever
i will get it even if they port 21. i want to play madden portably. i know the game sucks but from what i have played it is fun and for franchise i just need a schedule in game. for 2k i did not know you had to download extra content and had to make my own schedule when i first got it
@Aneira The only good sports games I can think of as of late are probably the Mario sports games and Tony Hawk 1+2. It's such a shame that the genre is dominated by a company who doesn't give a darn about any sort of quality or letting people have fun whatsoever.
@V_Va
If developers would put real effort into Switch versions of sports games I'd definitely buy some and I'm sure plenty of other people would as well.
There is massive demand for sports games on the switch. Good to see if madden comes. NHL next please EA and have NCAA arrive on switch when it comes back.
@sixrings As a Canadian who loves the Canadiens, I'm so sad you like the Leafs.
Madden is waiting for the Switch Pro. They want a 4k football.
@anoyonmus I didn't say Madden was the 7th, I said the 7th was Knockout City and that maybe Madden would be part of a hypothetical set of new EA games for the 2021-22 fiscal year if they continue with this 7-games-a-year approach.
And I definitely knew about Lost in Random, there's a link to the NL page in this article. I watched that EA Play when it announced and remember thinking LiR was the only good-looking game from that whole presentation — also yay it's coming to Switch!
Are they going to update Madden 2012 to run on the Switch?
@tomdasilva89 oh sorry then
whoever is hoping for ME Legendary Edition. Its not happening anytime soon.
But this will depend on when LIR releases tho
The best Madden experience is Madden 08 for the Nintendo DS, played on the 3DS XL. Having a second screen comes in handy for knowing what's happening on the entire field.
Not interested in supporting the NFL. They need to work out a way to bring back a college football game.
Do we really need this?
I switched to playing sports games on the OG Xbox when I realised that one Madden save would take up the majority of my GameCube memory card.
Yes please, Day 1
Go Rams!!!
EA only publishes glorified shovelware these days, we could do without them.
I'd love a good football game on switch. Last one I played on a nintendo was Madden 64. I believe it lacked the NFL license but had the NFLPA license
@Mountain_Man
This is gonna get a lot of hate here but here is my opinion.
I feel like it is fair for EA to make a custom version of Madden first (using Ignite or Frostbite) just to test the waters to see how many people are interested in Madden. If Madden sells well on switch, then maybe EA will add in more features and eventually make it the full version.
It has been like 8 or 9 years since Madden appeared on a Nintendo console. Same case with FIFA. FIFA came to Nintendo consoles for the first time since FIFA 13 appeared on the Wii U.
Also FIFA and Madden have been generally different when it comes to handhelds. This can be due to the lower graphical power due to the handheld being carried everywhere.
Sure, NBA 2K is the same on switch as it is on Xbox One and PS4 but now that we have PS5 and XSX/S, we are gonna eventually get inferior versions of NBA 2K on switch which it is most likely gonna be the same as the last gen consoles and the switch doesn't have much graphical power.
It also seems EA wants to keep the 60 FPS on the switch version of FIFA. If FIFA was to use Frostbite on switch, we would end up with 30 FPS on switch and if EA somehow decides to implement cross play, well , let's just say people on switch lose a lot.
In EA's point of view, going from 60 FPS on FIFA for switch to
30 FPS on FIFA for switch is like a demotion
This is the same case with Madden. If Madden was to use the Frostbite engine on switch, it would be at 30 FPS which for some people will feel like that is sluggish. Same with FIFA. And also if EA implements cross play, other consoles will have the advantage over the switch.
AND for a lot of people, 30 FPS for FIFA and Madden is generally sluggish and not very playable
@V_Va yes? I'd buy nhl on switch, as it stands i cant buy nhl.
why?
I don't own a ps or xbox, just switch and pc.... and pc doesn't get nhl, if anything sports games are largely considered a console type of game...
@anoyonmus I would hope you recognize that "testing the waters" with a second rate product is a flawed approach.
@Mountain_Man thing is. We won’t get a full version of FIFA or Madden. Seems EA will want to keep their sports games at 60 FPS on all platforms
“ testing waters “is done by Capcom before if u didn’t know that with Ultra Street Fighter 2. It has also been done by EA with FIFA 18.
If madden on switch sells well, then EA will probably put more madden games on switch just like how FIFA 18 sold well enough on switch for EA to put more FIFA games on switch.
Then maybe EA will put out a full version of Madden
( which they probably won’t).
Even UST2 is also flawed and a second rate product based on its mixed reviews
@V_Va As a lapsed sports game fan, I’d probably check it out if EA put in the effort. It’s hard to be employed, be a dad, be a gamer, and be a sports fan. If I could plug away at a game of Madden while I have a baseball game and it’s many commercial breaks on in the background, I would. Sports games haven’t really advanced much in the past 20 years, so if I can get one that can hold 720p and 30 fps in handheld, and it’s not broken, I’d rather play in handheld than be locked to the TV with PS5.
@anoyonmus Keeping the framerate at a solid 60FPS is a laudable goal, and I don't mind if there are certain visual concessions necessary to achieve that. What I'm concerned about — assuming EA is even planning on a Madden release for the Switch — is that the entire experience will be watered down by simplifying or even cutting features like season and franchise modes.
@Mountain_Man then they have to use frostbite for that to keep it the same then and then Madden on switch will be at 30 FPS, not 60 FPS.
@Bizaster it will be a legacy edition except it won't say legacy edition in the front.
EA will trick people into playing it by having people thinking it would be the same as other platforms but NOPE
@Bizaster IKR
