Nintendo has dropped a new, but rather short, trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, introducing some of the allies you'll meet in the game.
We get a brief look at Sheikah researchers Robbie and Purah, as well as the King of Hyrule himself. You might remember both Robbie and Purah from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; Robbie was based at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab, while Purah was found at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab in Hateno Village.
Last week, Koei Tecmo producer and head of Team Ninja, Yosuke Hayashi, said he hoped the team would be able to make "more interesting games" like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity in the future. The game launches exclusively on Switch on 20th November.

Looking forward to this one? Have you already got a copy pre-ordered? Let us know in the comments.

Sheikah sure do get comically short with age eh?

YEEEEES! Love them, love their designs! Ok that brings up a lot of story potential, we'll probably play as them defending almost-dead-Link in the Great Plateau
Purah looks so weird...
This games looks very promising story wise. Kind of disappoints me this effort wasn't put into BOTW. Characters might as well of been generic soldiers for how they were in BOTW.
Nonetheless, optimism! Loved Hyrule Warriors, hopefully Age of Calamity is just as great.
Tfw the Koei Tecmo Warriors spinoff has a better and more fleshed out story than the actual main game it's spun off from
First Persona 5 Scramble, then Nioh 2 and now THIS? KT is giving me so many reasons to just throw money at them
yeesssssssss i knew this would happen
Hyrule Warriors was such a pleasant surprise for me, I had never played a Warriors game and even though the Gameplay is rather simple and repetitive, it ended up having a calming effect on me.
It is a great way to drain stress and anxiety. I will enjoy this game, I'm sure.
We need persona 5 scramble in the west!!
Yes! Yes! And more Yes! Keep bringing on the trailers.
I was thrilled to play as a Paya looking Impa, but Purah is an even better news. Hopefully we can unlock her older/younger self as seen in BotW.
Now all that's left is a trailer as Beedle's ancestor and we're all set.
Should one play the first Hyrule warriors game before this one? It's been on my list to buy for a while, just concerned that it may feel like a backwards step to play it after playing this.
Any thoughts?
@MS7000 You didn't think Robbie and Purah had personality in BOTW? Honestly I thought they were some of the best parts lol...
Lol those two young and... tall
@YonVonBlett I don't think you have to. The last one was like a celebration of the whole franchise prior to BotW with an original plot, whereas this one is just based on BotW. It seems like similar gameplay so doing this then going backwards should be fine
@YonVonBlett I'm almost confident this game will be shorter than the original. The first HW was a melting pot of insane Zelda fan fiction ideas, BUT it had absolute unbelievable amounts of content because they could just throw whatever they wanted in there. It takes like 400-500 hours to 100%, not exaggerating.
This feels to me like a more concentrated product with, at the very least, fewer playable characters. I think AoC will be more enjoyable than the first game, but I dunno if it will ever match HW for sheer stuff to do. We'll see I guess :3
@Rhaoulos You know, I can accept Ganondorf's cyclical reincarnation in this dharmic universe...
... but Beedle?
Beedle is completely unworthy of a single reincarnation. His presence is the surest sign of a callous, uncaring universe. We could have had Medli or the flute-playing boy from LTTP, but instead... the haircut.
Shudders
Hopefully, Linkle will come back for Age of Calamity. Also, I loved the Zelda costume in Hyrule Warriors.
@TeslaChippie I meant more the characters in general; the champions looked cool, but I wasn't really invested in them nor were there many other characters I could care about.
Purah I mainly remember for being small and saying "SNAP!". Robbie I remember for his obsession over a damn furnace in front of his wife.
The final scene will be Kass hatching from an egg.
I just thought of a pink, bloody bunny and a cute, playful tiger when I read this.
@COVIDberry Beedle >>>> Tingle XD, and it's pretty much the same case.
Beedle is great.
That's one weird trailer.
Glad to see these characters back though.
Age of Calamity! Scream Insanity! All you ever gonna be's another great fan of me!
BREAK!
@Octane And then the whole island disappears... wait wrong zelda game
Finally, some humour.
The Zelda series has always taken itself too seriously.
Nice. Time for some new memes
Pre-lolified Purah isn't bad...
Hmm I'm half way through breath of the wild (I think) but now wondering if I should stope and play this first as story wise it makes sense
Awesome. Can't wait for this game. It's good to be able to be excited for upcoming games again! .. still need a proper new Nintendo Direct though.
I love how Impa is in the back like "I need a drink". Nothing like older sisters that act like younger sisters to make the actual younger sister face palm. (Speaking from experience.)
(Gotta say though they are true to my expectations and Robbie
S H R U N K)
So looking forward to this game!!!
@RupeeClock
It's the result of the Sheikah tech they are using to extend their lives long enough for Link to return.
@Sans_Undertale well i mean... Sans looks weird
Oh wow, that’s cool. Seeing them in this context makes their personalities make a lot more sense than in BoTW (especially Robbie...)
It is truly as if they’d expected to make prequels when developing the original. Such a masterpiece... playing it again now, and the DLC trials are even better than I remembered.
I was looking forward to seeing how they implement these characters in the Age of Calamity!
Each trailer looks more and more tempting, but I cringe a little when I hear the English voice work.
I'm really concerned whether this Koei game will be multilingual like the original BOTW was patched to be.
I played through the entire original game in Japanese, and if Age of Calamity is English-only, it will break my heart. I'd have to return my preorder and then import a copy from Japan.
This sounds exciting, should be fun seeing Purah, Robbie and Links unimpressed looks! (interesting to see the little egg-shaped guardian in the scene where Robbie is first seen, hope we get to learn more about the guardian soon)!!
I like both of them old and young
Well, there goes the darker, more serious tone I was hoping for. Didn't like Purah from Botw in the first place, as she was literally a 1000 year old Loli meme (but unironic), and now she seems even more annoying.
Bonus quest where you fight as tingle running through the hyrule fields and dies or escapes in the end. Throughout the quest your clothes fall off as enemies attack you, landing in the locations where you find the outfit pieces in BOTW
This game is going to be massive. I can already see it breaking sales records for any warriors game.
@ToadBrigade Hard disagree, the dumber the better. Give me all the dumb stuff.
@Teksetter I thought they did a good job voice acting in BOTW but some of the cutscenes in the trailers for this sound kinda weird. Might be that thing where voice actors come back to a character and try to imitate the voice from before and exaggerate it too much. I feel like it's most noticable when Mipha speaks at the beginning of the... second trailer i think
Does anyone know what Zelda is holding in the first scene??
@Christofu
What little I played of BOTW and saw of its trailers in English seemed fine to me, really. I know the voice actors in other languages worked really hard to breathe life into their roles.
It's just a matter of my personal preference - I'm used to the characters' Japanese voices and catchphrases and hearing them in English seems a bit foreign to me! I really need that Japanese dialogue to be included to fully enjoy this game, although that won't be the case for the (vast?) majority of people outside of Japan.
@Teksetter ahh okay, that's fair enough. I switched around a lot. had it in english, played a little in japanese, and even in german a bit since i was in a highschool German class at the time
And you have a point about things sounding right. oddly enough I remember all of the champion lines in english better but revali's i remember in japanese for some reason
@Ryu_Niiyama @RupeeClock their legs are just tucked in under their shirts. It's actually a hardcore yoga pose.
@ToadBrigade at least they dress modestly. I swear I could never play xenoblade 2 on the tv because of the awful voice acting for certain characters and the character designs. It was too awkward to have on around little siblings, and frankly even alone it makes me kinda uncomfortable lol
That look on Impa's face when Purah turns up. A perfect embarrassed sister face. Impa: "Purah, for Hylia's sake, this is the Princess. Stop acting the fool".
I love it! Purrah is looking good at that age ngl. And I'm glad to see they still have their quirky personality traits. Man, November 20th needs to get here A-SAP
Wow this game, just wow.
Cant wait to play this gem.
Robbie and Purah should be playable characters but if they're good side characters that'd be nice too.
I'd get it but the price point is too much for me. I'm a huge kirby fan and had to hold off on star allies because I wanted to pick up xenoblade 2 and although I like kirby more xc2 was more worth the money. Now I'm picking up kirby instead of this.
Great! I didn't even think about those characters being playable, thought about them just as scientists. Now I'm really curious about who's coming next to the roster... Who else was alive 100 years ago? Maybe even some new characters they only spoke about in BOTW... Like Kass's mentor... I would love to play as Hestu
Cool, seems like even the side characters are getting some decent backstory. Can't wait for this game.
I hope that Age of Calamity will introduce new characters not seen in Breath of the Wild who are killed in the story, thereby making the plot more dramatic as the timeline between this game and Breath of the Wild begin to converge.
@Valhalla91 - That'll be a good way to disappoint yourself. The story in BotW is nowhere near as engaging or fleshed out as this is looking like it'll be.
@Euler She was adorable in post, too.
Though this design though. So cute. Love Purah. Snap.
@Ghostchip - As a fellow huge Kirby fan, I was kinda disappointed by Star Allies. I beat the whole story mode in the period of probably less than 6 hours, and that's with some generous rounding. The fact that you can make three helpers makes it incredibly easy to just storm through the levels, and it's impossible to finish them without making helpers... As in like they require you to make them to progress. It wasn't bad but I enjoyed Triple Deluxe and Super Star Ultra far better.
My point being, I think this would be a better purchase.
@yuwarite - Eh... Not necessarily. The presence of a few less serious characters doesn't imply an overall less serious story. This game is already plenty grim story premise-wise, if you think about it.
Personally, I'm happy to have good variety between characters' personalities.
@FlaviusFire I would still be ignoring it if it weren't for the dlc which looks great along with the harder arena
@FlaviusFire On paper, it's grim. But in execution, it's not. It's full of bubbly Anime tropes. Which I like, but not in the context of Zelda. It's like Twilight Princess, which promised to be a darker/grittier take on Zelda, but ended up being quite light and kiddy. TP is a great game, but didn't live up to the dark Zelda hopes conveyed in the E3 2004 trailer.
@Eel I believe that with Impa. (I love the fact that they didn't make the line that Paya looks like her when she was young a throwaway line...) However she is a warrior. Robbie and Purah are scientists ...Sheikah Scientists (TM) but still scientists... that height comes from years for slumping over a computer desk (I'm going to look like that myself at this rate...sits up straight). Robbie's spine collapsed. Purah at least has the "accidentally made myself a child" defense.
@Ryu_Niiyama An interesting detail about Robbie, at least in the latin american spanish version, is that they apparently used the same voice for the Sheikah warrior that comes to take Link to the shrine of resurrection in the memory where he faints.
So perhaps Robbie is completely capable of the ninja stuff as well!
But yeah, collapsed spine is very likely. That sheikah technology doesn't look particularly lightweight.
@Rhaoulos how about us playing with Kass mentor in this game?
@westman98 that too darker, even by Nintendo stadark how could a history can be, Nintendo is not Sony or Microsoft to create such darker story/plot element.
@YonVonBlett don't worry about that, Hyrule Warriors, was kinda of a celebration of the franchise before Zelda Breath of the Wild, unlike Hyrule Warriors:Age of Calamity that seen to indicate/be a completely canon take on the Great Calamity shown on the backstory of Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, if Nintendo don't show a darker and mature ending, showing almost everyone dying and Hyrule destroyed, i will not buy this game or ask someone to give this game in birthday in early april.
@Ricube maybe King Dorephan, showing the mention of him defeating a Guardian and how he gets it scars.
sadly it seens that the reveal of Robbie and Purah in Hyrule Warriors:Age of Calamity, betrayed my expectation this game could be the darkest e madure Legend of Zelda game yet, thanks Nintendo you crushed my dreams of seeying a darker and mature ending for this game, when almost everyone dying and Hyrule destroyed.
@Giancarlothomaz
Uhhhh...you do know what happens to the 4 champions, right?
@westman98 i know, but i fear Nintendo and Koei Tecmo is not gonna give us the darker and mature atmophere i expect for the Campions death, we need to feel Hyrule is doomed when they die.
Loved this trailer. I am hoping Adventure Mode is there as that was my favorite part of HW.
If only this wasn't POS musou garbage.
I love the new designs of Robbie and Purah. Was really hoping to finally meet them, and I am not disappointed.
@sinalefa - I'm playing through Adventure Mode for the 3rd time now, on my Switch copy. Finished Adventure Map, Great Sea Map, and now halfway through Master Quest, Master Wind Waker, and Twilight (for the 2x materials). Still a long ways to go!
@marandahir
Nice. I only got the original HW so I never played the other maps you mention. An insane amount of content.
@Teksetter I think the in-game voice settings will be determined by your Switch's own language settings if there is not an in-game option to change the voice tracks. I had a similar thought when I bought Breath of the Wild originally in 2017 and was surprised when even the Japanese cartridge I was using played in English (this was before they patched in the multilingual settings). Changing my system language to Japanese did the trick then, so don't cancel your preorder just yet.
I love they way they are modeled, they look really good. Sheikah seem to be very elegant. Oh we can really see how the BotW game engine looks on Switch since BotW was really a Wii U game.
Why couldn't this be the Botw dlc
I live in japan and played BOTW in Japanese and Robbie in the Japanese version is seriously so incredibly annoying like, i had to skip all of his dialogue.
@SpicyWolf
Whoa thank you for the input! Ya know the possibility that setting my system display to Japanese could actually cause some games to default to Japanese dialogue by themselves never occurred to me!
I will be sure to try that out in November, if need be.
I thought the cutscenes in BOTW were amazing, if short, and collecting Link’s memories was one of my favorite parts of the game.
I’d watch the scenes in Japanese and do my best running translation for my young daughters, so we all got into the story.
The trailers for AoC so far really invoke those feels, and I can’t wait for this game!
It’s been ages since I played a musou game, plus BOTW’s backstory is such a perfect fit for one. Aonuma-san or whoever at Nintendo or Koei Tecmo who came up with the idea is a certified genius.
@Teksetter I'm 100% with you there. Thought the cutscenes managed to wring out a lot of character details and world-building with minimal time. Many have argued that BoW's story was lacking, but I quite enjoyed being able to piece together what happened and who the champions were using the glimpses into the past rather than being spoon-fed. Agreed about the English voice track vs. Japanese. The difference is night and day - hopefully this will encourage the kids to pick up Japanese as well!
And yes, what they've shown so far has me hyped on all fronts! If I didn't know better, I would've said that they'd planned this type of prequel from the start.
@liljmoore Would you rather this not be a full game? 🧐
@TheFrenchiestFry It has such thing because it's not an open world where you can do anything on any order. That's why they can focus on story, it's more focused on linearity.
And even with the focus on its world, BOTW still had its own story to be told, plus diaries and lots of stuff for the world and characters.
@SpicyWolf
Yes totally! There seems to be this general complaint here in the West that BOTW lacked story, but I never felt that way.
My experience with the game left me appreciating the story we pieced together, although it was so dramatic and emotional I certainly wanted more of it! It rewarded those who took the time to collect up all the story snippets.
Now with this musou prequel and BOTW2 on the way, I can’t wait to see how the story is built upon.
AoC: Will King Rhoam himself join the battle to protect his daughter and save Hyrule in a valiant but doomed effort 100 years ago?
BOTW2: Will a new generation of 4 champions arise to help Zelda and Link stop Ganon once again?
Really excited to find out!
@Nemesis666 BOTW has a lot of supplementary components to its narrative, but the actual narrative and story is practically an afterthought in that game.
@Eel Interesting tidbit about the voice actors...I played in Japanese (hoping I can do so in this game too or I'm going to be very confused as far as voice association goes).
Explains his devotion to Cherry, that Siri knockoff broke his back. He's too scared to do otherwise.
@PoorGeno Oh... you must be another handsome boy grad.
@Jmjfrank @TeslaChippie @Giancarlothomaz thanks for the replies. That's what I hoped. I think I'll play this AoC first then, if I enjoy the warriors element, go back and get the first Hyrule Warriors. Really looking forward to this
@liljmoore Because it has a completely different gameplay style and mechanics.
In BotW fighting more than 3 enemies at a time can be a challenge, while the Warriors games are famous for having you fight hundreds of opponents at a time. BotW would simply break with that many opponents.
What you're asking for would be like making a Starcraft 2 RTS a DLC for LoL.
@SmaggTheSmug I didn't mean dynasty warrior style in Botw. Why couldn't we get the story like this as Dlc in Botw. Explore Hyrule 100 yrs before the events.
@liljmoore Because BotW is not about that. On that note I would love a strategy company making a game about the Hyrule Civil War.
@MS7000 Really? There were a ton of zany and unique characters. Even a lot of the villagers had unique designs. The only ones who didn't were the travelers and stable workers, and they didn't need crazy personalities
So they took the time to make Purah look like an older version of her younger self...
so why the heck didn't they do the same for Impa?!
@TheFrenchiestFry Yes, of course, I agree. My argument is more that to make the open world with the possibilty they wanted, they had to make the story in a way in which you could see it in any order with the memories, plus quests, diaries and so on. So basically exploring the world. I think that a more focused story can only come if they give less freedom, be it in an open world or a more linear zelda, and in that way, we lose a lot of the appeal of botw world and its freedom.
@kupocake You better believe it, Kupo!
Lol, they look really weird. Oh, and it looks like they use inky pens in Hyrule instead of quils!
