Nintendo's supported the phenomenally successful Animal Crossing: New Horizons with some excellent regional commercials, and it's following up this format with an ad that's exclusively aimed at the UK market.
The commercial – which is due to run on UK television networks from today – reinforces how the game can be used to keep friends together even when they're apart. We're shown a young girl whose family are moving home, taking her away from her group of friends. How do they overcome this problem? Via the wonders of Animal Crossing, of course.
While Sony and Microsoft have new hardware gobbling up the column inches at the close of 2020, Nintendo is using its preexisting titles like New Horizons to drive consumer interest during the holiday season, and it's working.
New Horizons has arguably been one of the most commercially successful video games of the year, and the Switch is set to shift impressive numbers over Christmas – despite being over three years old.

It's unfortunate that the multiplayer is kind of the weakest feature of the game.
Absolutely fantastic commercial though.
Man, I wish they had more multiplayer features.
Shame you have to buy separate online subscriptions if you share your console with siblings. Nonsense as now it’s one save file per profile, which means I can play online with my sister but my younger brother can’t. The online needs revamping.
If that is supposed to be a normal life, then I don't want it.
No "feels" here
Bought my two daughters a copy each for Xmas (they have lites). Looks like I'll be paying out for a NSO family subscription too! I've never played an AC game myself but I might give it a little go...
Katsuya Eguchi created the series as a response to missing family and wanting to feel connected to them.
For how much I love this game, online is rubbish and stupid hoops to jump through.
New leafs multiplayer was much better. They need to add some mini games
Lololol they forgot to put the required phone to be able to call and forgotton to show that you can talk ONLY with who os in the same island.... And for God sake the chat feature with friends!!!
@Donnerkebab Indeed it has a nice, clean Nintendo look to it.
It's a good ad that shows the multiplayer capabilities of the game in a way non-gamers can understand.
Shame the multiplayer is so lacklustre and relies on extra hardware and an app to provide basic MP features.
Not to mention that you need to buy extra consoles unless you want everyone in the household ransacking and undoing all of your hard work.
The advert really highlights how ridiculous it looks to use a mobile phone to chat, instead of it being done through the system.
65 year old Japanese Nintendo exec: "If they want to use voice chat, they can use their phones. We have to make voice chat weird and confusing to protect the children."
This is why they should add native voice chat, so you don't have to keep your phone right next to you.
That was very sweet. I've just bought the game digitally after finally letting go of New Leaf. It's half way downloaded so I'm looking forward to seeing what all the hype is about
@JMR_Alden I do hope you like it. New leaf was my favorite game until BotW, and now I think New Horizons is my favorite game. I have been playing almost everyday since launch. It is amazing.
The commercial is great. Yes, i understand the complaints about chat, and i agree. That said, this is still a GOTY contender and utterly phenomenal experience. It is an experience, not a game.
I watched the ad twice. It looks like it has voice chat because she talks to people, facing her console? This isn't true though, right?
@yuwarite If you buy your kids a phone, you can't blame Nintendo if your kids talk to people on it. I think it is a good idea. From the obscenities that have come out of my ps4, I can see the voice app is a way of keeping the brand child friendly.
Are they having to use their phones to do the voice chat, or is this happening through the app. If it's the former then that's just crap, seriously behind the times, and slightly misleading advertising too.
@Moistnado Yeah, that's basically the logic behind it. They put voice chat on a phone, externally from the console, as a means to not have the Switch be natively associated with voice chat related obscenities, and keep their brand child-friendly, like you said.
However, that's incredibly patronising to adult Switch gamers, who just want to play online with their friends, and use native voice chat, without the need to jump through hoops.
@yuwarite The phone app does look complicated. I use skype. It isn't patronising, if you know and understand the reason.
Probably the only person here who hasn't bought AC:NH yet. Seems fun but New Leaf wasn't for me and I don't want to spend $60 on a game I might not like. If Nintendo created a subscription service for some of their catalogue (a la Game Pass or PS Now) I think it could really help customers like me who are interested but on the fence about purchases.
@Moistnado It is patronising. It's lke they're treating every online user like a child. There are ways they could protect young players from hearing voice chat, perhaps through a bank authentication system, or other means that only adults would have access to.
It's so bad, it's basically worse than 2001 Xbox Live and 2005 PSP to some extent. Hopefully it gets better, but there's no need to make excuses for or defend it.
@yuwarite I am defending it. My ps4 puts me through to some dirty mouthed people, I don't want that kind of voice chat. Also young kids do not need to speak to strangers like this. Why would Nintendo damage their brand with this nonsense? Imagine a parent walking into their 4yr olds bedroom and hearing the trash talk teenagers spout on ps4. That 4yr old would never play switch again.
@Moistnado There are ways to circumvent children from hearing voice chat, especially now, since Nintendo Online is a paid service, which ostensibly means an adult with a credit card has paid control over it.
For example, in the Family Group settings, there could be an option, which disables voice chat for specific members of the family.
There are loads of ways to implement it correctly, instead of this lazy blanket wide approach - which, and I'm not joking, was literally put together by 65+ year old Nintendo executives, who have a boomer mentality towards online gaming and don't understand the Internet.
Does anyone know who the main actress is? She looks familiar, or looks like another person - but I can't place it, and it's driving me mad.
Those feels... one of the best ads for the game.
