The Nintendo 3DS may well be on its very last legs, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate the games which made it the fantastic console it was (and still is).
We've already looked at the top ten best-selling Switch games earlier today, but now it's time to turn our attention to its older cousin, the 3DS. As you might expect, there's an awful lot of Mario and Pokémon to be found here, with Mario Kart 7 taking pole position. To be clear, the list below shows the best-selling Nintendo-published 3DS games as of 30th June 2019; both physical and digital sales are included:

2) Pokémon X and Y - 16.40 million
3) Pokémon Sun and Moon - 16.16 million
4) Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire - 14.21 million

No game is going to come out of nowhere and sell 2 million copies or MORE to dethrone Mario Kart 7. That's just not gonna happen.
6 out of the 10
Wow...I guess the saying that 'the 3DS is just a Pokemon machine' was true for a lot of people. Although I never agreed with the statement, many people I knew only bought the 3DS for Pokemon and then let the system gather dust.
Real shame. 3D Land, the N64 Zeldas, Xenoblade, Awakening, Bravely Default, ET Undold...so many amazing games...
Yup, bought all of them over the past few years.
I'm not too surprised.
Feels a bit weird that not a single Zelda Game is in the Top 10 or even that close. Ocarina of Time ranks in at Nr. 15.
Impressive ! 😃
I have ALMOST All those Top 10 3DS games above. 😄
Except Smash Bros (No interest at all) 😐
& Pokemon Y + Moon + Ultra Sun (Haven't bought yet) 😅
I have half of these, although three of them were inherited since the console's previous owner gave it away along with his account among other things (shady and risky stuff, but time has proven his honesty, and the overall package with said other things was too good to ignore for its price). Well, the account in question also had a Tomodachi Life demo and I tried it, but never got around to buying the full version. Moon was one of my "release window" purchases - and those don't happen too often on my budget, mind you, - and Animal Crossing I got last year as one of the birthday discounts.
Was just looking at my hours played yesterday 😳 and that was only on my main 3DS 😅
Even one of the worst Mario Karts still sells like a Mario Kart.
@Dr_Corndog ????? MK7 is a classic
I haven't bought a single one of those...
@Dr_Corndog Had skipped MK7. What was so bad about it?
@Riderkicker The lack of a standard vs mode meant playing offline (on the go) meant you couldn't choose whatever track you wanted to play. Particularly annoying if your favourite track was at the end of a cup.
@DrLockdown Same thing happened with the DS and especially the GBA.
@Riderkicker As someone who liked MK7, it lacked a few features that would otherwise be series mainstays.
@Salnax Wouldn't be surprised if the same was happening with the Switch.
It's kinda stupid honestly.
Pokemon just continues to dominate on handhelds!
@Riderkicker I hate to say "bad." Just unexciting. I don't think there's really a BAD Mario Kart.
@Riderkicker Mario Kart 7 is a great game. If you like Mario Kart, you should pick up a copy.
@Heavyarms55 QUICK!!! EVERYBODY BUY 16.8 MILLION COPIES OF DRAGON QUEST 7: FRAGMENTS OF THE FORGOTTEN PAST
All the more proof that Nintendo needs to do more with Mario Kart. Technically we haven't had new Mario Kart courses since 2014. I love Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but most of us were under the impression it was a stop gap release with the launch of the Switch until a unique Switch entry was released. Now it's looking more and more like Mario Kart 9 won't be released on the current Switch but rather the Switch 2.
@USWITCH64 Worst one in the series easily.
The fact that Tomodachi Life is #10 gives me hope that a sequel for Switch will be made some day.
I quite enjoyed mk7 however I can see how it probably boosted its sales because everywhere I see a new 2ds or 2ds xl it’s included in with the system.
Either that or tomodachi life but I know what one I would have gone with.
@LinktotheFuture I probably would already have it if I had locals to race against. That & my job doesn't allow devices with cameras so playing my 3DS on my lunch break is out too.
@Riderkicker I understand, I don't have anyone to play with either. I did really enjoy playing it 1 player. There is a lot of stuff to unlock which kept me playing.
@DrLockdown Yeah, I see that all the time. It's been happening since Red and Blue came out. Nearly every time I see someone playing their Game Boy or 3DS, they're always, always playing Pokemon. lol
@Dev893 Oh good, someone else who hates the lightning cloud. That thing needs to go lay down
I have brought 5/10 of those games in the past then gave them to my mate when I got the switch on launch day with the rest of the 3DS collection
This list serves as a reminder that I need to give Animal Crossing: New Leaf a try at some point.
@sealoace DQ VII is still at a reasonable price on Amazon compared to the other 3/DS DQ games, so I picked it up recently. It's a buying experiment that I'd like to see.
I always found Mario Kart 7 really not good, I tried it a lot at a friend's but not possible, Mario Kart Wii is really immensely better in my opinion.
Mario Kart 8 on the other hand is really good, but the controls of 7 and the sensations... Ugh
Funny how every game is an nintendo first party game, if you want to count pogemanz as first party too.
Not a single one of my favorite games made the list. Well, I really liked Mario 3D Land actually, now that I think about it.
I've never understood the Pokemon craze. Not my cup of tea at all.
Mario Kart 7 is one of my least favorite MK games. Still fairly fun, but MK8 is far superior and I still prefer MK wii over MK7. Something about the items and the AI in 7 annoyed me. It felt like there was too much luck involved. It did have some cool tracks though.
I own them all except New SMB2, Pokemon Ultra and Tomadachi Life. A predictable list too. New SMB2 is a planned purchase once it goes cheap. Possibly Pokemon Ultra too.
Btw, MK7 is one of the great Mario Kart games. It would be my third behind MK DS and MK8D. Great tracks, handling, well balanced items, and only 8 karts in a race! Twelve karts can make it too chaotic, as was first seen with MK Wii. MK8 helped remove that by removing some of the dumb items (notably the Pow) and balancing the accessibility of them.
I own 9/10 of these games. I'm only missing UltraSun/Moon (that's mainly because I though Sun and Moon were a bit lacking so I held off of buying them)
nice go mario!
but still sad there isn't free racing mode when you can choose any map you want in the game.
tomodachi life is the only game on this list without a proper sequel announced / already out for switch. . .
