Last week, publisher FDG Entertainment held a sale for Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom to celebrate the game's first anniversary. It slashed the usual price of $39.99 / £34.99 in half for the first time ever.
It looks like it was well worth it as well. According to an update on Twitter, FDG said the game sold more copies on Switch during the sale period than the entire five months before that.
This isn't necessarily the first time Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom has enjoyed success on Nintendo's hybrid platform. At the start of this year, FDG described Switch sales as being in "another universe" and said the number of copies sold on the platform was eight times the amount of combined sales on other platforms.

Nice! I have this game and enjoy it. Hope more people try it out
yeah i mean 40 bucks is a bit much and the sales before this weren't great so a lot of people on the fence finally pulled the trigger at 50% off.
I was waiting for pay day.... even 50% off was out of my reach waiting for the next sale i guess
@KnightsTemplar That's not going to happen.
Glad it on sale wished those early buyer could get some refund for buying early.
I was one of em.
Wowie Uncle Bob you mean discounts appeal to people who are interested in a game? Gee whiz as the kids say!
That should clue them in that the price is higher than the market wants to pay. I get keeping the lights on and paying bills but you have to balance that line or it doesn’t benefit you. I know I passed on this game due the price and by the time I had enough on my account to afford it I bought multiple cheaper but great quality games instead. Sadly this sale was after Black Friday as far as I saw and after buying about 30 games across multiple platforms I am going to be busy for a while. Maybe later if they put it to this price again.
It should be $20 regular price before the sale.
@SwitchForce yes it will. If it had this much success it will go on sale again...
Well doubt it sold all that much at $40... so unless they give the actual sale number - this means little.
Glad I waited for the sale. Really should not be more than $19 - maybe $29 max.
I got it during the sale but have been too busy at work to start it. I can't wait to spend time with it soon!
I’m proud to have contributed to that spike in sales. 😉
Nice! I actually have it on my Christmas list so if I don’t get it I’ll grab it on the last day of the sale on the 25th.
Bought it during the sale and am loving it. It feels a lot like a side scrolling Zelda, which isn't how I felt about the last one. (Though I liked it too, this one is much more fun so far!)
Wellllll duhhhhhhh.
And it's an awesome game. It's a must-play game for me.
@SwitchForce You wish early adopters got a refund... for what? They got to play the game several months earlier than those of us who waited for a sale. The early adopter is pretty much always going to end up paying more.
The amount of people in here that think a fully fleshed out and beautiful looking Wonder Boy sequel should sell at rock bottom indie game prices is astounding. You got the game at half off and some of you still complain its too much. Seriously, ya that broke or something?
Utterly Ridiculous.....
I bought a launch copy at full price and two of the $15 digital copies on Steam for friends. Now a couple more people can enjoy the game, and they won't complain about it.
Switch is a great system for 2D platformers possibly the best since the 16-bit era and Nintendo should really be taking advantage of this, so far we’ve only gotten Mario Maker 2 and Yoshi as original 2D platformers from them.
That's such a great classic, it's great that it sold better on Switch.
While I don't think it should be a race to the bottom for pricing, this shows that the game was likely set at too high a price to appeal to all but the most interested buyers upon release. Of course many publishers only set a high initial price in order to have plenty of wiggle room for price cuts later in the product's life.
Not saying it’s not worth $40, but I was never going to pay that. I’m definitely picking the game up for $20 tho. It’s been a long wait lol
Maybe it's the markets way of saying something.
Not surprised it’s kinda pricy to start with
Seeems to me that's clear evidence that they priced it wrong to begin with.
Bought it because of the discount as well! Dragon's Trap on PS4 too, so I have to play that first. After that, this gets my attention.
Who'd have thought a huge price cut would increase sales?
still got to give the demo a try before i decide if its for me. not sure I'm keen on the art style but have heard it's a pretty good game
Well it was too expensive to begin with.
Edit: Some wonderful games that you could get for half that or less, even wighout a sale: Celeste, Katana Zero, Undertale, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, Owlboy, the Messenger, Fast RMX, Dust: an Elysian Tail, Action Squad, etc.
No wonder it didn't sell too well.
Because 20 is a fair price for this game. 40 is just too much... It's a great game, that's for sure, but come on... Hollow Knight is also great and is just 15, Cuphead is also great and is just 20. They should keep this game at 20 forever.
There was no way I was paying $40 to take a gamble on that game when similar games are $20 and under.
I mean yeah, I've said it before. 20$ is a much better price in the current indie landscape, 40$ is really, really pushing things.
I downloaded the demo the other night and played it for about an hour. I really didn't get why NL gave it 9/10.
Admittedly, I didn't play it for long, but it just felt very clunky and dull, especially when compared to other great platformers on the Switch.
Congrats to them!
I wish the physical edition had been 50% off too, still looking to get hold of that.
@tricksterdoom It DEFINITELY deserves a 9/10. You just didn´t play it enough, I believe.
@the_beaver Maybe i'll give it another go. Did you find the movement to be a little sluggish/underwhelming? Maybe it just seemed a bit slow having been playing a lot of Celeste and Hollow Knight.
Been on my wish list for quite a while. Grabbed it finally.
@tricksterdoom Maybe at the beginning, but you get used to it quickly. And in general it´s a fantastic game, really really enjoyable.
@TurboTEF You just summed up the issue perfectly. They want $39.99 to purchase on the Switch, but sell the exact same game for $29.99 on Steam (on sale for $14.99 currently). There is zero excuse for a digital game to cost more on Switch.
I've always said that this game just missed the mark on price point. I made a long post on the switch subreddit basically stating that if they cut the price in half, they would sell 10x the number of copies. My hyperbolic estimate wasn't that far off.
I bought the game on sale (not this 50% off, but maybe @ 25% off a while back?). It's a great game that imo is actually worth $40 considering the production quality, graphics, sound, gameplay, level design, quantity of content, etc., but that doesn't mean it should be priced at $40 in order to be a profitable venture.
@tricksterdoom I haven't got around to playing Monster Boy yet but have heard it's not so good at the beginning but soon picks up and is really fun. After reading your comments though will make sure I play it before Hollow Knight or Celeste.
Was waiting for Monster Boy to come down in price as I have a backlog anyway. There's a lot of competition out there.
@TurboTEF It's worth what people are willing to pay. With so much competition in indie games, so many excellent games regularly priced around $20, obviously a lot of people thought $40 was too high for a game like this.
I've had this game on my radar for a long time. I'll probably pick it up at this price. Call me cheap if you want but there are so many games to choose from; publishers need to be careful about price point if they expect to be competitive. Stating the obvious here, but it's a lot better to sell tens of thousands of copies at $20 than a few thousand copies at $40. By the way I don't think $20 is rock bottom basement price. That would be $10 or less.
game never should have been 40 bucks in the first place. but incredible game, if you haven't played it, you should!
@TurboTEF Are you saying that Cuphead or Ori, for example, should be much more expensive?
Come on man, this game should cost 25 at most.
Monster Boy is a very good game. I played it to 100% completion.
Me too. So far I like it. Though I found 20 Euro still a bit steep.
It was an over priced game.
Bought it at $50 upon release. It's exactly what I needed and could not be any more happy with my purchase. Completely worth it in my opinion.
First I bought the retail version for Switch and PS4. Last night I grabbed a digital copy on the Xbox one. A Switch digital purchase is next!! Love me the retro stuff! Frogger tomorrow!! 😁
I bought this when it first came out. I was actually in a game drought or wanted a Shantea like game. I paid full price for it. It was not worth $40 but is a great game. I played the heck out of the one that first came out during the switch launch. This game is platform gold. It is worth $24 max.
You know you're asking too much for your game when...
Of course! That being said it was still pretty expensive, but luckily its a very good game.
