A Nintendo Switch can easily be your best friend if you have to hop on one of those aeroplanes people use to travel long distances through the air, as we're no doubt so many of you reading already know first-hand. But what if you don't own one? How are you supposed to enjoy the benefits of playing DOOM at 33,000 feet on a 7W beast of a console?
Nintendo and Southwest seem to have an answer to that, and it's little more than just handing them out to people along with a copy of Super Mario Maker 2 for absolutely nothing, although admittedly people received their consoles after the flight had landed, slightly taking the edge off the magic. Having said that we certainly wouldn't grumble if we were handed a $300 bit of kit, regardless of whether it was during or after a commercial flight.
Suffice to say this is all no doubt to drum up publicity and is not going to be a mainstay of Southwest flights for years to come. Well, it worked, because look at us talking about it here, and you reading it. It's all a rich tapestry.
What would you do if a multi-billion dollar airline offered you a Nintendo console that you may already own? Explain to us it all in great detail through the medium of that lovely comments section.

King Alex Olney?
@Franklin Don't forget it 👑
All hail King Alex Olney! 🙇♀️
Didn't something like this happen with the 3ds version of Mario maker?
Well new model coming soon, so they have to get rid of the old stock
Can't market a PS or Xbox so easily can ya!
Really nice move, through it probably lost Nintendo more money than they earned!
WHY DOES THIS STUFF NEVER HAPPEN TO ME?! And I would totally give a second Switch to my friend's wife. She really wants one, but they can't afford it.
@Nekonokatzen
Please keep us updated on the saga of your friend's wife.
@Noid Oh really? Marketing begs to differ.
@Timsworld2 What an unnecessary dig on a completely unrelated article haha
Old model, gutted.
@frabbit Yeah, it's people like that that make these comment sections unbearable at times. Almost all of his comment history is negative, attacking people and staff to make himself feel superior, or calling Nintendo fans on a Nintendo Fan site "sheeple". A good one to add to the ignore list.
Getting rid of the old stock before releasing the upgrade, but I wouldn't of minded a spare.
Awesome move.. or flight!
That’s one way to encourage people to fly with them... if they’ve done it once, they may do it again...
Free Nintendo Switch with every nose dive into the ground.
Thank you Boeing!
Good marketing.
If only it happened on the rails too
To many's undoubted chagrin, "random" tag fits the news in more ways than one. But congrats to those on board at the time, what else to say?
@Timsworld2 A valid critique maybe, but misplaced. The "King" thing is clearly a joke. I don't even know what the mistake was in the other article, but it seems pointless to bring it up in this one, does it not?
Also, I don't think I've flipped out, or twisted anything at all.
Is there something wrong with the quality of this article in your opinion? If not, what's the basis of your "quality over quantity" comment?
lucky them! the sort of thing that has never happened to me but good publicity stunt! thats how its done!
When did Alex become King?
You know that an article was posted by King @AlexOlney when the tagline is "lucky sods"
@Retron If they'd have given it out at the start of the flight, all the batteries would be dead. You only get around 3 hours. Not very good publicity!
@gaga64 He's the only staff member working on the site today. Therefore, he is our one and only King.
I can imagine all the boring adults and parents on the flight who don’t care about games. They don’t deserve one.
Leave it to some NL commenters to somehow sour a fun little story with unnecessary negativity. Without fail...
That's crazy. Was Oprah on that flight? You get a Switch, and you get a Switch...
@UmbreonsPapa Some people are only happy when they're crying. Funny though, I remember we had a poster not long ago who used to nitpick the articles and whine about how their country is being neglected, derail threads, sob uncontrollably about Nintendo robbing them, pro Wii U, he got banned in the end. Twice.
I think they'd be a perfect match for each other...
....Oh great, he's calling himself a king now.
Flew recently. I have a fear of flying. Switch took the edge off.
@gloom Who do you think pays for these systems?
Who do you think is buying the majority. This boring parent spends more a month on gaming than most young people. That's what happens when you grow up and have money.
When I fly, I game. But flying commercial still sucks. Unless you're insanely wealthy and can afford first class, the seats are small, the food is 17 months out of date and there is always at least one sick person or crying baby.
All hail the king! Long may he reign in YouTube videos!
That would have been an awesome flight to be on. Hope those people keep them and instead of hocking them on eBay lol.
@Franklin lol such a great comment (referring to #11)
I'm sure the news will travel to some, but imagine how many people on this flight will sell them on eBay or whatever. "Brand new Nintendo Switch with Mario Maker game". All the salty people that were on a different flight that day as well, maybe they would have actually wanted one but decided to hold out after this. Sure, it will gwt in gaming new sites but will see a minor story on local ones and nothing national. Don't really think it was worth their time.
I wonder how many immediately went on eBay! Unlikely to be a flight full of gamers, and anyone who was probably owned one anyway. I wouldn't mind a free one either...
Why in the world would they wait till the end of the flight?!? What better way to get people into it then give it away at the beginning of a long flight and let them play for the next several hours
“The passengers were then charged 34.99+tax for the extra baggage.”
Dang! I just flew with them last night and the night before... no Switch for me
@StevenG I’m not talking about you, fellow gamer. I’m talking about a lot of parents I know that don’t let their children play video games.
@WiltonRoots I wonder who that might have been 😉
Meanwhile I'm lucky if I get a cup of water or some juice...
Can easyJet do this in October? They're low-cost like Southwest!
I'm surprised that everybody here is being so civil and not fighting to the death to become Alex's queen.
leaves can of worms unattended and wriggles away quietly
@Jayofmaya yeah, seems like a strange, and not very effective promotion. I'm sure a good percentage of the passengers on that flight have no interest in the switch.
This is just Nintendo's way of getting rid of the older Switch models so they could replace it with the longer battery life models that are launching this August. Don't worry guys we will get the better model over these people.
@Timsworld2 please tone it down with the bitterness, it’s clearly bothering other users.
It's never when I fly. oh well, enjoy lucky people!!!!
@frogopus I like when people pull up with the receipts
@frogopus Nicely played.
@frogopus Holy cow. Thanks for the heads up. Ignore list, it is.
@gloom I don't let my kid play video games. He is 5, that's too young for lots of screen time.
@StevenG Oh, cool.
That's extremely cool. Even if it was after they landed, there's a good chance some passengers had a layover.
I also wouldn't care if it's a first-gen model; that's what AC outlets and the AC adapter are for. lol
ggggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good for them. Seriously.
@Iacobus But the more you recharge a battery the more you're shortening it's lifespan as constant recharging of battery could lead to potential damage to the battery. The longer battery life in the newer model will prevent this from happening. I own a GBA SP frontlit model for 6 years and on the 7th year the battery stopped charging I had to eventually buy a new one just to had to charge again and those new third party ones don't last as long as the Nintendo ones either. The first third party ones lasted a year and a half and the second one lasted 3 years and that's only because I hadn't play it as much.
Longer battery lifespan is very important and the less you charge a battery the better otherwise saying you could always leave it recharge through an AC outlet ain't gonna help in the long run. Constant recharging harm your battery lifespan more so than you think. Having longer battery life is a blessing on the new models.
@retro_player_22 Mmm...but we're talking thousands of charges before most of us have decided to move on. Six years is some time, especially for mobile electronics. The Switch is almost three years old (since launch). I can guarantee we're going to have a successor before six years.
Granted, anyone that's into collecting or wanting to keep and maintain their systems isn't going to have a fun time but that's the nature of the beast.
Figures. The last time I flew on Southwest a few months ago, I was only offered a drink and pretzels.
All joking aside, this is a good way to promote the system. This also isn't the first time that Nintendo and Southwest Airlines have partnered up on something like this.
@Timsworld2 Sorry, Mr. Editor in Chief. I apologize for all my peers down here for our inappropriate behavior. You're just trying to do your job which is to make sure all NLife writers are quality checked. What would we do without your expertise? I mean, any more know-how and you'd basically be working in the journalism industry!
@Timsworld2 stop or go somewhere else.
@Morpheel You show 'em!
Lol looking at this thread you got people using incendiary posts and moderators telling people to do one too, and then others pulling up the entire history of ones posts 🤣 don’t think it gets much sadder then this lol
Your adults, stop getting so offended with everything, if you don’t like someone block their posts, if you don’t like the moderators then don’t support the site....it’s not that difficult.
Life’s too short for you all to be such emotional drama queens.
That's so nice & smart. If i had got that free switch i would give it to my brother or cousin since i already have mine. Marketing! Marketing!! Marketing!!!
@commentlife That sounds like the sort of thing Ryanair would do!
Well, the people that got it can always play it there and on the flight back home.
@retro_player_22 The hypocrisy of the sociopath comment where he tells them they should die... The hypocrisy of him calling others hypocrites. Amazing. Lol How do people like this wake up and get out of bed day to day?
Wow, and I used to think the peanuts were awesome!
@frogopus And Timsworld has gone. What a shame.
