Last week, we heard how the new standard Nintendo Switch with improved battery life was already on sale in certain countries. Now, the fine folks over at GameXplain have got their hands on one of these new models.
Of course, when you get a new system, there's only one thing to do: an unboxing video on YouTube! In this 10-minute clip, you'll get a closer look at the packaging, what exactly you get inside of this glorious red box and a better look at the system itself.
If you haven't kept up with recent developments, this new standard Switch is believed to increase the current Switch's 2.5 - 6.5 hour battery life to 4.5 - 9 hours. It's also running an updated 'Mariko' version of the Tegra X1 chip, that's said to be included in the upcoming Switch Lite. Nintendo isn't expected to announce the sale of these new systems, so in-store, you'll just have to keep an eye out for the new packaging.
Have you considered trading in your old Switch for this latest model? Are you holding out for a Lite? Tell us below.

Don't temp me. LOL
Man, I really want that battery life...
@DAHstroy Same here. I'm probably not going to upgrade but having that extra battery life would make trips a lot better for me. I can always use a portable battery but not having to carry that around would be nice.
Hate to hate, but why do we need an unboxing video for this? It's not like there's something special about the packaging besides the outside...
Better battery life and cooler running are major improvements. I don't know if I'd upgrade just for them, but since I have need of a second Switch for my daughter I will probably upgrade to this and pass my old Switch down to her.
I was going to get her a Lite, but this new model is pretty damn appealing. Our Switch travels a lot.
@J-Plap I was thinking the same. I didn't bother watching the video but doesn't it look identical to the older switch and come with the exact same accessories? The only difference is the box right?
It's tempting. If we do a profile transfer from one Switch to another, is it as simple as taking the SD card out of one and putting it into the other? Or am I gonna have to spend hours redownloading everything?
If I decide to buy it. Which I probably wont... but maybe.
Oh and if I did, I wouldn't sell my current Switch. I don't sell games or consoles anymore. I learned years ago I always end up regretting it.
No interest in the Lite and not worth side-stepping my launch Switch for a few extra hours of battery. Will keep waiting for another revision next year.
Incredible. I love it.
I'll upgrade my almost 3 year-old Switch whenever the "Pro" or another limited edition switch (I was almost going to get the Pokemon Eevee and Pikachu).
But it's great if something ever happens to my switch, which I pray nothing will.
Yea everything's the same @teko except the outer box art and some minor rearrangement of the things in the box.
Cool video, always love their content. Going to try to hold out until the holidays to get the new "normal" switch to see what deals they have.
I hate to be a console racist, but it looks the exact same as the old model.
I think I'll keep my old Switch and wait for a "pro" instead.
@Quarth Yeah if you want an upgrade you would be a fool to go for this early update unless you really don't care about springing for it.
Both the main unit and the JoyCons got a new revision in this release. And the Switch got more than just a Tegra update (some boar dlayout changes, etc). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6DJQhoh6Ho
I didnโt even bother watching, itโs the same exact system we already have...I was more curious to read everyoneโs comments.
I donโt ride the train or travel for work so I have zero problems/complaints with the battery life as is.
In a way this is a double edged sword for me. I really wanted a Switch Pro announced, but at the same time with this coming out it saved me $300 +tax because it would be a complete waste of money for my needs that are 100% already met with the standard model.
Iโm waiting for the Holiday 2020 Switch Pro bundle w/Super Mario 64 & Wave Race 64 Remastered. ๐ ๐
Enjoy 6 hours of drifting on one charge, thank you Nintendo, it really is better than ever!
@Heavyarms55 I'm half tempted but at the same time I don't know if I can bothered reapplying a screen protector to a new switch.
I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and getting a powerbank to extend the playing time.
Just gonna wait for a Switch Pro. Although a longer battery is great, I wonโt spend another $300 on another Switch just for a better battery. Just gonna use a portable Switch charger in the meantime.
@DAHstroy It REALLY is tempting.
Even moreso when you think the console might perhaps even run cooler as a result.
@N00BiSH That was.... the point?
There's reasons they didn't even change the name. This "new" model is technically the same old one.
The only reason it's "new" is because they installed a new chip.
But it was very much less a case of wanting to install the new chip than simply the fact they "had" to if they wanted to continue making "this" model of the Switch... because the supplier of the chip for the original Switch was about to decomission the original chip model in favor of this one.
Part of it could be thought that it's because of the improvements(i.e.: longer battery life and likely running cooler while maintaining the same performances) but ultimately it's for a much simpler reason: the specific production process that made these improvement possible.... also made the newer chip cheaper to produce than the original.
So... better battery life, same performances, likely run cooler but (more importantly) also cheaper to produce?
The older chip was fated to eventually get discontinued so they revised the base Switch model to be made using the new chip because that's the only way they can keep continue making it.
Basically the main reason there's no changes to the name of the console.
@Dunan I have a power bank, works great! But it is one more thing to throw in the bag.
@Ludovsky .
bubby.
you gotta understand.
i just made a really lame joke.
On it.
Dragon Quest XI S Limited Edition Switch is on preorder. And I canโt wait! Gave me the perfect excuse to jump on the DQ Switch.
"new standard Switch is believed to increase the current Switch's 2.5 - 6.5 hour battery life to 4.5 - 9 hours. It's also running an updated 'Mariko' version of the Tegra X1 chip"
Why mislead people and make it sound like Nintendo did something separate specifically to increase battery life? It is increased BECAUSE of the new chip as a bonus.
Telling the truth plain and simple is always better:
"new standard Switch is running an updated 'Mariko' version of the Tegra X1 chip. One of the side benefits of that is, this will increase the current Switch's 2.5 - 6.5 hour battery life to 4.5 - 9 hours. "
As others already pointed out here and in other communities, the change to the updated chip is due to it being the new in-production model, that's it. AND, the old one has a hardware flaw that made it hackable and Nintendo is of course happy to get rid of that problem.
@Heavyarms55 Lol same here... I sold my SNES back in the day on a flea market for maybe 200โฌ including 10-15 games, just to be able to buy a mod chip for my PS1... Oh sooo naive... Will never do that again!
Nintendo chose battery over speed here.
The new 14nm process enabled the new Tegra chip to run cooler. That's why battery last longer. Nintendo can easily increased the clock speed to make it run faster but will reduced battery life to that of the original Switch. Naturally they won't do that, in order to match the current standard speed for parity.
Homebrewers will have a lot of fun with this new revision.
@mazzel Yup, I've been kicking myself for years for selling my copy for Fire Emblem Path of Radience on Gamecube. I sold and rebought a PS3. Same with N64. Wish I never sold my PS2 but just having gotten around to rebuying one... just to name a few things.
@gamekill some are reporting marginal performance improvements
@Heavyarms55 I thought it was going to be that simple tonight but the new Switch made me format the SD card and redownload the games. Granted, this account transfer was done without the original Switch system as I traded that for this new one. Kind of a pain though.
@onesidezero8581 The Switch encrypts the data on the SD card. So without a system transfer (from the original) you can't use the data on the SD card.
@Heavyarms55 Damn, sound alls too familiar I kept my old PS1 (yeah, the one I traded my SNES for...) and also the PS2! I had the first Xbox one, but itยดs lost (donยดt ask me how...)...
I will never sell my Wii and my Switch for sure! Even if I upgrade to any potential Switch Pro, I will keep the first one!
kinda of a waste to make another remaster switch that only has like one change to it.
@mazzel I've actually got a small pile of 3DS at this point. My original 3DS that I played until the A button wore out, the XL I bought just before they announced the New 3DS, the New 3DS XL I bought right after, and then the rare normal size NA New 3DS and a Japanese New 3DS. In hindsight, I went a little nuts. But it's kinda cool nonetheless. Never selling any of them.
Errr doesnโt it look exactly the same?
I have the Dragon Quest XI Switch pre-ordered from Japan. I'm so glad that will be one of the updated versions with the improvements to the battery life. Getting a limited edition system that's also an upgrade over my launch edition feels win-win. Gonna keep my original as a back up.
@Mr_Persona That's not the point though. It's not "making a new system", it's releasing an updated version with improvements. I don't think the Switch is suddenly going to see a big boost in sales because of this. It's more of Nintendo trying to improve things.
@Deanster101 It does. All changes are internal. I do would like to see a comparison of the main boards of both models though.
Wow, look........................it's exactly the same as the other one.
What was the point in this video?
@Mr_Persona all consoles change through the lifecycle of the machine due to cost savings, production improvements and even due to regulation changes.
I read an article about how different models of the SNES yellow differently over time due to the amount of boron or some other chemical in the plastic which was later banned.
Definitely not worth upgrading to this revision if you already have a Switch, unless you have more money than sense, but for anyone buying a new one or a replacement I think we'd all take extra battery life for free.
@Bunkerneath ยฃ$โฌ for the guy who posted it
@Heavyarms55 That's true. it's speculative at the moment but I wonder if there's any subtle performance improvements for games.
Is the main advantage for Nintendo that these can't easily be jailbroken?
Have they fixed the USB C implementation so that they are less likely to be bricked by third-party USB C chargers?
@Bunkerneath Views / clicks, ofcourse. Like any YT-video. Or Nintendolife article. Or.. well you get the point.
might not consider buying a new one until a couple of months. i wanna see if people still have issue with joycon drift, cause people have said they joycons feel slightly different
I'm tempted, as I don't have a Switch yet, but if a Pro model really is still coming out, I think I can wait for that, as long as it releases in time for BotW2.
Oh gosh, "old Switch in new box" is going to be a big problem on eBay, I just know it >_<
Does the dock now have padding or rubber inserts to stop scratches? If not that's not an improvement even if the console has a longer battery life.
As much as Iโd love the extra battery life, Iโllw Air and see if either a more powerful Switch or a special edition i want is released and use that as the excuse to upgrade.
Yep. Thatโs a Switch alright. GX and Commonwealth Realms do too many clickbaity type videos for me, but happy for those who like it.
This video is pointless in my opinion, it's exactly unboxing and nothing else. I wasted 10 minutes. The commentary is completely superficial and he doesn't even check anything in detail.
Utter rubbish, the guy does not even know if there's a difference as he's got no reference material.
Also thinks that the red joy cons are a Japan exclusive?
@Heavyarms55 I actually have this in small scale for the game boy, but only because I took all the game boys in out household once everyone stopped playing it. I have two original grey ones (my and my brothers), the original one in black (my mothers) and a purple game boy color (my sisters). I started to mod them with background light's recently
If you had told me 20 years ago that one day people would purposefully watch each other open things for entertainment, I'd have directed you to our holiday home videos collecting dust on a shelf
Is it known whether or not the bending, cracking switches, and warped docks have been ironed out in manufacturing yet?
I wonder if it'll make the current (launch) model ones cheaper to buy now? it makes sense now to do Nintendo Switch with e-shop vouchers now, to sell off old stock.
I edited my comments
@TempOr how will you get away with it? surely they will check the contents?
About to head to the store now to see if they have any. I mean why not pick up the new one. I want a second dock and if the old ones joy cons start to drift I would have to buy a new set. Just those 2 things alone will run you $160.
@sanderev I dunno if this is allowed but you might find this interesting.

Can we trade in our old Switches for a 70 percent discount please on the new one lol?
i may of missed it elsewhere... but this seems to be the first time ive seen a upgraded tegra chip in the new switch. anyone know anything about it? strictly more energy efficient? better performance?
@mazzel Nice! I have one of the original grey brick, my personal original green Game Boy Color, a half played to death platinum GBA (the A button is barely functional), a much more recent modded GBA with a glass screen and backlight, and two of the original GBA SP(mine and my father's) too. I want to pick up a Game Boy Light (the old frontlit Game Boy Pocket exclusive to Japan) but it's actually pretty expensive even in Japan itself.
@Heavyarms55 now I'm wondering if the current gen hatdware will ever last that long... Just considering the battery should answer that question with "No!".
On the other hand, spare parts are much more easy to get compared to some years before (hey, thanks China ) and youtube has all the repair guides I need. Looks like the future is brighter then I thought
@mazzel I'm sure if it becomes needed, replacement batteries will be sold. It's not really that hard to replace with just a little know how. But because of the type of battery used, you need to be careful doing it.
Nintendo probably made it this way as a form of child proofing / idiot proofing.
I had to get the powerbank out in the train yesterday... which is a pain. I'll still wait for a New Switch XL Deluxe Advance to replace mine.
That is the 1 I want
any release date ?
even Amazon does not show any new reference
I just picked up a โnewโ Mariko chip switch after loving my original for over two years and I have to say it is noticeably better in every way and it is a tremendous amount better in several ways! I Love my Nintendo Switch!! It is worth buying the revision! Several of My Games including Blood Stained and Mortal Kombat 11 run even better on my โnewโ switch. It is much more than a simple battery upgrade. That is misleading! Enjoy Switch Gaming everyone!! -Patrick ๐๐๐ป ๐ฎ
