Re: Random: Switch Owners Are Discovering Just How Frustrating Super Mario Sunshine Can Be

speedyb

I actually think Sunshine fares better in this compilation than the original GC release. The controls seem less frustrating- removing the inverted controls while in close mode helps a ton- and the widescreen/higher res display allows the game to look better than ever. Plus in retrospect I'm able to appreciate the different level styles than what we usually see from Mario games (desert, ice, fire, snow, forest, etc.).

The game is still far from perfect- the platforming can be frustrating at times and some of the missions still aren't very fun- but I definitely like the game overall more now than when I first played it.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Four More Titles

@MadmanMike You have to enable music in the options menu; it's set to background sound effects by default. It's really stupid. EDIT: I see a couple people already brought this up. I'm too slow.

The Japanese version is way better- for one thing it has more music and it's a lot more invigorating than the small handful in the U.S. version. A shame that version couldn't have gone on the service instead.

For once, I say the Japanese cover is the worst. The main characters are shrunk and squished off to the bottom right. It's a tie between the American art, which is really well-drawn, and the European, which still has elements of the original Japanese art style but has better composition than the Japanese cover.

Re: Soapbox: 25 Years On, I Still Can't Get Into Yoshi's Island

speedyb

My only issue with Yoshi's Island (besides crying Mario of course) is the large amount of instances where you get one chance on something and if you mess up, you have to restart the level if you want 100%. The biggest culprits are the Fly Guys holding the red coins and one-way doors, but there are other things as well. There's nothing worse than getting to the end level ring, checking your status, and going, "What did I possibly miss? Oh, I can't go back and find it? AUGH." Alternatively, getting hit once in a boss battle and being just shy of max health, making everything else done perfectly in the castle level pointless.

Other than that, I love the first game and it's definitely in my top 20 SNES games.

I had the strangest bug while playing this: Weird red lines. A few times the lines corrupted the picture to the point where the screen went black but the sound could still be heard. And it can't be a HDMI cable going bad, because this is literally the only game where I've experienced this, and I was still able to press the home button and get back to the Switch menu. I got this bug mostly in Kelp Forest for some reason.

Please tell me this bug was fixed with this patch.

Re: Looks Like Bandai Namco Is Bringing Its Retro Collection To The West As Namco Museum Archives

I swear, Namco has to be one of the worst companies in terms of double dips. The majority of these have already been released tons of times over, but then they throw in a few exclusives (Battle City, Mendel Palace, Legacy of the Wizard, etc.) to get people to buy yet another compilation.

I think the fact that there's a whole Wikipedia article about Namco Museum and the amount of times they've re-released their arcade games sums it up.

Re: Mortal Kombat News Is Coming, New Reveal Planned For Tomorrow

I'm looking forward to the next season of MK11... I just hope I have enough HD space for it on my PS4. That's the thing about modern games- I don't mind updates after launch because it extends the replay value but I never know how much free space to reserve for the inevitable add-ons.

Re: Fancy A Passionate Tryst On Switch? Get Involved With Catherine: Full Body This July

I didn't really care for the game when I played it on PS4. The puzzle sections are enjoyable and innovative but they're sandwiched between REALLY long cutscenes, so most of the time it feels like you're just watching a movie. And it's one of those games where one or two decisions can affect whether you get a good or bad ending, which I'm not a fan of.

Also felt the traditionally-animated cutscenes were a missed opportunity- most of the cutscenes are rendered in the game's engine instead.

Re: Bonus Seasonal Content Is On The Way To Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled

speedyb

I love that we keep getting new courses, it adds to the replay value of the game. That they're free is even better.

Unlocking the new characters/skins/karts by grinding is another story. In the last three Grand Prix, the first unlockable is usually easy enough to get, but the other unlockables take a LOT of grinding by doing repetitive challenges, like playing 12 laps of one course (really?) or online challenges which I can't even do since I don't have a PS Plus account.

I love the game but I wish there was a better way to unlock stuff. And I don't mean buying it in real money either.

Re: Review: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled - A Karting Treat For Fans And Newcomers Alike

speedyb

Bought the game for PS4 last week. Being that CTR is one of my all-time favorite games (yes, I like it more than Mario Kart), I'm glad Beenox did it justice. It's still a lot of fun to play, and good on them to include the Nitro Kart tracks as a bonus, plus more unlockable characters than the original.

Is it perfect? No, the flaws have already been listed here, but none of them detract from the overall product IMO.

Re: One Mortal Kombat 11 Developer Had To See A Therapist After Violent Dreams

speedyb

To those saying "They knew what they were getting into, no sympathy", I don't think the animators expected that they'd be watching real life violence every day as research for the game. The violence in the game probably isn't what is causing the PTSD, it's the research into making it.

It's no different than people who sign up as Facebook or Twitter content monitors and become severely depressed/suicidal because in the process of removing graphic content from the servers, they're subjected to some of the most vile material over and over.

I haven't played MK 11 yet (bought but haven't gotten around to it) but hearing this story kinda sours me a bit.

Re: Guide: Where To Pre-Order Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Mini

speedyb

While the full game list hasn't been announced yet, it's likely going to have a lot of the same games that have been re-released endlessly on the various Sega game compilations (Sonic Mega Collection+, Sega Genesis Collection, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Sega Genesis Classics, Sega Genesis Flashback). Unless it has something REALLY good that isn't available on any of those, pass.

Re: Hardware Review: Hyperkin Supa Retron HD: Time To Dust Off Those SNES Carts

speedyb

I got a Supa Retron HD a week ago. Mostly I'm satisfied with the purchase, as the picture quality is good, the controllers are a lot better than the default one bundled with the Retron 5, and the addition of an eject button is most welcome.

My only real complaint is that the Hyperkin logo is forced to show OVER the game's startup sequence. For some games, where the music starts playing immediately after startup, it's incredibly vexing to have the Hyperkin logo override it for a few seconds. Thankfully the Hyperkin logo doesn't appear if you reset the game, but I shouldn't have to do that to get the proper startup.

EDIT: Re: the aspect ratio: There is a switch on the back of the console that allows you to toggle between its proper 4x3 and stretched. I'm glad the option was given, though I doubt I'll be using stretched ever.
