Not at all interested in the Genesis service- unless there are some surprises down the line, those games have been released a LOT, but the N64 one is promising- already on launch I would play Sin & Punishment, Winback and Mario Tennis, and of course it would give me another excuse to play through Super Mario 64 for the umpteenth time. I just hope the NES and SNES aren't neglected now that there are new systems in the mix.
I did a double take when I read the headline. That's way too overpriced for the amount of content you get. A shame, I was hoping to get HDMI versions of a few of the SI titles previously featured on Taito Legends.
Yeah, I'd have to agree with many here... I played through it last night and it was a decent enough time-waster but it doesn't come close to the three best beat-em-ups: Final Fight, Turtles in Time, and Streets of Rage 2.
Speaking of this Jelly Boy/Smart Ball talk: You know what would be awesome? If they finally put the unreleased Jelly Boy 2 on NSO. It's highly unlikely- I'm just saying, it would be welcome.
The San Francisco Rush port on Midway Arcade Treasures 3. Let's be honest: It's broken as heck. The physics are all screwed up- it's WAY too easy to crash or lose control of the car. But that's part of the fun: Launching a colossal jump, then nudging the side of a building and watching your car do an insane amount of rapid fire spins until it finally crashes into something and explodes.
Plus there are weird audio glitches like "Final LAPS TO GO", or the random voice bytes when you enter a hidden area: "I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!"- again, part of the charm.
And hey, at least it's still better than the PS1 version.
@DawgP Hopefully many/all of these things will be fixed/added in a future update. It's not out of the realm of possibility- after all, the Blizzard Arcade Collection gave more options and games with later updates.
First time playing Ghoul Patrol, BTW. While it wasn't bad enough to not want to try all the levels, I didn't like it as much as ZAMN. Why they added the "slowing down" momentum to the movements instead of the tight controls of the original is beyond me, but it made the gameplay a bit slower. And these physics made platforming jumping more difficult than it needed to be.
Unless Sonic 3 has the non-Michael Jackson music that would warrant yet another purchase, I can't get excited about this. I already own all these games in numerous formats. This is really made for people who have never bought a classic Sonic game in their life.
BTW, for new players: If you don't want to sit through the lengthy opening cutscene every time you start the game, just go to Password and hit Start- the first level password is 000.
Just played through it for the first time since I was a kid, took me about 50 minutes. I still contend this is an underrated gem. The unique attack mechanics offer strategy and variety in how you thwart enemies. The music is still catchy as heck. The levels are extremely short, but sweet. Finally, the enemies are unique, being food-based and all.
I honestly don't know what they were thinking making the U.S. version so hard. Yeah yeah, eat customers' quarters. But I mean seriously, at least you stand a chance in the Japanese version. Interestingly, it's usually the reverse.
I'm annoyed they didn't fix the rubber band AI that was so prevalent in the first game. Many a time I was winning a race only to drop back to third in the last few feet because an opponent launched a weapon at the last second and zoomed past me.
I buy the carts loose to save money but store them in Universal Game Cases with custom cover artwork from The Cover Project to look nice and fancy on the shelf, plus to protect from dust.
@Ganner The variant I heard from a friend back then was: "If you jump over the statue between the two pillars in Lara's pool room, when she gets out of the water and says "Now I better take off these wet clothes", she actually DOES!"
I loved the game on PS4 but yeah, I never felt the need to get 100% completion, unlike the previous Crash games in the series. It's just too damn hard.
That said, there are certain things in older mags that make you go "oh wow, were they way off" with the benefit of hindsight. That's all part of the fun though.
The Genesis version of Rock 'n Roll Racing is terrible. The music cuts out every time the announcer chimes in, which is quite often. Glad it was included for completion's sake but of the three versions, I won't be revisiting that one anytime soon.
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Yeah the 3D capabilities wouldn't be there but I'd love a console version of the port with the extra levels not found on the Wii version, and without any of the waggle controls.
The choppy framerates are most noticeable in the Street Fighter games. As I mentioned previously, the versions on Street Fighter 30th Anniversary are superior.
However, I had a blast playing through 1944 for the first time. Love the rock soundtrack!
I doubt I'll be playing this version very much anyway. The Switch's controller doesn't lend well to fighting games, I find. I'll stick with Street Fighter 30th Anniversary on PS4.
I like that they're giving us some titles we never got on Wii/Wii U VC. That said, I wish they'd more frequently mix some big name games in with the lesser known ones.
Not to pile on, but the idea that all SNES games sound the same is demonstrably false- the SNES sound chip, despite its limitations in hindsight, was incredibly diverse and versatile for the time.
@Dinklebot That would require modding the game. Not like there haven't been other changed versions on Virtual Console but those are usually removing advertising or epilepsy-inducing stuff, not replacing an entire soundtrack. Best we can hope for is if they start putting GBA titles on there and DKC 3 happens to be one of them.
FTR, both soundtracks have their good points, but I actually think the SNES DKC3 soundtrack is greatly underrated.
Ahahaha Tuff E Nuff (er, I mean: HEY PUNK! ARE YOU TUFF E NUFF? Master the Moves to Master Me!). For those who haven't played it, if you're expecting a worthy competitor to Street Fighter II, prepare to be disappointed. But it was probably something they could get cheap.
Looking forward to playing through DKC 3 again, obviously. Interested in trying out Nightshade, Valis, and Ignition Factor for the first time.
I suppose this is good news if you've only owned Nintendo consoles, but for me, I already own the majority of these on either the Capcom Classics Collections, Capcom Arcade Cabinet, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary, Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle, and the Super Retrocade. There are a few exclusives here but much of it is double dips, just like Namco has a habit of doing.

Re: Cult GameCube Shmup 'Castle of Shikigami 2' Is Headed To Switch This December
I never made it past the third stage in this. It's just too many bullets.
But the new localization has me intrigued. I would be surprised if they re-dubbed it, so will it be Japanese voices only with new text?
Re: Soapbox: Wave Race 64 Is Now 25 Years Old, And It Still Rules
I like Wave Race 64 but it's pretty short.
Re: Don't Worry, Nintendo Isn't Abandoning Switch Online's SNES And NES Libraries
Good to hear. Speaking of which, it's been a couple months since the last update, so.... can we get some more games, please?

Guess I'll be the first to list it: Tomb Raider 1: Caves.
Otherwise, yeah, SMB 1-1.

Taito Legends puts this collection to shame. It's too bad we can't just have an HD re-release of that instead.

The arcade has the better graphics but the SNES version has the better soundtrack and more levels.

You guys who say this update is a bunch of nothing have clearly never played Spanky's Quest. It's a lot of fun.
Re: Review: Shantae - A Dated Dance That Completes The Set On Switch

My favorite is still Pirate's Curse, followed by Sirens.
Re: How Do You Feel About Mario After His 35th Anniversary? Nintendo Apparently Wants To Know
It was good, but two things brought it down: 1) The timed releases, and 2) No Galaxy 2.
EDIT: How do I feel about Mario himself? No complaints.
Re: Poll: What's The Best Mega Man Game?
Mega Man X. The one that's still the most fun to play through today, and one of the best soundtracks of the series.

Re: Dev Explains Why Nintendo Made Mario's Anniversary Games Limited-Time
So make the physical version a limited edition item but keep the digital version up. Removing both just feels unnecessarily harsh.
And this is coming from someone who bought 3D All-Stars on day one.
Re: Talking Point: Is The N64 Pad Actually The Best Controller Ever?
...I disagree. It's one of the worst.

Oh well, I still had fun despite that.

It's the best game in today's NSO update, which isn't saying a whole lot. The similarly caveman-themed Chuck Rock is way better.
