The Nintendo Switch already has a lot of big-name video game franchises, but one that's still not graced the beloved hybrid system is the legendary Tomb Raider series starring the one and only Lara Croft. This might be about to change, though.
You see, the website Game Rant has shared promotional artwork for a title known as Tomb Raider: The Ultimate Experience.
This collection - which will "relive Lara's greatest adventures" in one package - will supposedly be released on multiple platforms including the Switch on 27th August, and is being handled by Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics.
Alongside this, it's been discovered that Square Enix has renewed a trademark for "T.R.U.E. Tomb Raider Ultimate Experience" as of June 2020. This same trademark was originally filed in 2018.
Last month, Square Enix said it would be announcing several titles between July and August, instead of hosting a conference this year. If this leak turns out to be real, it could very well be one of the many announcements on the way.

Wow! So what 3 titles is that? Looks like the first ever from PSOne, second, and then the last one is Rise of the Tomb Raider? I’m not a Tomb Raider expert...
I’ll buy as long as its physical!
This would be great, I hope it's as comprehensive as possible.
@ChromaticDracula That first one is hard to tell, all the PS1 titles look similar, but the second one is from Tomb Raider Anniversary and the last one is from Lara Croft and the Guardian of the Light.
Would be another great addition to this fantastic console.
WHAT? I thought Tomb Raider was a PlaySation exclusive! I guess I'm really out of the loop here
@dux It was at one point, like Rayman and Crash Bandicoot, but not anymore.
@ChromaticDracula @PcTV I'm pretty sure that the first image is from Tomb Raider III. But I understand that will be three "generations" not three "games"
@dux : There have been Tomb Raider games on GBA, DS, and Wii if memory serves.
As long as all of the games are on the cartridge, I'll bite.
Angel of Darkness on the switch!!!!
@dux Tomb Raider was never a PlayStation Exclusive.
the games have appeared on just about every platform PC,Saturn,Ps1,Ps2,Gameboy,GBA,DS,Xbox,Gamecube,360,ps3,psp,vita,phones,Dreamcast and wii
only system it wasn't on was n64 and Wii U.
only exclusive was Angel of Darkness on the PS2 but it was also a PC game. It was the worst one.
TR 2 and TR 3 were only on ps1 with the PC versions receiving Gold edition and extra content.
@dux Never was. The first generation had PS1, PC and Saturn games. And every Tomb Raider game Launched at PC
@dux Angel of Darkness happened, then it went to all consoles after that. Legend was on PS2, PS3, XBox, 360, even the Gamecube.
I don't bother for the first generation, nether Angel of Darkness. But if it include Legends, Anniversary and Lara Croft series, I'm in. But I really want to see the rebooted series, at least the first game
I’ve enjoyed the reboot series, I have all 3 on PS4. I could use a Tomb Raider game on Switch though.
Be interesting to see which ones they'll pick. Might just be the HD Collection on PS3 (Legend, Anniversary, Underworld) but then again it might be another 3.
TR 2013 would be kinda neat on Switch might you.
Given the rumour says multiplatform, if it's true I'd guess it would contain all the games except the reboot trilogy (Tomb Raider 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider) given the reboot trilogy is already on the other systems.
I would guess if it was a single PS1 game, it would be the second. The third was difficult and the fourth was an a break from the classic formula. But to be honest the originals are so small just put them all on there.
@kingbk @Silly_G @w00dm4n @RCGamer @Angelic_Lapras_King Thanks guys, as a N64/GBC/GBA then 3DS/Switch owner, I guess you can really tell I've skipped some generations. Tomb Raider is still tied to the PS1 in my mind.
Man, if this collection contained all the major Tomb Raider games, I'd be hyped. Even more so if they decided to throw in the twin-stick shooters and Lara Croft Go as a bonus.
This would be PERFECT for the switch. I love Lara Croft memes aside, and I would buy that in a heartbeat.
If its like all the games that's massive news. Next up: metal gear solid anthology, Hells yeah!
so are they only talking about the old ones? If so I will pass.
@ChromaticDracula As long as it's physical I'm in too.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Saturn.
I'll probably get this on Steam seeing as how it doesn't look like the reboot game trilogy is part of this package, at least not based on this image. It'd just feel a bit scattered having it on my Switch seeing as how I would then have the classic games on my Switch and then the Crystal Dynamics trilogy on Steam.
@dux since Tomb Raider started it was on bother Playstation and PC with the Saturn and Dreamcast even getting some of the original games. Even the following generation the games were mostly multi platform and the Gamecube and Wii had most from that gen released before the reboot. So it was more synonymous with the Playstation brand than exclusive.
Red Rover, Red Rover, send Laura right on over!
Very nice!!
It’s a great serie!
I have the Game Boy Color game.
Although Game Rant said the image on the right in the above promo art "is absolutely from the recent three Tomb Raider games" this doesn't seem to be the case.
As noted by @PcTV above, it appears to be artwork from Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (2010). Here's the full shot:
https://tombraiders.net/stella/images/blog/guardian/LCGOL_puzzle.jpg
This looks like it will be a retro collection - excluding Crystal Dynamic's reboot trilogy.
Well wouldn’t THAT be an unexpected Smash character...
Been wanting to play the original for a while now.
@kingbk Rayman was never a PlayStation exclusive character, I’m pretty sure.
I hope they aren’t straight ports I hope they at least add quality of life changes.
@dux Nah. Nearly all of them is on Xbox and PC too.
@ItsOKToBeOK unexpected sure, but a welcome one 😂
Tomb Raider 2013 already runs on Tegra X1 GPU on Shield TV, and were released years ago.
I wonder if the collection includes that one.
I'd be interested. I never played them.
@mattesdude Rayman wasn't it was originally a Jaguar exclusive before being sported to the Saturn and Psone and the second one launched on the N64 before being released on everything else after several months of exclusivity. To my knowledge no mainline Rayman game ever launched on a Sony system first for a period it was either multi platform day one or ported later.
@Ventilator Currently only 4 Tomb Raider games are on PS4 (the reboot trilogy and Temple of Osiris) and 8 on XB1 (the 4 Xbox 360 games via backwards compatibility, the reboot trilogy and Temple of Osiris).
Never got into tomb raider as a kid, but id definitely jump on board if it came to switch
As neat as that sounds- I’m hesitant- while the old games have brought much joy and enthusiasm from fans over the years, the games haven’t aged well in the gameplay and visual department. I love the more modern survivalist games on PS4; their visuals, characterizations, stories and gameplay mechanics are well made and incredibly beautiful to watch unfold onscreen.
Dunno, folks- this doesn’t seem too great an idea.
A rerelease of the old games would be nice, but I honestly don't know if TR I-III aged that well in terms of gameplay, level design and so on... Haven't played them in ages and in my memory they are great. But that's the case with so many old games, but playing them again today is just meeeh...
Haven't play a Tomb Raider game since the Wii so if this is true I may check it out.
Nice! I really hope that if they include the five classic games, they sport HD visuals as seen in OpenLara. A mere port of the low res PS1 graphics would be a wasted opportunity.
Also would be nice if they included the 1-3 expansion packs, but I'm not holding my breath.
This is really interesting. The originals haven’t aged well at all and could use some sprucing up but the reboot series is very good. I’d love to see them pull a Capcom and remake the old games with the rebooted game engine.
@Zenszulu , You're right. I have an Atari Jaguar and I adore it. The best version of Rayman is on Atari Jaguar.
@dux It never was. The first Tomb Raider game was actually a timed exclusive on the Saturn in Europe.
It's fake. There's a typeface that the modern Tomb Raider games use; it's called Uni Sans. This graphic doesn't use that font.
Also, Crystal Dynamics is currently putting all its man power in Marvel's Avengers. What studio would port it though?
If this was the reboot trilogy, I would totally buy it. I swear Square is preoccupied with putting 20 year old games on the Switch. I'd much rather have the reboot trilogy, a respectable port of FFXV, and KH3 than all of the old FF games we've gotten so far and that pocket edition of XV...
I played the originals recently...well, tried to, anyway. They’re not anywhere as good as I remember from the 90s! I knew they were gonna be rough, but...oof. BEWARE!
Guardian of the Light on Switch would be a great match! Really sensational co-op 2 player experience, somewhat overlooked because it's not a traditional Tomb Raider game.
I'd definitely be interested in this!
Absolutely, yes! I have been hoping to play through this series in full, however the older games are a little too clunky and frustrating in their current forms, thought I did play it on Vita.
Well, I've got all the Tomb Raiders on Steam, so I wouldn't get this but I'd be happy for whatever is in the collection to be available on Switch ....
I’ve been praying for a tomb raider release for years! Please be true. ❤️
I wasn't much of a fan of the classic Tomb Raider games back in the day. The first one was a nice surprise, but every other game in the series felt kind of rushed to bank on the Lara Croft craze that the first game had sparked. I distinctly remember playing TR 2 and 3 and wondering why they felt like they had been developed with less care than the original game.
@dux It was never a Playstation exclusive it was originally a Saturn game, but became popular when it jumped to PSOne, but they were all on PC, as well, just not N64, probably due to limited cartridge space at the time.
Oh yes please! I’d love this and the new trilogy on switch
The first Tomb Raider was hot garbage, so I assume the other ones on PSX are to. But I'm definitely would give the more recent titles a try.
@kingbk
When was Tomb Raider Playstation-exclusive?
Bet it's download only, or if it is physical a small cartridge with a PS1 game on it and the rest are download codes.
Damn I loved the first one back in the day, I might be tempted if a proper physical happens
Second one looks like Tomb Raider Anniversary, and the third is the top down one called Guardian of Light.
I’ll be disappointed as I really want the new trilogy on switch
If they're putting them all in, then they better also include all the extra bonus levels/DLC such as:
Unfinished Business
The Golden Mask
The Lost Artifact
The Times Exclusive Level
Beneath the Ashes
Lara's Shadow
Having a properly released collection that includes these extra exclusive levels would be pretty cool as it's not easy to play them these days.
I've been playing the original Tomb Raider recently on PSP and it is a great time. Definitely a lot of nostalgia involved for me, so I don't know how enjoyable it would be for people that never played it.
I think the tank controls actually add quite a lot to the experience. It really slows it down and creates a very deliberate and tense style of platforming. Lots of walking. I like walking.
I might pick this up, depending the price and the games included in the collection. I do have a bit of a soft spot for the series and enjoy most of the games. It would be a shame if none of the recent reboot era games are included though, as it would be nice for all eras to have some representation... As amazing as they look, there is no reason why at least the first two new reboot games couldn't run on the Switch. The first game was initially on PS3/360 and Rise of the Tomb Raider was released on 360.
Funnily enough, the first game was actually a timed exclusive for the Sega Saturn (albeit a very short one).
@dux Me.. Tomb Raider 4 was also released on Dreamcast. See?
I'd take anybof the rebooted games but the others? Hell no!
I see anniversary among the art, which is a good start, but the subtitle "ultimate experience" rather than "ultimate collection" or "complete collection" bothers me. And none of the rebooted series art is a rather clear sign they'll probably cut off before that, maybe to make another collection, who knows.
Tomb Raider was on Saturn before Playstation and Rayman was on Jaguar before Playstation.
Hope the cheats still work to get her naked
@kingbk @dux Tomb Raider first appeared on the Saturn and Rayman was on everything as well
@ChromaticDracula First one looks like Tomb Raider 3 to me.
There are few things that look suspicious. Firstly, the first picture is from Tomb Raider III, which is not the best place to start. The picture in the centre is Anniversary and that makes sense because it's a remake of the first game but what's doing in the middle? Thirdly, the game on the right is Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, a totally different kind of game and why wouldn't they include Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris as well?
The selection of games doesn't make any sense, it should be a bigger collection or a more focused collection, for instance, Legend, Anniversary, Underworld and the two Lara Croft games that I mentioned, or even bigger and include the original games, too. The picture could be just three of all the included games as well.
So it the old school tomb raider from the looks of things. Would not mind if this rumor ends up being true.
Ps
Not again the reboot coming to switch as well
Doesn't matter what the context is, what's being said or written of it, it doesn't matter at all--Whenever I hear, read or think of Tomb Raider, what comes to my mind is the sound of glasses rattling on a tray, a slow butler moaning and gurgling (occasionally flatulating), and immediately following that is an impulse to lock said butler in a freezer, or meat closet, or whatever!
I hope they're not direct ports.
These games have aged like milk left out in the sun.
I do love the old school Tomb Raider games, but do suspect that the older PS1 era games could be tricky for new players to get into in this modern age. As I've got most of the games already on one platform or another, I'll be unlikely to grab a new collection of past games.
Well the pictures look like TR 3, Anniversary and Guardian of Light.
A collection of Legends, Anniversary, Underworld and the two games in the Lara Croft series would make for a really good collection.
The older games have not really aged that well in my oppinion and could be ignored for all i care.
Shut up and take my money!
@kingbk what the *****. Rayman was never exclusive. The first platform it came out on was the Atari Jaguar. Where on gods earth did you pluck Rayman being Sony exclusive from?
@BlueOcean from what I’ve heard they picked the best looking shots from all 3 eras that had already passed selection. Its been long rumoured this pack. But yeah it truly is pretty expansive featuring all the main games from the series. Crazy.
@BlueOcean underworld would be a good one actually, didn’t get very far in that but enjoyed what I played on PC
Day One!!!!!!!
Yes yes and a thousands yes’s.
Guardian of light sneaking in there those couple of games that style are underrated.
Even Lara Croft Go is slept on.
More more more. Would love any of these on switch. The earlier ones need to be the versions with updated controls or the remakes. But yeah delighted.
@janpampoen this.
Tomb Raider 2 was the best of the original games, no clue how it holds up now. Probably not too well but I'd be curious to find out.
Tbh, Tomb Raider is at the best it has even been in the first two games of the reboot trilogy. The 3rd game was pretty abysmal.
If this turns out to be true I will be the first one in line to buy it. Hope they don't mess it up with some "download-required" crap like the BioShock retail release.
@Mynameishello Yeah, if rumours are true it might be a comprehensive collection without Tomb Raider 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
@ozwally I have Underworld on Xbox One but I haven't played it yet. I will!
I hope its Tomb raider Legend, Anniversary and Underworld with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light included. Those are my favorite Tomb raider games.
If the collection is meant to represent the various games since TR1, then I'd be looking for some upgrading of the original gfx in the oldest set, alongside some 'quality of life' enhancements, such as saving abilities and more modern style of controls.
Having a smattering of the original style (from PS1 era to current gen), plus the twin-stick duo and GO would be a quite sweet collection.
My expectations versus reality are likely to be very different!!
If this happens, and if it comes to Switch, and if it has at least one of the original PS Tomb Raiders in the collection, then I'm all over it. These were some of those PS games that I started, played for a while, wanted to play more but was more interested in Ocarina of Time, and never went back to.
Rumor seems kind of hokey though. The image reeks of "dude in his basement playing with Microsoft Paint," and Google Stadia? Really?
Don't get your hopes up guys, I regret to say.
I've read on resetera that the pic is a fake.
There WILL be an ULTIMATE experience , so that bit is true , but it's
prob. a remaster of the reboot/rise/shadow trilogy, for next-gen consoles ( otherwise , what would the point )
So 4K, 60 fps for all three I guess ?
Yeah , i was pretty excited too , oh the classic TR games for
current consoles YAAAYYY - well not
It seems that there is a bit of debate on the image.
I see an 'announcement' of a TR collection that starts from the very beginning until the newer games (reboots).
I do hope this is the case and that we can finally not only play the classics but have the reboots available to play on the go.
Tomb Raider legend, Anniversary, Underworld are to me, the best Tomb Raider games.
The 5 previous games, 1, 2, 3 Chronicles, last revelations are eh... well the first 3 are prett good.
Then there is Angel of Darkness.
And the 3 new games that I feel are too heavy for the switch to handle without massive graphic cuts.
There are also 2 spin-off twinstick style co-op puzzle games and TR GO.
I'm interested, mainly only for the last modern entry in that poster. Let's wait for the details but overall this is great!!
Lara Croft for Smash confirmed!
I’ve only played the Tomb Raider reboots TR, Rise, and Shadow. Are the others any good?
@Whalehome You should play Anniversary, Legend and Underworld, too.
I will buy this on day one. I hope it contains the first three PS1 games, which I think were the best. Also, Tomb Raider Legend was a great game.
@Whalehome
The recent games are good but the best of all is the very first game, which was released on PS1 but later remade as Tomb Raider Anniversary on the PSP. The remake is arguably better, but the original was a perfect game already. Tomb Raider 2 was also great, followed by 3 which was good too. 4 was pretty good, but 5 was only okey. Tomb Raider Legend (Game Cube, PSP) was a very good return to form.
I would not be shocked to see Lara Croft join Smash as a DLC fighter.
Overrated series.
Tomb Raider (Saturn) was the first proper 3D game because it arrived before Super Mario 64. I remember we kids were stunned.
@graysoncharles Rise could work, it had a port to 360. But yeah, Shadow is probably asking too much of the Switch.
Ahhhh, the "Ultimate Experience", I guess Angel of Darkness won't be included. Honestly though, if they can somehow get a port of the 2013 TR on here, I'd happily invest in it to play it on a little screen.
Dude. I'd literally do ANYTHING for the original Core (British) TR games on Switch. The rest would be welcome too but they don't have much soul.
If this is Crystal Dynamics first reboot (Legend/Anniversary/Underworld), I will be ecstatic!
If this also includes The two isometric Lara Croft games (LC and the Guardian of Light/LC and the Temple of Osiris), I will be over the freaking moon in excitement!
I've been asking for all 5 of these since the launch of the Switch!
@graysoncharles Very true. I played that my freshman year of Uni while battling a flu. Let's just say in retrospect, that makes my divorce from my first wife the second worst thing I've contended with in my life...
@dux lol me too and I'm excited for this! I loved Tomb Raider on the Saturn lol, no joke! I remember paying the tutorial mansion level and thinking, wow this is amazing it's like a huge open world to find secrets! This was unusual back in 1996!
Can't believe I missed this article earlier, this would be a great addition to the Switch library... Physically all on cartridge would be ideal, but I can forsee the first being on cartridge with the others as a download like Spyro, hope I'm wrong...
If there will be Tomb Raider for the Switch I really hope it’s not the old Tomb Raider games, they have already been ported to handheld years ago and it would feel repetitive to release the same games over and over.. Also, I feel like it wouldn’t make much sense since they’d probably rather want to sell more copies of their most recent games? My guess is that they will release Tomb Raider 2013 on Switch and announce a fourth game to the next generation of consoles and PC
@Nintemma I don't remember Tomb Raider ports for handheld consoles... What do you mean?
I just want the old tomb raider not the reboots... instant buy for sure, really this is the best games ever made.... I would by all of they remix all
The images look like they're from Tomb Raider 2, Tomb Raider Anniversary, and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. Kind of an odd combination. I think the top-down Lara Croft games would be a perfect fit on the Switch though.
I want this to be true
I would love to see the original Tomb Raider I-V and as well as the Crystal Dynamics original Tomb Raider trilogy for the Nintendo Switch.
@PcTV
Uhg your killing me that should be called the worst of TR compilation. Why not throw in the fairly awful TR Go while they are at it.
All I really want is TR 2013 which was the game that rebooted the series and the character and is a damned fine game that I considered GOTY worthy when playing oj the ps3 at the time. It would easily run on Switch. Lets keep hoping thats in the compilation or even released solo.
Any body want Monster Truck Madness 1 & 2 on the Switch.
Nice rumour, but I'm really skeptical about this. The original trilogy? The 2000 games? The NEW trilogy?! In one package... on Switch!
Sounds really exciting, but if Rise and Shadow of the Tomb Raider also came to Switch, then this definitely needs to be highlighted or announced on a Direct, to show that's indeed possible.
August 27 has come and gone. What gives Square Enix?!
@BlueOcean
PSP and then Playstation Vita. They both had Anniversary and Legend.
@Nintemma I see.
@kalosn I think Rise and Shadow of a tomb raider might be too demanding for the switch.
Tomb Raider reboot from 2013 can definitely run on switch tho
Edit in 6/5/2021: I just recently learned that Rise of the Tomb Raider was also on Xbox 360. So maybe it will just be Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider.
I hope it is the Tomb Raider trilogy (Tomb Raider: Legends, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and Tomb Raider: Underworld) or the at least maybe Tomb Raider 2013 on switch
Hoping for the original games. HD 60FPS would be amazing.
