Happy Monday! The latest boxed charts are in for the UK and, to no one's surprise, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom comfortably takes the top spot.
According to Chris Dring from GamesIndustry.biz, the latest Zelda entry from Nintendo is the biggest boxed launch of 2023 so far, beating out Hogwarts Legacy by 54%. It also beat out its predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, by a staggering 173% and is already the fourth biggest Zelda game of all time in revenue, sitting just behind The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It's not quite the biggest Switch launch of all time, however, as that honour still belongs to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Of course, since Nintendo doesn't share digital data, we're not really getting a complete picture of how the game has done at launch, but if the boxed sales are anything to go by, we have a hunch that Tears of the Kingdom might become the best-selling Zelda game of all time sooner than later.
Elsewhere, the PS4 and Xbox One releases for Hogwarts Legacy have kept Avalanche Software's game high up in the top ten, while Breath of the Wild itself has enjoyed a surge in sales in the wake of its sequel's launch, coming in at number 8.
Finally, we're not sure what's going on here, but Minecraft's domination in the charts appears to be waning. The evergreen title has been sitting comfortably in the top ten for what's felt like yonks, but has now fallen down to 22nd place after coming in 15th last week.
Here's your look at the week's top forty in full:

Where is the new Zelda Anime Movie ???????
Amazing numbers, especially considering this is just physical sales. The fact that it beat the Harry Potter game(which is a multiplat) is quite impressive.
These numbers are going to be even more massive here in the States. Midnight launches were pretty busy.
For the UK, just beating FIFA is impressive.
TotK has beaten out Hogwarts legacy by 54% despite that game being released on 5 different platforms and having been out for 3 months on 3 of them. 0.o wow
TotK is going to be a monster in a year of some top quality titles.
Beating HL is exactly the kind of news I wanted to hear on monday. Quality over quantity needs to come back to gaming.
That being said, there is little sense in comparing 2023 release to Wind Waker from 2002, the market size then vs the market size now is incomparable.
I'd even say that basically any 2000s game would outsell the rest of the list combined if it came out today.
Does this information imply any specific number ranges?
Also scalping has increased by 100% 😜
@Kiz3000 Pretty sure that 54% means the launch period of Hogwarts Lagacy, not the overall sales. I mean the article also mentioned that it beat out BotW by 174% and if they were talking about overall sales that would mean that TotK sold about 82mio copies lol (since BotW sold about 30mio and +174% = 82mio)
Still very impressive though since Hogwarts Legacy sold like crazy as far as I'm aware
Not surprising at all and absolutely well deserved, loved what I've played so far and I've barely scratched the surface (not literally as I've just been underground for the first time)!
By the way, it's pretty funny to see Breath of the Wild back in the top 10 thanks to Tears of the Kingdom's release!
No surprise at all. The game is a masterpiece! Nintendo managed to improve EVERYTHING from Breath of the Wild.
They managed to make a world we have already explored in the previous game so full of wonders AND added so MUCH more!
This is how you make a game!
We need a Zelda version of that Mario Movie money image.
This is very well deserved, awesome game.
@Kiz3000 that 54% was just for launch week physical sales, not total sales, Hogwarts legacy during launch week was only available on PS5 and Xbox series S/X which those total console users combined don't even add up to half of the switch user base. What would actually be impressive is if Zelda TOTK can achieve more life time sales than Hogwarts Legacy.
@Kiz3000 This is about the launch week and physical sales only.
BOTW coming in at 8th is pretty cool too! It's always a good week when GTA V is kept out of the top 10
Fully deserved, usually games struggle at end of consoles cycle but hopefully this sequel can buck that trend!
It's overrated and impossible how many people just eat it and don't ask questions.
The graphics look hardly dated, draw distance before Links feet and more...
The gameplay repeats flaws from Breath of the Wild. I don't really like the item creation.
From the hours I played so far, I'm not that excited.
It's not a bad game of course, but 10/10 or 100%? No definitely not!
@Nintendo4Sonic Didn't realise you had the one and only correct opinion.
You do realise it is possible for people to like something more than you do? I'm personally loving Tears of the Kingdom and would say it is likely going to be my favourite ever game.
Notes: $70 will be the norm going forward and Advanced Wars failed miserably by every metric.
@Nintendo4Sonic It’s not impossible though, is it? They just like something that you don’t.
Beating Harry Potter is impressive. Well deserved though as its a fantastic, Nintendo at their best is unbeatable.
@Nintendo4Sonic I love it when people voice their opinion but do it like they're stating a fact, i feel it speaks volumes about them as a person.
It's impressive beating out A Multi-Plat Harry Potter game in the UK.
At this point It's undeniable BOTW has lifted Zelda to the tier of Mario or Pokemon. But when Links Awakening remake did as well as the FF7 Remake it was pretty clear BOTW wasn't a one-off.
@Dr_Lugae Why is it impressive? It released this week with fairly massive marketing support. HL released on the lesser systems, albeit with a greater install base, last week. Imo, if it stays on top of HL for a few weeks - that would be more in line with impressive.
Zelda isn't some indie startup.
@Dr_Lugae
Nice. Seeing those sales for the remake makes me happy. It was my first Zelda and even with so much nostalgia the game was still great. No doubt Nintendo will continue to make 2D Zelda.
I think it is time for me to let go of the scepticism and one day get Tears Of The Kingdom. Almost skipped the Super Mario Bros. Movie because of it.
Not really surprising but I am surprised it beat out Botw's initial launch. Guess it's because the Swtich user base already exists compared to it just beginning to grow.
The game is awesome so far from what I played.
Interesting.
I saw 30 in 1 Game Collection Vol. 1 on the list.
I will check the game.
„we have a hunch that Tears of the Kingdom might become the best-selling Zelda game of all time sooner than later“
Hmmm really? I mean I’d love that, but BOTW will have had a much much longer shelf life. And will TOTK attract people that weren’t convinced by BOTW? That game was lauded as maybe the best ever as well, so if you didn’t bite then, what are the odds that you will now?
I’m expecting something like 15 million. On Switch, a later port might add more.
I'm guessing TotK will have larger short term sales but lower long-term sales. Definitely think it'll clear 20+ million, though, which is still insane for an exclusive that likely won't be enjoying price cuts.
This game is truly fantastic. Im totally addicted to it. It really does deserve this success.
@Cashews You do realise that if TotK is the “biggest boxed launch of 2023” as per this article, that means it also beat the mammoth launch of HL on PS5 too?
@Jprhino84 that is a good point. My mind went into stasis and thought it was a Christmas game. Apologies
If Tears did that good in UK where Nintendo is usually at its weakest then I imagine the other regions is gonna be a blood bath
pokemon is more popular then zelda it seems...
@Arawn93 I don't think we can say that about the UK market anymore you know, Nintendo certainly haven't reached PlayStation status but they're not playing second fiddle to Sega anymore
uk market is notorious for switch games falling quickly from top spot 2-3 weeks from now zelda might not even be number 1
@Arawn93 though I did just see a report about Xbox series X/S reaching 2 million sales 12 weeks quicker than the Switch, so what do I know 😅
Now I am really curious for the official worldwide sales numbers.
@johnedwin Yeah, Street Fighter 6 incoming in 2½ weeks. Might be able to dethrone TotK by then.
Thanks for reminding me not to visit TearsofthekingdomLife for a while
You really should consider having a limit on the number of daily articles about the same game/movie. I know it’s tempting to flood the home page with news, but maybe keep the ‘random’ and ‘joke’ articles to a minimum when the release is so fresh that a lot of necessary articles are already being posted. Not everyone is playing this game (yet) so please try not to frustrate those people with your enthusiasm.
@PinderSchloss you know you don't have to click on every article, right?
Surprised to see that Switch Sports is still selling well, hopefully if they ever make a sequel on the next console it won’t be as lackluster as this one. And have more of a focus on Miis again.
@PinderSchloss We're a Nintendo-focused site, and this is arguably the biggest Nintendo release of the last five years! A huge number of people are extremely excited and interested to read about TOTK and discuss and debate it here, us included. If that's not you, no problem — the articles are easy to avoid.
If you're vexed by multiple Zelda articles a day, I respectfully suggest that taking a break from NL for a few weeks might be best. We've got plenty of Zelda 'counterprogramming' lined up, but this is a huge deal and we're all excited for it.
@PinderSchloss lmao speak for yourself. Imagine going “Reeee! Stop making Tears articles!” when it hasn’t even been a full week since the game dropped.
Also hilarious that you moan about the articles yet you provide no suitable replacement suggestions. Literal definition of “complain, but don’t provide solutions”.
@Arawn93 Every. Single. Article. I can set my watch to it.
@dartmonkey Animal Crossing may not have been the biggest release - but it became the biggest release Nintendo may ever have.
@PinderSchloss We're all getting a bit impatient/edgy in the wait for new hardware (and hopefully some games we - "I " - want to play - although I haven't exactly got high hopes when it comes to that personally - and I've played video games since 1980 regularly, so)...
But it's their job to write about what is popular (mostly) and there really just isn't much else big other than Pikmin 4 and some DLC on the horizon... so
@dartmonkey @Arawn93 @shgamer
You’re absolutely right and I get it. I’m personally frustrated with the whole Tears of the Kingdom thing and I shouldn’t take my own experience as a reference. It’s a beautiful thing that so many people are having fun and I was an idiot.
People should be entitled to their own opinions, I haven't got a problem with that.
It's the downright lies that bother me!
I associate Breath of the Wild with some really tough times. It got me through them, but that world and the whole atmosphere is very much connected to my worst memories. I was never planning on revisiting it for that reason. But now I kind of feel forced to and it’s driving me crazy.
From A Link to the Past until now, Zelda has always given me something to look forward to. I honestly think I wouldn’t be here without it. So I will love it to death but this is heartbreaking for me personally. That’s where my negativity comes from.
@lighteningbolt79 yeah, my opinion is ultimate. I'm the ultimate gamer. 😊😉

@Nintendo4Sonic What are you talking about? You quite literally said it was “impossible” that people could like the game because of the reasons you personally dislike it.
That was all I responded to. Please take a moment and reread your original comment.
@Nintendo4Sonic Again stating an opinion like its a fact. Your not fussed with the game so everyone who loves it as a fanboy is basically what you're saying.
@Jprhino84
"It's overrated and impossible how many people just eat it and don't ask questions."
That's what I said. What I'm saying with that sentence isn't that no one is allowed to like it.
It's just annoying that so few people see flaws with that game.
Dude, i bought this game myself. And I didn't say it sucks. It's just not a 100% game, these reviews are ridiculous.
@WallyWest a lot of people act like this game is a new world wonder.
And i believe it's just these Switch only users, who are living in their own little world where it has to be so marvelous. Since, besides Pikmin 4, there isn't so much on the Nintendo horizon anymore.
@Nintendo4Sonic I never said you claimed people weren’t allowed. You said it was “impossible”. I pointed out that it obviously isn’t. You’re defending against something I never accused you of.
@Jprhino84 ok, maybe you're not understanding my point.
But let us not stretch that out. There are more important things to do.
I just shared my opinion.
@Nintendo4Sonic You’re really putting too much thought into this. You don’t like the game, many do. That’s it. Trying to psychoanalyse others and twist it into some kind of self-delusion is all rather silly. Sometimes, we’re in the minority and that’s fine. It doesn’t need to be rationalised.
@Nintendo4Sonic What point did you even make? I have zero problem with your opinion. Never did. I just find the framing of your opinion as if it’s inarguable as rather odd. That’s all. Nothing deeper than that.
Ha ha. I thought "yonks" was a word only used in Scotland by Scottish people to mean "in ages", or "for a long time"; however, I have been pleasantly surprised today x
@Olliemar28 any sign of the UK charts for this week? I figured the Japanese ones have been away due to their golden week holidays but can't think why the UK ones haven't shown up this week 🤔
@Otoemetry We've been informed it's been slightly delayed this week, but hopefully, we won't have to wait much longer!
@Olliemar28 great, thanks for letting me know. Excited to see if Zelda kept up the momentum!
