Man, what a blast from the past! I remember this from magazine previews back in the day; I always wanted to play it, but never got the chance. I might pick it up.
I never played it myself back in the day, but I was interested based on what little I saw of it in Nintendo Power. Prime candidate for NSO, IMHO, as it’s a console exclusive and a bit of an oddball.
I bounced off this game pretty quickly back in 2020, as it got stale and repetitive quickly. There were only 2-3 maps, monetization was aggressive even at the start, and better games were already available (like Splatoon 2). With so many live-services dying in a year (or less), I too am surprised it was still active. I think I just don’t get live-service games.
Man, this brings me back to when I had Chibi Robo on the GameCube (nearly 20 years ago!). Great game, and one that’s expensive used these days, so this is both a great value and a chance for more people to play a cult classic.
Sadly inevitable, as Nintendo just doesn't make/have the parts to repair 3DSes anymore. Glad i picked the digital version while the eShop was still around.
As a frequent theatergoer, the increasingly short gap between theatrical and digital releases is perplexing. Shouldn’t these movies be staying in theaters longer to make more money? Is digital so profitable that they want it out of theaters ASAP? There’s little sense in going to theaters these days when you can buy the movie outright in as little as 2 weeks unless you like the overall theater experience.
That's the gamble you make with F2P and live service games: some go on for years, many more die within a year; even the successful ones eventually go offline leaving you with nothing. I've come across Omega Strikers primarily through its soundtrack on Spotify (I've actually had several F2P game soundtracks on my recommended list). Nice soundtrack, liked the anime aesthetic, sad that it died such a quick death. Maybe selling the game at a reasonable price ($10-30) could have given it longer legs? Who knows?
I remember becoming something of an amateur photographer back when I first got my 3ds back in 2011. 3d photos were just that cool! (Even at a low resolution). Now in 2022, my OG 3DS is like a miniature scrapbook: I have pictures of old friends and sadly departed pets, school plays, college visits, museum trips... its a shame I didn't keep that up after 2013 ( I guess the magic wore off by then). Cool to see others using aging tech in interesting ways.
I preordered the physical collector’s edition before I heard about the game’s digital price and length. Is it worth $4? Sure, as the last 3DS game it’s a nice little novelty that’s the price of a cup of coffee these days. For $35? For $75? That’s another matter entirely. Can’t say I feel ripped off exactly, but this’ll teach me to rethink preordering games before I know all of the details. The collectors edition will be an interesting conversation piece on my bookshelf, I guess. I bought the digital version day of release out of curiosity, so I was one of the first to find out about the game’s short length.
@KayFiOS I bought the Humongous Collection on Steam as someone in their mid-to-late twenties, so there’s no shame in it. I replayed Spy Fox: Dry Cereal a year ago; it was a real nostalgia trip.
I loved playing Spy Fox, Freddi Fish, and PJ Sam on my dad’s old PC back in the early 00s. I own the whole series through Steam, so I probably won’t play the Switch versions but I may replay one of the Humongous games in the near future.
I bought the Collector’s Edition from Limited Run Games a few months ago. Great story, but it takes a while to really get into it. It’s a visual novel, so that’s a characteristic of the genre. It’s definitely on the “novel” side of visual novel, whereas games like Ace Attorney and Danganronpa are more interactive.
I originally owned the game on n64, but gave the original cartridge away to charity years ago. Picked it up a few months ago for $10 on the Wii U eShop. Still such good game. I’m glad more people are getting the chance to play it, but I’m not getting the expansion pass for the foreseeable future. Now if only Nintendo rereleased Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door…
In the time between the NSO Expansion Pack announcement and its release, I bought Paper Mario 64 on my Wii U and played it to completion. It was nice to play it again nearly 20 years later. It’s nice that some will be able to play it for their first time soon, but Nintendo really needs to step up its game. I’m glad I didn’t upgrade to the expansion pack, as I wasn’t all that interested in the Animal Crossing expansion and I own most of those Genesis games from previous collections. Honestly, I would have liked to just buy an N64 mini with 20 or so games for like $80-100 and be done with it; I like owning those games, not having them tied to a subscription service.
Moral of the story: glad I picked up a Wii U. I get to own digital n64 games, and I have the Zelda remasters that Nintendo (hopefully) ports to the Switch in the next 2 years.
I hate that I own most of the games offered by the service on other systems but that I’m still considering getting the Expansion Pack. I’m the kind of sucker that gets those Game and Watch rereleases, so yeah…I’m a mark.
I’m sticking to the n64 games on my Wii U for now. I really hope Nintendo unbundles Happy Home Paradise from the Expansion Pass eventually and just offers the N64/Genesis game library separately for a lower price, as I was never a huge fan of Happy Home Designer.
I just finished House in Fata Morgana's main story yesterday after getting the physical edition mid-September from Limited Run Games. As a veteran of VNs at this point (Ace Attorney Trilogy, Zero Escape Trilogy, Raging Loop, Gnosia, half of Umineko), HiFM is SO GOOD. I can understand why some might be hesitant; it is long, and the subject material may be too dark for some (see: murder, cannibalism, incest, homophobia, transphobia, domestic abuse, torture, dismemberment, rape, crucifixion, misery), but there's a love story and a tale of forgiveness buried under all of that. Unique non-anime art style, great soundtrack (Cicio is beautiful, so is Giselle), but a bit too long and dark (at least initially) for some.
$50 is way too expensive, IMHO. The new paid Animal Crossing DLC is basically Happy Home Designer: Switch Edition; nice concept, but not worth $25. I still have my Wii U with most of the N64 games I like, so I’ll be sticking with that. If Nintendo were to unbundle the AC DLC from the Expansion Pack and make the N64/Genesis collections $5-10, that would be far more reasonable.
Still glad I have my N64 games on Wii U. Genesis was unexpected, but isn’t much of a draw since most of the good games were released on the Sega Genesis Classics Collection 2-3 years ago.
I downloaded Deltarune Chapter 1 as soon as it released on the Switch, but I’ve yet to play it in the…2-3 years since release. Need to get on that…after I finish Undertale 6 years after it released.
I loved Alwa’s Awakening when I first played it on PC; now I’m replaying it on the Switch, which is nice due to the portable factor. These physical versions are nice. I might get the game-on-a-stick as a physical collectible. I’m not really the type to emulate games (if you know what I mean), so I may need to get a NES emulator to play this NES version. Definitely want to see what was added/changed.
I always like seeing another demake. I remember that one of the criticisms of SotN by the gaming press at the time (before they actually played it) was that it looked like a game from the previous generation. From these videos, it’s surprising how much could be done on the Genesis. Of course, the biggest loss in the transition would be the music; CD quality music simply wasn’t possible on the Genesis.
I was really excited to get the 4 book set, but alas. I'm glad I didn't sell my physical softcover copy of the Zelda guide, as it might be the only physical version for awhile.
I agree with most of the review’s criticisms. Even being a fan of No More Heroes and killer7, the Silver Case duology was hard to get through. NMH and k7 have that Suda weirdness but with some good (if simplistic) action gameplay to support it; Silver Case (and to a lesser extent it’s sequel Flower, Sun, and Rain) does not have that benefit.
1. Twilight Princess HD (Wii U): playing through TP for the first time after 10 years. Still great, HD much welcome.
2. Fire Emblem (GBA): playing through the GBA original after a VERY long time.
3. PICROSS 3D (DS): Love Picross; can’t get enough of it. I play through a few puzzles every so often.
4. Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4): can’t believe I haven’t completed this game during the pandemic. Great game, but I pick it up and drop it for weeks at a time.
5. Fire Emblem Warriors (Switch): still grinding through the History maps. Well over 100 hours into the game.
Wow, surprised that this is going to be many people’s first time playing Skyward Sword. I picked up a copy today for a younger sibling and tried it out a bit. Hard to understate this: the bump from 480p 30 FPS to 1080p 60 FPS is a high step up; the resolution bump isn’t as drastic an improvement as found is Wind Waker and Twilight Princess IMHO, but the framerate bump is something else (particularly after experiencing the terrible framerate drops found in Breath of the Wild). The new controls are overall good. I was worried that the Switch wouldn’t be able to replicate the motion controls found in the original, but the new motion controls (at least for the sword) are as good as or even better than the original. Buttons only controls are also good. I’m still not sure if I’ll pick up a copy, as I still have the original on the Wii U and was planning to replay it.
I'd personally like a New Play Control style Sin and Punishment N64 but with the controls of Star Successor; both fantastic games, but SaP64's controls were ever the best and could use some improvement.
Having bought a used Wii U in the last few weeks in order to play the other Zelda HD remasters, I'm tempted to get this one as well. The price point is a bit steep (Twilight Princess HD retailed for $50-60 with the Wolf Link amiibo included), and I already have Skyward Sword through backwards compatibility; one the other hand, the HD remasters definitely look better and have small but significant improvements to gameplay. I'd really like to test out the new control scheme before fully committing, but I'll probably get the game regardless.
Having played all 3 Zero Escape games and AI: The Somnium Files, I’m properly excited for this one. Hope it runs better than the original on the Switch.
I’m playing this based on reputation alone. It’s a shame content creators and the internet in general spoiled the big surprises, but oh well; it was a free VN.
