Nintendo's Switch Online Expansion Pack tier has just added the Nintendo 64 classic Paper Mario.
This paper-inspired adventure first unfolded on the Nintendo 64 in the year 2000 and since then has gone on to spawn an entire series. The original game has also been re-released over the years on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console, and now it's the Switch's turn.
As mentioned in the updated Paper Mario Nintendo Life review:
"Paper Mario still holds up fantastically as a fun RPG that balances strategy and approachability. It's a series highlight and a perfect pick for those wanting an involving experience with a lighter tone, and one which showcases Nintendo at its innovative best."
So, will you be giving this delightful paper-themed RPG game a go on Nintendo's subscription service? Vote in our poll and comment down below.

Still waiting for Mario Golf before I take the plunge.
Still waiting until they stop adding new games so I can get the service for a month and then be done with it.
I played all the save files on the Wii VC version of the game. Might do it again!
I really want to play Paper Mario because I never really had the opportunity, but the Expansion Pass is far too expensive to be worthwhile and needs a TON of additions to be worth the price. Like, they would either need to add GB, GBA, and GC or they would need to cut the price by a good $20 a year. The value is just that bad.
@SSGodLink That would be more expensive than just buying the Expansion Pass really.
I’ll play through it again, but right now XBox Game Pass for PC is taking most of my game time.
Already started playing it on my Switch OLED! I've always loved the original Paper Mario and especially Thousand Year Door, which I purchased for Gamecube a few years back, before the big price increases.
Nope but I aint going to pay $50 a year just to play Paper Mario.
This is the most polarizing poll I've ever seen, lol.
No
I have the original on the original hardware.
Great for others that have never played it elsewhere before, all 4 of you.😜
I'll play it on Wii U Virtual Console at some point since I have it there, just haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't hate the NSO Expansion Pack, but I don't feel any need to rush to get it with its current library, especially since a lot of its games are also on Virtual Console or I can just grab the original cartridges.
On the Switch, I won't be playing. I'm not a NSO Expansion Pass subscriber. I do have the game downloaded to my Wii U though and did start my first experience with the game last year. Hopefully those playing for the first time now enjoy their experience.
Playing it? I just got done with Chapter 4!
@SSGodLink the only game I’ve seen really bad input lag in is Winback. Have you tired the service?
I prefer TTYD over the original anyways...played that one first, tried the first one and I didn't enjoy it as much. Ah well.
@link3710 The Expansion Pack can only be subscribed to for a year, no single month or 3 months plans.
This is not a joke.
Fortunately, there are other (and better) ways to play the game.
Better ways to own it too.
There should be the option:
"I've already finished the first chapter on NSO."
I’ll probably just stick to the Wii U Virtual Console version, but I might play the Nintendo Switch Online version at some point!
Since I'm not the nostalgia manipulated target audience, I won't. Also when Nintendo doesn't give a damn to emulate their own twenty years old games to run smoothly on it's current hardware, it just goes to show what they think about their customers. Then there is the ridiculous price point...
I might’ve, if I hadn’t gone through the game for the first time just last year; at this point, it feels a bit too soon to be returning, especially when I’ve got plenty of games I haven’t finished yet, sitting in my backlog.
Maybe someday, a few months from now, I might give it a go, but not right now.
Project64 counts as original hardware right
I took my family to the cinema last night and it cost me more than the expansion pass. Was it worth it? Maybe. Me and my kids have been playing some N64 classics on the Switch- is it worth the price? Well it is definitely worth more than last night and costs less. And Paper Mario is the next game we’ll play through and then again just me when the kids have gone to sleep
I'll play it at some point of course!
Got it on the Wii U, so not going to bother, plus those awful borders & the player icon are really distracting.
Yes. I cannot wait to play this fantastic game again.
To me the expansion pass will be ideal to subscribe to at the end of the Switch's life for a year when the games are a bit thin on the ground, but at the moment I can't justify it with a backlog and a year of exciting exclusives coming in 2022.
Like many, I'll have to wait to play any games in the expansion pack when the value matches the price. I have no nostalgia for N64 games (GBA/Wii were my first Nintendo consoles), most of these I played later in my life through friends and emulators.
Will play it when I get a chance, still getting used to the Animal crossing update, and have still not started the paradise DLC as yet.
I hope to try it at some point! I fell off of Origami King (lured away by other games), so I’m curious to see how the original compares.
I’ve heard The Thousand Year Door is the gold standard, so really I’d rather try that one.
Will play when it’s for sale and not this subscription nonsense. So maybe 2041?
@beazlen1 That's how I justified my PS5 with the scalper price tag last year. Last november me and my family went several days on a holiday, we had great fun but it only lasted for a few days whereas the overpriced PS5.....
/s
Does Project64 count?
I owned this game on Wii U, back when you could purchase Virtual Console titles.
Not just planning to, I already started! With all the controversy over possible input lag, I was concerned how well action commands would work. Saved in Koopa Village, and it's working just fine so far.
When they announced the Expansion Pak I did get the urge to revisit N64 games. I started playing them on Wii U virtual console mainly because I don’t want my games and save files to disappear one day if I get the Expansion Pak.
I still own the original cartridge. For some reason I prefer the N64 Paper Mario to the GameCube one, will have to do a revisit sometime because I can't understand why.
Yep!
I'm playing right now on Switch- it's so good! Idk if it's quite on the level of Thousand Year Door, but it's close. Really close.
Gotta love the expansion pack for $10/yr. Deal of the century. Idk why anyone is paying more than that. So easy to join a group of 8 and split cost.
Yeah, haven't played it and heard it's one of the best in the series. Only played Sticker Stars (yuck!) and The Origami King (good!).
@Bolt_Strike lol just lol you are wrong on so many levels lol
@JaxonH lol I have 305 games on my account I will pay the 50 a year before I share my account
@Balta666 no
@Darkyoshi98
You don't share your account. That's not how it works.
Nobody gets access to your account. No passwords have to be given out.
Research it. All it requires is the person hosting the family plan to enter your email. Done and done. Congratulations, you're now part of their family plan with Expansion Pack access. PayPal them your share of the cost once a yr.
And btw, I have over 500 games on my account (maybe more?). 3 full 1TB microSD cards of games. However much that works out to.
I wouldn't do it if it put my games in jeopardy
Already have this on Wii U and N64 so no thanks. That said, for those playing it - especially first-timers - I hope you have a blast. It's a great RPG. Not 1,000 Year Door but still pretty great.
Seeing as the price for the expansion pass is a joke for what you get then no and seeing as they aren't in any hurry to release any games for either that or even the standard online service it probably won't be worth it in my lifetime or anyone else's at this rate when compared to other subscription services out there.
still too expensive for me to consider buying the NSO expansion or even be tempted by future n64 games. id still rather pay for better online than hand-plattered emulators
Already started, this is my first time playing it.
So far so good.
@JaxonH having played PM64 and TTYD back to back, the gameplay is very close with a slight edge in TTYD's favor for combat mechanics and the writing/art style having taken a more polished shape... but in term of World exploration I feel PM64 wins out due to the way almost every regions is connected in a natural fashion and perspective that also make it feel more like you're on a natural exploration rather than moving through sideways hallways constantly as it felt like in TTYD sometimes.
It's kind of ironic that it took Origami King to give me something that was almost like the kind of world layout of PM64, especially in the early game(going from the green valley to shogun studio to the desert) with the large areas top explore and visit.
@Ludovsky I think it's just the approaches. TTYD kind of had a hub but you couldn't really get a sense of the how it all connected up as a world.
Like you had a frozen tundra (Chapter 6) supposedly right next to a forest(Chapter 2) according to the games map but in terms of how it's presented they don't connect to each other, nothing about either location suggests they neighbour each other and they're both only connected to the hub by underground pipes.
It was really abstract whereas in PM64 half the locations are connected to the hub in a non-abstract fashion and something Mario can walk to. And in TOK every single location is naturally connected to its neighbouring locations. I'd arguably say it builds on PM64 as Chapter 1 connects to Chapter 2 and Chapter 2 connects to Chapter 3. You go back to Toad Town to get to Chapter 4 , and Chapter 4 connects to Chapter 5 and 5 to 6.
In PM64 the games world has central hub Toad Town each chapter connects to Toad Town but no where else.
@faint Yes. My buddy got the expansion pass. Ocarina of Time is abysmal on input lag. Mario 64 is pretty bad too. It's really noticeable to me. There are plenty of people documenting this on Youtube as well. Doug Bowser apologized and said that Nintendo needs to improve the Expansion Pass offerings.
@SSGodLink buy an N64 and a cart? Lol, you'll be paying about 3 years worth of NSO plus expansion just to play one game.
Terrible advice buddy.
@JaxonH "so easy to join a group of 8"... lol i don't even know 4 people that i trust who own a Switch.
It's not easy at all.
@SSGodLink it's not really cost effective, you can easily find a good enough emulator and rom online to play this, you can even use the new N64 controller for it too. Not exactly rocket science.
Hell of a lot cheaper than your suggestion.
I would love to play it. I adored the game on the N64, and I was really looking forward to the idea of Paper Mario N64 portable. But this was not how I envisioned getting it. I don't want a horribly overpriced subscription just to play one game. Just let me purchase it individually.
not buying the subscription. dont need it to play this game tho, got the wii u version, lol
I originally owned the game on n64, but gave the original cartridge away to charity years ago. Picked it up a few months ago for $10 on the Wii U eShop. Still such good game. I’m glad more people are getting the chance to play it, but I’m not getting the expansion pass for the foreseeable future. Now if only Nintendo rereleased Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door…
I wish they would remaster this and the 1,000 year door and release it as a compilation for Switch. Question for those who played through Origami King: Do you gain anything from battles other than coins in that game? I stopped playing it because it looks like battles should be avoided to not take damage since you can’t get experience points.
@Gamer_Zeus
I joined a group from the forums here. We live in the age of internet, and we're on a site with thousands of other like minded individuals. If you've been a contributing member here long enough ppl get to know you, and post in the forums with friendly discussion, it doesn't take long before you become acquainted with a number of other regular members.
Several ppl have been posting in the forums that they have open slots for their family membership, and the more ppl that join, the more the cost decreases for everyone. I joined the mod Eel's family plan, then got my brother to join, and he doesn't even frequent this site. Just told him to PayPal dude $10 and send his email to him for the invite.
It really is easy if you pursue it.
@Poco_Lypso i'm in a weird position myself in that I got the game on wiiu but I have the family scale subscription and i'm this thinking of getting the expansion not to get paper Mario for myself but so that the 6 -other people currently in my family group can get access to it.
In short I can't share the WiiU edition of Paper Mario 64(and most would lack the wiiU to play it) but I can share the expansion pass version(and a friend of mine in the group has specifically lacked the ability/consoles to play Paper Mario since their childhood).
What if we played it for the first time on the Gamecube SMH
@Don they're mostly coins yeah.
Some rare times you also get items.
Imo this said when it comes to battle I still do some as they're enjoyable but I would argue that your enjoyment in the game increase a lot if you see it as closer to the design philosophies of something like Zelda than a traditional RPG.
Case in point, like Zelda you don't get "XP" from battling enemies but nonetheless cash-in currency that can be helpful to purchase various items and curative.
Similarly improving your "stats" is fine not by rote battling but usually through power ups you either purchase(some of the badges), acquire through story progression(after major bosses) or through exploration(hidden hp upgrades, like the heart fragments of Zelda).
Seen from that angle I found it a really enjoyable adventure title that particularly reward the player for careful exploration of its world and setting in ways iice rarely seen since.... well, something like Zelda.
Plus i'd add: if you ever loved Wind Waker ever so slightly, there is an area that WILL have you grinning ear to ear in this game because it's such a shout out to Wind Waker -as one could ever see in Mario.
@JaxonH thats a very particular thing and thats a bit far fetched to expect everyone to do the same thing, this site is a very small place in the grand scheme of things and im not about to bundle my lot up with some randoms over the web.
You want to do that, thats on you, personally id like to know the people id sign up with.
Anyway you can act like its some easy process to willy nilly find 8 other Switch users but you're living in a fantasy land if you think thats just some common thing people do.
@beazlen1 I feel the same way about the family entertainment. Dinner and a movie with the family easily ends up being $150. A day at the mall can cost me hundreds, mostly for non-essential items. This is pocket change for entertainment year round.
I haven't bought the expansion pass yet, but I'm pretty sure I will in 2022.
I'm on a Family plan but no one else is interested in N64 games and I'm not willing to pay 80€ by myself for the service.
Maybe after they add Majoras Mask, Banjo Kazooie, DK64, Pilot Wings, F-Zero and Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon.
That would be tempting for me.
@Gamer_Zeus
The fact I joined is proof enough it’s easy.
It’s kind of silly for someone who hasn’t tried to lament how hard it is when somebody who’s actually done it is telling you it’s not hard. And I’m not the only one who’s done it.
I didn’t join “randoms”, but people I’ve spoken to in the threads for a long time. And those who have been members of the site for years can vouch for who is trustworthy and who isn’t.
It’s pretty clear you already made your mind up and you’re just going to ignore the evidence that contradicts it. If you actually want a good deal, there are people here with open spots that are trustworthy and a lot of us can vouch for. It is easy regardless of whether you say it is or not. There were people posting on an almost daily basis advertising the fact they still have open spots. It’s practically fallen into your lap.
And I’m not sure how common it is for people to do but it is an easy thing for people to do once they learn they can do it. For the people who don’t, too bad, so sad, sucks for them. But for anyone who has the common sense to utilize the tools we have at our disposal, those people will reap the benefits, as I am reaping the benefits.
But, do what you want. It’s no sweat off my back either way.
@neufel That's another thing I'm waiting for them to change before I subscribe lol
Although I do not yet have the expansion, it’s only a matter of time before I “pull the trigger.”
I’ve said it before… I was lucky enough to get the N64 controller and I went as far as to charge it up and get it ready for use but I have yet to subscribe… I will.
I think the service is a mess though now.. it’s fractured/splintered. The options for buying just Sonic 2 are confusing… AGES, that Sega collection, soon to be Sonic Origins… it’s ridiculous. I am thankful that I get to buy it though at least. I can’t even “buy” the Nintendo offerings anymore.. so.. again Sega does what Nintendon’t.
They should’ve left Sega alone and just got GBA or GameCube.
@Ludovsky tbh, I don't consider the expansion on the expensive side. it really isn't when it comes to the asking price. Personally I just don't see any value in it for me. I rather own my games than 'rent' them. Besides, ngl, I recently estimated, I won't ever be able to get through my backlog of games, lol.
Definitely wont be playing it Via NSO due to the inability to buy the games.
I would have loved to have seen a collection with this, ttyd and maybe even super on it (kind of like 3d all stars without the limited digital BS)
With the wii VC people are still able to play the games they purchased long after the VC service ended, i cant really say the same about NSO
@Ludovsky
Thank you for the clarification. I will focus on collecting coins to buy the best items and gears available. I understand the developers want to make each new Paper Mario game unique with new concepts but I hope they bring back the RPG style battles from the first two games.
How cute.. Nintendo thinks this game alone along with their upcoming N64 games would be worth the $50 a year for the NSO Expansion Pack. I’ll still stick to the regular $20 NSO subscription thank you very much.
@Joeynator3000 I love Super Paper Mario but they will never do that style again. Happy for Dolphin.
I'm enjoying the heck out of it on my Nintendo Switch because I actually have a JOB.
Also, I first enjoyed this Masterpiece on the Nintendo 64, when I had one.
@SnesSwitch I read both your comments in a Fabio/Tommy Wiseau sort of voice. Is that accurate?
Would probably subscribe if the N64 games were included with the standard subscription but the expansion pass isn't worth it for me
@Don same tbh on an hopefull return of rpg mechanics as that was an unique and surprisingly deep system.
Though I do wonder from sequences in Origami King of some future games might not outright become an action adventure or action rpg.
@SSGodLink He apologized specifically for input lag? Do you have a link for that? Other than some graphical glitches, these are the same roms that were on the Wii and WiiU eshop. I’ve had zero issues with input lag. It’s the same as the previous digital offerings.
Haven't played this game since I got it on Wii. I think is time to give it another go.
I’m loving the game so far. It’s the most time I’ve spent on the expansion service since I bought it day 1. Looking forward to banjo kazooie too as I missed that game as well on the console back then
I don't have an online membership yet but once I get one soon, I'll be playing this immediately, although I still have on Wii U.
I'm playing it now for the first time and I'm absolutely loving it. It's aged remarkably well - maybe better than any N64 game I've played.
@JaxonH "it's not sweat off my back, I'm just going to sit and write 5 paragraphs about how easy it is to find random people online to share a Nintendo Online subscription with and how you should stupidly share bank account details with them also".
Okay bub, i will do as i please, I'll also let you do as you please and go beg people you don't know for a subscription that costs you less than 5 dollars a month.
The fact that you did it proves that you will find any goof gullible enough to share this kind of stuff with people they don't know online.
I wouldn’t give anyone here my email address, let alone sign up in a subscription and take card details for payments.
Also what are the rules on suggesting people share a membership with others on this website, are you suggesting i give my bank details to people on the Internet for a NSO subscription, how legal is that?
@Gamer_Zeus
Now you're just being willfully ignorant. You and I both know I'm not "begging" anyone for anything. And we also both know I told you it's a mod I've known here for years. Definitely isn't a "stranger".
If there's one thing I can't stand it's willfully ignorant people who lie and misrepresent to help their irrational argument seem more reasonable, because they care more about their ego than admitting they were wrong. I don't have patience for such nonsense.
You've further shown your ignorance about emails. They aren't "bank details", Einstein. Nobody can steal anything from you with a mailbox. Goodness. I refuse to believe you're this thick. It's gotta be willful ignorance.
Let me draw a picture in crayons for you so you can understand. If its someone mods and other members vouch for, you'd sooner get struck by lightning than "get scammed" over an email. What are they gonna do, spam you with marketing messages? But given your hostile responses, I can't imagine anyone would want to deal with you, so maybe you'd be out of luck after all.
Just admit it. You don't know wtf you're talking about, and you're only making yourself look more ignorant by the post. But we all knew that the minute you said "Im not sharing an account". You don't know jack about anything, but you'll sure fight tooth and nail pretending you do.
I bet that the 43% that said they ain't a subscriber truly are.i mean keeping it real I could have voted and said I wasn't a subscriber but really I am lol
@Balta666 Sure does! Playing Paper Mario on my phone is fun.
Top 5 favorite game of all time, I mean look at my username 😂😂😂. This game is what really got me into the RPG genre and without it I wouldn’t have played my current favorite game of all time, Xenoblade Chronicles . Paper Mario will always hold a special place in my heart <3
@StephenYap3 Help please. How do I change the secondary character using the switch controls. Can do so in fights but not anywhere else.
Will be very appreciative to anyone who can advise how to change the secondary character using the switch controls. Can do it in fights but not anywhere else.
@JaxonH kind of ridiculous for you to call me ignorant for not wanting to share an online subscription with a bunch of strangers online.
You seem to be a bit ignorant yourself if you think that advising people to find strangers online to share a family subscription with is sound advice.
I'm quite shocked that the moderating team here would allow you to make such a ridiculous suggestion.
@Gamer_Zeus
That's not why.
And you're reconstructing my argument in a way that's easier to attack it. They call that strawmanning. I'm not going to waste my time repeating myself. You know what I said, and it wasn't, "go ask random stranger!".
quite shocked
The mods are the ones inviting ppl lol. Which reinforces how close minded you are about this, and just how close knit this community is, but clearly you're not a part of it, and don't understand friendship, trust or integrity. No wonder you think the whole world is out to get you.
@TazDevil Tilt right on the Right Stick or hold ZR and press A.
Surprised with all the new kids on the block playing this game for the first time. One thing's for sure, they're gonna enjoy this story.
Paper Mario is cool and all but I don't want to subscribe to the expansion pack. Waste of money imo.
Can't wait to play it for the first time as soon as I'm done with Shin Megami Tensei V
@Rats Lmao what did he say? Comments were deleted
Looking forward to this! Never managed to complete it back in the day. So far, I've been giving the N64 app plenty of use. Finished four games. Three were fantastic (Ocarina of Time, Star Fox, and Sin & Punishment) and one was interesting but really janky and unpolished (Winback).
I've never been a fan of RPGs myself. But more power to those who grew up with the Paper Mario games.
