Re: Talking Point: Is It Worth Buying A Nintendo Wii U In 2021?

omalleycat215

Personally, I think the WiiU is still worth a look in 2021. The number of games ported over to the Switch keeps increasing by the day(that’s good!), but there’s still some exclusives that make the system worthwhile. I picked up a used 32 GB one along with 8 games (Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Smash, DK: Tropical Freeze, Mario 3D World, Star Fox 0, Nintendo Land, so on) for like $250 off eBay; not exactly cheap, but I have most of the system’s best games for the original price of the system itself! After a little clearance bin shopping at GameStop, I also found the original Splatoon, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Pikmin 3, and Lego City Undercover for about $35. The two Zelda HD remasters and Xenoblade Chronicles X may come to the Switch eventually, but for now most (barring Twilight Princess HD) can be found cheaply on the second hand market.

Re: Talking Point: amiibo Have Always Been Physical DLC, Skyward Sword HD Is No Different

omalleycat215

Remember Codename: STEAM, where several characters were locked behind amiibo? Heck, anyone remember Codename:STEAM in general? (Wow! What a flop! Shame I I paid full price for it.) Anyway, the game allowed you to play as Fire Emblem characters in a steampunk strategy third person shooter by scanning in the amiibo for Marth, Ike, Lucina, and I think Robin. Since amiibo were mostly used for inconsequential Smash stuff, I think those were the biggest chunks of dlc hidden behind amiibo.

Re: Review: Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir - A Delightful And Silly Mystery

Still a little annoyed with Nintendo of America for the lack of a Western physical release. This is a long unlocalized first party Nintendo game, for crying out loud! It should have a snazzy limited edition akin to the really nice Fire Emblem:Shadow Dragon 30th Anniversary edition, with a replica cartridge and faux Nintendo Power cover poster for Ninten Detective Club (or something like that). I’d even be fine if they just brought the Japanese LE over here. Anyway... I was onboard with buying both Famicom Detective Club games as soon as I saw the trailer, but I might hold off for now just in case a physical release is announced during next month’s Nintendo Direct. Both I and a younger sibling are really into Ace Attorney and other detective games, so I’d prefer to share one game between the two of us.

Re: Talking Point: Is Zelda An RPG, Or Not?

omalleycat215

I've never let classification get in my way of enjoying the Zelda series. I'd personally define it as an action adventure with RPG elements. On one hand, Zelda doesn't have common RPG trappings like EXP (except for Zelda 2) and multiple party members. On the other hand, there is a clear sense of progression as the game continues: you gain more health, magic (depending on the game), stamina, and different means of attacking through
tools. Zelda has never been as reliant on numbers as more traditional RPGs, but BotW included additional RPG elements in the form of upgradeable "magic" through the Shiekah Slate and upgradeable armor. In short, some Zelda games are more RPGlike than others.

Re: Where To Buy Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros.

omalleycat215

The Best Buys in my area have stacks of these. These didn’t sell as well as Nintendo imagined, I figure. I bought this day of release assuming that it would be strictly limited and sell out fast (like almost every other limited edition Nintendo thing), but ends up I was wrong. I almost regret picking it up; for the same price, I could now have picked up a Neo Geo mini. I hope the low sales figures don’t discourage Nintendo from doing something like a Game Boy Classic in the future.

Re: Rare's Cancelled N64 Project Dinosaur Planet Has Been Leaked Online

omalleycat215

Wow! If this was in the Nintendo Direct a few days ago (a playable Dinosaur Planet 64), that would have made the Direct for me. It happened with Star Fox 2 on the SNES Classic, so why not Dinosaur Planet? In all seriousness, I am very tempted to download this ASAP because its only a matter of time before this gets taken down by Nintendo or Microsoft. I might wait for it to be playable on emulators, but only time will tell.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light - We've Come A Long Way In 30 Years

omalleycat215

As a long term Fire Emblem fan, I’ve really been liking this game. The flaws and features missing from the game compared to the more modern FE games are obvious: little characterization (no supports), no battle summary before attacking, no visible weapon stats or movement tiles, and generally slow gameplay (having Codename STEAM flashbacks). Yet, the simplicity of the game is oddly refreshing; there are no Paralogues, Xenologues, supports or grinding to get between you and the game. The game gives you more units than you could ever put on the screen. Unlike subsequent FE games, there is no expectation to level up all of your units; the game expects you to lose a few units along the way and replace the old units with new stronger upgraded units. Strangely, I’ve found FE:SDBL to be easier than some of the more modern FE games. This is the fastest I’ve gone through a FE game, as I’m already halfway through the game in 3-4 days.

Re: Shalnor Legends: Sacred Lands Arrives This Week Channelling The Legend of Zelda

omalleycat215

I played through the entire thing a few months ago on Steam. Its... not very good. It definitely takes inspiration from Zelda, but it lacks that spark that makes Zelda special. Really, it doesn't have a spark to make it feel unique. Combat's ok (heavy emphasis on bow; does expect any Zelda-like items like a hookshot, boomerang, or anything special) but the game was a bit on the hard side. Music is blah; inoffensive, but so basic and using so few sound channels that it sounds cheap. Its hard to overstate just how important music ends up being for a game like this IMHO; its only when the music is bland that I realized how much it adds to the experience.

Really looking forward to the Crypt of the Necrodancer/Zelda crossover. Both have great music, I'm digging the aesthetic, and a Zelda roguelike sounds like something I never knew I wanted.

Re: Poll: How Excited Are You About Nintendo's E3 Games?

omalleycat215

@jjmesa16 Fates might be a good place to start. It'll be a while, though, so in the meantime you might as well get Awakening. Not all FE games follow the same continuity, so there is no material to catch up with to understand the story. Awakening is technically a distant sequel to the original FE games (where Marth was the commanding lord), but knowing their plots is unnecessary ( no real need to). Awakening does have a lot of callbacks to previous FE games (for fanservice), and Marth does appear as part of the story. Awakening was a good place to jump into the series as well, imho.Do you have a WiiU? One or two of the GBA titles are on the VC, but they are a bit harder than Awakening. Sacred Stones is the easier of the two, and more closely resembles Awakening and Fates(Hoshido). Make of this what you will.

Re: Talking Point: Super Mario Maker Stole the Show at the Nintendo World Championships 2015

omalleycat215

The Balloon Fight underground section was my favorite, personally. So unexpected!
Don't have a wiiU, so my excitement was very well tempered for Super Mario Maker. It seems better than both Mario Paint (it's spiritual predecessor) and Warioware DIY (it's Warioware equivalent), so it should be good. Hope that the community and Nintendo keep the title alive for several years. If Nintendo pulls the plug on Wii U online services in the future (like it did for many WiiU and DS games), SMM will be effectively dead. That is the issue with those sorts of games.

Re: Hyrule Warriors Is Slashing Its Way to 3DS

omalleycat215

@Kevlar44 Xenoblade Chronicles 3D was able to squeeze the massive XC onto the 3DS (although on the New, more powerful hardware). The file size came out to about 6 GB, I believe. Porting trickery should squeeze Hyrule Warroirs to a reasonable size. High capacity carts are nothing new as well, so HW3D might come on a high capacity cart. All guessing right now, so I'll wait and see.

Re: Hyrule Warriors Is Slashing Its Way to 3DS

omalleycat215

@Kevlar44 samurai Warrior Chronicles for the 3ds had a lot of content and a lot of DLC. I think that Hyrule Warriors will be able to handle the DLC. Personally, I hope that they include all of the DLC on the 3DS cart, as it has already been made for a while (something like the GoTY editions on other consoles).
