Dataminers have been getting their hands dirty with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and they’ve got some bad news – the legendary Froggy Chair isn’t in the game.
The chair has been part of the series since the very beginning but has more recently become something of a phenomenon when it comes to wholesome memes. Given the fame of this particular piece of furniture, you’d have thought it would have been a solid pick for New Horizons – but alas, it’s not in the game at present. That doesn’t mean it couldn’t be added via DLC at a later date, of course.
Here’s what the chair looks like in New Leaf, in case you were wondering:
Dataminers have also discovered that the game runs on Nintendo's Lunchpack 2 engine – the same that powers Splatoon 2, Super Mario Maker 2 and ARMS – and makes use of Havok physics middleware.

Preorder cancelled.
You can get it for £2.99 when the game releases.
This is a huge oversight and I wonder why it’s not added.
Not sure I trust it, as their list says "Labelle" instead of "Label", which we've seen in gameplay footage or screenshots (can't immediately find an example).
There's a teacup right now though. I'll live.
@Jaxad0127 Could this be a language thing?
There’s gonna be free updates so they can still add it to the game.
@Jaxad0127 Label is her real name, but she uses Labelle in almost every case.
Froggy Chair DLC incoming 🐸
But no 60fps is a shame
@Krisi I know her history, but the Direct last month specifically had her as Label: https://youtu.be/Ie4WZCLbtVs?t=1168
Noooo no more toots :'<
How can the best Animal Crossing game ever made not have the Froggy Chair? Darn you Coronavirus!
The weirdest thing is that for Villager and Isabelle’s Final Smashes, there’s an HD model of Froggy Chair being thrown in while the house/town hall are being built. Why didn’t they just ask to use the asset?
I haven't seen Kapp'n in any of the footage yet, either. I hope he makes it in; his sea chanties going to and from the island in New Leaf always cracked me up.
Is there a "froggy chair" amiibo card or frog-like AC amiibo? I bought an amiibo I thought was a frog but it's a turtle. Which is fine, I like turtles more, but he still looks like a frog.
Anyway, they've already said updates are coming, so...
@Jaxad0127 That's... odd. Possibly an oversight even.
Travesty.
Preorder cancelled.
If updates are on the way (and this is exactly the sort of game that lends itself to DLC in so many ways), then I imagine Nintendo wants to keep at least a few big names/items in reserve to headline such content and help prompt users to purchase it. It can be debated whether that's cool or not (yes, the game looks to be amazingly deep as is, but having to perhaps pay to get stuff that's been part of previous entries may turn some folks off). And also, consider that even this is pure speculation; we have no idea yet what Nintendo's long-term plans are for this game.
Time for Alex to drop the score down to a 9 with a con being a lack of the froggy chair.
Do people just play games anymore?
WHAT? This is egregious.
the chair is probably in the game. it just may be lost. so lets look at the bright side, we still have hundreds of other furniture to pick from.
Aww...and I just got one in New Leaf too.
@mist Why do you want a 60 fps in a very very slow paced game?
This is not DOOM.
@mist so yeah... this game is basically sims.
Games like that don't benefit from faster frame rates. You can literally have it at 15 fps and you wouldn't notice and it wouldn't make a difference.
Side note: hope anyone who plans to buy the game, enjoys it.
change.org here we come!
You have to capture frogs first and then craft the chair. Welcome to the new world. Now excuse me while I go sleep on my shark bed.
The game isn't even released and you're already ripping it apart instead of playing it.
@Damo The froggy chair has been in the series since the very first game.
Does it at least have a TV that looks like an apple?
@mystman12 Apologies, that's fixed!
@rjejr Do you mean Kapp'n? He's actually a kappa, a Japanese youkai that lives in rivers, but he was localized as a turtle, because most people outside of Japan (especially in 2002) don't really know what a Kappa is, and since it's a water-dwelling creature with a shell, the easiest thing to say was that he's a turtle.
Same with Tom Nook. He was localized as a raccoon, but is actually a tanuki, a different animal, that's only really known in Japan. They also have special powers in Japanese mythology, like turning leaves into money and various items to fool random people. That's where the whole thing comes from that items in Animal Crossing are represented and stored as leaves.
This is outrageous! It's unfair! How can you have an animal crossing game and not have froggy chair?
And I thought Dexit was bad.
@TeslaChippie I see it as a continuation of her story. In City Folk, she and the other two were in a sort of feud, because she rejected her home and her birth name to work for Gracie, a big brand corporation, and changed her name to Labelle. In New Leaf, she’s back to being friendly with her sisters and helping the family business in her own department. Maybe by now she’s realized she wanted to stick to her roots. (Pretty common narrative for adult siblings honestly)
@Damo Now you just need to hope Froggy Chair forgives you for making such an error.
Screw the chair, I want my gyroids!! >.<
@Krisi Thanks for all that. Tom Nook as a tuniki yiukai mKes perfect sense.
Capp'n actually has 3 names on the box, as did several of the others, which I've always assumed were English and Japanese but I've never bothered to learn the 3rd one. Guess I better before the game gets here.
There was this really fugly, snotty frog in New Leaf that I despised. Spent days hitting her with my shovel til she finally flounced off.
I never really got the obsession with the frog chair. It was cute, I guess, but one was enough.
This... is a thing? I put like 300 hours in New Leaf and played with several friends regularly and I don't think anyone made a big deal about it.
I'm more familiar with the "television that looks like an apple meme," but that's mostly because Jim Sterling used it all the time.
we got the good ending eventually
