If you managed to catch the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct earlier on, you likely saw the segment where the new game style based on Super Mario 3D World was revealed.
If you pause around the 9-minute mark of the video, you'll notice there's a vacant space next to the new theme on display. Noticeably, the title in this menu is labeled "Extra Game Styles" suggesting there'll eventually be multiple other game themes to select from.
At this stage, there's no guarantee, but if more styles are on the way, we can't help but wonder what these designs would be based on and if Nintendo would release them as free updates or paid downloadable content.
What do you think about this? Would you like to see more styles added to the game? Tell us below.

Needs a Game Boy style, based on Super Mario Land 1 and 2.
This is absolutely guaranteed. Nintendo cares a lot about their menus in games; they wouldn't just leave that spot blank.
Yeah, I bet there are going to be more game styles post-launch. SMB2 is very different from most Mario platformers so that would be a logical choice. Maybe there could be styles based on the other 3D games like 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy.
@BlueRobin04 thats a valid argument. I didnt noticed until you said it but is true.
At the very least, the Allstars template should be one.
Crosses fingers for Hotel Mario template
On a serious note, it'll be neat to see what other series templates are added.
Man, I really wish they showed us at least ONE other new style though. I wonder if other new styles will be paid DLC or if it'll be free content updates a la Splatoon and Mario Tennis Aces...
Super Princess Peach DS style.
Mario can feel happy (Flying and spinning in the air), gloomy (crying while running faster and can grow sprouts by his tears), upset (Fiery Barrier that protect him + Stomping walk) and delighted (HP recovery)
@victordamazio I really like that idea. Has to be green screen though
I’m usually not one for jumping to conclusions, it’s how rumors start. But the menu literally says “Extra Game Styles”. Plural. If Nintendo doesn’t have additional styles planned (whether from the start, as a free update, or as paid DLC), they honestly were pretty irresponsible in their wording. I’d say this is a safe assumption and, should it prove to be false, Nintendo would deserve the fallout for essentially... “leading the witness”? There’s strong implications here.
I really want Super Mario Bros 2 style!
Super Mario Galaxy style when?
SUPER MARIO BROTHERS 2 STYLE BABBYYYYYYYYYYY
Would love either Super Mario Bros. 2 or Super Mario Odyssey. Odyssey is far from my favorite 3D Mario, but you could have some pretty remarkable levels that utilize the hat-throwing mechanic, and a New Donk City world theme would be super cool. It also looks like there could be more room for world themes under the drop menu; I'm still holding out for a tropical and volcano theme. Also, I would absolutely love to be able to switch to the 16-bit Mario All-Stars version of Mario 1 and 3, PLEASE, NINTENDO! But the content on offer is staggering, and I'm immensely excited.
Since 3D World requires you to start from scratch, I'm hoping SMB2 USA gets in.
if they i do, i would like to see Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy next
Peach is kind of missing from the reconstruction of her own castle...thinking SMB2USA/DDPJP.
I'd adore a Super Mario Land 2 option. Or, hear me out:
Super Mario Land 3
Did anyone else notice the “Super Famicom” logo randomly appear when the car Mario can drive was first shown? It was so out of place and didn’t seem to fit with anything they showed in the whole direct... maybe a teaser for SNES games coming to Switch?
Skip to around the 11 minute mark to see it for yourself. When they introduce the “Koopa Troopa Car”.
I could see Super Mario Bros 2, Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario Odyssey coming to this.
Paper Mario would be amazing.
I just watched the Direct. Wow.
When Nintendo goes 110%, they remind everybody why they’re the best. The game is astounding because it’s so full of content. There’s without question I’m buying it Day 1.
I doubt it would ever come to Super Mario Maker 2, but if they ever made a Super Mario Maker 3, I would love for it to not only include the previous game styles, but include the 3D gameplay styles seen in Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. They could call it Super Mario Maker 3D.
@ReaderRagfish
Oh man, I've got so many ideas for math equations to try. Don't get my hopes up.
I didn’t see actual video of 3D worlds in the direct. Is this something to be shown later or did I miss something
I hope you’re all correct! Lol
@Mgene15: There is a new style based on 3D World. It's apparently different from the other styles, but is still 2d sidescrolling.
@Everyone_Else: I could see SMB2, SMW2: Yoshi's Island, SML/SML2/WLSML3, and maybe Galaxy.
I know it's not likely, but I would love if Nintendo went crazy and added styles from other series. Just imagine how cool a Donkey Kong Country style would be!
@McDerbert I saw it and thought maybe it had something to do with that car. Otherwise, it was quite random and odd.
I'd be surprised if there are no DLC themes, considering the magnitude of this game. 3D World being its own separate category bodes well for SMB2, since they both have wildly different features than the other styles. Although, I don't think the plural "Extra Styles" necessarily confirms anything. The upper section has "Game Style" in the singular, even though there are four options present.
Nevertheless....fingers crossed for SMB2 and Land 1+2 styles.
@McDerbert Yea it was odd. This is a stretch, but maybe it was a allusion to Mount Must Dash (the Super Mario Kart-inspired level) in 3D World?
Hotel Mario style when?
Super Mario Bros. 2 (U.S.A.)
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Gold Coins
Super Mario Bros. (Super Mario All-Stars ver)
These are the ones i would love to see!!!!! But as a wishful thing, i would love to see a style based on the 2D sections of Super Mario Odyssey!!!
It would be really cool!
Mario Land 1 and 2 would be nice. Mario 2 (USA) would be the best.
I imagine they will add more themes and it will be a mix of free updates and DLC.
I would absolutely love to see a SMB2 theme. It is my favorite NES Mario game. It's the most adventure like of the 2D Mario games. I could imagine some fantastic levels being created around those mechanics, such as hiding mushrooms in subspace and creating huge fortresses with locked doors. Probably wishful thinking.
SMB2/SMUSA style, yes.
SML style as well! Give me some Sarasaland / Black and White whaaat?
3D World style was still sidescrolling even though it did a touch of the 3D space stuff… could we see other 3D Mario styles compressed into a 2D space?
I’d prefer Mario 64, but would be happy with Mario Bros 2.
Will Nintendo drop optional DLC?
Super Mario Land (GB) would be welcome
SMB2 (NES)
Seems like a super long shot, but paper Mario style would be hilarious. I like the notion of Mario Land style as well.
Hope it is Super Mario All-Stars/Advance versions of SMB1 and SMB3 (+ SMB2 if that were to be added) or that this would be some unlock in the game.
Why did you make several articles on the game after the Direct instead of gathering all the important info in one piece? I understand if it was a regular Direct, but this was just about one game.
That said... this game looks cool! I'm still not convinced it's for me, but with all the stuff being added, it seems like a full-packed experience!
Needs a wind waker tie in, a no more heroes crossover, a smash bros style, a Bayonetta guest appearance, a hollow knight revisited, a steamworld drawing style, an n64 poly style, and a super Nintendo donkey kong guest style.
I always thought this way with Splatoon on Wii U where it shows the two current levels with a space underneath clearly designed for a third.
I figured along with everything else they did with that game to restrict it at first and then roll out over time that cycling between 3 levels would be a thing once they got the network infrastructure ironed out. And then it never happened. Was that third slot used in any of the other modes? I only ever played the normal splat zone or whatever.
I'm just gonna make a wild guess list of games they can use for different asthetics:
Super Mario Bros 2
Paper Mario (like a crafted world type look)
Super Mario RPG
Gameboy Mario
Yoshi's Island
Peach's game (for the DS)
In terms of other games I could see SM2 working (though I'd really want to be able to play as Peach or Luigi!)
As far as what I haven't seen from this one that I'm genuinely bummed I haven't (because it seems obvious) is the inclusion of both boomerang bros and a boomerang bro suit, a hammer bros suit, frog suit and tanooki suit. (Though that one hopefully will be in 3D world) There is also no Penguin suit. I'd LOVE to see it if they added the power ups to one style.
I saw that somebody mentioned All Stars and I'd be totally down with that. Either ape the style of the original SNES All Stars, or remake them using 3D models and stuff but looking like all stars and then add in like ... EVERYTHING. I doubt they will... still. I'd love to be able to switch from Cape to Racoon to Flying Squirrel, to Rabbit Ear Mario. That would make my nostalgic heart burst.
With the Zelda reveals in the last two Directs I was half expecting that they would show a Zelda 2 style at the end.
Yeah. I could go for a Super PaperMario theme (with 3-D flipping? Come on, Nintendo!). Paper powers like floating and rolling would be cool, too.
It would be nice if they have saved SMB2 for E3. Nintendo have a habit of showing so much we assume we know everything and then they reveal something else lol.
Looks to me like there will be more, but for some sad reason in my mind they will be paid DLC instead of free like the original.
They didnt say anything about the Amiibo costumes
Super Yoshi maker?
@victordamazio OMG this, you sir have the right idea! super mario land themes would be great! (bosses included)
@MarioLover92 I’d love to see SMB2. Though it would need to be a pretty big expansion.
I wouldn’t mind seeing an original theme or seeing Galaxy, though that may be hard to pull off in 2d
@GrailUK Yep, that's my guess. SMB2 style is actually one of the most wanted features for SMM right now.
I could also see something like DLC game styles / themes happening.
For instance a Zelda 2 style. I'd like to see that.
@Bunkerneath There is no mention of Amiibo support anywhere on the SMM2 webpages or in the video's. I don't think it will happen.
Not going to happen, but I’d love a super paper Mario theme...
hoping Costume Mario returns on the SMB1 theme!
I think it'll either be Odyssey or SMB2 (USA) with a reveal at the end of the Invitational.
Really hoping this doesn't mean paid DLC, as it'd split the community.
Mario galaxy? Sunshine? Mario RPG?! Please ad something like that lol.
Smashbros? Lol wishful thinking.
Super Mario Bros 2/USA pretty pleeeeeeease.
Sign me up for Galaxy or Odyssey. The 3D themes would be a lot more interesting because they have a lot more diverse mechanics.
@Quarth More ad impressions, etc. But also we can talk about different features separately in the comments, which I think is nice. Otherwise, they just get lost in a giant thread and one feature tends to dominate the conversation.
I’d love to see a GameBoy one, especially with GameBoy Color toggles for those weird pinks and teals!
If we’re looking at ones that give a completely new rule set though I’m thinking Yoshi’s Island!
@eSocrates If I remember correctly, Splatfests had 3 levels in rotation instead of 2 so they probably used that extra slot.
@FTPinkRabbit If they do paid DLC it might only affect the Creator mode and not the playing mode. So you could pay for the DLC and create using all of the new stuff but a person without the DLC would be able to play it just fine because the materials are built into the executable, the DLC just unlocks it in creator mode.
I honestly feel like Super Mario Bros 2 would be the only option besides possibly a paper Mario Style. If everyone is paying attention, you'll notice that all the styles are 2D side-scrolling and none of them are 3D. Sure there's some foreground and background trickery going on but none of the game styles are 3D, so Mario 64 or Galaxy or sunshine or Odyssey are all not probable
If they wanted to really go retro they could have a Donkey Kong game style.
maybe they will add a NES remix style or SNES remix style. or some theme resembling mario vs donkey kong minis on the move.
this game is so big nobody could complain about paid dlc plus with the likely large install base they would be silly not to cash in on dlc
Super Mario 2 should be added as an extra style!!!
Can we please have Sunshine? I'd kill for a FLUDD pack. (Though it'd feel weird if that didn't require a shoulder button to use.)
@Deku-Scrub Your avatar fits the comment perfectly. Also came here to say the same thing.
Nice. Since SM3DW style is an extra style with unique features, that gives me great hope for a SMB2 style at last. SML1, SML2, and Yoshi's Island should all be fair game too. It's a stretch, but maybe even Wario Land might have a shot. Perhaps we'll get an all original style unlike anything seen before... I cannot wait.
@Jimsbo That style is technically the Super Mario Bros. Theme. Small Mario is the same sprite used in Donkey Kong.
I would like to see Super Mario 64 added as an extra game style, as well as Super Mario Galaxy 1, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Sunshine. I believe that will make the game even more fun to play
