Re: Site News: Nintendo Life Turns 18 Today

jacksayspurple

Good grief, this makes me feel old. I've been visiting this site pretty much daily since it was WiiWare World. What a journey. You guys have come such a long way, really picking up the torch from the decline of Nintendo magazines. Happy Birthday, Nintendo Life - hope you're giving all your writers a bonus, Hookshot Media!

Re: Game Freak Prefers To "Implement New Things Fairly Gradually" In Pokémon

jacksayspurple

Not sure how I feel about how much of this interview Nintendo Life has cribbed from Metro between this and the previous post about Pokémon Snap... It's a great interview and it's worth reading it's in original context. Always think it's kind of shady when media outlets take a huge amount of content from other media outlets. Even with the (minimal) credit, it's not a great look.

Re: The Detective Pikachu Movie Reviews Are In, And It's Actually Pretty Mixed

jacksayspurple

I don't think you can really justify saying "The more film-centric sites, who we'd assume don't have quite the same knowledge of the Pokémon franchise, have commonly argued that the acting of Ryan Reynolds is the saving grace here, with the Pokémon not being particularly special."

It's pretty bold of a site which reviews things to call into question the ability of other reviewers to review they respective fields. It's fair to say the wider media has a better handle on reviewing films than the gaming media. Frankly, opinions of the likes of Empire and Variety are worth far more in this context than Serebii or Polygon. I wouldn't go to Empire for their review of a Pokémon game, but I wouldn't go to Nintendo Life for movie reviews.

The suggestion seems to be that the wider media doesn't understand Pokémon well enough to be able to review this movie for all it's merits. But I'd argue that the gaming media don't understand movies well enough to be able to review it.

Having seen it, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that the film media's impressions are more accurate than the gaming media's. The script is messy, a lot of the acting pretty poor, and there aren't nearly as many different Pokémon in it as the trailers imply. As a big Pokémon fan I expected better but feared worse. It's good fun, but it's hardly perfect. 3/5 is a very fair score.

Re: Random: Nintendo Fixed One Man's Out Of Warranty, First-Gen 3DS For Next To Nothing

jacksayspurple

This is very sweet. I've never had such luck. I had to send my New 3DS into the Nintendo Service Centre and they kept it for 4 months from October 2016 to January 2017, then tried to charge me £80 for repairs despite it being in warranty (and me having sent them evidence of that). When I explained it was in warranty and so I shouldn't have to pay they agreed and I got my console back within a week, with confirmation that they'd repaired it. As it turned out they had not repaired it and it's still glitchy to this day.
I was pretty disappointed because I expected better from Nintendo.

Re: Hands On: The Future Of Gaming Is Cardboard, Thanks To Nintendo Labo

jacksayspurple

@ShadJV man, you're so right. I mean, they weren't developing ANY decent games while they were doing amiibo and Nintendo Classic Minis were they? Oh, except BOTW I guess... And Mario Odyssey... And Splatoon 2... Oh, and ARMS... And Samus Returns... But aside from those critically acclaimed gems, they've done like, nothing, right? Amiibo and the mini classics have been SUCH a distraction.

Re: Nintendo Reveals More Details About its Paid Online Service

jacksayspurple

I'll probably only get the online thing for Splatoon 2 or if they release a main series Pokémon game for the Switch.
Controversial opinion though: I really don't care about these 'classics'. I appreciate that there are those who do but personally these aren't the games I grew up with (being born in 1993, I really only got into gaming in the late nineties and even then it was mostly Pokémon and those terrible movie tie-ins that children like) so I'm not sure why Nintendo is so obsessed with offering them as rewards for things. It was the same with the 3DS ambassadors prize. As much as we might venerate these games the fact is that there's a huge portion of gamers who have no fond memories or rose-tinted glasses about them, to whom they're nothing more than blocky, ugly, and out-of-date. I'd be much more interested if Nintendo were to offer old games in the form of Gameboy Advance, Gamecube, Wii, and DS games as rewards for purchasing an online membership or, better yet, discounts on brand new games!

Re: Rumour: Artwork for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Posted Online

jacksayspurple

I think the game itself is real but these posters etc are fake. Mario and his pals' art style looks subtly different from what you'd expect and given how exacting we know Nintendo has been with their characters in the past (Bowser on Wreck-It Ralph and Donkey Kong on Pixels) I'd be surprised if they would let that fly.
In addition, the press documents with spelling mistakes? I've seen plenty of press releases in my time and none with glaring spelling errors.

I don't know. I'm not a fan of turn-based strategy myself so I probably wouldn't bother buying it, but it sounds like a fun mash-up for those who are! Plus, Nintendo being willing to open up and share their IPs for projects like this can only lead to more awesome collaborations in the future!

Re: Soapbox: How The Evolution Of Pokémon Can Unexpectedly Influence Play-Through Experiences

jacksayspurple

I've never really enjoyed the Pokemon series for the battles. In fact, if anything I find the battling aspect somewhat tedious. Instead I tend to focus my attention on catching 'em all!
I've completed the Pokedex in every game since Generation 4 and that's the only time I've really used breeding and all those mechanics. I've attempted the Masuda Method various times to get shinies, but aside from that I'm in it for the adventure and catching all the 'mon, not for battling at all really!

Re: This Is What Happened When A Kid Pitched Super Mario Bros. 4 To Nintendo 25 Years Ago

jacksayspurple

I remember that when I was a kid, my brother and I designed a tonne of different Pokemon and sent them off to Nintendo. They probably binned them all but we received a similar letter and were told that our designs had been filed away for if the creators of Pokemon ever ran out of ideas. We even got sent a very early issue of Official Nintendo Magazine! Very cute! If you ever see a fire-type Cheetah Pokemon, that's one of mine! Haha!

Re: Video: YouTube's Gaming Historian Takes Offense At One Element Of Mario's Game Boy Past

jacksayspurple

I was very tempted to agree with everyone else in this discussion and say 'No, this isn't offensive, political correctness gone mad etc', but then I thought to myself, as a gay man would I find a depiction of a 'gay Mario' dressed in stereotypical effeminate clothing or something like that offensive? Potentially. I don't know.
But I think it's very easy to make a blanket judgement on something like this and say 'Yes, this is definitely offensive' or 'No, this is definitely not offensive.' Taking offense at something is such a personal thing. If the guy in the video finds these images offensive then that's his right and it's fine, if other people don't, that is their right too. Ultimately though, the only response I can find to either argument is, who cares? Everyone has opinions on things and most of them don't mean much.

Re: Parent Trap: Forging A Link Between Worlds

jacksayspurple

Not sure I'd quite describe the different perceptions of video-games as 'the biggest challenge in a family', but it certainly an interesting issue! When I was a kid, I never had any home consoles until I was bought the original Xbox for Christmas one year - my parents have never been gamers so I grew up in a video-gameless house, but I'm a massive gamer now. It's great that these kids get to experience these games for themselves and form their own memories of the games that are coming out this time. Plus it's adorable how Zelda inspired this little dude! So cute!

Re: Wii Sports Club Takes The Competition Online With HD Visuals And Wii MotionPlus Support

jacksayspurple

@element187 I didn't call you any names, I was just pointing out that with your comment you seemed to be trying to belittle my thoughts and make me look stupid, and in doing you managed to make yourself look the fool. If I've misinterpreted your comment then please accept my sincerest apologies. The internet can be a dark and scary place filled with nasty, cold, rudeness and as such it can often be hard to distinguish between that and good natured replies. If your comment was the latter then I am most sorry, if it was the former, then I am not.

Re: Peter Molyneux Reveals His Favourite Zelda Title Of All Time

jacksayspurple

I have to agree with him. I'm not sure whether it's because Twilight Princess was my first console Zelda experience, but I have always thought it has been the most epic one which I've ever played. Everyone criticizes the look of it, but I think it's beautiful, the story is focussed yet interesting, and the size of it meant there was always a lot to discover. I only wish I'd played Ocarina of Time first so that I would have understood the references...

Re: Satoru Iwata Cites Poor Basic Wii U Sales To Rule Out Price Cut Benefits

jacksayspurple

Iwata is kidding himself. The basic pack didn't sell for a few reasons.
1) The memory on the system was a joke. 8gb?! Seriously?
2) The Basic version was in White. People prefer black consoles.
3) The Premium edition had a tonne more stuff bundled in for the price you paid.

The Basic edition was NEVER going to sell as well as the Premium edition, and using its not selling as a reason to say 'Price isn't an issue' is completely stupid and ludicrous. I agree with Nintendo on most things, but these excuses over the price of the Wii U are insane.

Re: CoroCoro Reveals Details on New and Existing Pokemon

jacksayspurple

I really really like the designs of the Pokemon this generation! Then again, I'm not so hot on the Cotton Candy Pokemon... didn't the Vanillite line teach Nintendo the perils of making confectionery based 'mon?! Haha! Still gonna be catching one though, after all, GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL, POKEMON!

Re: Fan Campaign Starts for Princess Zelda to be Given a "Stronger" - Perhaps Playable - Role

jacksayspurple

I know she got captured by Ganondorf and everything, but I genuinely thought Zelda put in a pretty strong effort in The Twilight Princess. She was there with a sword fighting off the forces of evil and as far as I remember she only gave up and allowed Ganondorf to win because she thought it'd spare her people. And then she busted out the Goddess' Bow in the final battle, and... man, I gotta play this game again!!

Re: Talking Point: The Wii U's Third-Party Concerns Are Brushed Off By 3DS

jacksayspurple

Genuinely starting to believe that the media is trying to create this impression that Wii U is a massive failure in order to force Nintendo to start publishing games on other systems. I mean, most of these people grew up with Nintendo games, but now as adults, to be a Nintendo fan, is seen by a lot of people as something of a joke. So pushing Nintendo to release their games on Xbox and Playstation seems to be the best of both worlds. Definite conspiracy theory right here.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Is Open to More Female Heroines When the Gameplay Structure Fits

jacksayspurple

Nice that Miyamoto considers these things. Even nicer that he considers themes such as sexual identity given the recent controversy over Tomodachi Collection. That said, wouldn't a gay man be more interested in rescuing another man than a lesbian woman and vice versa? Haha! As a gay guy myself, I think I'd rather play as a gay character rescuing my lover! But awwwww! It's still nice! Gotta love Miyamoto! What a sweetheart!
