Re: Super Nintendo World Will Be Ready In Time For The 2020 Tokyo Olympics

iMarkU

@VHSGLITCH Nintendo is not responsible for these attractions, Universal Creative is. And when it comes to innovation, be assured this land will bring tons .

@Mrtoad
Universal announced the coaster last year shortly after tearing down Dueling Dragons. But its true that they haven't announced anything outside that it will be a family coaster. But since Universal is a leaking bucket anyway, we all know what they are building.

Re: Yoshi’s Crafted World Launches Exclusively For The Switch On 29th March

iMarkU

@invictus4000 remember that Nintendo announced the Switch reveal trailer 24 hours in advance and they just randomly revealed the system. Every other company would host an event with the press for these kind of events.

Or the reveal of Nintendo Labo which was stating that they were revealing it later that day. In other words: Nintendo gad a perculiar way to reveal things, and they tend to do their own thing.

Re: Pokémon Quest Mobile Version Rakes In $8 Million After First Month

iMarkU

@Equinox Well they are on top of their themepark games. In the end it looks like Universal is building a remarkable piece of themepark history. Nintendo wouldn’t be able to build this on its own. But anyway that wasn’t the topic. Its not either A or B to succeed, Nintendo wants both of them to succeed.

Re: Pokémon Quest Mobile Version Rakes In $8 Million After First Month

iMarkU

@Equinox I don’t see the problem with expanding your brand awareness through movies and themeparks. A movie based on a game doesn’t make it automatically garbage,the lego movie is based on a toy and the whole Pirates of the Caribbean franchise on an attraction. You just need a good story and set of characters, and Mario already has the second one.

Succeeding in mobile does not mean the board will pressure Nintendo to stop focusing on their console games. Nintendo needs their core business (especially hardware) to survive, its their biggest incomed. Mobile, movies and themeparks are only there to increase sales of their core business. (Also Nintendo went to Universal while I hoped it would go to Disney)

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Will Feature 103 Unique Stages

iMarkU

@huyi Amiibo's are actually pretty interesting in this game, they are like Pokémons that you can train and they adapt to your fighting style. Not only that, they become reaaaaaaly good. I think an amiibo made it into the (half) finale of an esport competition?

Re: Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Videos Show How Different Pokémon Types Will Follow The Trainer

iMarkU

@Zuljaras Yes Pokémon is still a huge franchise. But it is not about the sales today, it is about down the line ikn 40 years. Let me get some statistics to support my point, underneath you see the demography for Pokémon Go. Something attracts your attention? The age. The game is the most popular with the age group that grew up with Pokémon (in other words, it came out when they were a child).
https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/0*WnT4PohwZGBJJnOe.png

Then even more importantly, look at the following three screenshots which show the demography of three Pokémon games in chronicle order.
http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/dipe_chart_thumb.jpg
http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/hgss_chart_thumb.jpg
http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/b_w_chart_thumb.jpg

What is interstering about these three charts? The target group moves along with the games, but it doesn't catch up with new young players.

Siliconera already posted their concers over the franchise back in 2014 (link at the bottom of the comment), but the following quote attracted my attention:

"The fact that more and more adults are playing Pokémon with each successive game tells us that the series’ existing audience is getting older. Eventually, these fans will end up outgrowing the series. Thus, in order for Pokémon to keep growing, the only solution is to keep bringing in newer, younger fans to replace the ones that leave. However, the fact that sales are in decline suggests that this isn’t happening, and that’s a cause for concern. Pokémon—and just about any franchise that sells millions, really—has always relied on younger players to maintain growth over the years. When younger players stop coming, you’re in trouble."

Bottom line, Pokémon needs to attract kids and this game hopes to introduce Pokémon in a "light" way to all the new players, including everyone who plays Go, in the hope they will also buy the core game next year.

Re: Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Videos Show How Different Pokémon Types Will Follow The Trainer

iMarkU

@Zuljaras why don’t you want to associate this with the mobile game. If Nintendo didn’t put GO in the name it would suggest this is a core title, while it tries to do something different. Its a more kid friendly version of the franchise. I wrote it somewhere else before, but the Pokémon franchise is having huge problems with aging of their target group. Go is aimed to introduce a new group of children to the franchise, instead of catering to the already existing base. In other words: you are not the target group of this game.

Re: GameStop Reveals That Switch Sales Doubled In The Week After E3

iMarkU

@Zuljaras Sometimes people hold back their purchase until they see more of new games. In this case, Smash could have been this little push that pushed them over the edge. Don't forget hardware sales are not just based on upcoming games. They are based on all the available games plus the upcoming one. Zelda and Mario included.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's E3 2018 Went Big On Smash Bros. But Left Us Wanting More

iMarkU

I feel the name should have giving it away, this is just another Nintendo Direct which coincides with the E3. Nintendo has shown in the last couple of years that they rather announce their games spread out through out the year instead of all at once during the E3, some of them don't even appear on the E3 (3DS Wario ware, Luigi's Mansion and Tropical Freeze being some examples). That also explains why they announced so many games last time during the Nintendo Direct. Seriously, that Nintendo Direct had more content than this one. If Nintendo really wanted to go out on the E3 they could have saved: Pokémon Lets Go, Warioware, Luigi's Mansion, Bowsers inside story, Undertale AND Smash Bros.

And a side note to express my feelings towards the E3 in general. The event is changing and has been for a very long time. Companies much rather prefer to announce their games on an own event/moment so they don't steal spotlight from each other. The entire E3 was light on games this year, they are just being announced more spread out throughout the year.

Re: Bill Trinen Discusses Smash Bros. Invitational 2018, Won’t Disclose Whether It’s A Port Or New Game

iMarkU

@Not_Soos
I am 99% sure Smash will launch in the middle of november. It is Nintendo’s favorite block to launch games just in time for the holiday season and just after Black Friday.

And in a comment on the term ‘port’. I don’t get why we are all suddenly asking this question. Would we ask the same when a new Mario, Zelda, Pikmin or Animal Crossing game gets announced? Besides, this game could engine wise still be a ‘port’, the content can be new.

@Kamalen
Guys this is the right answer^ and people need to stop being this damn salty about it. Its a practice that 99% of the developers do all the time.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Creator Masahiro Sakurai Will Appear In Nintendo's E3 Presentation

iMarkU

@thesilverbrick Yoshi for the Wii U was shown off in January 2013 with just images. It eventually got a new reveal at E3 2014 (with demo) and got released shortly after the E3 2015. This Yoshi game got a reveal early 2017, and a demo on the e3 2017. I strongly believe the game will be coming out as the next big release after Mario Tennis in july/august.

There is nothing announced for after that, but don’t forget Nintendo likes to keep games under wraps until the very last moment. Announcing games on the E3 and releasing them later that year is a common strategy for them.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Plunges Amid Reports That 'Quality Of Life' Project Is Dead

iMarkU

@Findonovan95 @NewAdvent
Quality of Life was never meant to be a "gaming" product. It was supposed to be a secondary revenue stream for Nintendo focussing on products which increase the quality of life. The sleep analyser being the only announced product. I think Iwata wanted to use his knowledge around the succes of Wii Fit to produce more products which have ties with gamification to increase somebodies QOL. Could and still can be a really popular product category. Gamification is booming right now in all sectors.

Re: Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee Launch Shipments Will Be Larger Than Any Switch Game To Date

iMarkU

@AwokenZoe you don’t have to buy it. But it is the design philosophy. The same reason why The Sims belongs on a computer, Wii Sports on a motion based console and Animal Crossing on a handheld as well. There is difference between handheld and console experiences, which is one of the reasons why the PS Vita failed. It tried to emulate a console experience on a handheld, while consumers expect a handheld experience on a handheld and vice versa for the console. Pokémon just suits a console less than a handheld, because one of its core elements is social competition and real life social dynamics . Don’t forget Pokémon is a Japanese game, a country where people take handhelds with them everywhere including work, school, public transport and going out.

A country where handhelds are way bigger and people take them to play their own games with each other. Versus the console which is a device where you play one person’s game together. In other word, you as the guest lose the progress.

Re: Video: Get Another Glimpse Into The Wacky Levels Of Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion

iMarkU

@BigKing The goal of the game is not exploration. The single player of Splatoon is an action platformer with an emphasis on the shooting mechanic. Occasionally throwing a puzzle element in there. You seem to miss the goal of the single player mode. It is a platformer game which teaches the player mechanics, challenges them practice them and discover new weapons. It makes the player aquinted with new weapons
Are enemies dumb? No, they are just enemies like Goomba and Koopas. You shouldn't compare them to, as example Octolings, which are like human players.

When it comes to level design, Splatoon uses a very similar setup to Mario. Introduce a mechanic, practise the mechanic, master the mechanic and twist it. The levels introduce: mats, bombs, flying enemies, ground enemies, enemies with shield, boost pads, ink rails, sponges, moving platformers etc etc.

Would it be awesome for Splatoon to have an exploration part as well? Yes. But you should make a different mode for that. Compare this mode to the 2D Mario Bros series, while a 64/Mario Odyssey sounds more like what you want.

Re: You Can Start Building Your Nintendo Account Family Group Ahead Of The Switch Online Launch

iMarkU

@McHaggis Ah that explains. The FAQ on the website of Nintendo says:

Q: If I own multiple Nintendo Switch systems, will I need a separate membership for each one?
A: No. Nintendo Switch Online can be used on any device by signing in with the Nintendo Account that purchased the membership.

It sounds like its tied to the account, however if this is the case and you only have one Switch, I would recommend just making a "online play"-account and buy it on that account for 20 euros.

Re: The Virtual Console Isn't Coming To Switch, Nintendo Confirms

iMarkU

@impurekind
I kind of expect this to happen actually. You get 20 games for a monthly subscription with more games to come over time, isn't that basically an on demand service? And even though an on demand service sounds 'cheaper' to us, its actually more expensive over time. For Nintendo having peopel paying for an on demand service through subscription means they have a constant flow of money coming in versus the upfront payment for virtual console games. I think this is mostly a business move, but something that I prefer over the old system if it means that I get NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube games for 20 (and increasing to 60 euros over time?) per year.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Switch And Splatoon 2 Tournaments Will Take Place At E3 This Summer

iMarkU

@AlphaElite
The previous Smash Bros is from 2014, that is already 4 years ago. Plus how crazy it may sound to some people, in game development you don't make an unique engine per game. If this Smash Bros uses the same engine (which it most problaby will), it speeds up the development. However, it doesn't make it automatically a port. They could tweak the gameplay, make new stages, new fighters, new items etc.
