Re: Talking Point: Do You Miss Instruction Manuals?

gamekill

What I miss are games that do not force you to go through a ton of tutorials about every single detail in them (even the secondary or easy to figure out parts). This became a trend in part because manuals stopped being a thing.

Props for stuff like the hanging picture on the wall or the bones on the table being actually drawn, and not lazily rotated sprites like some "nes style" games do.
(last two screenshots)

PS - I saw from the trailer that there are still rotated sprites on certain elements of gameplay, but at least this seems to be minimal, comparing to the rest. Character animations for example still seem to be frame by frame pixel animation.

Re: Spiritual Successor To "Underrated And Misunderstood" Zelda II Could Be Switch-Bound

..now watch the video again, but this time turn off the audio and forget about the shameless attempt at hijacking of the excellent Zelda games name. The effortless riding on one of the best franchise names in gaming history. What is left is just some generic-looking bland mess.

Why is it not even being sued by the aggressive Nintendo company? Because it is not even close to a Zelda game.. So why treat it as if it was..?

@misterflipnote

Thanks for mentioning that; I looked it up and learned something new.

That said, the wikipedia article itself funnily enough says:

""Poe's Law applies to more and more internet interactions." The article gave examples of cases involving 4chan and the Trump administration where there were deliberate ambiguities over whether something was serious or intended as a parody, where people were using Poe's Law as "a refuge" to camouflage beliefs that would otherwise be considered unacceptable."

So yeah we will never know if this whining about pokemon is serious.

The game itself is good. But, in portable mode at least, there are slowdowns all the time. People who say they do not notice it are being too generous. BUT, the slowdowns are not erratic, it is like a constant mild sluggishness for a few seconds mostly whenever you transition from an indoor area to the outdoors. Not game-breaking and not really unnerving stuff, but definitely pretty much noticeable, and happens all the time.

They probably took care of that part and made it comfortable; I believe the main problem is going to be it quickly wearing down around the edges, losing whatever coating is over the base plastic probably, leaving it exposed. Similar to what happens on eBook/Kindle covers for example, that are always worn out at the edges and stop looking good pretty soon.

@Matroska
Yes of course I am aware of all that. I think I did not get my point across. What I meant was more like.. at that whole offline starting era in game's history, games were much more of a closed thing (no Unity/Unreal, no data mining, no widespread and social internet). So it was almost as if the cartridges had definite, unchangeable, tangible content. In the player's imaginations. Kind of a difficult idea to explain really..

Re: Microsoft Has "No Plans" To Bring More First-Party Exclusives To Other Consoles

@Kriven
But would you be ok playing the same 16-bit games and miss out on anything that came after that? PS1-2-3-4, N64-Gamecube-Wii-WiiU-DS-3DS, VR headsets, etc etc? Hardware makers are huge companies wanting to make a profit. They keep pushing forward because they want people to buy the next hardware, but they need to put that hardware to use hence the new games..
It is a pretty difficult situation to define as "good" or "bad "all in all.

Re: Microsoft Has "No Plans" To Bring More First-Party Exclusives To Other Consoles

@Kriven
I get what you are saying and I honestly think those are all valid points from a consumer's perspective in the immediate and short terms. But also there is the matter that competition drives technology/improvements forward.
Imagine all we had was a single platform, say the gaming PCs in the 90s that did not even have a 3D-graphics card, and still used CDs (600mb size)... we would be stuck with that until now.
Competition from various different angles is what keeps content evolving.

Then you may reply "competing PC makers would make better PCs where the games run better". Well the truth is if the consumers could enjoy the exact same games, and have all the same experiences, on their existing PCs the majority would not bother getting a new PC.

That is why ultra-resolution TVs are taking decades to break into the market. That is also why PS4 Pro is a tiny fraction of the market. Or super top of the line graphics cards take years to be put to use. People just won't spend hard-earned money on new hardware unless they feel they NEED to.

If someone NEEDS the Switch for playing Smash Bros, he/she WILL skip expensive lunch meals, or drinking at bars, or buying new clothes, to make money for the Switch.

So as I said, as a consumer I agree with you; right now I have sold my Switch because I needed the money for real life stuff, and I have a pile of games stored back home that I CANNOT play, even though I do have a PC and a 3DS. Does it feel bad? Yes it does. I wanna go on playing my Zelda and my Closed Nightmare cards.

Re: DC Universe Online Blasts Onto Switch Today For Free

@Viision11
I played for a bit on PC some years ago, and I really enjoyed how you don't (didn't?) need to form a group before going to do the missions, it was all very fluid. Like say you are a villain, and you get a mission to go blow up 20 police cars in a certain area. You could just head there and start blowing the cars and the counter would start 01/20, 02/20 and so on.. but if another villain player joined the action the kills would stack up for both, and so on.

This makes it ideal for quick sessions without compromise, no need to make a lot of preparations and matching free time with your fixed group of friends etc. I might pick this up on Switch because of that.

"new standard Switch is believed to increase the current Switch's 2.5 - 6.5 hour battery life to 4.5 - 9 hours. It's also running an updated 'Mariko' version of the Tegra X1 chip"

Why mislead people and make it sound like Nintendo did something separate specifically to increase battery life? It is increased BECAUSE of the new chip as a bonus.

Telling the truth plain and simple is always better:

"new standard Switch is running an updated 'Mariko' version of the Tegra X1 chip. One of the side benefits of that is, this will increase the current Switch's 2.5 - 6.5 hour battery life to 4.5 - 9 hours. "

As others already pointed out here and in other communities, the change to the updated chip is due to it being the new in-production model, that's it. AND, the old one has a hardware flaw that made it hackable and Nintendo is of course happy to get rid of that problem.

Re: New And Improved Nintendo Switch Model Reportedly On Sale In Australia And Hong Kong

gamekill

I agree and am glad it ended up as a good thing to end users (expanded battery life).
But is Nintendo doing this for that purpose, or because the previous first gen chip is hackable? I mean they could continue using the old one for cheaper because it is last gen for nVidia and up their profits, couldn't they?
I'm glad this time a Company's interests met 100% with the consumer's. That's rare.
