The Pokémon Company has shared a brand new cartoon to its Pokémon Kids TV channel, all in a very different style to the famous Pokémon anime.
Seemingly under a new 'PokéToon' brand, the animation is reminiscent of cartoons from America's Golden Age, where series such as Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes rose to fame. The episode, called 'Chase The Beans', stars Scraggy as its protagonist, who finds itself going on the hunt for food, as well as Mimikyu who's seemingly up to no good.
Pokémon Kids TV regularly produces animated videos for younger viewers, but this is the first we've seen in this style. Hopefully, more short adventures like this one will be shared in the future.

I always imagined the Pokemon universe would have media with anthropomorphised Pokemon.
That was actually very entertaining and aesthetically spot on.
This is amazing!!!
Why are the watch later buttons disabled on this site despite being a YouTube player?
That was surprisingly wholesome.
And they successfully pulled off a whole bunch of classic animation gags!
Oh, gosh...
That slapstick humour... 🤣
So Looney Tunes.
This is so un pokemon like. Yet it’s the greatest pokemon content I’ve ever seen. Hope they’ll produce more of it.
Talk about a header image you can hear.
EDIT: aaaaaand that sound YOU guys may have just heard was mu nostalgic brain. I hereby proclaim it best Pokemon animation ever. Don't change my mind.
poor Scraggy
That was suprisung good and the best thing about it is it required no words at all to be entertaining very much like Tom and Jerry in that regard.
The artwork on this is amazing and I love the old school Looney Toons / Disney vibes with this ☺️
Also, who doesn't love scraggy!?
Weird but i love it!!
This is awesome!

Boner Growth Gif material at 2:52!
That was... out of left field. Might just be capitalizing on the Cuphead craze. It was an entertaining 4 mins. though.
I see this cartoon emulating the aesthetic of old cartoons well, but has none of the witty writing that old looney tunes and Tom and Jerry did that made it massively popular among both children and grown ups.
@RupeeClock wow I didn't know that. I used to do it all the time. Strange but understandable I guess..?
@Abeedo 100% agree with you.
Very well made, but in my opinion it’s just ... not funny at all?
This just made my day. I'm a total sucker for classic cartoons, and I was glad to see Pokémon of all franchises capturing that exact feel so perfectly.
Only gripe I have with it is that, unless you're familiar with what Mimikyu is all about, the joke falls flat on its face. Otherwise, I'm all for it. If Pokémon wants to integrate slapstick humor, then by all means, it should be free to do so. However there are too many anime-inspired things in the Pokémon lore for its foray into zany western humor to actually hit.
Very good!!!! Nicely done.
I'm just confused... what's falling out of Mimikyu?
Anyway classic old school cartoons of this style are quite popular in Japan. In particular, Tom and Jerry and Snoopy from the Peanuts are really popular.
Give me a sec here, this hit me hard in my nostalgia
Wow, that was so good I would watch more of that. They did an excellent job!
The Cuphead and Pokemon crossover looks nice but seriously this was really great.
Captured the feel of those older shows perfectly, hope we get more of this!
That was so great and unexpected! I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed some...rather interesting adult references throughout.
Pokemon officially done in a western style. They've done a really good job at it, espeicailly with the use of using musical instriments for sound effects. I wouldn't mind seeing more of these!
I am a sucker for most forms of animation, and that extends to the classics! This was very well done IMO and captures the spirit of its source material.
@Heavyarms55 Took me a moment to figure it out, but I think those are Pokébeans.
Weird choice of Pokémon to use. Also I expected to at least smile a bit, but nope. It looks good but it's far from being funny.
Having watched the cartoon now, I'm not sure about it.
I think it was lacking strong impactful sound design and proper timing, like it didn't know when it hold back to let you absorb things or really enjoy the moment.
What made Tom and Jerry so successful was its masterful use of responsive music and instrumentation.
Great work. Would love to see more but for a first try it's really good!
This was beautiful and hilarious. Great homage to early WB, Disney, etc. Perfect choice of 'mons too - both are hilariously funny Pokémon to begin with.
@Heavyarms55 Tom & Jerry was pretty easy to dub as a lot of episodes didn't have dialogue.
I was unaware that Peanuts was popular in Japan. Is it just the segments that focus on Snoopy?
Things start getting really weird at the 2:50 mark yikes
@Tyranexx @Heavyarms55 yes, based on the name of the episode, and the shape of the object, these are poke beans, from Alola. Which makes way too much sense as stuffing for Mimikyu’s fake head, I guess.
It lacked a lot of the humor and tongue and cheek adult humor that the old cartoons they are emulating had... And like was mentioned before, the sound wasn't all there...
All that said, that was still pretty enjoyable to watch them mimic a completely different style of artwork and make it look good. The show LOOKS good, just needs a little improvement. I think they should make more.
@Eel I forgot Mimikyu was Gen 7/Alolan (Too many generations at this point, newer ones run together in my head lol), so the Pokébeans make even more sense now. I'd always pictured Mimikyu's stuffing more like the traditional stuff (wool or other fluffy material), not like a bean bag.
I'm glad some people liked it but I thought the script even for a Tom & Jerry / Looney Toon like cartoon was really lacking. It was something more like a undergrad student project than something from a professional company
That's incredible in terms of animation....the look was pretty spot on for WB animation which is quite impressive. I always preferred WB's animation style to Disneys from the classic era.
I do agree with @Kalmaro though. The defining aspect of Looney Tunes was the sound design which isn't there, and really might not be possible to replicate today. So much of it was the result of the methods and equipment of the era. And I don't know that you can get away with some of the adult humor they got away with back then....everything is rigidly vetted for kids today, so that they only see a sanitized world. Then they log onto Facebook and know more illicit references than I do.
Though, to me, Loony Tunes just isn't Loony Tunes without Mel Blanc. Can't happen. He was the show.
@Heavyarms55 I suppose based on evidence from Pokemon Sun & Moon, those would be those heart-shaped Pokebeans. Pokemon really like them and you used them to grow affection with them. That helped tremendously in the game. Pokemon would avoid attacks more often, land more critical hits, even cure their own status ailments! Now, why does Mimikyu have so many? THAT is a great question. It's almost like the Mimikyu is purposely trying to lure in Scraggy... maybe for a fight or something?
@Tyranexx @Reigestugatensho well why fill your fake head with soft stuffing, when you can use the beans to lure victims AND make a blunt weapon out of it! 😀
@Noid - Like Rickey Rattata and Bugs Buneary?
Well this was unexpected. This sort of animation is a lost art form. It looks fantastic. They have talented animators. I hope there's more to come.
Very charming! At 4 minutes long it did not overstay its welcome. I would like follow-ups to feature different Pokemon each time, and also perhaps to feature more side characters (Pokemon) in a single episode. This one was a great first step, but felt just a bit isolated.
Bit of a stale imitation. Not sure how kids today would view it
@Tyranexx @Reigestugatensho @Eel Ohhh I forgot about those. That makes sense.
@Elvie Snoopy is totally the most popular character but the others do pop up alongside him. I don't actually know where people watch it, because I don't have cable. But many of my students and even coworkers have bags, shirts, pencil cases, etc etc with Snoopy and Peanuts characters on them. It's so common that people must really enjoy it.
@GamerFromJump Don't forget Daffy Ducklett and Porky Pignite!
@Eel LOL, fair point!
It was entertaining, but if I was to have one critique it’s actually the very smooth animation of the movement. In slapstick, the sudden, almost jarring movements add to the impact of the comedy. Here it’s kinda lost.
Not going to debate whether or not the result was well executed or not but..
Funny how Pokemon Company hates being copied, yet copying other's creative style is totally ok.
Thoroughly enjoyed that, primarily because of the nostalgia, but also because it was executed really well. If cartoons were still normally like this today, I'd probably watch more of them!
@FX102A Seems they may have been going for more of a Fleischer Studios inspired aesthetic with this cartoon, as the noodly arms and squash-and-stretch animation suggest something closer to Koko the Clown or Merrie Melodies than the Looney Tunes comparison offered in the article. I think it's very well done and captures the look and feel of the period rather successfully
Well, this was pretty stupid. Sure, it's a good imitation of early cartoons from the '30's, but there are good reasons why most people prefer the cartoons that came even a decade or two afterwards.
Haha this is great! Love Looney Tunes and other cartoons of that era
That was pretty cool.
