The Switch is being treated to another dose of superhero action today in the form of DC Universe Online.
The game is a free-to-play, massively multiplayer online game unsurprisingly set in the DC universe which has players creating their own unique character. From there, you can who buddy up with and fight against DC stars like Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and The Joker in an ever-expanding world which has been growing thanks to new content updates and quality-of-life improvements.
The development team has been working hard to ensure Switch players have "the best MMO experience", with a revamped tutorial, access to the latest event content within a few hours of starting the game, new augment and artifact systems, and updated character models all being present. The Switch version of the game will come with a brand new server, meaning you won't be able to connect with players from other platforms (at launch, at least), but a Nintendo Switch Online subscription isn't required to get stuck in.
There's more to come, too, as DCUO will receive two new episodes based on DC’s Dark Nights: Metal comic book series later this year. Episode 35: Metal - Part I will release in September 2019, with the finale, Episode 36: Metal - Part II releasing in December.
Will you be giving this a try today? It's hard to say no when you can grab it for free!

I'm curious to if this links your Nintendo account with your Daybreak Games account, or if you just get a login screen for Daybreak Games' DC Universe Online in the game after opening it. I'd personally rather Daybreak Games not have any connection to my Nintendo account because they are a very shady company.
Downloading it now. I'll be sure to give it a good go when its finished.
Well that's... Interesting. Not pulling me from FF14 though.
Dark knights metal event sounds interesting
@PharoneTheGnome is day break the dev or the publisher? What's shady about them?
Has anyone played this game outside of the switch version? Curious, but also not sure if I wanna try it out...
Do you recommend it?
Why you would create a character who can't fly is beyond me, but this game is not for me
@Viision11 I played it a bit when it first came out years ago and it was decently fun. I don't play MMOs for long though, so no idea how it's changed since then.
@Viision11 I thought it sucked on PS4,but I’m not really an MMO guy anyway
Is the free version of Switch as limited as the PS4 version?
If they improved the free version, I might start playing again.
Sorry if it seems i'm singling you out @ryancraddock but all previews IMO by all Nintendo Lifers should mention if know, how the game makes money. Aka is it by paying for cosmetics, to win, extra missions/ characters ect.ect.
I make attempts at playing this game every so often.
Maybe on the switch with handheld mode it'll be easier to play for long periods of time. It gets boring pretty quick with fetch quests.
You've played this game so can you tell me how this game makes money @w00dm4n? Aka is it by paying for cosmetics, to win, extra missions/ characters ect.ect.
@ralphdibny nothing financially shady about the company, so don't worry about them stealing your money or anything. It's just that DBG is Sony Online Entertainment which has done really stupid crap in the past with their games. Sony sold the company off, and it was renamed Daybreak Games, but it is essentially the same company with just fewer employees.
Anybody that knows who Sony Online Entertainment is can tell you that they are a company that has generated a ton of angst and outrage in their customers over the past couple decades.
One of their most infamous screw jobs was when they were running Starwars Galaxies. They pre-sold copies to their newest expansion to the game which advertised new stuff for all the classes including their Beastmaster class (I think that was the name of the class). What they didn't tell their customers was that while that expansion was being made, another development team at SoE was creating a major patch to the game called the New Game Engine (NGE) for which removed the beastmaster class from the game completely. The NGE patch was released a week after the expansion went live. All those people that pre-ordered the expansion got screwed, and if you had been playing a beastmaster, well choose a new class to play because it's gone.
SoE/DBG does seems to do really stupid crap like this from time to time. They don't listen to their customers, and they put out very lackluster expansions and charge top dollar for it.
That being said.... DC Universe Online is a really good game. Just sucks that DBG owns it.
What's the catch? A previously subscription-based MMO now on Switch and for free? Something doesn't add up.
@BacklogBlues Absolutely, if we were to review the game we'd always include such info, and in previews if we knew at the time.
With this example, we haven't played the game ourselves (this is just a simple news piece) so we can't answer that question with guaranteed accuracy, but other versions have optional payments for things like new maps, episodes, visuals etc 🙂
I understand thanks @ryancraddock can't report on what you don't know. And thanks on the info of other systems. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
@BacklogBlues all of that
you can get a subscription plan to get everything for "free"
You can buy episodes which will give you new powers, costumes, and missions.
If you want to be a Green Lantern you have to buy the episode or get the subscription.
It's been a few years since i played on Xbox One or PS4.
24GB is a lot to download if you're not sure.
I'd say it has the same business model as Elder Scrolls Online.
I never understood why you'd buy a subscription since you lose it all when you stop it.The game is pretty old too so this might be the last gasp to make some money.
Watch some Youtube videos and see if it's worth your time.
It is fun to run around with super speed. It's like a Superman version of the first Crackdown game on Xbox 360.
@Moroboshi876 Works on a sub basis - £12.50 A MONTH!!! as a starter package.... £99 for the year.
Played this a long time ago and it was okay. It is a big download, not sure I want to give up that space to play it on Switch.
@PharoneTheGnome thanks for the explanation, i didn't know anything about that particular situation. It sucks when devs/publishers do stuff like that!
I might try it, but I really didn't like the combat. So I doubt it would change enough to hook me.
Been eagerly awaiting this to come out since it was announced. I've played on the PS3 and PS4 (and even some on the PC, but I absolutely hate the mouse/keyboard combo controls for this game...controller all the way!). My daughters and I are all waiting for it to actually hit the eShop in a couple of hours so we can start downloading it. I know people like to complain about the f2p model that this uses (either a sub to get all content right away...or pay for different packs/episodes/powers), but I haven't minded it since several major MMO's went f2p with similar type models. You still get access to a ton of content for free, and if I want to go further, I can purchase the individual episodes that at the time tickle my fancy to do more story content...and then own it forever without having to worry about my sub lapsing and losing it all until I pay again. There are 6 powers upfront for free (2 of each "role"/class type), and you can purchase access to individual powers types after that if you want. I hope we aren't limited to just 2 characters, but I fear that will be the case and that's the only thing I don't like (though you can buy more character slots, which I'll probably be doing). We are all very much looking forward to hunting and exploring the DC universe together here (3 Switches in the house, and their friend picking it up too, gives us a full party to swarm around in...lol). Come on, noon (EST)...!!
How many gb's is this then? I think a new Micro SD might need to be ordered.....
@BANJO
On the eShop it shows 24GB download for this one...and like Warframe it will just get bigger as more content is added. Already reserved the space on my SD card!
@SwitchedOn_Games Of course. They didn't even mention any kind of payment in the article. It was completely misleading, am I right?
Thanks
@Highlar thanks for that. Only 19gb left on my Micro SD. I will leave this for now I think, but will have to get another card soon....
@Viision11 I've been told it's a lot of fun. It's free anyway, so I would try it. It's 24gb though so it will take some time 😅
I’ve never played this game before. Does anyone recommended it? I would download this, but the only problem is that the download is pretty big. And I have little space on my Micro SD card.
I may try this out. I’d be more interested in Star Trek Online, though.
@Moroboshi876 Yea sounded like it was totally F2P.
Is it good or naw??
Thanks for the info @w00dm4n just kinda info i was looking for. But if the file size ends up being that big i might just pass as it would take up a lot space on my Microsd and take about 24 hours to download. But then again i do like Superman & Crackdown. Thanks again.
@SwitchedOn_Games I was going to try it out and maybe sub if I liked it. But for £12.50 a month I don't even think I'll waste the SD card space and bandwidth downloading the thing.
Shame really, but I'll have the newly announced Marvel Champions LCG to sink my money into so my superhero cravings will be fulfilled. Hopefully.
hmm idk looks sorta fun but idk know yet because when nintendo say "free game" that means its actually not free in game.
@Moroboshi876 intrusive microtransactions likely
@nkarafo I highly recommend it and I myself will be starting over on the Switch today. I am looking forward to start on a new fresh server with a new character!
I played it for years on PS4 and PC and enjoyed it a lot.
It really is the only active Super Hero MMO left today, after City of Heroes closed down years ago.
You also have Champions Online on PC still, but that game is just dead with hardly any players left and Cryptic is one of the worst companies. Especially since its now owned by PWE.
DCUO really is a fun game, with good story missions and excellent Voice acting! The Joker is voiced by none other than Mark Hamill and he has been praised time and time again for his voice over work in this game!
PS. The game is Free 2 Play, in that you have access to a select powers and weapons to start with and then the ability to experience the game and level up all the way to max level 30 for free.
You can then decide if you just want to subscribe to the game and unlock everything at once while subscribed or buy issues and powers on itself without subscribing.
They often have deals on Power bundles and Issue bundles (basically DLC packs), that unlock specific content and powers without having to subscribe.
It's not showing up on the eShop for me... :/
@EmmatheBest Try search for it. Should be available in both US and EU now.
@Jeronan Yep, showing up now. Thanks!
This was my first console mmorpg back when it launched on the PlayStation 3. Was pretty fun! A bluetooth keyboard was very handy to comunicate, though now u guess its pretty easy to set uo a discord server and do it that way. I will check it out on my switch.
Downloading it as I type already got 90 day subscription I use to play this game on PS4 but never gave it the time it needed.
Cant wait get on it.
@Viision11 I have had long stints on both PC and ps4 playing this game. It's no Wow or FF but if you like superpowers and a tab target system with a beat'em ups kinda flare it's worth checking out.
The best way I can think to describe it is it's like that one girl you dated but don't want anyone to know about but every once in awhile it's fun to go back and see what she's been up too.
@Moroboshi876 It’s actually been free to play for quiet some time.
I played it briefly and liked the variety of powers available. Flying is an easy go-to and being able to do it from the very beginning was neat (the only other super hero MMO I ever played was City of Heroes and you had to level up quite a bit before you could fly in that game) but I actually liked getting around with acrobatics too. But I didn't really like the visuals or the effects. In many ways the game looked sloppy. It's been years since I've touched it though so I don't know if that's been improved since then.
Never spent a dime on it, I think I built a character to level 10 or so before I left it behind.
I can only imagine how long this will take on wifi.
@WarlockNem So what about @SwitchedOn_Games said?
@Moroboshi876 Its been free to play on PS4 for quite a number of years. So I'm not sure what you're referring to
@Mando44646 The mentioned user talked about subscription fees.
I've been curious about this genre for a long time, but very few have been released on Nintendo platforms in my region. I'm excited to try this out tonight. Hopefully if it does well, Nintendo and/or Square Enix will localize Dragon Quest X
I played this game on PC alot when it first came out, you dont need to buy the dlc to grow or get far. Just ask strong players to help you lvl up.
I did and lots of players helped out.
I hope i can Still use my original account from pc as its cross play.
I'll probably grab a few friends and try it out. I'm not a /huge/ DC fan, but who knows maybe it'll be fun!
@Viision11
I played for a bit on PC some years ago, and I really enjoyed how you don't (didn't?) need to form a group before going to do the missions, it was all very fluid. Like say you are a villain, and you get a mission to go blow up 20 police cars in a certain area. You could just head there and start blowing the cars and the counter would start 01/20, 02/20 and so on.. but if another villain player joined the action the kills would stack up for both, and so on.
This makes it ideal for quick sessions without compromise, no need to make a lot of preparations and matching free time with your fixed group of friends etc. I might pick this up on Switch because of that.
I hope it is good! The PS4 version has a 75 and the PC version has a 72 on Metacritic!
Okay...after trying the game on Switch...it runs GREAT. Looks good...runs smooth and fast... But there's one thing I've found so far that I DON'T like: chat is SEVERELY limited on a f2p account. You can send about 6 messages...then get slammed with a massive lockout from all chat after that. Also, voice chat is locked behind subs (although I guess that isn't as bad as the chat lock). This is just BAD design in an MMO, f2p or otherwise. Locking people out from communicating is just bad...period. I guess discord is where its at...AGAIN...since you can't just talk to everyone around you in the game (although the chat box works VERY well, when you can use it).
