Earning Bells is the name of the game for some Animal Crossing: New Horizons players, but this entrepreneurial genius has really taken things up a notch.
According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, a Chinese player has designed and set up their very own in-game store that accepts real money from others who visit their island. As you can see in the image below, the player has added their WeChat Pay and AliPay QR codes (which can be used by other people to quickly transfer money just like Apple Pay) so that they can accept actual, real-world cash.
Ahmad says that the setup is being used to flog custom-designed items in-game (presumably fancy pieces of clothing or nicely designed artwork). We're not sure just how successful this new business venture has been for the player, but it's quite the idea. Somehow, it feels both incredibly clever and awfully wrong at the same time.
Of course, you can always simply recreate any design you see online by drawing it up yourself, so we're not sure why anyone would want to pay for such a thing with real money. Still, if the demand's there...

Looks like the prime cadidiate for Tom Nook's successor.
This is not in the spirit of the game, no issues with people gifting money, or exchanging items, but this imho is a step too far.
Oh my god, Nintendo needs to ban this player ASAP. Don't need this in our game. I love AC but Nintendo need to monitor this type of behaviour.
Isn't there some kind of law or anything that forbids of using the game for commercial use?
If people wants to commission other people for a cool clothing, why blame them? There's a lot of SUPER nice outfit people have made and it's not easy, considering the limited palette and the whole shebang of the thing is in pixelart...
What's the current exchange rate from Bells to GBP?
I'm not even mad 😂 This person is a Nook in the making, and an entrepreneurial genius!
I get the icky feeling some of you guys might have towards this, BUT, imagine a world in which charities had their own Islands and you could donate to them. Imagine a Cancer Research UK island, or an RSPB island that only had bird villagers 😂
WAIT, EVEN BETTER, imagine a takeaway Island, where you could place a Dominoes order, pay for it via QR code and it comes to your actual house.
This has so much potential 😂
I'm all for this. I don't like taking the time to make designs. I don't enjoy it. That's due to the fact I'm not good at it. If someone wants to make a Thom Browne fur coat for my character, I'd pay $5 for it.
I'm a little envious I didn't think of this. Haha
Qrcode to youporn in 3 2 1 ...
I had this idea too. Hahahaah
I don't agree with this but i can't help but smile at the cheek and idea of it, this guy will go far in life.
b r u h i n t e n s i f i e s .
@Rafke Profile GIF says all.
And I can see the ban hammer coming in 3..2...1.
I wonder who originally had the designs stolen from them?
I see a cease and desist letter coming in really soon (or just an outright perma ban), since I am pretty sure it goes against the rules of Nintendo.
Ban this scum, trying to make money off Nintendos engine. I pity this fool.
RMT is (rightfully) forbidden in pretty much every game, I'd not be surprised if Nintendo bans him.
@Rpg-lover Not make money. Everyone buys from China. China make the world go world.
I think this might fall under the vague terms and conditions that result in your online connectivity being blocked in animal crossing by Nintendo.
It's fair dos if you ask me. Absolutely nobody has to pay if they don't want to. Good work I say. Bound to get stamped on, but nice try Lao Ché.
If it's his own art fair enough, probably should be doing it on social media rather than in game though.
@mesome713 That literally makes no sense. The people who play Animal Crossing: New Horizons already bought the game. This isn't going to hurt Nintendo in the slightest, since Nintendo already has the money gained from the game itself.
I think this is hilarious and the guy is a genius to be honest.
People should make money for doing what they love especially if it benefits other people.
I was starting to wonder if Crazy Redd was in this game.
Clever and wrong, I agree. Such a mixed feeling, lol. So Clong, much Wrever.
I suspect Nintendo will try to block this sort of thing, probably by banning the player from online play (not just in Animal Crossing but in every game) as it no doubts violates Nintendo's terms of service.
Anyone who buys from this scammer deserves what they get
@deafswin37
Anyone who buys from this person is presumably getting exactly what they paid for. That is not a scam.
Don't buy from China. It'll probably get your vllagers sick.
This is all getting a bit too Mr. Robot for my liking.
i rather not add stuff to the game to accept real money. for now i will be sticking with money trees.
Yeah, this is big brain time
Doesn't this violate the terms of use?
April Fools!
Or is it?
@Zippers
Exactly. It is not like the stuff being sold alters gameplay or gives unfair advantages to whoever pays for it. It is just optional aesthetic stuff and on top of that, made by the person selling them.
@MegaKBang Yeah, section 204.21a of the don't be a penis code.
@Zippers Wrong it's a scam thanks..research next time buttercup lol
Isn't it easier just spelling out your Paypal account for people to pay you?
This is evil. I hope they stop it soon.
