In case there was still any doubt over Pokémon GO's tremendous popularity, it has been confirmed today that the app has been downloaded more than one billion times.

The news comes from a new trailer released for the game today in Japan, which included the staggering statistic as a side-note (thanks, Serebii). Of course, the number of downloads an app receives does not necessarily equate to the number of active players it has - of which there will be far fewer - but it's still an incredibly impressive milestone.

To put that number into perspective, if all of the people who have downloaded the game were to form their own pocket monster-loving country, it would be the third most populated in the world behind India and China - a country, incidentally, where the app isn't even available.

Pokémon GO recently celebrated its third anniversary. We still remember the chaos when the game launched to this day.

Are you one of those billion? Do you still play the game today? Let us know in the usual place.
