In case there was still any doubt over Pokémon GO's tremendous popularity, it has been confirmed today that the app has been downloaded more than one billion times.
The news comes from a new trailer released for the game today in Japan, which included the staggering statistic as a side-note (thanks, Serebii). Of course, the number of downloads an app receives does not necessarily equate to the number of active players it has - of which there will be far fewer - but it's still an incredibly impressive milestone.
To put that number into perspective, if all of the people who have downloaded the game were to form their own pocket monster-loving country, it would be the third most populated in the world behind India and China - a country, incidentally, where the app isn't even available.
Pokémon GO recently celebrated its third anniversary. We still remember the chaos when the game launched to this day.
Are you one of those billion? Do you still play the game today? Let us know in the usual place.

There aren't even a billion people on the planet.
That's kind of crazy since there's only 7 million people on this planet
@Aaronnnnn @Obito_Sigma Are you two serious? There's over 7 and a half billion people on earth right now. Even the article mentions that China and India alone both have more than a billion people.
this is great considering there are only 17 people on the planet
I never got into the game. Has Arceus appeared in the game?
Its power level is off the charts!
One BILLION downloads~
(Raises one eyebrow and puts pinky finger in the corner of his mouth)
Sure there’s only half a billion people on the Planet?! Did we all download it twice?!?!
But there are only 3 million people in America... 🤔 I don't know where the other half billion could be coming from.
@MartyFlan There’s way more people than that on earth
@Morpheel 😉 I’m kidding, I’m amused at the posts above me, not sure if I’m missing something but I THINK they’re kidding too 😂
@MartyFlan oh I totally skipped the first few comments. I wouldn’t be surprised of some people actually thought there’s only a few million people on earth. It would be easy to misremember the actual number, I guess.
How is this even prossible?!
1- There's not even that many people in da worlt.
B- There haven't been that many Switchez solt.
3- Can I has cheezeburger?
As of 2017, there are 7.53 billion people on the earth. Google it.
Billion is a fake number. More proof the Earth is flat if these mother breathers have to make up large numbers to scare us.

@WoolooSweater I don’t know about the rest but I was kidding. I’m sure they were kidding... pretty sure
Never even heard of this game.
@w00dm4n I'm more scared that they might require mothers for respiration.
@NoxAeturnus this is why i can't get a Shadow Charmander.
Two Ratatatatatas , 2 Zubats and one liekable midkip
@Aaronnnnn Okay good, I can never tell anymore.
when i delete and re-downloading it, does it count?
and they didn't even need to log into one billion bethesda accounts
(this number is hugely inflated and highly suspect)
The only thing better then the joke comments here are the serious responses. Get woke round earthers
There are actually 9 billion people inhabiting Earth right now. Everyone always forgets to add the mole people. Sheesh.
Wait, this contradicts my theory that there is only 1 person on the planet.
@WoolooSweater A scary number eh. What's more terrifying is that at this moment there are more people alive on earth than have ever died. So that means every human that has ever lived and died on this planet doesn't match up to how many people are alive today. Mind-blowing
I still play the game. It’s gotten much better but there are still too many damn common types, and multiplayer battles still don’t require much strategy (especially since you have shields).
I walk a lot, to work, the train station, store, pretty much everywhere. So this game is perfect for that. If you only played it in the first few months and thought it was boring, I don't blame you. It's been heavily fleshed out sense.
Had the game released the way it is now, the madness we had in the beginning would have been even more crazy.
@dimi
I would say yes. That is a way of increasing numbers "without lying".
@Kwehst
Yeah also nobody is counting the double personality types. And the ones who lead double lives. Oh the madness.
To be fair, I've probably uninstalled then immediately re-install do it several times due to Google's stupid way of 'optimizing' storage, where it would say I didn't have enough space on my phone for the update, yet when I uninstalled then reinstalled it, I 'magically' had enough room for it... :/
As a huge Pokemon fan, I'm surprised I'm not really into GO. Maybe I should try it again...
I still play. Hit level 40 the other day.
