Another week is underway and we have the Nintendo Download Update for Europe. This week the star attraction is undoubtedly Minecraft on Wii U, but there are also quite a few retro offerings and some intriguing download options, in addition to a huge number of 3DS HOME Themes and discounts. Let's get to it.
Wii U eShop
Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Studios, €29.99 / £19.99) - It's the pop culture phenomenon that's been a long time coming, making its Wii U début via the eShop. This blocky world-building sandbox has inspired some efforts from smaller publishers, yet arrives with a whole lot of features, six bundled DLC packs and more available to buy separately. Despite the lack of inventory management on the GamePad it will include USB keyboard and voice chat support, and we'll see how it all stacks up in our review.
Ascent of Kings (Nostatic Software, €1.99 / £1.49) - This one is a platforming adventure in which a young brother sets off on an adventure to become a King; with exploration and discovery there are ability boosts to be found, too. Despite its charms we nevertheless had to consider its brevity in our Ascent of Kings review.
Island Flight Simulator (Joindots, €7.99 / £5.99) - A genre not exactly blessed with options on the Wii U, this apparent flight-sim gives you 12 islands to travel between and a range of missions that include 'illegal' deliveries for 'shifty clients'. Crikey. We'll take off and bring you a review soon.
Job the Leprechaun (Herrero Games, €2.99 / £2.69) - This peculiarly-named game is a retro platformer with single-screen stages in which you collect clovers, find the door and dodge enemies. It's very basic and rather average, in our view.
Wii U Virtual Console
Mario Tennis (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99) - Just like Nintendo's other spin-off sports or racing titles of the N64 era this took a fun and slightly wacky approach, with local multiplayer at its heart. Considered widely as the 'first' Mario Tennis game (despite a couple of debatable predecessors) this is also loved by many for its simple charm; that's certainly the case in our Mario Tennis review.
New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99) - It's easy to forget in this era of plentiful 2D Mario experiences, but this was the first 'new' 2D Mario game since the Super NES era when it arrived on the DS; that explains the 'New' branding. Its visual style and mini-games were eye-catching upon release, and this spawned a fresh wave of 2D Mario platformers. We were full of praise for this in our New Super Mario Bros. review.
Onimusha Tactics (Capcom, €6.99 / £6.29) - Based on the popular Onimusha series of action titles, this Game Boy Advance release takes place on a grid-based battlefield where the player has to defeat opposing forces in a turn-based conflict. It's a lot like Final Fantasy Tactics, as the name suggests. Although it doesn't follow the plot of its home console predecessors, several familiar faces make an appearance during the adventure. We gave this a recommendation in our Onimusha Tactics review.

Steel Empire (Teyon, €15.99 / £14.39) — Long awaited in Nintendo Life's UK office, this remaster of the Sega Genesis shooter has plenty of improvements on what some consider to be a cult classic. You can learn about those enhancements and why we love this release so much in our Steel Empire review.
Chronus Arc (Kemco, €9.99 / £8.99) - A retro-styled RPG developed by Hit-Point Co., your team need to find mythical fragments for a once-a-decade event, which sounds like a pretty normal weekend. This looks promising in terms of its pixel-based visuals and a handy map on the touchscreen, and with class changes being joined by dungeon areas it is, on paper, a welcome dose of RPG gaming on the eShop. Unfortunately we think it falls short of its potential, as suggested in our Chronus Arc review.
The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind (Delirium Studios, €12.99 / £11.69) - Trapped within a mental prison of his own making, the titular Baron Von Sottendorff must negotiate 8 different worlds, 40 challenging levels and avoid 18 different types of enemies to regain his sanity. This is a puzzle game in which you manipulate rooms using the touch screen, and we'll put our sanity to the test to bring you a review.

New super Mario bros, so new it's now on VC!
you know MS have been supporting Minecraft on other systems and even announced a Wii U version
the XB1 hasn't been as great a seller as MS hoped it would (although as far as i'm aware it's still making money)
could MS be testing the waters of being a third party publisher
Wow, those are some great sales prices! I'll definitely have to grab a few games.
Some quite good discounts here, its a pity I have most of the decent ones... Still with quite a few priced between £1 and £2 pounds I may take a chance on a couple I had no interest in.
Still waiting for the first one to say:
"Disappointing week. Nothing for me AGAIN!"
Needs more discounts
No, it really doesn't. I heartily recommend many of those discounts, the Curve Digital prices in particular caught my eye.
I voted for Mario Tennis but the true first thing I'll be buying is Smash DLC tomorrow.
I expected Minecraft to cost more in the UK,so that's a surprise. It's £24.99 on the Playstation store and £23.99 on Xbox.So after all the complaining about the price the Wii U has the cheapest version.

Those Curve Digital discounts are crazy! Time to give The Swapper and Lone Survivor a chance!
@Tiefseemiez "Disappointing week. A lot of discounts now that I already have XCX and Fast Racing Neo drowning all my spare time!"
Some of the sales will make me feel pretty guilty for paying that little. I am especially looking at the Curve discounts. Not that I am going to play those games, since I have too much backlog on 3DS and Wii U anyway. But those prices are impossible to resist.
Surely there's some mistake on some of those prices? The Swindle for £2? What a race to the bottom for a game that is undoubtedly worth more than that.
That is a fair few discounts O.o
I'll be getting Minecraft and the last couple Curve Digital games I don't yet own. Plus a few other discounts if I can afford it.
Those Curve Digital discounts, om nom nom nom nom. I can't dismiss them at those bargain prices.
I'll dowload Minecraft and the PW games. Maybe something else.
NOE heard the backlash, well they couldn't avoid it after their Cyber "sale". Now if fair's fair, America will get 8 games only available in pairs, for a day only, with a lesser discount and it'll only run for 4 days. Then they'll know what it was like.
Too bad I own pretty much everything there worth owning. I'll get Thomas was Alone and The Swindle.
Wow this is great. Finally some great discounts on proper e-shop games for the Wii U. I'll be picking up about half of these.
The Swindle is a proper bargain at £1.99. It was £4.19 (reduced!) on PSN last week when I bought it, but would have preferred the Wii U version.
As always, I'll recommend Code of Princess (especially if you were a fan of Guardian Heroes) and all the Mighty Switch Force games. But of course, you should own all of them already
Thomas Was Alone at that price too.
Just The Swapper and The Swindle for me as I already have Stealth Inc 2 day one. I'm not gonna buy the other Curve Digital just because they're cheap but because they're not my thing.
Only top 5 to 3ds are worthy. The rest is a joke.
Mighty Switch Force and Fractured Soul are also worthy but who haven't owned them yet?
Mario Tennis 64 for me! Finally available on Wii U without Ultra Smash!
If I had the monies I would be all over those discounts and a couple of the new releases (still haven't got Fast Racing Neo yet). Oh well, I'll give my recommendation out to the Ace Attorney games again, for a little under £25, you could do much, much worse than 4 brilliantly funny and original games.
A lot of good sales here, I will be picking a few of those up!
Come Thursday, people will be pretty disappointed with what NoA has to offer by comparison :-/
Well there's that Code of Princess/Umihara Kawase European discount.
Still, nothing for me this week. I'm tempted by Code of Princess, but I'm saving it for something else.
Wow some great discounts there, i will pick up a few on both systems
Wowzers, now that is a nice Christmas sale.
The Swindle for 3 euros is just crazy, instabought!
If you buy Minecraft and all the DLC, it cost €71. That's ridiculous. Then again have you seen how much buying all the DLC for Smash Bros. costs? There really should be an option to buy it all in a season pass for a reasonable price.
@Sligeach the only title that I wanted from Nintendo's sale was XC. But I didn't have access to my Wii U that day...
Great discounts from Curve Digital. The discount for the railway simulator is funny though.
But since I already have all the Curve games I want, I'll just get Steel Empire.
@Sligeach
That is why i haven't cared about most(all?) modern games since forever(?)/some time. DLC is a disease/plague of video games industry.
@Sligeach : Smash Wii U + 3DS + DLC + the entire Smash line of amiibo... that's a lot of magic beans. Costs well over AU$1200 at full retail price.
Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara for me ! I prefer to buy it on Wii U than PS3.
Retropixel gaming is perfect on the Wii U Gamepad... And there are more chances that Wii U games will be backward compatible with NX. Not as PS3 games with PS4...
I will buy Phoenix Wright/s eventualy later. I hope.
I have exceeded my monthly limit of cash per video games already.
If that Phoenixes not untill 31st December but 1st or 2nd January but NO.
Rest of s*it have got greater period. It's not fair (like all/most things in this world ).
Holy smoke, that's a lot! Cannot wait for Thursday. Thank you Nintendo Europe!
Still no Rune Factory 4 sale. Obviously a crap week.
Finally Phoenix Wright discounts! Will get both the trilogy and dual destinies Been waiting for those
Wonder how many minecraft 'copies' will sell on the WiiU at that price.
Like what? This is the 3rd week with "Nothing for me this week" in a row!
A load of stuff too get this week but still 50/50 on Minecraft Wii U Edition might wait for the retail version too come out.
Will definitely get Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies as I keep missing a sale on it but not this time. I may also get the persona q theme and on top of that I will get Fast racing neo also.
Von Sottendorf, Lone Survivor, Stealth Inc. 2 and Fractured Soul for me. And maybe The Swindle and Phoenix Wright trilogy. Awesome week, and discounts
WOW! I mean for weeks there's nothing and then this. Definitely getting The Swindle and Nova 111. Would also recommend Fracture Soul on the 3DS as it's a neat little game.
Surely this has to be the best week for deals all year cant remember a better week.
Nova-111
SUMICO
Proun+
Gunslugs 2
Lone Survivor
The Swindle
all look great at those prices.
Pretty big collection of games for sale i think everyone will find something of intrest and XyVoX there was a pretty great one from Bandai and Capcom recently 1 month or so ago. As for me will take Fractured souls and Street fighter 4 since don't have that on 3ds.
Nothing for me this week. Minecraft doesn't interest me, and I've already got the games I want that's in the discounted list.
@ThomasBW84 Personally, I wish there were some VC discounts thrown in.
Real shame Nintendo/Disney/EA/Lucas/whoever couldnt grace us this week with something Star Wars for the release of the new film. Yeah there's new Disney Infinity stuff coming, but I would prefer the return of the Super Star Wars games or heck, even giving us an N64 game or 2.
Very packed week this week, but I wonder if Sakurai could surprise us tomorrow with a release of Smash Bros N64 or even Brawl, along with the tons of DLC?
@Tiefseemiez: Disappointing week. Nothing for me again, lol.
I just want the european release of that pictionaryish game, been out in the US for ages now. Would be great for xmas family time.
I'll pick something up from the sales post-Christmas when I've been given a bunch of eShop cards.
I recommend Swords & Soldier II on Wii U for €13! Awesome game from a great indie developer!
@XyVoX
You made my day. Your avatar/gif .
If it was normal person i won't laugh. Not my sense of humor. But this .
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse on 3DS for me! Need it on the GO!
Hmm i might pick up Street Fighter for the 3DS.
Would not mind having a second fighting game beside DOA.
I hope these Curve sales come to North America. I'd love to pick up The Swindle and Nova 111 at those prices. Swords & Soldiers 2 would be great too. It's been high on my list since it came out.
Seems The Swindle price is an error. It's 50% off, and not until next week. Still definitely worth £6 mind, but not as good a deal as this.
Tempted but Ace Attorney Trilogy for the 3DS but you never know what Christmas may bring so I'm going to wait it out.... Everyone should pick up Sayonara though, amazing eShop game!
Now THAT is a sale. Curve digital, I salute you
I'll be buying almost everything they have on sale I don't already have, especially swindle!
If anyone was still unsure about stealth Inc2 then now it the time, incredible value and quality bat that price!!
I have such itch for a rogue like game and the NOVA-111 seems to be one of the better recent examples of that sort.
New Super Mario Bros. in Europe!! It's about time!!
Stealth Inc 2 for £1.59? If you don't have it already please buy it for that price, it's a brilliant game
When a game launches with more than 10 DLC packs, there is absolutely nothing positive left to say about it. Minecraft is officially the most shameless and obnoxious ripoff since Angry Birds on consoles and iPhones.
@Kaze_Memaryu Technically those DLC packs were released ages ago so they're not really launch. Plus they are just skins. You miss very little by not having them.
That curve digital sale is legendary!
I'm spending a couple just to get most of these. What a sale!
Isn't anybody else disappointed that there are no discounts for any Nintendo (or Ubisoft) games?
@Sligeach doubt it. This is organized by indies and seems to be Christmas related.
OOOooo lots of great discounts!
The Swindle and Shiftlings definitely.
I recommend everybody to try one of the Phoenix Wright if they haven't tried them yet. There are some other interesting games on sale, which is good.
I think Minecraft on consoles is weird since the PC version offers so much more. But Im getting Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy for sure! I was so close buying it some days ago, and now its on sale. That's fortunate, ^w^
I have no choice but to buy some curve digital games at those prices, wow!
Wow, what a week! Whoever says "Nothing for me this week" better change hobby, honestly; Stealth Inc 2, The Swindle, Lone Survivor, The Swapper, Duck Tales, D&D and more, yes please!
@andrea987 They may already have those games.
@riChchestM All the more reason it has no right to warrant additional money. The stuff is already done, so what's the point?
Also, it's not about what kind of DLC content it is, it's simply a matter of principle. The creators actually have the audacity to sell this game for a ludicrous price point right off the bat, and expect even more money from people for some extras. I don't see a single redeeming factor here.
Ah crap, all of those reductions! My poor wallet! Ouch!
Will definitely be downloading some of the discounted games.
Farewell Cube Life, we hardly knew ye.
I don't think they managed to come through with a single one of their promised updates anyway, so thankfully the proper Minecraft is arriving.
@Kaze_Memaryu the Wii U version in Europe is already cheaper than on other consoles so stop complaining about the price. It would also be unfair that Wii U get the DLC for free, but other systems would have to pay for it. If you think the price is too high, don't get the game. I will be buying the Simpson's and Doctor Who packs.
It's not gonna have the table games cause it would get rated 18+
So many discounts, so many games I'll end up buying and never playing.
Really need to learn to resist an eshop discount!
@wazlon I had fun with Fractured Soul too for a few hours. Keep meaning to go back to it.
Is this the moment I try a Shantae game? And which platform?
Loving that Wii U sale. Curve Digital are going super aggressive!
FFS why can't NA get great releases like these? Feel like it's been 12 weeks.
@lighteningbolt79 Except that this is not true. The retail versions have the same price on other platforms, but all download versions on other consoles are cheaper than 30 bucks, ranging from 20-25€. Also, whether I get this game or not (which I won't, because screw Minecraft) has nothing to do with Mojang being greedy.
@Kaze_Memaryu I meant in the UK.
This is a big spend week for me, I'll definitely pick up ace attorney trilogy and probably Minecraft and Stealth inc
@Dakt cheaper to download I meant. There is no point comparing physical with downloads because of cause physical will be cheaper.

The Swindle is not discounted, which is a shame. It would been the most biggest sale in this whole Christmas sale...
The Swindle isn't even on sale. What a waste of time.
Was gonna buy the swindle BUT after looking on eshop it only one isn't on sale.....
@Kolzig @AcridSkull @Tate24 The Swindle is apparently being discounted next week to £6. This was listed in error. Thanks for the heads up @deKay
Well, The Swindle was the one I wanted the most, so...yeah
Just played a few missions of Swords and Soldier 2. It's fantastic. I can easily recommend it to anyone who loved the first one
Swords & Soldiers 2 and Stealth Inc. 2 are great games. Especially in multiplayer thanks to the gamepad. Curve really did some great and unique stuff with the co-op in Stealth Inc. 2 and the Level Editor is a nice bonus.
Not sure if this deal is in the EU but just checked the NZ eShop and Lord of Magna is 30% off, was not there last I checked... odd... only ever seen the eShop update Thursday/Friday.
I bring it up since NZ seems to follow EU Sales besides the few games we don't have our on eShop.
