It would seem that Animal Crossing: New Horizon's grip on the gaming public is loosening, as the insanely popular title continues its fall down the UK charts.
2020's lockdown hit was in fourth place last week, but seven days later and it finds itself at number 7 in the chart. Fellow Switch titles Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Minecraft also slumped a little this week, settling at sixth and tenth position respectively. Bravely Default II – the Switch's biggest new release of the last week – lands in eleventh place, just outside of the top ten.
However, last week's chart-topper – Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury – retains the top spot, so it's not all bad.
Persona 5 Strikers enters the chart in fifth place, while PS5 title Spider-Man: Miles Morales climbs from ninth to second thanks to the fact that more PS5 hardware stock became available over the past week.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
1 | 1 | Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury |
9 | 2 | Spider-Man: Miles Morales |
Re-entry | 3 | The Last of Us: Part 2 |
2 | 4 | FIFA 21 |
New | 5 | Persona 5 Strikers |
3 | 6 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
4 | 7 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
5 | 8 | Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War |
7 | 9 | Grand Theft Auto V |
6 | 10 | Minecraft (Switch) |

No bravely default 2 😔
Not even a mention....
@UltimateOtaku91 Just narrowly missed at 11th I believe. For reference, Bravely Second charted at 12th at debut, and Bravely Default didn't chart at all from what I am reading (didn't even break the top 40).
@UltimateOtaku91 @MS7000 Yep, I've updated the story to reflect this.
Suprised to see Persona 5 Strikers in the top 5, especially for the UK (not that it will last ).
Had a feeling given the rather low position in the eshop charts that Bravely Default II wouldn't be here. Surprised to see TLoU2 return though.
Because the original did nearly 6 million I wasn't sure if the Switch version would outsell it. But I guess the trend of the Switch ports exceeding the originals isn't ending yet.
@Grumblevolcano Might be due to sales as it came out 9 months ago, and/or due to a brief surge in ps5 availability last week. Would also explain Spidey going up to second.
@JohnnyC I saw the Push Square article on the charts and it was a sale, TLoU2 was under £20.
I'm surprised there are enough people out there, who haven't yet bought Animal Crossing, to make a dent in the charts. How is that game even selling, anymore?! EVERYBODY has it!!
@CowCatcher
That would still count toward the weekly sales chart so not sure what your point is.
@Jayenkai New Switch owners buying it probably.
Persona 72% PS4 28% Switch, seems about right considering it is primarily a Playstation series.
Good week still with 4 Switch titles in the top 10 and the somewhat niche Bravely Default 2 finishing just outside.
The charts are pretty much going to be a mixture of evergreen Switch titles, COD, Fifa, GTAV, and Playstation titles (depending on PS5 stock) for the forseeable until the next big release which is Rise I think?
@Jayenkai We only got it at Christmas. I get some games on release, but sadly don't have the free time to justify buying every game I want on release day, and based on the charts there's a lot of people in a similar position. Given there's c.70m switches in people's hands which represents c.1% of the world's population (assuming only 1 person plays each switch, which of course isn't true) and given Switches continue to sell to the remaining c.99% of the planet, it's no surprise that people want the biggest games (Mario Kart and Animal Crossing) with their shiny new console.
3D Word deseves it, is one of my favourite Mario Games and wasn't as succsessful as it could be on the Wii U.
Now with a bigger Customer Base it can show its Potential.
I think Animal Crossing was released at the perfect time at the beginning of lockdown. It’s Spring here in the UK also it’s no surprise that people are less inclined to buy such a time draining game
I mean, nearly all the top 10 are Switch games. Definitely not a bad week for Nintendo.
@JohnnyC 70 million is actually 1% of the world’s population. Not being as smart ass, just letting you know 🤓
@The_Pixel_King Thanks, edited, that's what I get for multi-tasking.
If I'm still playing it, do I have to keep buying it? Not sure it's losing its grip!
30+ million copies of ac sold is astounding.
Its great seeing 3D World gets the sales it deserves, easily up there with the best of Mario.
@UltimateOtaku91
cant say im surprised if the comments on this site are anything to go by with most people posting they have no interest or will wait.
been playing it this weekend, while it doesn't reinvent the wheel (which is good thing in someways). its a great JRPG harking back to the days of the snes and ps1 eras
A big batch of PS5s arrived in the UK recently so that probably explains the changes a bit. Switch console stock is still surprisingly low.
Kinda sad to see Animal Crossing getting beat by a port of an over seven year old game. But at least AC has been out for almost a year now.
Mario 3D World deserves every single purchase...a truly outstanding game! I still own it on WiiU but 100% say the Switch version is worth every penny! p.s Nintendo UK store is now selling the 3D World steel book separately on their store (£14.99) if anyone needs it
@Harmonie Bowser's Fury is 7 years old?
@Clyde_Radcliffe Super Mario 3D World is. A small portion added on top of the game to try to coax me to spend $60 on a seven year old game I already own is not something I put too much weight on, TBH.
Makes sense, ACNH is almost a year old now, and MK8 is older still, SM3DW is a worthy potential successor for the "What, still on #1?"-trophy. ^_^
I know this is a Nintendo site, but I think seeing Spider-Man: Miles Morales near the top. Maybe not at the top, but near it.
@Why_Do_I_Exist
What do you think about it?
@Harmonie
Others do, people who already bought it on Wii U aren't the target market. It is the 70 odd million who own a Switch but never had a Wii U that is.
@TheFullAndy I think it's pretty fun, even if it isn't that long. It still has post-game content, but the main campaign is only 5 to 9 hours, which is still pretty good.
@Why_Do_I_Exist
Cool, will definitely be picking it up along with my PS5 when I can get my hands on one.
Looks like my fears were justified. BD2 will not outsell OT despite being the better game. Remember, people will buy sub par games so long as they look pretty. Honestly, if forums are any indication BD2 is gonna fail based entirely on its visuals even though the actual gameplay and characters are fantastic not to mention leagues better than OT. Not looking forward to OT becoming a new brand and BD slipping into obscurity.
Everybody has Animal Crossing and Mario Kart 8 at this point, as they're top sellers xD
@Grumblevolcano TLOU2 dropped to £15 this week
UK retail launch sales:
> Bravely Default: ~5,500
> Bravely Second: ~4,500
> Bravely Default 2: ~5,000
Bravely Default 2's launch sales should be above that of the first game once digital sales are included.
With that being said, the series is still very niche in the UK. By comparison, Octopath Traveler sold 2X more retail copies at launch back in 2018.
So sad. As long as people keep buying Nintendo's overpriced ports, we won't get new games.
Good to see 3D World doing so well. Hopefully this is reflected worldwide and it can get the success it deserves, but was denied by being stuck on the Wii U. Bowsers Fury is great fun too, in fact it’s a great package overall.
Seems like solid starts for P5 Strikers and Bravely Default 2 which are pretty niche over here.
There’s supposed to be another batch of PS5 stock this week so expect a similar effect on next weeks chart.
With these type of numbers, it seems like Super 3D World + Bowser's Fury has a good shot at exceeding the lifetime shipments of the original Super Mario 3D World by the end of March 2021 when Nintendo's 2020 fiscal year comes to an end.
@Jayenkai yeah, isnt it the second best selling game on switch?
@TheFullAndy still really happy its on switch
@InkIdols
Of course, good for the fans!
@TheFullAndy Can confirm. Picked it up last weekend, and am loving it
@UltimateOtaku91 well yeah it's number 11 it you read the article
@Andy110983 at first the author of this post didn't mention anything about bravely default 2, but then he changed it hence the 3rd comment
