Update #2 - 9th June 2021, 17:30 BST
It seems that Nintendo of Europe (as this exploit only seemed to be available briefly in Europe) has closed the loophole so that no-one will get the Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Expansion Pass for free; that's fair enough, right?
Emails have gone out to customers that downloaded the "purchase bonus" and then had accounts showing that they'd 'purchased' the Expansion Pass. The short summary is that you don't get the expansion content for free, and due to the fix implemented it won't be possible to legitimately buy the content until its launch day, when the system will presumably refresh and the option to purchase will return. The full email is below.
On Friday May 28th 2021, the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass was made available for purchase on Nintendo eShop. Buying the Expansion Pass entitles users to a special Purchase Bonus of equippable items that can be used in-game immediately.
Unfortunately, an error on Nintendo eShop led to the Purchase Bonus being briefly made available to all users. Furthermore, downloading the Purchase Bonus without buying the Expansion Pass gave the impression that the Expansion Pass was then purchased, when this is not the case. As you are one of the users affected, we'd like to apologise for this error.
Currently, users who downloaded the Purchase Bonus without buying the Expansion Pass are able to equip the related items in-game. However, once Expansion Pass Wave 1 – Pulse of the Ancients becomes available, these items will no longer be usable unless the Expansion Pass is purchased. This will not affect your save file or ability to play the game.
Users affected by this issue are currently unable to purchase the Expansion Pass via Nintendo eShop. This will be resolved once Expansion Pass Wave 1 – Pulse of the Ancients is released, at which point the purchase button will be accessible again.
Once again, we apologise for this error and any inconvenience caused.
Update 28th May 2021, 20:30 BST — Looks like the eShop error has been corrected.
Original Story: Now, we can't guarantee that this deal will be permanent, we can't guarantee that you'll be able to keep it, and we definitely can't guarantee that it'll be the case for long, but right now it looks like you can grab the Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Expansion Pass for free, thanks to an exploit.
If you download the free "purchase bonus" on the eShop (search for "Hyrule Warriors" and it should be the second result), it looks like you'll get the Expansion Pass too, saving yourself a tidy £17.99 — as confirmed by a few of our staff members. The exploit even works if you don't own the game, so you can bank it for future use, if you want.
We've only confirmed this to work on EU accounts, although some people have discovered that you can grab the Expansion Pass on an EU account and it'll work in-game even if you're playing on a US account, at least.
The purchase bonus was made available today, and includes a new weapon and costume for Link. The Expansion Pass is split into a June and a November release. You can check out what's included in each in the image below.
Let us know if this works for you!

Nobody:
Nintendolife:
Go download paid dlc for free (if you can haha!)
Yup, it worked for me. A very nice purchase bonus indeed, a £17.99 bonus.
Downloading now to try, I'll edit with the results of my test 😁
Edit: ok I was not expecting the eshop to list the bundle as purchased, but yeah the game lists the DLC as purchased so it definitely worked! I can only hope they have no way of reversing the process 😅
Hahahaha it worked! Bizarre. I don’t even own the game 😂
Just tried on my brothers switch since he owns the game, didn’t work as it said it was unavailable now. Let me know if it works for anyone else.
EDIT: Just realized it says it’s for EU only. I saw the beginning of the article and just rushed to try it since I didn’t want it to get fixed before I tried lol.
I don't even own this game but I might try it, Don't really feel like making a whole account for this tho.
Not working in the US for me. Course I didn't make an EU account. I'd rather just pay the money cause I'm not that committed for a price glitch lol.
That'll be crazy if it actually works - I'm sure Nintendo will reverse this for those who got the DLC for free.
Got it with my Australian account I thought was useless. I guess not I feel kind of scummy but at least it's legit
I feel like we are all looting lol.
This is going to be a costly mistake for Nintendo. And yes, it works on my Dutch account.
It even works if you don't own the game.
Wow, didn't expect it to actually work 😲
works on na thx
Managed to get it while I was at work. Had to remove my linked payment method in order for it to work. I don't think we could get into trouble remember that a good number of people managed to score the Captain Toad Treasure Tracker DLC for free and never got into trouble for it.
I had to make a new account, but it was worth the trouble! I bet it'll get removed soon though.
EDIT: For those wondering, I live in the US, where it was at listed as not for purchase. I made an account for Australia, and was able to download it for free! I'm glad that it works for my 100% US playthrough. But I later looked back on the Australian eshop and found it labeled as not for download. I believe it's fixed.
Worked for me I don't own the game though
Worked for me now to see if we can keep it
How is this not the same as promoting pirated software?? Ultimately Nintendo isn’t making its money.
Damn it they are selling us $25 amiibos. Let me screw my besties once!!
Worked for me too, we'll see if nintendo let us keep it.
June 14th 2021, E3: we open our Nintendo Direct with Weird hylian script and glowy blue stuff. It's the new Zelda game trailer fully revealing all the goods! However it is delayed until March 2022.
The trailer to follow is one for the expansion pass for Hyrule Warriors which will all be preview content for the new game and the first batch will release following the presentation.
It says it's purchased the whole expansion pass for me despite only downloading the purchase bonus, so it seems to work!
@Matl Only the bonus is available now. It would've done the same thing if you purchased the pack.
If the eshop works like for the PSN, all the licences will soon be revoked (remember Valkyria Revolution a few days ago?) but heh. It's funny.
I'm too much of a p***y to try, but I'm glad it's working for everyone else.
What about japanese account?
I've already bought the DLC, so I can't try...if only they've already released the stuff it will only be available in June...
Done it as well but surely there's no chance of us actually keeping it
Didn't work on US, saw it was a Europe only thing, set up another account on the Europe eshop but again was unable to nab it, guess I was too late.
I tried 20 minutes ago and it didn’t work so they fixed it.
Nothing there for me
8.pm UK I can confirm it still works works with UK accounts. thanks NL. you lovely guys!>
Really glad this image says "expanded roster" under June. Saw other images that said "new character" singular and was concerned. Feel very confident we will get playable Purah and Robbie in this as they seem to be the focus.
@angus_luissen just tried on a UK account on a US console and sadly doesn't work
Dang, they pulled that item so it doesn’t work! Worth a shot!
Looks like the bonus is now being tagged "not for sale" in eshop updates.
I got the free button. But wasnt able to proceed. I guess i needed to have the account associated to a switch. (I didnt had a profile with AU region nor my switch anywhere near)
I live in the UK with a UK/EU account.
Just tried to get it and it’s says the purchase bonus is listed as “not available for purchase”
Think it’s been fixed now.
@sanderev Damn, seems I got in just in the nick of time
@EliteXeos @neufel now just to wait and see if they can remove it from people's accounts
@neufel well a couple dozen people got a good laugh at Nintendo. Take that you evil corporation. Today the little guy won!
Enjoy it while you can because they will revoke all those purchases
@carlos82
I wouldn’t blame Nintendo for doing just that.
However the exploit is entirely their fault, so they can’t really blame people for grabbing it.
Everyone that tried the loophole now gets charged DOUBLE...
MWAHAHAHAHAHA
It was a test and you all failed...
Its gone. Unavailable for Purchase.
@EliteXeos As I said in my previous comment, it has happened multiple times on PSN, and yes Sony usually revokes the licenses (so even if you've downloaded the game you can't play it, like if you switched accounts).
It is fair, and some countries have laws protecting businesses from "price errors" when the error is so enormous that the client should know that this price is impossible.
@EliteXeos yeah I'm not expecting to keep it, a bit of excitement for a bit though
@duffmmann yup, they fixed it while I was typing apparently.
@neufel Yeah, but the eShop downloads the licenses to your primary Switch. They can't simply revoke them. They could detach the "Bonus" from the base expansion so you end up with just the bonus. But I doubt they will do that.
@neufel
I’m not saying that the people who managed to grab it won’t have it removed or the licence revoked.
But that it’s a possibility they may get to keep it.
We have to remember here that while it happened on the PSN store several times, that’s a different company entirely. There’s also a fact that that this slip-up seems to be entirely EU server-side related. Different countries and regions have different laws, policies and clauses.
It’ll be interesting for sure to see what happens from here.
This didn’t work for me, the purchase bonus says “Not Available For Purchase”. Oh well, I’d rather pay for it and support the developers anyway.
I have the game, but it doesn't work😔
@Kaiffe123 Yeah, it's better to pay for it. And to be honest, I didn't have the game. But now I also ordered the physical version of the game.
I feel like the people who do this are probably going to get punished by Nintendo for doing it.
So they fixed it, but did the people who got it for free lose it?
@Heavyarms55 I haven't yet
@Heavyarms55 I did this on an alt account, it still says I own the expansion pass.
@VoidofLight unlikely...it's their fault if it was possible.
Lmao if i can find an extremely cheap copy maybe I'll get to play it with dlc and everything but definitely not gonna spend $60 on a musou
As it is, this pass is just gonna sit there in my account being useless
Got it today by accident, thought I was getting the costume only.
I don't expect them to let us keep it though.
@West3DP
That's the image from the trailer, but NoE shared the new one with the red backgrounds on Twitter today and they also say "expanded roster" so that was likely just an error specific to the NoA one.
@Eel Interesting. I guess Nintendo just decided it was easier to say "whelp, some folk got lucky. Not worth the effort and bad PR to take back the DLCs"
@Heavyarms55 It could still happen in the future. Stopping the new sales was top priority for sure.
A DLC pack accidentally going out for free is definitely newsworthy, but I'm not sure how I feel about the language of the article here. Basically telling everyone to take advantage of a clear mistake and screw developers out of money.
Showing as “not available to purchase for me”
@KateGray Just want to say, I appreciate your writing style. I can tell usually by the tagline if it's something you've written. Your articles are always enjoyable, and I'm glad you're writing for NL!
I pre purchased mine months ago, gotta admit there will be an email going out to Nintendo if people do get to have it for free
@Knuckles it means a lot to have a genuine echidna celebrity say such nice things! <3
Thank you for taking the time to be so lovely
Not working here.
@Scrubicius
As the article now says, the exploit has been fixed.
Ah well, missed it. To be honest I'm kinda done with the game. Seems like the dlc is just more of the same.
@blockfight Yeah same, after 100% the game, a few characters and weapons aren't really worth going back.
I always thought Nintendo was above charging for DLC. I thought that’s what EA and Activision did. And what whiners call incomplete games at launch like arms, Kirby, splatoon were purposely designed that way to keep you playing after launch. Genius.
I wonder how many of those who gleefully profited from Nintendo's mistake here were also the same people lambasting Nintendo for being "immoral" and "evil" last week because of an amiibo...
@mlj11 in my mind the piracy isn’t right but at the same time nintendo may not be legally required to but should morally treat its fan with some sort of dignity instead of price gouging them. Neither look is good. But a few dozen people doing wrong doesn’t make Nintendo’s recent business practices acceptable
My conscience wouldn’t let me 😂
@sixrings You mentioned morals? As in, you don't think a business is morally entitled to set a price for their product so they can pay their engineers and artists for their work? Is that it?
Is the amiibo expensive? Compared to other typical ones, yes. But has anyone considered that it's because it has two characters instead of the usual one? That's more material, more paint. I don't see how selling it at a higher rate than other, smaller amiibo is a price gouge.
Even if it's a price gouge, the silly thing is entirely optional and barely does anything more than providing a cheap way of cheesing Skyward Sword's dungeons. You don't have to buy it if you don't like it.
Whether you'll admit it or not, your post downplays people's theft by trying to cast aspersions on Nintendo's pricing decisions.
Since you've opted to take the moral high ground here, maybe you'd like to share what you'd do if you were in Nintendo's shoes?
I wonder how many people who complained about the Amiibo leapt at this and didn't pay? I would imagine Nintendo will be able to reverse this anyway, and see which accounts paid for it and which didn't. Depends how Nintendo are feeling about it I guess after all the over the top hot air Skyward Sword's Amiibo has had on social media the last week or so. They might let this one slide just to keep the louder 5% quiet...
@EliteXeos Yes I didn't see the update of the article when I tried it.
@Bentendo1609 I've learned one simple lesson when dealing with (social) media on the Internet. People will always complain.
I was able to snag it yesterday though it'll be interesting to see how Nintendo will handle this situation and if the people who got it for free will actually be able to keep it.
Nintendo eShop is broken as *****.
When released, I bought a retail copy of TOKI, and played it on my Switch;
then , some months ago, for commodity I bought the digital eshop version for € 1,00.
BUT if I try to play it, my Switch still asks for the cartridge. No matter if I got 2 different licenses (1 from physical, 1 from digital version), eShop will ever ask for the cartridge.
It's only € 1,00, but things as that one makes me want to NEVER buy a thing from the online shop in the future.
@Outlander999 You should delete the game completely (beside the save files) and download it using the eShop.
@VoidofLight Punished for what exactly? How do they know if anyone did this on purpose nor just saw the "Purchase Bonus" and claimed it?
If anything will happen, then it will only be removing the Season Pass from the account. But punish? I don't think so....
@MajinSoul @Bentendo1609 I doubt Nintendo would even be able to reliably identify those whose payments were legitimate compared to those who got the season pass via this method, since (in my case at least) the eshop considers the pass purchased I imagine Nintendo would have to dig through (hopefully encrypted and protected) payment details to determine who did and did not actually pay for it... I'm sure I don't need to tell you it would be a massive violation of data protection laws for Nintendo to do this, payment processes are encrypted for a reason!
@Otoemetry yes the payment system is obviously encrypted, as is any company. But if you were to contact customer service for example, they’d still be able to see what you’ve purchased and how much you paid. You won’t see card details, addresses and so on… but you’ll see a purchase list and how much someone paid. So they’ll see the DLC, and great big 0 next to it.
Locking quality of life features behind an amiibo is the market; people can choose to buy or not buy.
But people taking advantage of a company being incompetent is also the market. No laws were broken, they saw a great deal and took it.
@Bentendo1609 obviously I'm not privy to the mechanics of the eshop's systems, but as I mentioned before there's a big "purchased" label against the pass in my eshop account so I'm making an assumption that it's not as easy for them to figure out who has actually paid and who hasn't. Think about how many different methods there are of paying for a purchase and that's why I believe they won't be able to reverse it so easily, I think if they were going to it would have happened already.
@Outlander999 Weird. I played Dark Souls Remastered on my Switch and then gave my copy away and bought it digitally. I can play it without any problem. You might need to contact Nintendo Support for that since it shouldn't happen.
@mazzel finally I made it, thanks.
Deleted all.
Downloaded it from the start in the eshop.
However, awful user experience.
@Devlind finally I succeeded
@Outlander999 nice
They could implement a check or something when you insert the cartridge not a game that you already bought on the eShop and ask you which version you want to use.
I can't say I was expecting to keep it, I'll be buying this anyway when it actually releases
So, seems like players will get to enjoy that free Prototype Ancient Armor set "for now", but they'll get taken away if you haven't bought the expansion pass proper when it launches proper.
At least that made us debate for hours about hypothetical situations... and in the end, isn't that the goal of the comments section?
Yep, I also got the e-mail. Well, I wasn't really expecting to keep it. It looks like they simply will revoke the licenses for the "free" item.
Fair enough, really.
Pure speculation, but tons of folks must've taken advantage of this if Nintendo's practically reaching into folk's consoles to take back DLC.
I mean they're in their right to challenge ill-gotten gains (and it's better than banning accounts), but I'm so used to companies honoring errors on their end, and taking the hit.
They need internet connection in order to take it away, right?
Nintendo is so greedy. I know it shouldn't be free, but they should have let the people keep it. As goodwill. After all, its their own fault. Not the consumers fault.
@ReWane Well but YOU need a internet connection to download the future DLCs. I mean the only thing released so far is the purchase bonus
@ReWane you need an internet connection to download it too
Maybe they will cancel their Skyward Sword Amiibo pricing too.
I mean, fair enough. I expected something to be done about this. But I think Nintendo needs to show a lot with this expansion to make people want to spend $20.
The calamity, woe!
@Henmii How is this greedy? If a store forgot to lock an item up and no one was currently manning the registers that doesn't mean you're allowed to walk out of the store with the item. You still know, on a moral level, that what you are doing is stealing.
This isn't like nintendo intentionally set this up as a trap to trick consumers, this was an error on their part and greedy consumers swooped in to see if they could get away with it. They shouldn't honor anything. If this was a physical item in the real world not only would you not be allowed to keep it, you would also be fined for taking the item.
I realize I'm Coming off pretty harsh here, and believe me, I have no real sympathy for rich corporations. But, I'm also am not a fan of internet morality where "x" is bad, therefore I should get things for free!
So the ancient sword, what happens if I sell it or merge it with another weapon before it gets taken back?
It honestly took longer than I expected. Regardless, I'm looking forward to buying and playing the dlc at launch! I've been waiting for it since November 26.
Also the fix seems to be via an update for the expansion, so if I don’t update....
Honestly, I just love getting a formal email from Nintendo that begins "dear stink"
I love how they’re apologising to me for the fact I exploited an error. Honestly don’t mind not getting it for free anymore, it’s fair enough after all.
Well, it was worth a go. I only heard about this after Nintendolife basically told us to fill our boots hahaha. Yaaar.
@Chowdaire I see it more as if the store advertised an item as free and then willingly gave it to you for free (even giving you a receipt with it). And then sending you an email to tell you they made a mistake and want the item back. I don’t own the game or expansion so I’m not affected by this. This is just the way I see it.
Don't forget you need to update your game to use it.thats when you have to pay.no update no content
@ILIKECARGAME Except this was obviously an error and everyone that exploited it was aware of that fact.
@Chowdaire,
you make a good point there.
Do we have an actual release date yet?
