Funselektor Labs’ art of rally looks like it should be the most accessible rally sim of all time. Its bright colours and abstract environments almost create a false sense of security, distracting from an otherwise remarkably deep and challenging rally title. It retains the same authentic gameplay from its original PC release, but in moving over to the Switch the game has undergone some notable graphical downgrades.
Launching the game for the first time you’re greeted by a large totem character, who briefly addresses you before you’re sent off to roam about the land. This is pretty much the only time the game strays into more fantastical elements, and it’s a bizarre way to kick off an otherwise pure driving title. Once you start cruising around the initial free-roam location, however, it quickly dawns on you that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill arcade racer; this is an authentic take on rallying that may prove to be quite the shock for more casual players.
The free-roam locations are a good way to test your skills before you take on the races themselves. Littered around the environment are cassette tapes (which we’ll touch on a bit more shortly), photo opportunities, and letters that spell out R-A-L-L-Y; finding all of these will unlock more free-roam locations for you to wander. In addition to the photo opportunities, the game also comes with its own photo mode, meaning you can pause at any point and line up the camera for the perfect shot.
Photo mode does, however, highlight how much the Switch version of art of rally has been downgraded in terms of its visuals. In many ways the game is absolutely beautiful, particularly when the sunset pierces through the trees and lights up the track ahead. Generally, however, many of the game’s assets have been cut altogether. Trees that were visible on the PC (and now Series X/S) version of the game have disappeared, and the grass is nowhere to be seen, leaving the ground looking like a bland block of colour. The game’s framerate also takes a hit, running at 30FPS compared to the comparably smoother 60 on other platforms.
On the plus side, though, the incredible music has migrated over in its entirety, and this is where the presentation truly shines. The banging tunes make cruising around the tracks or free-roam environments an absolute joy. The collectible cassette tapes found in free-roam mode also unlock more music tracks, and we’d be hard pressed to choose a favourite out of the bunch.
The gameplay itself feels incredibly authentic considering the abstract nature of the presentation. Steering your vehicle around corners can be tricky, and the slightest instance of oversteer can cause you to careen off the side of the road. Stray too far, and the game will automatically recover your vehicle, adding a 5 second penalty onto your time. Mastering the controls can take a while when compared to other rally titles with a similar top-down approach, but the gratification gained from this is undeniably greater.
Despite its obvious visual shortcomings art of rally is still a nice looking game regardless; the gameplay, of course, shines through brightest, making this one of the most authentic, challenging rally titles in some time. The incredible music makes the price of admission worth it alone, and if you’re after a surprisingly nuanced, deep rally game, this is the one to go for.

I didn't even know this was on Switch. Looks great!
I love it when we get these reviews that basically say ‘the game’s really good, just play it anywhere other than Switch’.
Played it on Game Pass. Loved the look, but I didn't like much else about it.
@nessisonett Yep, my thoughts exactly. If they do a PS5 version, I’ll buy it there. In the meantime, I’ll be patiently sitting on my hands trying not to grab it on Switch.
It’s great on the switch no regrets at all. Yeah there are some issues with the visuals in the background but the gameplay is fantastic. Plenty to do and see and unlock. I have GPU and still have no regrets buying it on switch. It’s perfect for hand held gaming.
Also the difficulty settings allow the game to be accessible to all. As easy is as it should be. Easy.
I feel like this game really shouldn't look as bad as it does on Switch? I know the Switch is old tech and all, but it doesn't seem like the devs gave much effort to porting this over. But I dunno, I'm not a game dev.
@nessisonett unless you want to play handheld.
Can you use the right analogue stick to accelerate and brake?
AVOID THIS.
30fps isnt so bad but the controls have sooooo much input lag. Its probably the worst handling racer ive ever played.
People on the artofrally subreddit are pretty angry about the huge visual downgrade. Hopefully they patch this up, the original aesthetic had me quite interested 😕
The Switch version of this game has become a joke on various subreddits for how downgraded the graphics are...
@nessisonett game pass has saved me so much money. I have bought so many games in the past that came out on game pass, so now i wait to see if switch games I'm interested in will release on Xbox. If so, it's best not to buy on switch, so i don't have to deal with graphics downgrade, but also because it may end up on game pass. I'm glad they're honest, at least. Everyone who has other systems besides switch already assume this is the case, i bet. I do. Only reason to buy on switch, in that case, is if it's your only console, or u really want to play it in handheld.
Sorry, Ollie, this is NOT a "rally sim". U should know the difference between a sim & an arcade style racing/rally game...
@StefanN how can they patch a hardware limitation?
Why does such a visually unimpressive game need to get downgraded on Switch? I had worried about the Switch trailers prior to launch, but figured it was an issue with the video capture, not the game itself. As is, this will be leaving my wishlist
Even the Xbox One version has major pop in so it is more a port problem than hardware, hopefully they will be able to improve it with patches, it's still a great game though no matter how it looks
I’m looking forward to Rally Rush Origins.
How did this get an 8?
Man they cut a lot of scenery down.
The comparison shots I've seen between the Switch version and others is remarkable.
The Forest in the background must've been cut down by lumberjacks in the Switch version, it looks like a barren wasteland compared to other versions.
Hard pass
It’s well past alarming that some of these games take such substantial hits in porting to Switch.
@commentlife - It’s crazy how much of a downgrade it is, but I was expecting it due to a previous experience. I was hoping that I would have been proved wrong though…
I originally bought the game on Steam on release day. I attempted to play it on my brand new $1,600 MacBook Pro since it was compatible (I’m aware that Macs aren’t the go-to for gaming). It chugged so hard that I had to basically turn all the visual options to low or off in order to have a playable framerate (mimicking the styling of the Switch version).
However, it’s incredible on my XSX & my “cheap” Acer Nitro 5 laptop (3+ years old).
For as basic as it looks, there is a lot going on in the graphics department to make it appear so beautiful and immersive (apparently).
@MrChippyPancakes @nessisonett I have it on a decent PS4 Pro level PC and it’s not that great there either performance wise. The engine really struggles with forests and other environmental geometry.
It boggles my mind that you can do a low-poly game and not just absolutely nail the performance. I was hoping a low setting optimized for Switch would iron the frame rate out at whatever sacrifices, but it seems not to be the case.
Fun game when it’s working though.
@twztid13 in the same boat as you. Game pass is a life saver! $25 for this game on Switch or $1 for 3 months of Gamepass with this and 100+ other exclusive next gen titles, indie games (also on switch) and new releases. No brainer for the gamepass option, then I can decide if it deserves a purchase & where I want to play it after spending some initial time with the title
Yes this really is a game which grabs you with its graphics and aesthetic. But it's a top-down racer so it only takes about two minutes to become supremely unsatisfying. And it looks like on Switch you don't even get those two minutes of aesthetic bliss...
No grass at all is a pretty poor showing. That's just a textbook shader at this point; there's hundreds of games on Switch with sweet grass.
@MrChippyPancakes huh, very interesting. Looks can be deceiving. Valheim is like that, too. On the surface you think it’s just another low poly thing until the real-time weather eats your CPU like it’s a Skittle.
It's fun to laugh at people who think car racing is an art or a sport. It's just a game. People are funny.
Otherwise this looks like a neat looking experience.
Can't see this offers anything Mantis Burn Racing doesn't so it's an easy pass.
@StefanN @Josh2396 The developers of this game misled people by using PC screenshots on the Switch eShop. They only changed them when people clocked on. Very crappy behaviour. That's why people are pissed off at them on Reddit too.
@durrdevil Thank you for the warning! I will listen to it!
8 out of 10? Reads more like a 6 😟
This is €21 on the eShop. I’d pay that (or even higher) for a physical copy if… it wasn’t in the shoddy state described in the review.
Either the developers are lazy or they didn’t have the resources available to optimise the game. Either way I’m not buying it.
@RichyM This whole ‘release broken game patch later’ culture is seriously eroding trust in developers. It almost feels like early adopters are getting punished.
@Spagetti69 They give everything 8/10 🙄
8...?? Wow...
I believe we can't use that handheld argument anymore with Steam Deck's arrival.. accepting mediocrity is our biggest problem
Worst looking game I’ve seen on the Switch. This looks NOTHING like the promo shots doing the rounds. It’s just a slab of single colour background and your tiny car. Which completely ruins the rally vibes. 3/10
@twztid13 You should see some of the patchwork that's been done on Switch. Numerous games have gone from 30fps up to 60, often pretty much locked and with a nice resolution. It really is amazing the difference that can be made by great programmers with plenty of time to work on things.
Can't believe I haven't played this yet. I know I'll love it. Collecting cassettes to unlock more and more awesome music? That's my kind of driving game. Art of Rally is on sale on steam right now, so I might get it that way.
I guess one thing I noticed in videos of Switch gameplay is the way trees pop into their higher level of detail close to you. It seems like it would be better to just keep the low detail trees so there isn't such a sudden change. Managing LOD levels must be difficult. Games like Art of Rally and Lonely Mountains Downhill are exactly the kind of games I would love to have running at 60fps on my Switch. Maybe the Switch Pro will release next year and outclass the Steam Deck, hopefully.
@twztid13 "how can they patch a hardware limitation?"
They could attempt to optimize it instead of just cutting assets.
@60frames-please on this game, that can't run well on x1, or MacBook pro, patches can't save it on switch, imo. I'd love to be wrong.
@Danny429 they would do that on Xbox 1, if they were capable...
okay, a shoddy port gets 8/10. go home nintendolife, you're drunk XD
@twztid13 Yeah, prolly unlikely. But with Ori they had frame drops on Xbox one and even Xbox one X, then after optimizing for 60fps on Switch they used (I think) some of those techniques to lock the Xboxes to 60 (and of course it's 120 on Series). So sometimes Switch save the frame rate day for it's bigger brothers and sisters (I don't know the sex of the various consoles).
@Deviant-Dork what an incredibly ignorant thing to say.
@Dround87 To you that's ignorant? Okay, and?
Slightly concerned that control inputs aren't really touched on, the game on PC is incredibly sensitive to input, I honestly couldn't figure out how that would translate to the Switch.
@Deviant-Dork no it just is ignorant. Period.
Will pick up when on sale. Looks nice.
Wonder if we will see a review of that other rally game. The one that has this top-down-view.
@Jamie_R I 100% agree, but I would say it's a good idea to not pre order anything especially if there is no pre order bonus (as in a temporary cheaper price or extras), I tend to check reviews or gameplay first and then make a decision on if to buy the game.
Gameplay is very, very strong, great pleasure. Only Grid gave me these driving sensations.
give everything 8/10 blah blah blah medriocre port blah blah blah
Try it and basta.
@Dround87 cute opinion. I'll be over here laughing at the Olympic Sport of Car Racing. Ohhh wait...
A (mini)review of an “arcade-sim” (middle ground between the top down view and the physics/handling model) where handling and throttle are crucial to the experience that doesn’t even mention how playable it is (or not) with digital inputs while wasting most of its word count talking about other platforms. Something like Grid was ok with digital triggers and ain’t too bad played with analog gas on Right Stick, but Absolute Drift (same dev) was an absolute d… isgrace on that department.
The review, for a racing game, doesn’t even mention the racing itself, what kind of races, if besides the free roam the tracks are good and so on and on.
Also, the game has A LOT going on under the hood and it chugs on even powerful PCs but of course it’s as much an engine limitation as it is an awful Switch port because with all the downgrades it should’ve run much better.
Too bad because I was really looking forward to play it on Switch. Yes, I have GP, don’t care because 90% of my gaming is done on NSW portable mode. I use GP as a demoing platfom of sorts.
@Dround87 that's for the laughs.
(An incredibly ignorant thing to say is; "Jesus was real", "fire likes to cuddle" & "Minecraft is an objectively fun game".)
@Deviant-Dork no opinions. Just a fact. You're ignorant.
Terrible pricing and mediocre game. Wait for rush rally origins and do yourself a favour. I’ve played both and it’s the far superior (and cheaper) game.
I'd still rather play it on my Switch than my PS4
Playing it on XBox Gamepass. Really enjoying it. Wouldn't pay the $35AU that Nintendo are asking for, especially when it's been downgraded so much . I would class it as inbetween a sim and arcade racer. I find it very relaxing to play. And the soundtrack is killer.
@twztid13 The same way developers quite regularly manage to improve performance of existing software, I guess. First make it work, then make it fast, and all that.
