Original Story [Sat 24th Apr, 2021 16:30 BST]: City Connection has announced it's bringing a new collection to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. It'll arrive in Japan on 30th September, and will receive a standard and special edition release.
Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute contains a total of three games by Japanese developer Success Corporation. There's the 1997 title Cotton 2 and the 1998 releases Cotton Boomerang and Guardian Force. These versions are based on the Sega Saturn builds of each game, hence the name of the collection.
Each game will include quality of life features such as rapid-fire shooting as standard, the ability to rewind sequences, quick save and load and even online leaderboard support.

In related news, last year's Cotton Reboot! will be adding Appli ke Pumpkin and her companion Needle from Cotton 2 as a playable character in a free update. This same update is also expected to improve screen visibility and resolve various bugs. Along with this, Success is currently working on the 30th anniversary Cotton title for arcade.

Day one for me!
Me too.
The only thing I have really heard about these games is that they supposedly have incredible soundtracks and are shoot em ups. May try them out at some point.
GUARDIAN FORCE!! Holy hell, this is incredible.
Awesome, I love the Saturn Cotton games, I've got the cotton reboot physical edition on order so hopefully this gets the same treatment
A must buy for me!
I’m down for some Cotton!
EDIT: MORE Cotton, I mean... we already got one, and a sequel is coming as well... super cool! (And they even did a great job with the X68000 port which is actually a port, not emulated.)
Awe-diddly-awesome
Cor blimey... we go for years without any Cotton action, then there's a sudden explosion of it!!! Amazing news!
Looks like no Western release.
Ofc the West is left out in these games
I look forward to it never coming out physical here.
so i taken these games were quite good then.
I was seriously looking at my copy of guardian heroes this morning before I saw this... Lol good on them. We need more saturn classics!
Did the Cotton reboot come out in the EU eshop? I can't find it. Hoping for a western physical release anyway. Anyone got any info on that?
It's funny, I was literally just on Play-Asia thinking about buying Cotton Reboot.
@anoyonmus get it from playasia
3 of my favourite Saturn shooters. I'll definitely pre order an import copy.
At 7:30:01 in the embedded video, Strikers 2020 is in development! (platform and release date undetermined)
I see Deathsmiles 1&2 is coming to Switch as well. Really excited to see more 32/64 bit games making their way onto Switch.
Man, the music in Guardian Force is hawt. Really nice stuff. Good news! Yay!
NINJA APPROVED
@X68000 Hopefully Mushihimesama Futari Black Label comes to Switch, that would be pretty amazing.
...I think I saw one of these in a JonTronn video. lol
Are any of these in English?
Hoping they release the Dreamcast game next! Rainbow Cotton. It was a cool 3d Starfox-style rail shooter. Awesome graphics and design, though the controls weren’t great and it never got an English translation. Could be fun to revive it!
I’d much rather this be on hamster ACA if they weren’t stuck doing early 80s games.
So what I am hearing is I need to preorder this...
More Cotton is a good thing!
My brain read "Guardian Heroes" (the Saturn beat-em-up from Treasure), and I got excited for that.
My god, do they love to flap their Japanese GUMZ. get to the gameplay already before I turn 80...
Bet it will be picked up by one of the limited release publisher's for the west.
No way. Another one out of the blue.
@Paperboy No, the Cotton reboot isn't out in Europe yet.
There is a western physical release available for preorder in the Strictly Limited Games website. There may well be another, more widely available physical release in the future, but if you really want a physical copy of Cotton, it may be a good idea to buy this one while it's available.
I will buy any and all Saturn games on my Switch, especially games like this that I always had my eye on but never got around to buying.
@NotoriousWhiz they're all in English. They are shoot em ups so it's all action and no text. Even the option menus are English on these 3 games.
More. Saturn. Games.
@Kochambra
Oh that's right, I think I knew about the strictly limited release, but forgot about it. Thanks very much! ✌
@X68000 Oh, I thought this was guardian heroes as well. The beat em up. Oh well.
@alpha5099 it's a terrible shooter and absolutely over hyped to the max. trust me, I paid a premium for the displeasure.
People getting excited for Guardian Force have clearly never played it, looks good, but is dull to play.
@YANDMAN Disagree. I own it for the Saturn, and it's not an all-star shmup, but it's one of my favorite of the Saturn's mid-tier shmups.
Love it. I love all 3 of these games and have them on the Saturn, and will absolutely buy them on the Switch. Agreed with @alpha5099 - Guardian Force is not one of the Saturn's masterpiece but it is a fun change of pace and I quite like teh soundtrack.
Cant wait !!!!!! im so happy!!!
@alpha5099 Yes i own it for the Saturn too and find it slow and laborious, weak weapons, low on excitement, all the things which i think make a good shooter are not present, but of course everything is subjective.
Day one for sure! Also, it was nice to see Strikers 2020 is making some progress.
I'll be getting this as soon as it's released on the Russian eshop.
@Ooyah EXACTLY!!! (I know this is old news, but I'm STILL HYPED!!! LOL)
City Connection - kings of input lag
Strictly Limited? Very small number of already limited copies? So the game isn't actually getting a physical release as the update states. There needs to be a new term or stated better when these scum limited companies come in and screw with things so we can be properly informed of actual physical releases, and not be disappointed with backhand clickbait.
Just my two pennies.
As someone who’s been waiting on their turrican collection to arrive for nearly a year and a half now, please don’t support Strictly limited games. They’re way too incompetent at what they’re doing to be fully trusted with these games..
@Surv I was wondering why nothing was mentioned here. This has been mentioned quite a bit on the shump-related subreddits.
@XenoShaun I've seen "retail release" and "limited release" bandied about in different parts of the internet. I think those are quite apt. Back on topic, though, I wouldn't get this game just yet; there is a lot of talk about input lag.
As much as this collection is pretty awesome, just be aware that the emulation is being done by City Connection, the same people behind the Psikyo ports, meaning that there's going to be controller lag in these games. What's worse is that it's been tested already and there's 11 frames of lag! That's worse than the 8 frames of lag that was in the Psikyo ports! https://youtu.be/cAFFzsIBsYY
Just to add my two cents.....
Having played all 3 of these titles I can confirm the lag is game breaking and renders them utterly useless. CC have mentioned that they are looking into the problem, but I wouldn’t expect them to improve and wouldn’t buy on the strength of a possible fix.
Same here! The lag is horrible! Steer clear!
Reading about the extreme input lag all over the Internet. I guess a pass on this one.
Heard that these ports had very noticeable input lags due to em running on a custom Sega Saturn emulator instead of the actual hardware, I'll wait until they patch that up first before buying this.
@Funneefox had the same issue with Root Double. Ordered last October. Cancelled this October due to impatience and endlessly pushed back release dates. Now I'm just gonna wait until the game releases or mut an InIn copy...
@farrgazer Yeah, anything will do really. The amount of times this place has said a game is getting a western physical release only to realise once clicked on the article it's a very limited release generally in America only unless you want to pay way over the top postage.. it's a real downer.
Also heard about the input issues. Hopefully they can resolve it from their current investigations. These type of games really need precise controls.
@XenoShaun At this point, the term "physical release" is such a catch-all term that you might as well consider it clickbait at worst. Limited or retail, it's factual, but general retail releases are far more preferable than limited releases.
Regarding limited releases, I've pretty much made my peace with them and decided on a plan of action. If I'm interested in a title, AND if orders are opened at a time that doesn't interfere with my working hours, I will give it a shot. If I manage to buy, great. If not, that game is considered gone to me, or maybe I'll wait for a sale. I have a massive backlog as is, and I'm sure other great games are in the pipeline all over the world. No need to waste emotional energy on this anymore.
@Brommel yes, was very excited by these releases but will be passing. I read the input lag was not just noticeable, but laughably severe.
Hope people are aware of the atrocious lag in this release... super sad man... probably won't see another official release in 10+ years or something stupid like that.
Would be happy if it wasn't so badly ported/emulated. So much lag according to all reviews. Putting money toward esprade instead.
@Funneefox Nailed it!! I had pre ordered 3 games last year and 1 year later just canceled them, waiting over a year is unacceptable for ANY company and until Strictly Limited get themselves in order, I will never order from them again. Limited Run here in the US is slightly better but not by much, ther are a handful of other companies with "limited edition" games that generally get them to you in a month or two if that just do some research, and you can get most of the games in English for that matter from Play-Asia right now, unless you absolutely must have that sticker set or mug stay far away from Strictly Limited.
