While plenty are enjoying Monster Hunter Rise and can look forward to the upcoming drop of new content, there's also good reason to be excited about Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, the sequel to the rather lovely 3DS title. Naturally it featured in today's Monster Hunter Digital Event, and some new details were given.
The key focus was on the battle mechanics, which have been expanded upon since the original game. Elemental attacks will be key, and you choose between POWER / SPEED / TECHNICAL attacks in a rock / paper / scissors approach.
You'll be able to get more strategic and attack specific monster parts, and if you and your monster choose the same attack type it'll prompt a powerful Double Attack. Battle Buddies can also join you, meaning you can have up to four units on your side in a turn-based battle. Finally, you can charge your Kinship Gauge to trigger even more powerful moves.
The presentation also confirmed that Lilia and Reverto, from the first game, will re-appear in this game. The new trailer is well worth a watch as it teases some interesting story beats.
We think this is looking rather good, but let us know what you think in the comments!

I can't wait to be totally unable to get the amiibo for this game as well just like the ones from Rise.
Game looks good though.
Yes this looks really good! Excited.....when’s the collectors edition going on sale?
Doesn't seem like there are many changes to the battle system. It's mostly more characters to control and other fluff.
But I like how many monsters previously not seen in Stories appeared in the trailer. Gammoth and Duramboros should be fun Monsties to ride. Plus the best weapon, Gunlance, is usable.
Still don't like the battle system. But the rest of the game looks gorgeous.
I'm of the odd subset of people who have no interest in Monster Hunter Rise but are very excited for MH Stories 2. Rise is beautiful and I want to like it, but the gameplay isn't for me. Stories 2 is even more beautiful and I don't mind turn-based battles.
As I mentioned on the forums I was up to now on the fence on this game but today presentation definitely sold me on the game. Not only the artstyle is beautiful (more than rise imho) but the gameplay looks to be more engaging than I was expecting.
I will still wait for reviews as I don't totally trust Capcom not to screw the main game in order to sell DLC after though
@Ralizah On the website they say they made the enemy patterns easier to spot.
@VoidofLight They said something to that effect in the presentation as well. Hopefully that reduces the 'trial and error' feel of the combat.
It sounds like there aren't any significant changes and I'm fine with that. I loved the combat of the first one.
This looks so great, I'd kill for a port of the first game. Heck, 90% of the work is already done for the mobile port.
@kennykenny same, tried MHW and while it was ok I got bored of it really fast. But I really like JRPGs and the visuals, music etc of this game are very nice and the story looks promising therefore I'm really looking forward to it
@mariomaster96: I never played the first game, so I'm going to try playing it on my iPhone (on sale now for $4.99).
It looks incredible. I still can't believe we're getting this sequel. Muah!
Taking off work tomorrow for the MH Rise 2.0 update. I'm gonna run out of vacation days at this rate!
I enjoyed the first game, though the combat system could've used some work. I'm glad they're making some tweaks, but I hope they nixed the randomly triggered button masher events in this one.
The battle system never bothered me, though some boss monsters seemed to have an unpredictable pattern which annoyed me at times.
So excited for this. Think this could be a new favourite game series.
They talked English in trailer finally, not a Simlish language like on MonHun Stories 1 3DS. 😆
If it's still rock/paper/scissors, then the combat system hasn't changed. That's the only thing I disliked in the original game. I can play rock/paper/scissors with my hand - no need for a videogame version. There's a reason everyone points it out as the worst aspect in Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
@samuraicop @Balta666
Sounds to me like neither of you played the first game, which was really special. Very good game with oodles of charm, no need at all to be worried.
@TheWingedAvenger
Note one of the best srpg series of all time use a rock/paper/scissors system. It doesn't mean its bad or super basic which is what you are claiming with this line "I can play rock/paper/scissors with my hand - no need for a videogame version."
@Rosona indeed I have not. Kind of hard do go back to 3ds screen for a 3d game after playing on switch
@Rosona
Which SRPG series are you referring to?
@TheWingedAvenger
Fire Emblem
@Rosona
The combat in Fire Emblem isn't rock/paper/scissors, because you know beforehand what your enemy has. When you play rock/paper/scissors, you don't have any foreknowledge of which of the three your opponent is going to show.
In other words, rock/paper/scissors (as in Monster Hunter Stories) is a mindless game of chance, whereas Fire Emblem requires that you use your brain to win.
