WayForward has revealed the original Shantae for Game Boy Color will be released on Switch eShop on 22nd April.
Along with an announcement on social media, it's also released a trailer showing off the original game in action on Nintendo's hybrid hardware. Notably, this version of the game will also include the standard GBC mode and the enhanced Game Boy Advance mode.
"The original Shantae is (almost) back! Experience Shantae's original GBC adventure in all its hair-whipping, belly-dancing, shape-shifting glory when it lands in the Nintendo Switch eShop on April 22!"
Physical editions for Switch and also the Game Boy Color were offered by Limited Run Games last year, and have now sold out. According to WayForword, the standard version is close to shipping.
Will you be revisiting Shante's original outing when it lands on the Switch later this month? Tell us below.

Wasn't expecting this, but it's nice to have the whole series on Switch!
I remember legit liking this game a lot. I first played it when only this one and its DSiWare sequel were around, and I remember thinking that it was like Simon's Quest, but actually good instead of bleh. I'm happy Shantae has grown into such a fine series, and this one is worth checking out, as the one that started the whole thing!
I had no idea there was a GBA mode. I’m in the middle of it through the 3DS Virtual Console. Should really finish it.
i love wayforward but this was probably delayed to meet up with when the physical copies from lrg got shipped out which is scummy
Playing this on 3DS is what made me get into the series. Probably won’t double dip for this on Switch though.
wait it was already on the Switch? Why hasn't it been on the eShop until now?
Already got it for 3DS and GBA so I'll probably pass on this for now.
I am interested in this series a bit. BUT DON’T YOU DARE SPOIL ANYTHING.
Haven’t played any of the games but I might give Risky’s revenge a try and maybe buy half genie.
Which one should I start since I am a new to these games
@ALinkttPresent I have no idea
@anoyonmus Risky Boots kills Bolo
Should've remade it instead of porting it.
I played it on the 3ds so no need to get this, but for those who haven't cheers.
Seems odd to dump a barebones emulation on a Switch cartridge. It really should have been an all-in-one cartridge alongside Risky's Revenge rather than two separate LRG releases (and limited editions to boot!).
Mind you, I'm still waiting for my copies (standards for me), so perhaps I am part of the problem.
And I love GB games so much that I'd buy just about any ludicrously priced physical Switch release to get them.
Though I did pass on Super Rare's Toki Tori release, which also included the GBC game on the cart. I had already bought it on 3DS and wasn't crazy about it.
Funnily enough, one of the key factors to swing my decision to buy The Lion King / Aladdin ports on Switch was the addition of the GB ports (the likes of which are almost never seen in these types of retro compilations). It's a shame though that the GBC remakes weren't included, and that instead of including the Super Game Boy versions of the originals (and their respective borders) they included (newly?) colourised versions that are just hideous.
@Aerona that doesn’t really answer my question
I'm mad that the physical copy of shantae cursed pirate is crazy crazy expensive like wtf.....can lrg do another run or something please lol.
I have it on 3DS, but still haven’t played it. Unless it is cheap, I probably won’t get it for Switch.
This is probably my favorite in the series, felt best in this most simple form.
@anoyonmus the series does have an ongoing story throughout, here’s the list in order and the original nintendo system they were released on. All available on switch once this one comes out.
Shantae - Game Boy Color
Risky’s Revenge - DSIware
Pirate’s Curse - 3DS
Half Genie Hero - WiiU
Seven Sirens - Switch
They all have great gameplay and fantastic soundtracks
Looks like they gave up waiting for GBC games to come to NSO (and so did we).
I was hoping they delayed this to announce along with a Shanate Smash reveal. Still hoping! Anyway this game is awesome! I may double dip...
Waiting for my Limited Run physical release to be delivered which should be shipping out soon. Along with Shantae Risky's Revenge and Doom 64 for Switch and PS4.
@adh56 hmm. Should I play in order or do riskys revenge and half genie
Great news! I'm a huge fan of the series, and even though I already have it on 3DS, I'll probably get it on the Switch as well.
Now, WayForward, how about a port of Wendy Every Witch Way?
Shantae's extremely short attack range makes this game very frustrating, especially since most enemies take multiple hits and barely get stunned if at all.
@Silly_G
I feel ya, they really should have been on one cartridge but WF and LRG knows they can milk idiots like us when it comes to this franchise:

Well, I would have liked a physical collection of the first 3 games, and not limited, but if they come to the eShop I'll definitely wait for a price drop. After all, the first is much cheaper on 3DS Virtual Console and I have all three digitally purchased in one console or the other, so no rush.
It's a nice touch that the first Shantae comes with the enhanced GBA version too, though, because it's not like any of us can try what happens when you put one of the superexpensive copies of the original in the GBA slot. So the inaugural entry I'll definitely buy at some point, and it's a great game that I loved when I played it a couple years ago.
Yes! Finally. Been waiting do long for this one!!! Now my Shantar collection will be complete!!!
@adh56 @anonymous Yes, there's an ongoing plot and at least the first three games were directly connected. So for once the timeline is just as the games were released. No prequels involved.
By the way, Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse are on Wii U too, but they'll come to the Switch sooner or later, because LRG made physical copies of all three (first one included) and they just started to release them digitally for the common folk.
@adh56 thanks, I was hoping someone would weigh in with an answer for @autonymous as I've been considering adding these to my haul if shame
The first game is kind of rough.
Cool beans. Now go ahead and announce her for SSBU...😀
April 22nd, the perfect time to reveal the next Smash Bros DLC character. I think Shantae has earned a spot.
Brilliant news, have it on 3DS virtual console but I'd love this on Switch.
Awesome to see. I got the physical copy ordered from Limited Run Games but still great to see.
This made me wonder if they kept the debug mode cheat code intact for this release. You could do it in the 3DS version, which is a modified ROM that removes the Capcom publisher splash screen.
Double dipping on this game. Pre ordered a game boy color cart from LRG and I'll get it on the switch as well. Love the series
I would love to see more gameboy (advance) games on switch one day. Could shantae be the start?
I think I'll double dip as well. Quality series.
Unlike other folks here, I will be double-dipping on and restarting the game, although I'm not sure how far I am on 3DS (just met Rottytops). Switch is a pure Shantae machine now, what a time to be alive. And once I'm through with this game and Risky's Revenge (obtained during the holidays earlier), it'll be time to finally double-dip on Pirate's Curse and gradually venture further with this amazing franchise.
The screen crunch on this game is a deal-breaker to me. I only play the sequels, which let you see what's around Shantae instead of just Shantae herself. The GBC game needs a remake, not a re-release. Metroid 2 on GB also had terrible screen crunch, which made it a prime candidate for a remake. And that remake turned a bad game into a great game.
@tonyp1987 I remember passing on them after the Limited Run listing for each mentioned they were in talks with Best Buy for doing a release of these games. Having a discount with Best Buy I was hopeful. After the Limited Run release nothing happened with Best Buy. Still bummed but I suppose it's my fault. Glad I was able to grab a physical copy of River City Girls (also a WayForward game) from Best Buy.
I'll be grabbing this to complete my digital collection. I do have the Shantae Half Geni Hero Ultimate edition and Seven Sirens on Switch physically. From Best Buy and PlayAsia respectively.
@Nico07 is it me or some of the switch games are more than the retro games like gamecube and ps2 games like shantae cursed pirate can grab $250+ like it's still current like why do scalpers do this to use game collectors or just want to play the game physically
@anoyonmus risks is beforehslf genie so if don't in that order
@Nico07 best buy will not receive theirs until a couple months after the initial release. They will still most likely be getting them.
@Dirty0814 If so I'll be picking them up for sure.
I'm very fortunate to have acquired all the games physically for the Nintendo Switch. They're fantastic and a lot of fun to play.
So grabbing this, hell yes.
@anoyonmus I’d recommend in order. While the games improve in quality with every entry, it’s a story heavy game and if you start with the later ones you won’t even know who any of the characters are or their relationships.
@ShadJV hmm ok.
@anoyonmus For me, Pirates Curse is by far the best game in the series. Id recommend playing that first.
Those Games are also on Gog and you can get them for 5-10 Bucks per Game in a Sale.
For everybody that wants their Game DRM free.
If you can't get a physical Copy, get one you can save as you wish.
@OorWullie I will see.
Risky revenge is cheap. I can play that.
Then pirates curse and half genie.
Or I should get half genie first then pirates curse
Just got the email from LR 👍👍
seriously... Shantae for Smash (or even Blade Strangers)!!!
Oh please yes... very much yes, please!!!
I really enjoyed the bit of this game that I played on an emulator, so I'm looking forward to playing it legally on an actual Nintendo handheld. ^^
@tonyp1987 limited run never, to my knowledge, does second runs. Closest they ever come is releasing for a platform they had not released for before.
I don't think the issue here are scalpers. Limited Runs are not that limited anymore, at least not the Switch ones. They have a preorder window, and so long you order within that window, they will manufacture your copy.
The problem comes when some title gets very little demand, so few preorders, and then something down the line (like a sequel) pushes demand up. Suddenly the price of that LRG release goes sky high.
Right now, if you want a physical copy, your best hope is that the game dev themselves make a deal with another publisher to make more physical releases. LRG does not make exclusive deals, so the game maker is free to make a followup edition in any way they want.
So, best bet is to try contact WayForward and see if they would be willing to make a SpecialReserve Games release, or maybe a release for another region that can simply be imported. Then cross your fingers that enogh people asked for the same.
@Tharsman I have and they said they won't do another physical for that game.
I'm definitely triple dipping on this. Already have the GBC and 3DS versions. Been a huge fan of the series since the beginning.
Did the GBA enhancement just make her skin lighter? 😯
I’m one of the few people that owned the GameBoy color version. I might pick this one up if the Saga game that I get sucks. I’ll be in a drought. I already beat Bravery Default two. So I’ll be onto a metroidvania game. Regardless, this one’s going on my wish list. If you haven’t played it, it’s great. Get this game.
