Re: Nintendo Switch OLED Model Vs. Standard Switch / Switch Lite: Full Tech Specs Comparison

TheRedComet

@T0mizawa

Spot on post.

For my phone, I love OLED. OLED works with phones because burn in isn’t an issue since the screen is constantly off and on.

For a gaming device that has static images like HUDs, give me LCD any day of the week. Same goes for my TVs.

They both have their use cases. But I never got the whole “we have to put OLED screens on everything” movement considering how easy it is to suffer burn in.

@Teksetter

Buddy you missed out big.

The Game Boy Advance is easily the most hours I ever sunk into any system. Mainly because it went with me everywhere. Trips, to school, everywhere. I didn’t stop playing it until I got my DS Lite in 2007 and even then I mostly played GBA games on it.

Best handheld of all time in my opinion. The SP model was perfect. It was the perfect size to pocket everywhere and and it was durable, unlike modern handhelds. I didn’t even take a case with me most of the time. I picked my “game of the day” I wanted to play and when I had free time, I popped it out and played until I needed to go do something else.

Re: Best Sonic Games Of All Time

TheRedComet

For me it’s easy.

1. Sonic 3 and Knuckles
2. Sonic Mania
3. Sonic 1
4. Sonic 2
5. Sonic CD
6. Sonic Advance

I don’t really care for any other Sonics. I liked A1 and A2 as a kid but I tried playing them again on 360 and woah they had a lot of problems.

Re: Video: The 21 Best NES Games Of All Time, As Rated By The Nintendo Life Community

TheRedComet

I love the NES, but truth is that most of the games haven’t aged well.

It was primitive hardware, and developers had extreme limitations they had to deal with.

I think the biggest flaw was that for most of its life, most developers approached game development from an “arcade” mindset. In the arcade, players are encouraged to spend just one more quarter to see the end of the game or get the high score. That wasn’t possible on the NES, and developers didn’t want their arcade styled games to be beaten quickly, so they put in bullcrap like limited continues and very limited pools of lives. It also served to beat the rental market.

So most NES games are stupidly hard, but not in a fun compelling way. I love arcade games, but I like the stupid challenge because I can always just put in more quarters and keep going. NES games typically gave three to four lives with one continue. In games that were just as stupidly hard as arcade games.

What I loved about the SNES and Genesis was that developers started to move away from that mindset. They developed hard games that were fair. Unlimited continues, easy pools of lives. It started in the latter half of the NES’s lifespan, but it really hit its stride about 1/4 of the way into the 16 bit era.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp Will Include Online Support

TheRedComet

I never owned 1&2 so I’m stoked for this.

I hope they include an “email” type mode. That’s perfect for these turn based strategy games. You make your move and then can go play something else. Come back to the game later and your opponent has made their move.

They could even integrate notifications onto both the Switch and the Online app on iOS android. That way you’ll know when your opponent has made their move.

Re: Yes, The Samus Returns Team Helped Nintendo Develop Metroid Dread

TheRedComet

@BloodNinja

I love Fusion and Zero Mission for basically opposite reasons.

Zero Mission is a great true successor to the original Metroid and Super Metroid in terms of gameplay evolution and it’s exploration. But it’s way too easy unless you make the game artificially harder by doing low percentage runs.

I find Fusion to be the realization of what Metroid 2 on game boy was trying to accomplish. A more linear game focused on narrative elements. But I really love it because it feels like has the most balanced difficulty of the entire 2D Metroid franchise. The game is challenging, but it’s a fair challenge throughout. And low percentage runs are a complete blast because of how good the bosses are.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Hardware Refreshes Through The Ages

TheRedComet

The Game Boy Advance SP for me. I got a GBA at launch but the SP was such a huge improvement. The backlight made that big of a difference. Plus, the clamshell meant I wasn’t afraid to put it in my pocket.

I need to find an SP-101 and get an everdrive cart for it. I don’t take my switch many places because of how fragile they are. But the SP-101 was a tank.

I prefer nvidia, but there’s a reason the console builders use AMD.

Better economy of scale, the ability to easily package the CPU and GPU together in an APU for mass production, AMD is a much larger company with better chip fabrication capabilities to meet demand (although they are failing to meet demand right now), and AMD cuts better deals than nVidia for bulk. There’s a reason both Sony and Microsoft used nVidia for one generation each and then told them to screw off.

Nintendo was wise to go with nVidia, though. AMD doesn’t offer an APU package optimized for tablet class devices that’s any good. But I don’t blame MS and Sony for sticking with AMD. It made perfect sense for what they were trying to do with their platforms.

TheRedComet

@Giygas_95

It’s a 50/50 shot.

The Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection release didn’t include 3&Knuckles. It had them separately.

3&Knuckles is my favorite Sonic game, so I’m hoping it’s presented as it was meant to be. Together as one game.

I’m a little worried that the music issues weren’t mentioned. I swear to God if they use the PC Knuckles collection music for Launch Base I’m going to blow a head gasket.

Re: Feature: Every Dragon Quest Game Ranked

TheRedComet

@PBandSmelly

It’s had a similar development to dragon ball.

I love Toriyama, but I think we can all admit that the guy has a fairly slim list of designs that he used for Dragon Ball, Chrono Trigger, and Dragon Quest.

The Luminary of DQXI was literally Trunks with brown hair and a different skin tone. And Crono was just Goku with red hair and a bandana.

But eh, I’m fine with it because I love his art style.

Re: Switch Hardware Sales Beat Xbox Series X|S And PS5 Combined, Unsurprisingly

TheRedComet

@MontyCircus

I want to play Sonic 3 and Knuckles on something modern.

If I want to play it without using my laptop, I have to drag my GameCube and it’s copy of Mega Collection out of storage.

It’s ridiculous that Sega can’t settle the music licensing disputes with the Jackson estate and Brad Buxor. They need to get that settled so we can get a Taxman rerelease like Sonic 1 and 2 got.

@electrolite77

Load times are dramatically improved on native games. BC see less of a jump, but it’s still substantial on some titles.

System menu is super fast. The PS4 interface got bloated over time and it got really slow on my Phat PS4.

The controller is extremely comfortable and feels much more premium than the Dualshock 4. It’s more comfortable for long play sessions.

Consistent implementations of 60 FPS on PS5 native and some BC titles is a godsend for me (I haven’t tried 120fps, my TV doesn’t support a refresh rate that high) since I always prefer 60 FPS when possible, even if it sacrifices resolution.

It’s dramatically quieter. It’s almost silent. Mine has slight coil whine when playing AAA games but it’s still orders of magnitude quieter than my Phat PS4 was or my friends Pro, both of which sounded like jet turbines. The only time I hear it is when it’s spinning a disc or if I mute my sound system completely and stand close to it. I can barely hear the fan and the coil whine is so minute that I don’t even worry about it.

There are a few things I don’t like about it. Firstly the size. The pictures really don’t do the thing justice. It’s enormous. Secondly, the PSN store is a mess. But it’s always been a mess so I’m not really blaming the PS5 specifically, but more so blaming Sony’s PSN design team.

Re: Rumour: Get That Salt Ready, Apple Is Reportedly Working On A Nintendo Switch-Style Hybrid Console

TheRedComet

@andrewclear

Apple’s pricing now is pretty good. Their phones are no more expensive than other flagship androids and considering the performance of the M1 Macs, they are an absolute steal at their base prices.

But the main issue with Apple entering gaming isn’t price. It’s that they know nothing about the gaming industry. And sometimes you can’t just throw money at a problem.

Re: Soapbox: Hurry Up And Release The Switch Pro Already, My Switch Is Dying

TheRedComet

I’ve had my V2 model since December of 2019.

No hardware issues, no drift with joycon.

That said, my usage case is 99% docked play with a Pro Controller. I can count on two hands how many times I’ve actually played it in handheld mode.

I don’t even keep a screen protected on it. I have the Zelda brown leather case for when I do actually take it places. And even then, the only place I’ll play handheld is in my car. I’m not risking dropping it.

IMO, the regular switch isn’t a good handheld console. It can do it, but it’s far too wide and the joycons are cramped beyond belief. I can play it for twenty minutes top before my wrists start to hurt. That said, it’s fine when I’m sitting in my car and that’s only when I know I’m going to have to wait on somebody and I’ve got twenty minutes to spare.

My old DS Lite was a proper handheld, and it never left my side. It went with me everywhere.

Re: Sega Wants To Know How It Can 'Enhance Your Gaming Experiences'

TheRedComet

1. Saturn and Dreamcast minis. For my mini collection.
2. Saturn and Dreamcast collections for PS5 and Switch. Both consoles can emulate the hell out of those machines.
3. A new, big budget single player Phantasy Star game. Actually I would be ok with a ground to sky remake of Phantasy Star II. It’s by far the hardest to go back to (it’s still a great story but the gameplay has aged horribly). And I mean with the production values of Final Fantasy VII remake. Expand the story; a lot of it was cut after it moved from the Master System to the Genesis halfway through development.

Re: Xbox's Phil Spencer: 'I Could Have Never Designed The Wii... It Was Just Amazing To See'

TheRedComet

@Anti-Matter

I had both in their heyday and while I preferred the N64 at first, I ended that generation being a PS1 fan.

But I think the N64 community was much more close knit than the PS1 community. Mainly because the N64 lacked a regular release schedule and had 1/3 the games the PS1 had.

There’s a YouTuber who explained in perfectly. If you get 5 N64 owners together, guys and gals who played it in its hey day and told them to name a few games they loved, it’s almost a given that there will be a lot of overlap. Everyone played Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, and Star Fox 64.

On the PS1 side, you’ll probably a bunch of totally unrelated answers with very little overlap.

The PS1 did much better at catering to distinct niches. And it’s library was absolutely massive.

My PS1 library was nothing like my childhood’s best friend’s library. I played RPGs; 90% of my PS1 collection consists of JRPGs. His was full of 90% sports titles. There wasn’t a lot of overlap between us.

But our N64 collections were almost identical. The only game that both of us didn’t own was Rogue Squadron. I had it and loved it and he hated it.
