Re: 'Missions And Rewards' Added To Nintendo Switch Online

Sunsy

When I said "Oh, I also grabbed the Peach icon and it broke the icon in the friends menu, so I had to go back to using my old Peach icon."

I see what I did wrong here, I checked the Switch's icon settings after changing my icon thinking it would show up there too. Had no idea it's only managed in the Switch online app.

@Stocksy You're welcome, it was fairly quick. Plus, you don't need to dedicate yourself to a full online session, just a quick game of Mario Kart is good enough.

While I did get the new Peach icon, I plan to save my points for Flipnote Studio 3D, just to grab it from My Nintendo before the 3DS eShop closes (I grabbed the Zelda Picross the other night).

Re: 'Missions And Rewards' Added To Nintendo Switch Online

Sunsy

@Stocksy Similarly, I played some Super Mario Bros., did a save cloud backup of the NES stuff, no points. Then when I did one online race of Mario Kart to complete the third mission to play online, a message popped up saying "you can earn reward points," where friend status usually pops up while playing.

As the article mentioned, it did take some time, it wasn't instant.

Re: 'Missions And Rewards' Added To Nintendo Switch Online

Sunsy

Wait, I can earn platinum points with this? Flipnote Studio 3D, here I come!

I may or may not be using this to get a 3DS game before I can't get it anymore, shhh, don't tell Nintendo.

Oh, I also grabbed the Peach icon and it broke the icon in the friends menu, so I had to go back to using my old Peach icon.

Re: Soapbox: Why Can't Nintendo Offer Both Virtual Console And Switch Online?

Sunsy

Honestly, reading this, I wish they did both. As Nintendo fan and a PC gamer, I don't like Nintendo Switch Online. I'm sorry, why should I pay to play games I already paid for online, especially when the previous Nintendo consoles had free online play? With that said, I wouldn't mind NSO if it was only a subscription service for classic games, honestly, I like the SNES service. I can play Super Mario All-Stars and found some new favorites.

However, I like to buy the games I like just to keep them. I look at subscription services Netflix, Hulu, and Peacock, as I have those. I watch movies and shows on them regularly, however I can still buy movies I like on DVD/Blu-Ray. Good example, I love Trolls World Tour, I can watch on Peacock, but I still bought the DVD/Blu-Ray. Did this make me cancel Peacock? No it did not, but I have the option to watch my favorite movie if Peacock were to ever go away, or if I needed to cancel.

Similar to games, if I like a game, I want to be able to always play it, even if it means buying it. There are SNES games I haven't played before on NSO I like, and it saddens me once NSO goes offline, I lose access to them forever. Nintendo should see people who want to buy classic games as extra revenue. I know people will disagree with me, but I don't mind buying a game I like again if it means having it on modern hardware.

Personally, I still found no value out of the Expansion Pack. Do I really want to pay $50/year to play Star Fox 64, or classic Sonic, when I have many other ways of playing them, officially nonetheless? I have Sonic 1 (albeit it's not on NSO Expansion) on almost everything, and Star Fox 64 on Wii U, Wii, and 3DS.

Re: Feature: 29 Best 3DS eShop Games You Should Get Before They're Gone Forever

Sunsy

Going to put this out there for a recommendation, Tank Troopers. The list missed this one, but this is an eShop only game. Best way I could describe it, a very Nintendo-y (for lack of a better word) take on a tank game. Similar to how Splatoon is a very Nintendo-y take on a shooter game.

It came out during that weird time between the Wii U and Switch, so I'm guessing it flew under the radar for many.

Very tempted to grab Pushmo now, or put it on my wishlist. I did enjoy Rusty's Real Deal Baseball despite not being into sports.

Edit: I got Pushmo confused with Stretchmo, so grabbed the latter being a F2P game, along with Steel Diver Sub Wars.

Re: Random: "I'm Able To Trust Sony More Than Nintendo" - Japan Reacts To The Closure Of The Wii U And 3DS eShops

Sunsy

@dres Indeed. Again, my apologies. Mostly this was from the last time I tried accessing the DSi shop. Last time I logged in, it didn't even connect. Today it did.

Makes me wonder, if they're still up for re-download, then why shut down said stores? Clearly the server is still hosting the games for download if that's the case. I can only guess the store ran on the same server, unless there's more behind the scenes stuff.

I still stand by the the idea to backup digital purchases via system settings. Even if it's just Wii U virtual console games on system memory, they could easily fit those onto a cheap USB stick, and be kept them in a safe spot.

Re: Random: "I'm Able To Trust Sony More Than Nintendo" - Japan Reacts To The Closure Of The Wii U And 3DS eShops

Sunsy

@hypercoyote @dres Then, my apologies. I didn't even know the Wii and DSi shops were still up for re-download. Actually, looking at the DSi shop now, so I will edit that out of my comment.

Still, it's a good idea to still backup digital purchases using system file management functions, just to be safe.

Edit: I should point out the message in the DSi shop does say "for a limited time previous purchases can still be redownloaded," so keep in mind this option to re-download may not be forever. Personally, I didn't even know it was still up as shut down always means shut down in most cases.

Re: Random: "I'm Able To Trust Sony More Than Nintendo" - Japan Reacts To The Closure Of The Wii U And 3DS eShops

Sunsy

@StarPoint In terms of digital games. If you already have it downloaded, then you can still keep playing them. You won't be able to buy anymore games.

Sill it's important to try and make backups of digital games. With my Wii and DSi, I have all my downloads backed up to SD cards. This way I can copy them back to my Wii or DSi as needed. No special trickery, it's a function within the Wii and DSi menu.

Similar to Wii U, I backed up most of my games to USB sticks, ready to be copied back to system memory or my hard drive (I use a HDD for Wii U digital, USB sticks are just for storage).

This also makes me appreciate stuff like GOG more, where games have no DRM on them. Let me back up my game and install it without internet connection. This is why I like buying PC games here more than Steam personally (I don't hate Steam either, this is just a preference I have).

Re: Dreamcast Star 'Kao The Kangaroo' Is Making A Surprise Comeback On Switch

Sunsy

@Anti-Matter That's awesome. It was also in Trolls, the main character Poppy sung it at the beginning of the movie. The movie has a lot of cover songs, this was one of them.

Looking forward to this, may give that PC version of Kao a go. I've been curious about this series for a long time, and I missed out on the Dreamcast original.

Re: Super Bomberman R Online Gets New Character And Battle Map

Sunsy

I play this once in awhile. Grabbed the update on PC, going to grab it on Switch later. Because this is on other systems, I like it gives the concept that the 99 games have, a battle royale based on a classic games, on other systems too.

@Zarudepie If you mean NSO, you don't need an NSO supbscription to play it. It's one of those free-to-play games that can be played online for free.

Re: Ad-Riddled 'Unpacking' Clone Doing Big Business On Mobile Devices

Sunsy

I play a handful of mobile games, mostly officially licensed character themed ones. I remember playing and getting an ad for a Galaga rip-off, using Galaga's sound effects and jingle. Ironic part, this was within the official Bandai Namco Pac-Man app.

Glad this got resolved, I'm always stumbling across fake games on mobile storefronts. As I mention I play a few officially licensed character games, this happens frequently with popular and well known characters.

Re: Soapbox: In Defence Of Balan Wonderworld, 'The Worst Game Of 2021'

Sunsy

This was very, very refreshing to read. Personally, as someone who does own the Switch version, I actually like this game. My only real complaint is lack of a back button in menus, and dedicated jump button, as the article mentions it's part of the game's strategy to use costumes.

Because of that, I took it as a puzzle platformer where costumes helped you explore and reach different areas of the dreamworld-like levels. I really liked that. The story scenes even got me emotional at times.

Definitely not a bad game if I can get enjoyment out of it. I do feel it's over-hated. It's hard going places on the Internet, saying "I like this game," without people getting mad at you for it. Sad it's like that over something like enjoying a game. Games are no different than any other form of entertainment, it's all subjective from person to person.

I could go into lots of games I've enjoyed that critics and people hated, yet I loved playing them. There's a reason why I don't follow MetaCritic scores or reviews. Just let me play, and I'll come to my own conclusion on whether I like it or not.

Re: Video: Our Best Worst Switch Games - Part 1

Sunsy

Took a break from chores to watch this, I like seeing people appreciate games that get lower ratings. Though I do feel like I'm the only one who thinks just because a game gets a lower review score or rating, does not mean it's bad to everyone who plays it. I've played quite a few games that rated lowly, and I still loved them enough to call them good, or even great, or underrated. It's no different than having an opinion on a movie, a show, a book, music, it's all subjective.

For me, I did enjoy Balan Wonderworld, despite it not doing well critically. That's the only Switch game that comes to mind with me, I could get into other games I've played on other Nintendo systems and PCs that weren't well received, but thought they were great.

Though, I wouldn't consider No Straight Roads to be a poorly received game from the looks of it. It sounds like it was overlooked to me. Then again, I don't usually use MetaCritic or reviews, so I didn't know the reception.

Re: Balan Wonderworld Is Officially The Worst Switch Game Of 2021, According To Metacritic

Sunsy

@stuntz0rZ Simple answer, different reasons are why someone would want to buy a game. Maybe to see if it's really that bad. Some may have a genuine interest in the game, and want to play it, and who knows, maybe they'll like it enough to call it good, or maybe not.

Just because a game makes it to a worst ever list or scores low, does not mean it's going to be the "worst" to everyone. Some may disagree and find a game to be good or great, and that's ok.

At the end of the day, video games, like movies, books, TV shows, and music, are subjective. Some are going to like it, others won't.

Re: Random: Sonic 2's Trailer Gets An Anime Makeover

Sunsy

Really liking how they adapted the style from the Sonic OVA. I saw the OVA movie a very long time ago and have the VHS still (no longer have a VCR, so I just keep it as it's a special Sonic thing I have), so I'm familiar with the hat Knuckles is wearing.

Re: Online Multiplayer And DLC Are Coming To Cruis'n Blast

Sunsy

I just got this game, friend gave it to me for Christmas (we exchange a little before Christmas), and I love it. I was surprised there was no online play, but still a local wireless option. So this is great news to me since I do enjoy racing games online.

Re: Balan Wonderworld Is Officially The Worst Switch Game Of 2021, According To Metacritic

Sunsy

@Azuris I can't help but agree with the game being hyped up as Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima were behind it, so I wouldn't be surprised it got hyped up. Especially with the disappointment the game is a platformer that's slower paced. It's not trying to be a copy of Sonic or trying to be Sonic. Want Sonic? There's plenty of Sonic games to play.

I understand the one button scheme may have been to make it simple for kids, but always thought a jump button isn't too much. My nephew at a young age figure out jumping in a platformer. I'm not putting down simple control schemes at all. One or two actions is simpler than having an action for all four face buttons, and shoulder buttons, each doing something different.

At least that's my two cents on it, coming from someone who enjoys the game.

Re: Balan Wonderworld Is Officially The Worst Switch Game Of 2021, According To Metacritic

Sunsy

Played Balan Wonderworld, and I disagree with it being the worst. For what it was I did enjoy the game, like the world and puzzle solving. My only real complaint was lack of a dedicated jump button and no back button in the menu.

Honestly, I feel the game is over-hated if anything. What do I know, I just play games and form my opinions on those experiences. I don't follow MetaCritic or reviews personally.

In the past I avoided games because of reviews, and when I finally played them, I loved them. Hence why I choose to just play games myself, to see what I think and if I like them.

Re: Video: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Official Movie Trailer Released

Sunsy

@inenai From what I recall, they never showed it in game. In those days, stories to games were in the manuals, so I don't consider things that early in the game to be much of a spoiler, especially if you're one to peak into a manual for the story.

My brother had a Sega Genesis, so I remember looking in the manuals quite a bit when I was a kid.

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Official Movie Trailer Released

Sunsy

This looks so good! Really loving Sonic and Tails, as well as Knuckles in action, they look great.

@Anti-Matter Yup, Sonic 3. In the game's story, Dr. Eggman tricks Knuckles into going after Sonic. Towards the end, Knuckles realizes he was tricked and teams up with Sonic

Re: Feature: 10 Overlooked GameCube Gems You Must Play

Sunsy

@AlienX I have to agree with Sonic Riders, a really fun racer once you get the hang of how to use the air system properly. One of my favorite games. I was on the fence of mentioning this one since I love it, but it was also on Xbox, PS2, and PC, and thought they were sticking to exclusives.

Re: Feature: 10 Overlooked GameCube Gems You Must Play

Sunsy

Wow, P.N.03, now there's a game that I remember playing, and I still have it. It was a pretty cool shooter from what I remember, having to shoot when standing still, and doing some ballet-like moves gave it a different feel to it than most shooters.

Personal pick would go to Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, was a unique and fun platformer with a colorful world. Loved it.

Re: Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Calls For Industry-Wide Support Of Game Preservation Via Emulation

Sunsy

@Not_Soos Hope so. So far, it seems a different service per generation. It will be interesting how this carries over, whether the download is backwards compatible or they just make a new updated version for a new service.

Now thinking about it, games have been removed in the past because of licensing, it will be interesting to see how these could get preserved and emulated officially.

Re: Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Calls For Industry-Wide Support Of Game Preservation Via Emulation

Sunsy

I think it would be great to preserve games and have a way to legally emulate them. So far, I like how Sega did it with their classics collection, release officially emulated classics in a collection. Got to give credit where credit's due, Sega still manages to keep their classics out. There's a good reason why I can play Sonic 1 on just about anything officially.

I was playing Super Mario All-Stars on Switch Online this evening, and while I have the Wii version, it does sadden me that the Switch version could one day disappear when Switch Online is shut down. I think it would be nice to have a more permanent solution.

Re: Nintendo Download: 4th November (Europe)

Sunsy

I'm just going to say Smurfs: Mission Vileaf is a fun romp. I live in the US, but played the PC release that came out last week. I bought it as a Smurfs fan, but enjoyed it a lot more just for being a really good platformer.

I'll probably say this again when Nintendo Download features the US version, but yeah, I thought I'd put this out there being someone who played it already.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

Sunsy

@Anti-Matter Neat, I have a couple of other N64 games, and rebought a few I lost when moving on my Wii U (mainly Yoshi's Story and Super Mario 64, I use to have their carts).

My brother had the PlayStation in my family, and enjoyed them too.

Will say, I love how Sega keeps rereleasing classics in physical collections unlike Nintendo. Guess the old saying "Sega does what Nintendon't" still applies. I wish Nintendo would rerelease more classics in collections.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

Sunsy

Nope still not buying it. That $50 could be put towards a new game. Most of the time the only N64 game I revisit is Star Fox 64, and I have many ways to play Sega classics between the Sega Genesis Classics (which has online play too) and the Sonic collections.

$50 is a lot of money for some people, doing the math, it adds up over time as you keep subscribed. There is zero value for me in this. Also, when Switch Online is discontinued, you lose these games forever.

I rather buy one or two classics I love just to have access to them on newer hardware. Far cheaper than spending a large amount of money that adds up over time on a rental service where you don't keep the games you like.

I only pay the base $20/year service just to play online. I'm also a PC gamer, so you know I don't even like paying for it. I do it just to play online, especially with friends who don't play PC games.

@Anti-Matter Even as someone with Star Fox 64 on my Wii and Wii U, and the 3D remake, I still have my Star Fox 64 cart, and it still works to this day.

Re: Video: Learn More About Sonic The Hedgehog's 8-Bit History

Sunsy

I love GTV Japan, possibly one of the most underrated gaming YouTube channels I've seen. Will give this a watch later on TV via Switch's YouTube app. I enjoyed some of the 8-bit outings Sonic had, like Sonic Chaos and Sonic Blast (yes, I'm one of the few who like that game).

Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 13.1.0 Is Now Live - Adds The Switch Online Expansion Pack

Sunsy

@jtmnm I get Microsoft listened when they tried to double Xbox Live, this is Nintendo we're talking about. I love their games as much as the next person does, but they also don't listen either.

This is why it is very important to not buy something like this. Money talks. Remember when the 3DS launched with a high price and they lowered it, IIRC that was because it initially didn't sell well. They lost money and the price dropped.

If you want to make any impact, don't buy it. Sometimes this is the only way a company like Nintendo will listen.

Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 13.1.0 Is Now Live - Adds The Switch Online Expansion Pack

Sunsy

@VoidofLight I have no plans to buy it. The expansion pack doesn't feel worth it for me. I have about half the N64 games on Wii U, and I own way too many ways to play classic Genesis games. The Switch even has a Genesis collection, and it has online play.

I don't play N64 stuff often, when I do it's Star Fox 64, which I have on Wii, Wii U, and the 3D version on 3DS. I do play Sega stuff often, especially classic Sonic, but I have them on various Nintendo systems, my PC via Steam, and my phone.

Re: Random: VTuber Korone Plays Gyro-Enabled GBA Title WarioWare Twisted! With A GameCube

Sunsy

I'm surprised I missed this, and I'm a subscriber. If I'm being honest, I enjoy VTubers, discovered one of the Hololive ones late 2019, and the following year I just got into them. Amusing part is, I found out about them when Dawn of the Breakers was still online and did Hololive events, long before I ever watched a stream (I miss the game).

@Blooper987 You beat me to it, I was totally going to tag you about this article. You immediately came to mind.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?

Sunsy

Nope, not upgrading. Already paying the $20 plan to play with friends online who don't play PC games, and the handful of SNES and NES games I did enjoy (actually liked Magical Drop II, Psycho Dream, and Vice: Project Doom).

Sometimes, you got to look at it and think "wait, this is more than double," and decide based on that.

Also, I'm a PC gamer in addition to being a fan of Nintendo's games, so that alone can sum up how I feel about paid online.

Besides, I have the Genesis collection on Switch, and yeah that does have online play too. Also, the few N64 games I like are on my Wii U. Why am I going to pay $50 to play games I already have?

If I want the Animal Crossing DLC, I'll just buy it. I rather pay once than have to keep paying annually to play add-on content.

At least that's my thoughts on the subject.
