At The Game Awards, Sonic voice actor Ben Schwartz presented the first official trailer for the upcoming movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The film, due out on 8th April 2022, sees Schwatz once again joined by Jim Carrey (Robotnik), and the cast has been bolstered with Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckle.
"The world’s favourite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilisations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. From the filmmakers behind The Fast and the Furious and Deadpool, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Jim Carrey returning, alongside new additions Shemar Moore, with Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails."

Can wait for the Sonic movies and Mario movie be crossed into the same universe and it starts the "Nintendo Sega Cinematic Universe (NSCU)".
Knuckles looked like bad guy from the trailer.
Did Knuckles have some rivalry with Sonic in the games ?
So excited to see Idris Elba as Knuckle bolster the cast is Colleen O'Shaughnessey! And Ben Schwatz too!!!!!!!!
This looks so good! Really loving Sonic and Tails, as well as Knuckles in action, they look great.
@Anti-Matter Yup, Sonic 3. In the game's story, Dr. Eggman tricks Knuckles into going after Sonic. Towards the end, Knuckles realizes he was tricked and teams up with Sonic
@Anti-Matter He did originally in Sonic 3.
I got hyped when I saw Ice Cap Zone, complete with Sonic on the snowboard. I hope there’s more references to other levels as well!
@Anti-Matter Yes. In Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic Adventure 1 and Knuckles, pre-SA2 Sonic X, and some of the comics have Knuckles and Sonic having a rivalry.
I am hyped for Knuckles.
Can't wait to see Sonic and Knuckles duke it out at the streets of rage.
@Anti-Matter yep, as mentioned Knuckles has always had a rivalry with Sonic. One good way to describe them is Sonic is a hero but Knuckles is an antihero.
About the trailer: Something about this is like Sonic 2 and 3: The Movie. And I love it.
I haven't seen the first movie, despite owning it on DVD (no working DVD player for me right now), but I'll eventually as prep work for the second.
@HotGoomba Me and a friend of mine (coincidentally enough) had dreams that this happened.
Remember, Toho (Godzilla, Seven Samurai, Your Name., Weathering With You, My Hero Academia, Little Witch Academia) is involved in both the Mario and Sonic movies as well as the Monster Hunter movie.
We both dreamed that Toho partnered with video game companies and Hollywood studios in making a Super Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe.
I still need to watch the first movie. This does look promising!
That actually looked really freaking good!
I was on board as soon as I saw Knuckles kick Sonics ass
@PigmaskFan @HotGoomba @HammerGalladeBro @Sunsy
Ah, I see...
Never know about rivalry between Sonic and Knuckles.
@HammerGalladeBro Knuckles' isn't an anti-hero. That's more like Shadow and what not. Knuckles' is more of a red oni to Sonic's blue oni.
That was good, definitely will watch. Not a fan of Knuckles' voice yet.
Finally the original rivalry is back. Knuckles and Sonic always made better rivals than Sonic and extreme edge Sonic aka Shadow.
Sup my dudes, it is time for rejoice or something i forgor...
Seriously? Knuckles was introduced as an enemy of Sonic. Are you 12?
@Crag92 Uhhh mate...Sonic 3 came out in 1994. This may shock you, but not everyone grew up with the original sega games. Depending on the year most likely some fans grew up playing the 3d titles.
The first movie was really a fun flick to watch with my kids, so we’ll look forward to this sequel 👍🏼
@Fangleman32 I had A genesis and Sonic 1 when I was in middle school. I'm 40 now. I agree with you totally.
I don't think Knuckle's voice works very well. Maybe I'm too used to his video games VAs.
Anyway, remember the original Sonic Movie trailer with Gangster's Paradise? This one was much, much better then that.
@Teksetter I think it will be cool but there no sexy knuckles
I loved EVERYTHING about this trailer! I am so stoked.
Exclusive to theaters? I hate console exclusives.
@Anti-Matter Back in sonic 3.
He looks so good, Its amazing, I think i'm gonna cry.
I'm liking what I see. Too many humans from the first movie that were fluff to begin with but maybe their roles are reduced? Still psyched to see the Sonic and Knuckles confrontation along with more witty Sonic/Eggman banter
@Handy_Man Definitely geeked out from the Ice Cap Zone appearance. Would be sweet if they somehow worked the music into that sequence
There's references to Sonic 2 on Genesis as well. Sky Chase Zone with the plane battle, Emerald Hill Zone with Seattle (the nickname of which is the Emerald City), The Hornet drone shown briefly during the plane fight is the same design as what was seen in Emerald Hill Zone (though it has a different color scheme).
March?? I swear the first one just barely came out. Cool! Me and my fam are there! Loooong time knuckles fan over here.
This was totally worth me staying up til 4am watching the Game Awards for. Looks amazing! Loved the first one, and having Tails and Knuckles onboard I'm going to love this one even more! Looks like this time round they are more confident leanign into actual references to the classic games, that was my only gripe with the first one. Can't wait!
oh, it looks fun
That looked pretty cool! I watched the first for the first time last night, by coincidence, I’m a big Jim Carey fan and I enjoyed it.
Sounds a bit like Sonic 3. I'm looking forward to the Robotnik and Knuckles interactions.

@HotGoomba reminds me of that one line in the sonic boom cartoon....
"There is a certain princess in a castle I'd like to meet"

This looks awesome, seems a lot more videogamey and less product placing and road trippy than the first movie.
Just from this trailer it's ticking a bunch of boxes for me.
I just hope they put the Sonic 2 boss theme in it somewhere.

I can't wait to see this movie.
Great trailer. The first movie was decent, and this one is shaping up to be even better.
I played through the original Sonic trilogy for the first time about two years ago, so they're still pretty fresh in my mind. I appreciated the references, and I'm excited to see the final film. I may even see it at the cinema!
@Sunsy Did you just hide a spoiler from a game that came out in the 90's?
I'm not saying that's a good or a bad thing, it's a surprising thing
@inenai I sure did. I don't think Anti got around to playing Sonic 3, he's only tried a few Sonic games, so I hid the spoiler it since it was an epic part of the game, in event Anti ever wants to try Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Did it out of respect.
@Sunsy That's so considerate! Though with all the Sonic media that exists today and the current lore, it would be probably more useful to censor the part where Knuckles was tricked into antagonizing Sonic to begin with, lol.
This looks amazing. I cannot wait!
@inenai From what I recall, they never showed it in game. In those days, stories to games were in the manuals, so I don't consider things that early in the game to be much of a spoiler, especially if you're one to peak into a manual for the story.
My brother had a Sega Genesis, so I remember looking in the manuals quite a bit when I was a kid.
@Sunsy I loved reading the manuals before actually playing the games, I hyped over learning all the controls and lore before plunging in (especially N64 game manuals, those looked and still look gorgeous).
@HammerGalladeBro I know the bar isn’t exactly set high for video game films but Sonic is by far the best one I’ve ever seen. It’s not perfect, but it is solid and entertaining, so very much like the first Iron Man film. Sonic’s character is pleasant (a mixture of 90s ‘tide and childlike excitement; he comes across as endearing rather than annoying). Jim Carey is channeling his Ace Ventura days as Robotnik (and that’s a good thing; he’s hilarious in the role) and even Marsden’s long suffering sheriff is just dry enough that he works as a counterpoint to sonic (think Jon Arbuckle to Garfield in the comics). I took my then 6 year old son to see it in the cinema and he loved it and I was very amused (there are plenty of Easter eggs for long time Sonic fans). We have it on DVD and it has been revisiting more than once by both my kids, so that tells you something.
@Anti-Matter In Sonic 3 and Knuckles Eggman convinces him that sonic stole the Master emerald (which he is the gaurdian of).
Gotta say the trailer looks great and it feels that they learnt the lesson of stay true to the franchise.
yeah this will be the best video game adaptation of all time.
@inenai exactly! reading the manuals was and still is great. i would buy my games at like gamestop or disk replay and on the way home just read the manual.
@Sunsy sonic 3 is the best classic sonic game. can i get a amen?
