Isn't it nice when everyone gets along? In the spirit of things, the official Xbox Twitter account shared an image today in celebration of the OG Xbox's 20th birthday, which brings Nintendo, PlayStation, and even SEGA in on the fun.
"One of gaming's best eras" indeed.
The Dreamcast came out in 1998 in Japan, and 1999 in the rest of the world (except India, who would get it at the end of the year 2000), making it just about to turn 23 — the eldest of the gang.
The PS2 was next in early 2000, making it 21 this year (old enough to drink in the US, but please don't pour whisky into your consoles).
Then, of course, it was the GameCube's release in 2001 — we celebrated its 20th birthday in September this year!
Finally, the baby of the group, the original Xbox, came out this week in 2001. It was its birthday on Monday 15th November! Happy birthday, Xbox. Welcome to the club of consoles in their 20s. To celebrate the big 2-0, the Xbox team have been announcing all sorts of things — but you'll have to go to PureXbox.com for that!
PlayStation likewise offered their congratulations to their former rivals on their big day, but with a little more understatement. Still, it's sweet, no?
(Sadly, the Wii, which turns 15 on Friday, was not invited to the party.)
Was this truly one of gaming's best eras? Let us know in the comments!

Ok, as someone who loved playing GameCube and Dreamcast games, this is pretty cool. Also, my brother had an Xbox and I did play it. It's a good era, had a lot of fun with the games, plus Sonic appearing on non-Sega systems was a plus for me.
I don't know why but I'm imagining this as Vert celebrating and she also gives a shoutout to her friends Neptune, Noire and Blanc
It was actually worth owning all the consoles back then. What a time to be alive.
I like the background colour for the dreamcats picture. 💩
One of the best eras indeed, and I spent it playing poor quality movie tie-in game after poor quality movie tie-in game.
Man I was introduced to so many awesome series with this generation: Halo, Metroid, Zelda, F-ZERO, Kingdom Hearts, Tales... Good times.
Man the GameCube, Xbox, console nobody remembers, and the PS2 were all great.
Game Cube is already 20 year old? oh boy i feel old, Game Cube was a amazing console.
The...the Wii is FIFTEEN on Friday!!!? D':
lol even Xbox celebrates the anniversary and Nintendont
Nintendo are such ***holes, they never so much as acknowledge any other company outside of marketing purposes. I know they're all money-hungry faceless corporations solely interested in profit, but at least reciprocate the PR good faith practices.
Dreamcast and cube were underrated, both never reached there full potential. For me personally the 16bit era will always be the best 👌
The era which gave us 3D GTA, Devil May Cry, SSX Tricky, God of War, Wind Waker, Burnout, and Smash Melee to name but a few. Had a PS2 and a GameCube, and gaming was great! Oh yeah, and the last home console gen where games were released in a finished state! Remember those days, Rockstar?
@TheBigK
This PR is for marketing purposes as well.
Eternal Darkness. Beyond Good & Evil. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Yes. Truly a great era!
@LXP8 For some reason that doesn't shock me but the Wii U being 9 years old does. The Switch is almost 5,which is crazy to me.
Happy birthday, XBOX ! 😀
I have Gamecube, PS2 & XBOX games displayed on my shelf.
Early 2000's was the best video games era.
Oh boy it’s cool uncle Microsoft again letting us know how cool and friendly they are who totally aren’t creepy and underhanded.
@TheBigK
Microsoft is acknowledging Nintendo for marketing purposes.
Just the other day I was reminiscing about going over to my buddy’s house after school everyday to work on rogue squadron. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years!!
To me Microsoft looks desperate to win over fans of other consoles when they keep praising Nintendo and Sony.
Being a Nintendo kid while my friends all had Xbox's I experienced both systems! Had tons of fun with halo multiplayer.
@TheBigK Considering they barely acknowledge their own history most of the time they certainly don't have time to acknowledge any others.
@Yomogi Sounds pretty canon since Vert is also heavily into gaming and probably into social media lmao
@TheBigK "Nintendo are such ***holes, they never so much as acknowledge any other company outside of marketing purposes. I know they're all money-hungry faceless corporations solely interested in profit, but at least reciprocate the PR good faith practices"
I respect Nintendo more for not patronising us with this kind of PR nonsense for the gullible.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I'm inclined to agree, weird that people with different consoles coexisting is such a goldmine of positive PR.
I mean for sure they're posting this as part of Xbox's 20th anniversary celebrations, but they're not wrong or anything. It's also just kind of nice to see one of the big three actually acknowledge the existence of other consoles and games that aren't on their system every now and then, rather than pretend they don't exist.
Good times.
Last time we saw a Waverace, 1080 and F Zero game.
I think it's about time you revisit those franchises Nintendo.
Gamecube was definitely one of the greatest nintendo consoles. It still surprises me how a console with such a great selection of games sold so poorly.
Can't wait to find out the truth behind this.
That was the best generation. I still play PS2 on PC. Playing Wild Arms Alter Code F. I miss the older rpgs.
I like Xbox series x , forza and halo look great. I do not have one, but I will get one some day, switch is still my main system. But glad Microsoft is so professional, and can like Nintendo as well.
The Gamecube is a top tier console. Slap the GBA player on there too, gamers paradise.
That era was very toxic and few people liked the GCN, DC or Xbox when they were still relevant. Idk why people pretend it was something that it was not.
Console Fwends forever and ever, 👍Fwend👍
Yep, i think defenitve the best 3D Gaming Era.
Best 2D was Super Nintendo.
The current and last Gen are pretty boring.
GameCube was my reintroduction into games, it made me appreciate more genres.
Everyone I knew in middle school back then had a GC — Melee, Sunshine, Wind Waker, Sonic Heroes, Metroid Prime were some of the titles I would often hear people talking about.
I loved the console back then and I still do.
X & Y was top tier. Idc what people say.
Before that my fav was HeartGold/soulSilver.
If sun & moon didn't have Z moves it would be a better game but X&Y has had more impact on me than any other game and I'm what 28 and have been playing Pokemon for a long time.
Let’s not fool ourselves people, if Microsoft could obliterate Sony and Nintendo from the face of the earth they’d do it in a heartbeat!
@HotGoomba
im honestly curious how old you were in 1999. i know you are trolling, but respectfully, im wondering if you even know what you are talking about.
dreamcast was the only game in town, so to speak, for about a year. every interesting game, and the best version of any game released in 2000 was on dreamcast. the year or so leading up to its release, i was HYPED. probably more hyped than for any other console, though SNES, PSX, DC, and Wii are kind of in a four way tie, haha. the fact that i was 13 when it came out gives it the edge, though, i dont think i was ever more into games than at 13.
perhaps unsurprisingly, i will agree that that generation was probably the best. four distinct consoles, that all justified their existence. its a shame that DC didnt stick around, as it remained the best console for arcade ports (probably still is.)
Wow, these 20 years have gone by so fast. It feels like yesterday I was flipping through a Gamecube pamphlet I got at a toy store when the console was new. It had some information about the system, and also showed off a lot of the early game releases. I read that thing over and over, drooling at screenshots of Super Monkey Ball and the Spider-Man movie game.
While the era was very fun back then, it’s sadly one of the generations that has aged with least dignity. The only era that has aged worse is probably the 32/64-bit generation.
@IronMan30
what are you talking about? this era was great, how do you believe it was toxic? i was into DC and Gamecube, and so were all my friends. dreamcast sold epic (edit - i meant to say RECORD not epic. look it up) numbers on its US release date. EVERYBODY loved Melee.
you know who was toxic and relatively few people liked during his relevance? Bill Hicks. doesnt make him not great, does it?
im not trying to make you mad or anything, just challenging your assertion.
yup. in my opinion the best console generation ever. it kinda went downhill afterwards with online taking over
At the moment I am loving my Xbox one backwards compatibility. Played dead space earlier and chuffing hell timesplitters 2! Can Nintendo or PS4 offer that today? Also red dead redemption on Xbox one is a buttery smooth ride! Xxxxx
@-wc- this was the time when online communities were forming for consoles and people began trolling others online.
Yes, there were great games on all consoles, but the only one that sold very well was the PS2. Many people forget that, but MS did what they could to kill the og Xbox and Nintendo changed its strategy for its home consoles because of the general reception of the GCN. And we all know what happened to Sega after DC.
Don't get me wrong, I loved that generation of gaming but many people at the time were not very cool about what they did and didn't like. And it is completely okay to say that many people of a certain age range remember that generation much differently than it actually was.
Wouldn't it be funny if Microsoft got a GameCube, PS2, GBA, Dreamcast, and Xbox exclusive game like Gotcha Force, Star Ocean: Til the End of Time, Ninja Five-0, Power Stone, and Blue Dragon for the Xbox Series X and PC at the time of each console's anniversary?
@IronMan30
ill show my age a bit: i dont care for online communities and frankly i forget they exist. posting here is literally the only way i participate, and i only just started a few weeks ago.
i do however know that things can get real scummy out there, and that the "console wars" was still a thing at the time (seems like it still is for the xbox/ps5 ppl.) i will take your word for it.
HOWEVER i will also say that for the people who knew better, these consoles are beloved, and there are/were millions of us then and now. gamecube sold, what? 14 million? thats not "a few people." and, chasing money is rarely (or never) the way to quality art. artistically speaking, the 1st party n64/ gamecube library is picasso next to what they have put out since *with some exceptions. **in my opinion.
im truly sorry that other people had less than a good time with this era, that is a real shame.
@JohnnyC : Wii games are complete on disc too. Skyward Sword was the only example I recall of a retail game patched after the fact. There may have been one other that escapes me.
There was also a recall of the Australian release of Animal Crossing : Let’s Go To The City, but this was due to an oversight due to Nintendo Australia having released the US version of Wild World here (as was the norm for first-party DS releases) but the PAL edition of the Wii instalment, making communication between the two versions impossible.
I submitted my copy for a replacement, though those without the DS version or had no want for the feature would have been unaffected.
But I too absolutely miss the days when games were complete on disc/cartridge.
Too bad Nintendo isn’t releasing a Gamecube Classic Edition or a Gamecube Classic games collection (Similar to Sega Genesis collection game) to celebrate Gamecube’s 20th birthday.
Once upon a time, Xbox marketing was all about being "mature" and uploaded a flash cartoon where they had shallow parodies of Mario characters, and then a robot shows up and called them pansies, or something like that. Glad to see they've grown up.
Also, the Wii needs a quincenera.
One of the best eras? It was THE best era, IMO. But then the Wii happened. SMH.
Agreed. A phenomical generation number 5 was.
I have never own a Microsoft console, I thought this was the generation to change that
I mean Microsoft is that kid who used to give Nintendo swirlies and break their glasses "by accident" and now they want to be Facebook friends and reminisce about how much fun they had in high school together. But sure, it was a golden age all right, sure was.
So true, one of the best and most memorable generation of video games, with Sega giving its best, last ditch effort on the home console front. The Dreamcast actually outlasted it’s designated shelf life, as even after it’s discontinuation in 2001, Japan still had official game releases all the way till 2007.
I loved my Dreamcast so much! A huge Sega fan from the day I brought home a Master System, I was so crushed that Sega threw in the towel after DC. I thought DC would really bring Sega back to a competitive level with Sony but we all know how that went. I still wish Sega of today was the old Sega making amazing games one after the other!
I love how supportive Xbox is of everyone!
The best Xbox-Nintendo moment has to be when the Xbox people said you could buy a Wii and a 360 for the price of a PS3, and Reggie shut them down by saying it would be better to buy a Wii and a bunch of great games than one of his competitors' products. Good times lol.
@Euler Is that true?
@P-Man https://usatoday30.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2006-08-14-nintendo-qa_x.htm
@Harmonie
Wii is one of my Best Nintendo console. 👍
I like to play the casual games from Wii with new ideas in gaming.
Ahh.. Dreamcast. The most magical console. I remember the time I saw the first advertising for it, and I just had to own it right away.
People do not realize how fantastic it was with 128bit graphics in a home console back in 1998. It was so ahead of it's time.
A pity that so few people gave it a chance, because of ridiculous hype that was surrounding the PS2 and it's "Emotion Engine". It turned out to be nothing special compared to the Dreamcast.
@TheBigK
What exactly are you basing that on?
“Nintendo” almost never gives any interviews and when they do it’s almost exclusively with Japan media under a do not translate agreement. They credit Sony all the time, talk about their influences from Sony games, and generally support the idea that “gamers” need to own both consoles. The ONLY time Nintendo has really gone on the offences with a “the other guys suck” message was the PSP. They TRASHED that thing. They don’t talk about Xbox because Japan doesn’t know what an Xbox is.
So unless you speak Japanese or hunt down rouge translations before they get taken down, you’ve almost never heard anything “Nintendo” has to say.
You’re talking about Nintendo of America, forgetting that’s not Nintendo but a tiny entity they have for marketing and distribution and they are rarely authorised to speak to media outside of press releases scripted at head office.
Ah yes the four horsemen of gaming
Not sure how the Dreamcast can be considered the same generation as the other 3 when it was already out of print by the time most of them came out.
I owned a PS2 and Gamecube back then and yes, it was magical! The step up from the graphics of their predecessors was just unbelievable. Good times!
@Clyde_Radcliffe I think the main reason people notice this kind of thing is that in this era Microsoft went for another level in edgy, mean-spirited marketing, especially targeting Nintendo. Anyone remember the tribute to the "Not-tendo LameCube" on the official Xbox website? That was just the tip of the iceberg...
Ahh the generation of the real Console wars. And I’m talking about the battles that were fought on the school playground, the school bus and in your local park . The constant arguing, bickering, shouting at/with your mates, ‘but Xbox is so powerful and has Halo’, ‘GameCube has the finest shade of indigo and has REmake and a…carry handle???’, ‘PS2 has everything else’. Actually had to buy magazines back then to keep upto date on everything as well as playground rumours. What a time to be alive.
GameCube was my fave (:
This generation is what truly shaped out what modern video games worked out to be. No longer did we use 2D sprites in 3D games. No longer were the animations made with blocky polygonal textures. No longer were there controllers that tried to introduce a whole different layout to rival an industry standard...well, sort of.
@chipia it’s because there wasn’t a lot of M-rated games on the GameCube.
@Greatluigi Dunno, Wii and DS didn't have much M-Rated games either and they sold really well.
Also, gamecube had at least the Resident Evil games, Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear.
@chipia oh. Opps.
This is easily my least favorite generation. The 2nd generation in a row where people completely forgot about 2d games (aside from the portables), and the 3d Mario wasn't even very good in my opinion at least compared to all the others. The Wii/PS3 generation was way better, the Wii introduced all kinds of fun new ways to play and a good excuse to get off the couch, and best of all this is where the indies got a place on consoles and revived the 2d platformer with things like Cave Story, Blaster Master, Bit Trip Runner, etc. and there was also games like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and they stopped ignoring their old consoles and put the 8 and 16 bit 2d classics up on the eshop, even including Turbografx and Master System and Genesis games. As a 2d platformer fan, there wasn't anything for me to play on Xbox/PS2/Gamecube generation, and if that trend would have continued, I'd likely not be a videogame player any more at this point.
@Euler
Because it was a true 128 bit console and had similar graphical capabilities as the others. It did certainly not belong in the previous generation with PS1 and Saturn.
The Dreamcast was just way ahead of it's time.
@dres The N64 is placed with the 32 bit consoles (Saturn and PS1), despite being 64-bit and more powerful. The Wii is also placed alongside the two HD consoles.
