It's been a week of fun and frolics from Gamescom 2017, the European equivalent of E3. It wouldn't be an gaming expo without an awards ceremony, and Nintendo pretty much stole the show this year.

Super Mario Odyssey walked away with the coveted "Best of Gamescom" award and Gamescom “Most Wanted” Consumer Award, beating strong competition on other platforms.

In fact Super Mario Odyssey pretty much cleaned up in any category it was placed in, as follows:

Best Console Game Nintendo Switch

  • FIFA 18, Electronic Arts
  • Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Ubisoft
  • Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo

Best Action Game

  • Call of Duty: WWII, Activision Blizzard
  • Destiny 2, Activision Blizzard
  • Mittelerde: Schatten des Krieges, Warner Bros.
  • Star Wars Battlefront 2, Electronic Arts
  • Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo

Best Family Game

  • Anki Overdrive: Fast & Furious Edition, Anki
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, Warner Bros.
  • Life is Strange: Before the Storm, Square Enix
  • Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, Bandai Namco
  • Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo

Other great news for Nintendo at Gamescom was that Metroid: Samus Returns won the "Best Mobile Game" award. Danger Mouse: The Danger Games never stood a chance!

It wasn't just Super Mario Odyssey that impressed at Gamescom, however. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle walked away with the Best Strategy Game award against stiff competition.

Best Strategy Game

  • Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Microsoft
  • Ancestors, 1C Publishing
  • Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Ubisoft
  • Total War: Warhammer II, Koch Media
  • Tropico 6, Kalypso Media

So all in all an absolutely amazing showing from Nintendo at Gamescom this year. Now let's just hope that retail sales follow suit.
