Following the recent surprise announcement that North America is getting a Super NES Classic Edition, we have now heard from Nintendo UK that Europe will be getting The Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (what a mouthful, eh?).
Of course this will look like the European and Japanese version of the SNES with its rounded corners and colourful face buttons.
The system launches on 29th September and comes with 21 games, including the never before released Star Fox 2. It includes two SNES controllers and works with the Wii's Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro accessories.
The list of games we have now is as follows:
- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Donkey Kong Country
- EarthBound
- Final Fantasy III
- F-ZERO
- Kirby Super Star
- Kirby's Dream Course
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Mega Man X
- Secret of Mana
- Star Fox
- Star Fox 2
- Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
- Super Castlevania IV
- Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid
- Super Punch-Out!!
- Yoshi's Island
Pricing cannot be fixed in Europe, so we'll have to wait and see what the price turns out to be. At $79.99 in North America, we would expect this to be around £69.99. More news as it develops.

But only 2 of them...
I'll have to import this version.
21 Great games for £60 is amazing.
I know this site is based in UK, but more handsome?
Sorry. Looks kind of homely, like most UK people.
I kid...I kid.
BUT YOU STARTED IT, inferring our SNES is ugly.
Hm...
Approximately around IDR 1,300,000 on my place.
Quite expensive.
@LUIGITORNADO I don't think UK people are mostly homely. But in my opinion, the European/Japanese version looks much better than the colourless American version.
I've always found the US SNES ugly as heck. So happy about this.
So, where are these going to be sold?
@LUIGITORNADO It is
@LUIGITORNADO nah the US SNES really doesn't look as good. But take solace in the fact that the controllers feel slightly better in a lot of people's opinion because they have two concave buttons (UK buttons are all convex).
Thank the maker!
I spent ages refreshing various sites for as often as I could for months - trying to buy a NES classic for me and my niece - this looks absolutely great but I just really hope they have made enough to make it fairly easy to buy.
I know scalpers will buy as many as they can get their hands on after NES classic - I just hope they make enough.
Can't be arsed with a wild goose chase again. But it looks amazing!
Man I seriously hope that I can buy this asap, not going to fall behind the flood gate.
Never liked the look of the Super Famicon. Grateful for the NA version.
Can't wait for the Mini Gamecube in a couple years time
As someone who had the NA version of the Super Nintendo, sure this version is more rounded and colorful but I prefer the one I grew up with. So glad this is happening!
Still have the old snes games boxed. So these games will run quick as the ntsc versions.
Yeah that's more like it potential price tag is a bit of a hit though. Was it confirmed what the HD Mega Drive is going to cost yet?
That's so much nicer. It's a good list of games. For me, I'd definitely kick out Kirby's Dream Course in favour of something else. I'd probably turf out the Star Fox games too because they've not aged well at all and that's being polite. Nah, to hell with it Star Fox is downright fugly.
Edit: Here's the funny thing. Nintendo said back in April that they were ceasing production of the NES Classic Mini to concentrate on the Switch. Now not even 4 months after launch of the Switch when they can't even match demand for it, out they come with the SNES Classic Mini announcement. Classic indeed.
It looks great, but I already have most of the games by way of virtual console.
But I already have one like this, only bigger.
Might have to get the US version
This time I'm preordering the controller.
They should not be releasing this until they bring the mini nes back with plenty of stock! Fortunately, I was lucky enough to get the mini nes at RRP!
Nice selection of games here.
I wonder if this'll have enough space on it for the hacking community to install the entire SNES library?
Starfox AND Starfox 2???? /head explodes
Good luck fighting over the 6 they make. They are much more handsome than the 4 we have to fight for in NA though.
@Sinton praise Andraste.
Well this one's going to be a bigger nightmare for collectors.
Euro SNES Mini
US SNES Mini
Super Famicom Mini (Which okay just has different wording on the model compared to the Euro one, but if its like the Famicom Mini there's be a few differences in game line ups.)
DKC 1 instead of 2 is my only complaint. (At least until the stock problems begin, heh.)
If I can find it for a sensible price, I'm getting it for sure.
Definitely buying this. NES's library isn't that great, but all the games listed here are total classics.
My wallet is scared for the Autumn/Winter period this year. So much stuff coming and then Christmas pressies to buy as well.
I'll stick with my retropie and 4 controllers.
Eh, the European one is kind of ugly. The top of the console itself is weird-looking, and those colorful buttons clash with the machine's general color scheme.
So we won't be getting the virtual console for the Switch this year!
I like the US version better. Haha
20+1 games...I'll never understand the metric system.
What should I do? I grew up in Brazil, with that lovely US Version - loved the purple. Now I live in Europe, and am forced to watch my friends and acquaintances speaking blasphemies against that holy machine, whilst embracing the colors of the beast, that fanciful imitation of glory!
Owe to you, oh Earth and Sea!
I've never owned either, but I'm going to have to go w/ the EU version looking much better than the NA version, which at first sight I thought was a failed fake mock-up on a 3D printer.
I don't know about the functionality having never used either.
Good hunting everyone.
looks nice only 20 games is a bit rubbish though
Pre ordered! Great that we get 2 controllers this time.
@UK-Nintendo it comes with two already. Not sure whether one will be sold separately but I reckon it's doubtful
@bezerker99 I'm in the same boat. I grew up with the North American version.
Look at the asterisk!! "Pre-installed*"! Does this mean that Nintendo actually enabled a way to legally download new games?
Anyone got any good tips for getting alerts for pre orders?
@cmk8 Well anyone who wants the 2nd better hurry up because I've pre-ordered the 1st one.
This is the version I want!
I just pre-ordered on Game.
Already Preordered on Game
I pre-ordered from Game.
@ottospooky I hope it does. Will definitely reduce those club Nintendo snes controllers for wii
I love the 4 colour button controller, but I'm not sure the Euro SNES is prettier. the redesign SNES NA version is probably the sexiest
Game pre-order - Boom - cheers!
@BulkSlash Mine too, looking at those ugly graphics in this day and age.
Preordered on GAME and ShopTo.
Registered for interest on Nintendo UK.
If anything the latter will have it at the cheapest price. Bit annoyed at $80->£80 (was hoping for £70) but thats Europe for you. Probably will be €90. But hey less than £4 a game and almost all classics.
Now this is a proper line-up of classic games! I still won't buy it as I find it too expensive just to play retro games, but at least the list consists mostly of great games (although ISS Deluxe is missing, otherwise I might actually consider buying it) in contrast to the crappy line-up of the NES mini.
@RoomB31 What, there were other versions without 4 colour buttons?! Who would want such a boring controller?
No seriously, I wish Nintendo would've maintained that 4 colour button scheme on all of their consoles.
I remember when playing with others and trying to teach them the controls, you could always just say something like "press the yellow button". So in that regard it was really practical.
Nowadays, when you tell them something like "press Y", they either don't have the time to find the button in the heat of the moment or you just have to pause the game to show them the button.
And - though this might be the nostalgia talking - I find the 4 colour design prettier than a boring all-grey controller.
Game uk has it at 79.99 pounds. And the mericas has it for 79.99 dollars.
@Jake-06 "colourless"? I don't get it. The UK/Japan version is just grey and lighter grey. The US version has purple thingies on it. Wouldn't that make the American one more colorful? Are you talking about the controllers specifically?
@shani lol. Press the yellow button. I remember like yesteryear
It is a shame this will probably not boot up cartridges. I own almost all of them on VC, and played everything I could out of them. Starfox 2 is tempting, but I honestly have to think more about it, at least with the information available so far.
@Enigk pre ordered on game as well so long since ie bought anything had to change everything on the bloody thing
This lineup, while smaller, is more appealing, because, whilst the NCM:NES had 30 titles, a lot of them were bad, particularly for their difficulty. I believe the price is also higher because of the fact you get 2 controllers and that you are paying for essentially an all-new game (Star Fox 2).
@UmbreonsPapa Yeah, I don't get the shock and outrage over the NA SNES Classic being release here in NA. Were they expecting the other region's version??? SMH LOL
@UK-Nintendo I know, right? Just writing that comment brought back memories for me too.
That's a fine game collection, finally Starfox,
From the box picture, it does not look like the controllers fit Wii Remotes, I already have a SNES Classic controller, was expecting the same.
Glad I'll be getting a Limey version, I do not like the Ceptic version
Oh wow. That line up. Homerun Nintendo. Well done.
It says the games are the US versions which is good in general because they run in the intended 60 Hz instead of 50. But that likely means we might not get the non English versions of some of the games (I remember playing Yoshi's Island, Secret of Mana and Super Metroid in German).
@Hikingguy I am aware about the difference in philosophy from then versus now. It doesn't change the fact that games such as Ninja Gaiden aren't as appealing as they once were due to their purposely difficult design attempting to (back then) make the game longer. It was never fair to be knocked off a platform and be forced to start a level over due to an obstacle you couldn't see back then, and it still isn't now. I can understand this, but to the average consumer, they may not, and may just give up.
This is why I feel the Mini SNES is more appealing; there are more multiplayer titles, and the emphasis isn't so much on arcade-style experiences but longer, more thoughtful, well designed games instead, which, I understand, is generally due to the types of games released on the platform.
@LUIGITORNADO it is and always was ugly
The Japanese and European version is so pretty... The American one is really ugly. They should have keep the same design worldwide.
For years, people have scoured the Arctic tundra in hope of spotting the elusive Sasquatch - and plumbed the depths of Loch Ness in search of its famous monster...soon, we'll be able to add another mythical creature to this exclusive list: the SNES Classic Mini!
Argh!! £70 for Star Fox 1+2 and the non-GBA version of Yoshis Island!! But still so awesome!!!
Would this work on a North American tv? I'm assuming no due to the plugs but thought I'd ask.
Damn you Nintendo, I wasn't supposed to be interested in this...
Would've loved to have 30 games, (donkey Kong country 2, localized dragon warrior games), but this list is great.
Gotta say though, USA got the better shaped console though. Sorry but it's true
Just pre-ordered mine on Games website although I think £79.99 is a little expensive as the Nes mini was only £49.99 yes you get an extra controller but the Nes Mini had 9 more games. I also hope they don't make the same stupidly short controllers again.
What's annoying is that I know I'm [probably] gonna get one of these, even though I really wish we'd got at least 30 titles again (and ideally a few more), particularly considering the price just jumped to nearly twice that of the NES Classic Mini.
And, the thing that makes me most mad is that Nintendo knows it has people like me in its back pocket.
>
Any official word on whether there will be a Super Famicom edition with an alternate lineup?
@SuperToe Almost certainly.
Still looks much better than the ugly US Snes.
Nice.
Other than the purple buttons , I've always liked the style and design of the US version the best.
@FX102A smyths toys have them up for pre-order at £69.99 if you've got one local
no AC, no buy
I've always preferred the US SNES because it looks more like a toy to me. I did wish the US had the colorful controller buttons instead of the plain purple ones.
HOLY PANDEMONIUM, ITS ALREADY SOLD OUT!!! so glad i managed to get one.
@SuperToe Must be one
I can't believe this is actually happening!!
Hopefully Nintendo supply these bad boys in bulk. If I can get my hands on one, I'll be happy. Otherwise I already own the majority of these games in their original & Virtual Console forms.
Also - the PAL SNES & controller look the best!
It's like 1992 all over again. I remember the same reaction then when we found out we weren't getting the American version-phew.
Of course, it turned out the USA version played the actual games better. And earlier usually. But still, the Pal version looked nicer.
Well I should have known better but this thing is already impossible to buy . I have the nes mini but do I really need this ? I will buy it of course if I can get it at normal price but I'm not paying silly money
Tried game but it just keeps crashing
@LUIGITORNADO I mean, they're both ugly because of how outdated the packaging was made to look.
Very solid list of games! Even with some games oldtimers got cheated out of back then. The absence of things like Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, ActRaiser, or Killer Instinct might be a little disappointing, but all understandable, and this is still a killer line-up.
Wonder if these will be PAL only as far as power/voltage and plugs? I would love to buy one as I always liked the look of your SNES and Japan's Super Famicom better than our squared-off gray box with big purple buttons. I'm still going to buy the North American one day 1, but I'd love to get a hold of this one too.
the US version is an eyesore...but it did run the games better back in the days. I am glad they keep it that way for the nostalgia factor but I always found the JP/Pal version way more stylish.
The bias be strong on the UK based Nintendo site.
Ah well, I like the look of the UK one, but I can't disparage what I grew up with. US design all the way.
The comments here are a pretty perfect illustration of why Nintendo went with the designs they did in the UK and US. Different regions, different tastes.
I grew up with lots of US products around me and I own the NA model so I'm partial to that design.
EU version looks like ass. It always has!
I love the Purple USA version!
I'm surprise they didn't replace Final Fantasy VI with Terranigma since FFVI was never released in PAL territory. Also shouldn't Star Fox be called Starwing? That means Star Fox 2 should now be called Starwing 2: The Lylat Wars (a combination title of the first Star Fox and Star Fox 64).
@daniruy
...for the devil sends it's beast with wrath for he knows the time is short...
...so pre-order yours now or only a pact with Bealzibub will net you one!
If I can snag a NA one, I can always glue some skittles on it.
Most retailers around here will likely sell it for around 99.99 (Euros), at the very least. Especially considering how the NES Mini did last year - people will pay for it, that's very clear.
That means Star Fox 2 should now be called Starwing 2: The Lylat Wars (a combination title of the first Star Fox and Star Fox 64).
No, because that means changing the title screen which they won't do.
"Pricing cannot be fixed in Europe"
That is sooo awful. And the person who came up with this should be ashamed of his or herself! Because it means the device will be VERY overpriced. For example: A 300 Dollar Switch should have costed 300 Euro over here (or even less). However, it costs 330 Euro?! What the heck!!
@LUIGITORNADO make no mistake .. it is so ugly!
@subpopz Mate .. the US version looks like a space T.O.Y - toy
@BAN Im mostly talking about the controllers however even the console is a bit more colourful. It has the logo in the top right and has a few more shades of grey whilst the American version is just purple with grey. Overall, I personally think the EU/Jp is better as it has a better design and look.
@Jake-06 But the logo up top is just that- a tiny little logo. You can't actually think that counts, right?
@BAN If I needed to put up a blank piece of paper or a slightly coloured piece of paper on my wall, I would choose the coloured one
@LUIGITORNADO if your snes I the one with 2 big purple bits then I agree it's ugly as ffff
@UK-Nintendo it comes with 2
